Elden Ring Gameplay

The Elden Ring Wiki covers Elden Ring, developed by FromSoftware and BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment Inc, is a fantasy action-RPG adventure set within a world created by Hidetaka Miyazaki -creator of the influential DARK SOULS video game series, and George R R Martin - author of The New York Times best-selling fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire. Danger and discovery lurk around every corner in FromSoftware's largest game to-date.

Hidetaka Miyazaki, President and Game Director of FromSoftware Inc known for directing critically-acclaimed games in beloved franchises including Armored Core, Dark Souls, Bloodborne and Sekiro Shadows Die Twice.

George R R Martin is the On  the New York Times bestselling author of many novels, including the acclaimed series A Song of Ice and One - A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords, A Feast For Crows, and A Dance with Dragons. As a writer-producer, he has worked on The Twilight Zone, Beauty and the Beast, and various feature films and pilots that were never made.

Elden Ring Reveal

  • Elden Ring has been in production since the end of the Dark Souls III DLC.
This is in contrast to Sekiro, that begun production in 2015 after Bloodborne.
  • Elden Ring will release on PC, Xbox One and Playstation 4
  • Bandai Namco is publishing and has registered the Elden Ring IP
  • Elden Ring Release Date – From our observations
The release window for this game is unlikely to match FromSoftware’s traditional March-April, and is more likely to fall into Dark Souls’ September-October release.
  • “Elden Ring is a third-person action RPG with a fantasy setting… gameplay is not so far from Dark Souls… Elden Ring belongs to the same genre.”
  • Plethora of weapons, magic and builds, and a focus on RPG elements. FromSoftware expects equipment variety to be larger than Souls in this regard.
  • No main fixed protagonist, players create the characteristics and personality of their character. This leads us to believe Character Creation is a given.
  • The World of Elden Ring is vast and interconnected. No longer a continuity of “levels”, players see vast landscapes in between the “dungeon-esque” areas.
  • The larger world scale allows for freedom, promotes exploration, and introduces new and exciting mechanics, such as Horse Riding and Mounted Combat.
  • Elden Ring is a “natural evolution of Dark Souls.” New mechanics needed by this larger world. Expect FromSoftware’s trademark challenging boss battles.
  • Towns won’t be full of villagers, merchants and the like. They will be ruins, dungeons and exploration hubs. As Souls there is no vast population of NPCs.
  • The NPCs the player finds are expected to be the most compelling yet in the studio’s work, thanks to Martin’s involvement in the Mythos.
George R. R. Martin has written the world’s mythos and Hidetaka Miyazaki has written the game story.
  • Story will be revealed through “fragments of environmental storytelling” as in previous Souls games.
  • Mythos and the present moment of the player are connected and exploration will lead players to understand why things are as they are.
  • There is no information at time of writing about multiplayer/online/invasions.

Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree

Shadow of the Erdtree DLC Trailer Breakdown

Shadow of the Erdtree DLC Trailer!

What to Expect in Shadow of the Erdtree?

The Land of Shadow. A place obscured by the Erdtree.
Where the goddess Marika first set foot.

A land purged in an unsung battle.
Set ablaze by Messmer’s flame.

It was to this land that Miquella departed.
Divesting himself of his flesh, his strength, his lineage.
Of all things Golden.

And now Miquella awaits the return of his promised Lord.

New Story

Guided by Empyrean Miquella, players are beckoned to the Land of Shadow, a place obscured by the Erdtree where the goddess Marika first set foot. In these strange new lands, players discover the dark secrets of the world as they meet others who follow in Miquella’s footsteps with ulterior motives.

New Location

Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree takes players beyond the Lands Between to explore the Land of Shadow, a completely new world from Elden Ring. Players can seamlessly travel back and forth between its vast maps interspersed with diverse situations and meticulous dungeons where menacing enemies roam.

New Content

Shadow of the Erdtree adds new Weapons, equipment, weapon skills and Magic not found in the base game ELDEN RING, along with new Enemies, Boss encounters and plotlines to further increase players' RPG freedom. Take on these threats with the new powers you can acquire.

Shadow of the Erdtree Speculations

The Erdtree featured in the cover art is bleeding Gold, which may also mean that this is a post-destruction story that happens after the Endings of the game. Zooming into the image seems to show ashes coming down from the tree branches, so it may both be a post-burning scenario, or a pre-breaking scenario when the Golden Order was first corrupted. The bleeding Erdtree seems to be strangled by another twisted tree - some speculated that this twisted tree is an extension of Godwyn's roots. The sky above the two trees is sunless - has an eclipse befallen the Lands Between?

We can also see ethereal structures on the field - could these be the ghostly tombs of the Haligtree soldiers who sacrificed themselves in a flash to guide Miquella's return?

According to Hidetaka Miyazaki in interview with several media outlets, the new DLC will be have the following content:

Elden Ring Story Overview

Elden Ring The Lands Between

The Lands Between is the world of Elden Ring, and those who live in The Lands Between were blessed by the Elden Ring and the "Erdtree". Those who were blessed by the Elden Ring are characterized by having a golden aura that can be seen in their eyes. However, at some point, some of those who were blessed lost their grace, were exiled, and labeled as the Tarnished.  As time passed, for unknown reasons, the Elden Ring was shattered across the lands and its pieces were picked up by many of the 6 demigods, where they inherited different powers and have physically changed and twisted due to being corrupted by the power.

lore image1 elden ring wik guide 300px

The Lands Between is broken into 6 distinct areas that are overseen by a demigod and feature a central hub that connects all these 6 areas. According to an interview with Miyazaki, players will have total freedom as to the order they want to tackle each area, and it is up to the player how they want to approach it. Apart from that the hub will not be accessible at the beginning of the game, which means you will need to progress the game until you reach the hub area.

According to Hidetaka Miyazaki: "The Lands Between is supposed to invoke this feeling of something that's very mysterious and very ethereal – and we hope that when players play the game, they're going to experience that."

The Tarnished in Elden Ring

In the official reveal trailer that was presented in E3 2021, you'll see a softly spoken, hooded woman saying "The Tarnished, will soon return." The question is, who and what is The Tarnished? Simple, The Tarnished is you, the player, you are one of the Tarnished that have been exiled upon losing their blessing that was given by the Elden Ring and the "Erdtree", a tree that hosts the source and life of The Lands Between. Very much like in previous Souls games, you are the chosen undead or the ashen one. You are then called back to The Lands Between, as well as the other Tarnished after the destruction of the Elden Ring to recover the shards of the Elden Ring, to make them whole once again, and to become the lord of The Lands Between.

lore image2 elden ring wik guide 300px

According to Hidetaka Miyazaki in an interview: " I feel like one of the main themes of the game is how the player, the Tarnished, approaches or treats this new-found grace and this return to the land that they were once banished from, how they interpret this and the meaning. It's not just the player-character, of course, it's lots of characters in the game, who are all beckoned back and will have their own adventures and motives. We want the player to discover for themselves what that means and how they want to begin their adventure."

Combat in Elden Ring

What is Stealth in Elden Ring?

Stealth mechanics seem that will be present and may be useful in combination with backstab attacks, also the game may feature a night and day mechanic that may affect the stealth mechanic as well. Stealth as many are aware of, will allow the player to crouch, sneak, and hide behind tall grass to be less detected by the enemy. Stealth will play an integral mechanic in combat since you can use it to your advantage to sneak behind an enemy to instantly kill them or at least deal a large amount of damage from using a stealth attack.

Freedom in Character Build

In the trailer that was revealed in E3 2021, we see a lot of unique Skills, magical abilities, and even having a horse leaping up a cliffside, as well as attacking while riding your Mount. These are Skills that you pick up through the player's progression and exploration. There are some cases in that a player can acquire a skill by purchasing it from merchants or learning them from an NPC, but during an interview with Hidetaka Miyazaki that was featured, he stresses that in general, skills are hidden throughout the game's world, and it is the player's responsibility to discover these through exploration.

elden ring artwork elden ring wiki guide 4 300px

Elden Ring will have complete freedom when it comes to building up your character, you are basically free to combine your Skills with different weapons and equipment, and you'll learn magic as well. Skills are freely interchangeable between a large variety of weapons as per Hidetaka Miyazaki, and that there are around 100 Skills. With having fewer restrictions, players will have even more variations of Builds that are even richer than previous Souls games.

Elden Ring's Day & Night Cycle

Real-time changes are featured in Elden Ring in the form of the Day and Night cycle, as well as Dynamic Weather. These features also heavily affect gameplay, combat, and the world you are exploring. For example, in cases where you are roaming at night, both players and enemies will change in terms of aggression due to a decrease in visibility, and some unique enemies that only appear at night will come out.

elden ring artwork elden ring wiki guide 15 300px

Are there Covenants in Elden Ring?

Traditional Souls Covenants or Factions are not featured in Elden RingElden Ring Covenants are instead player-chosen allegiances or pledges undertaken to specific deities or groups of NPCs. Based on previous titles, players can expect their covenant to affect their gameplay by changing their Online interactions, or by creating new situations where users can collect special items or defeat certain enemies to rank up and obtain special rewards. Rewards are usually MagicWeapons, and Armor pieces.

New Mechanics in Elden Ring

Elden Ring will have a large scale in terms of the world and exploration, and to go hand-in-hand with this, some new mechanics are introduced such as jumping, yes players can jump now, as well as riding on horseback (Mounts). Hidetaka Miyazaki strongly suggests that you thoroughly search and explore every section of the world to find Skills that are hidden.

elden ring artwork elden ring wiki guide 5 300px

There are a number of choices as well that players can approach their way of combat, some may be brave and choose to go on head-to-head, while others would rather have allies such as being able to summon the spirits of deceased enemies. Our Combat page dives into the different aspects and mechanics of the new and familiar combat tactics for Elden Ring.

Summoning the Dead in Elden Ring

One of the combat aspects of Elden Ring is being able to summon Spirits that can help you in battle. These spirits are usually the fallen souls of the enemies that you defeat, and summoning them will have them assist you in combat. These are your offline summons, and it is quite different to have your friends or other players summoned to your session which is available in Online co-op play. What's interesting with multiplayer is that you can even set a password on your calling marks, so that this way you can just have your friends join your session, if you're more comfortable with that rather than having a random drop-in.

summon combat info elden ring wiki guide 300px

According to Miyazaki, "|These spirit summons, we feel like – as well as there being a large variety to them – they're a nice collectible hidden element within the game world to discover and to equip as you go. They offer a lot of different strategic options, but also the player might find that they just like a certain enemy tagging along with them, a certain summon pleases them aesthetically. So there's a lot of strategic and a lot of personal touch to these summons. And we hope that players will also enjoy discovering their own progression elements as well."

Elden Ring Game Difficulty

There will only be ONE difficulty in Elden Ring. The decision of FromSoftware to lean towards this feature can benefit both new and veteran players of this genre. Elden Ring features a large scale when it comes to its world and exploration, so it does make sense that it really is up to you on how you want to tackle the game, it is highly encouraged that players carefully assess the situation that lies ahead and to find different ways to deal with it. This also provides a good camaraderie within the community since everyone can share their experiences and hopefully help one another.

The game makes you feel stupid for not deleting everything with 20k damage instantly + not wanting to use mimic tear cause you are in search for a challenge. While most of the time riding around picking up Rowa you will never use anyway. If we are honest the fandom of ER consists now mostly of people who "finally" can play a souls game like their favourite game, Breath of the Wild. Farming stuff nonstop without worrying about shat.

What is this PKCS everyone is talking about? Is it somehow related to the iconic game Pessimistic Spirits the third?

        • Anonymous

How about we all acknowledge FromSoft’s games all have their respective strengths and weaknesses, and just enjoy playing them instead of mindlessly arguing about them?

          • Anonymous

            Unpopular opinions:

            * Dodge rolls should have less i-frames and a cooldown after being used based on your equip load. Would promote more strategic playstyles beyond just mindlessly mashing one button and looking like a flopping fish on land. Light equip loads would trade out rolls for quick dashes like in Bloodborne and Sekiro and naturally have the best i-frames

            * Parrying should be overhauled such that they inflict "parry damage" and when your "parry health" is reduced to zero only then you'd be vulnerable to a critical. You'd have the chance to survive at least one parry depending on what parry tool is being used and what type of weapon/attack is being parried, similar to how poise scales off of what armor you're wearing and what weapon type you're being attacked with to determine if/when you stagger. Would add a far more broad dynamic to it and make getting criticals require planning beyond just pressing L1 once, and grant opportunity to be resistant to them based on weapon choice as well as avoiding obviously absurd situations like a dagger parrying a giant crusher

            * FP should have a slow default regen, even if it were only one FP every few seconds. No strong argument for it but conceptually it would just make more sense at least in my mind

            * Blocking with shields should consume less stamina than they do as dodge rolling is typically far cheaper and you're guaranteed to avoid all damage (rolling has always been OP). Weapon blocking can remain as is

            * All charged R2's should either have an attack feint or a dodge cancel as their success rate is so low 9/10 you'll whiff or take damage/get staggered out of them

            * Guard counters need to be WAY faster, like the literal split second after an attack lands they should come out. They're completely unviable outside PvE and even then they're still slow as hell

            * Backsteps deserve better i-frames and better range to their follow-up attacks. They are rendered completely obsolete out of the gate by dodge rolls and need a buff badly

            * Fast travel should only be possible by resting at a Site of Grace and cost runes depending on how far you're traveling, the fact that you can do it as much as you want whenever you want takes a lot away from exploration and just enjoying the adventure and would help make the experience feel more meaningful

            * We should have the ability to re-fight significant bosses at their Site of Grace if we want instead of having to wait until NG+ or open another save. Sekiro nailed this with its "Reflection of Strength" system

Best and worse mechanic introduction in every souls game
Demon souls: best was character tendency, worse was loosing HP for dying
Dark souls: best was tail cutting, worse was curse statues effect.
Dark souls 2: best was bonfire ascetic, worse was adaptability.
Dark souls 3: best idk, worse idk, dark souls 3 just refined the series combat but didn’t do anything new.
Bloodborne: best was trick weapons, worse was lamppost, like grinding was atrocious in that game.
Elden ring: best is a jump button, worse was probably item crafting, since like I think I only ever used that when I was doing a bow build.

Would you guys compare this game to ds2? I probably would in the sense of how divisive it is between people, and how despite its flaws it is still a very compelling game

I had a comment I made last year that had several hundred likes. I check it every now and then and this week it only has four likes. Did Fextra purge likes on comments for some reason or am I actually going insane?

In the dlc they should put in a random character from dark souls and make them have no idea how they arrived in the lands between. Just imagine walking along a path and just finding Orenstein or ariandel slumped against a rock in a daze and you then are able to talk to and fight alongside them.

guys i need any suggestion im looking for the best build i want to finish the story of elden ring but it was so hard ive played it on day one can u suggest me any builds that will make me the game easier

"Dark Souls 2 probably bears the Souls series’ closest resemblance to Elden Ring. Design wise, both Dark Souls 2 and Elden Ring stressed open-ended gameplay and ditched linear progression."

Miyazaki agrees and in fact goes a step further.

“In regards to Dark Souls 2, I actually personally think this was a really great project for us, and I think without it, we wouldn’t have had a lot of the connections and a lot of the ideas that went forward and carried the rest of the series.” - Hidetaki Miyazaki during his Ign interview

Hey yall, I just got elden ring a few days ago, and I am currently a level 25 Vagabond exploring stormveil castle. I love literally everything about this game from the combat to the character design. Having this be my first souls game, I have to tell you i was NOT READY. I was more used to playing Zelda and Assassin's Creed, and this basically just slapped me in the face and told me to deal with it. Nevertheless, I shall not rest until my foolish ambitions become reality.

                          • MASSIVE EMPYREAN MESMER THEORY:
In the trailer, Mesmer says "why would you lordship sanction someone so bereft of light" (referncing the Tarnished). Rather than the son of Rykard or Mohg, maybe he is Marika's son with Radagon (hence the red hair) and Miquella/Malenia's brother since Marika is the only one with authority to grant us lordship. Also, this is aided by the Smouldering Butterfly theory which probably refers to Mesmer and not Melina (debunking that theory). He probably isn't Rykard's son because Lady Tanith doesn't have such authority to sanction Lordship. Plus, Mesmer's Flame starts out pure black and turns red (completely distinct from the Blasphemous Flame and any other flame we've seen).

Just saw an old elden ring vid of the collector’s edition by bandai namco. That ost caught me off guard and I’m surprised it wasn’t in the game, or maybe it’s meant for dlc

I couldn't have foreseen this in my worst nightmares, but Reuters reports that Tencent is developing a mobile version of Elden Ring which is inspired by Genshin Impact and will include predatory monetization schemes.

In light of this, I wonder if the undisclosed apps on SteamDB were actually new (paid) cosmetic items or even microtransactions all along, rather than Shadow of the Erdtree.

I've been playing FromSoft games since 2012, starting with Demon's Souls. But I'm so used to abuse by publishers at this point that I'm inclined to believe it really was too good to be true to have just one big developer that treats its customers with even the slightest bit of respect. I should've known when Google started showing me sites of third-party sellers of in-game items - that were actually having success. This game is a veritable gold mine for greedy corporations, full of untapped potential to get into the pockets of Cheeto dust-fingered gamers that can't be bothered to pay for the product they want to play, or even play the product they paid for. I know I'm yelling into the void, but I hate everything about this industry, both its producers and their schemes, and the costumers that support them.

Black Dragon Kalameet is a Boss in Dark Souls Remastered. He is one of the strongest dragons still alive, and is encountered by the player several times before he can finally be defeated.

                                  Black Dragon Kalameet Information
"Even mighty Anor Londo dared not provoke his ire." - Hawkeye Gough
Kalameet appears for the first time while the player is traveling through the Royal Wood; he lands in a bridge and watches the player for a couple of seconds before flying away, similar to what the Red Wyvern does in Undead Burg. Kalameet can actually be targeted and hit while briefly perched on the bridge (such as by ranged weapons) but cannot be injured.

He is later encountered at the end of a valley going down from the Royal Forest. Going through the opposite way to where you fight Artorias the Abysswalker, you will find a very small stairway/path going down to the left of an elevator, with a body lying at the top of the trail. Follow the trail down as it curves around to the left and it will take you to the valley of the Royal Forest (the area underneath the small bridge with NPC Marvelous Chester standing at one end). There will be 2 dogs and a treasure to your left at the end of the valley, and turning to your right you will find 3 dogs and a very long ladder going down next to a waterfall, which leads to the place where you find Kalameet for the second time. If you are feeling adventurous, you can also descend the waterfall by falling down a series of rocks protruding from the water. (There is a Crystal Lizard on one of these rocks, the second from the top.)

If you go to the giant valley where you find Kalameet before talking to Hawkeye Gough about him, he will approach you flying from the other side of the valley and fire his fire-breath to you. The fire-breath kills you instantly most of the time, though it's possible to survive one. It's nearly impossible to fight him at this time. You first need to ask Hawkeye Gough's help to shoot Kalameet down so you can engage him in melee. If you venture deeper in the valley you find a message saying: "If only Hawkeye Gough were here..."

You will need to see Kalameet fly by near the top of the waterfall before his arena before Hawkeye Gough will offer to shoot down Kalameet. After you find Hawkeye Gough by unlocking his room using the Crest Key, you have to talk to him all the times you can until you exhaust his dialogues, then close the conversation. If you have not yet seen Kalameet fly by near the waterfall, you will not be able to ask for Gough's help. Once you have found Kalameet the second time, go back to Gough and talk to him again; he will now ask you if you need help with the dragon. Say 'Yes.' He will ask if you intend to prevail until the end, say 'Yes.' Then a short cinematic will play showing Hawkeye Gough using his bow to take down Kalameet from the skies.

Now you have to go to the valley again and you will find Kalameet on the ground, though he will still use some low-altitude flying attacks. You can fight and kill him now. Keep in mind that a fog door will appear before his area now. The valley area, including Artorias's arena area, will also re-open for PvP once Kalameet has been shot down by Gough, as Kalameet is now considered a boss for the area. So a player in human form will now able to summon others to assist in fighting Kalameet, or be invaded by other players until Kalameet is killed.

Kalameet's black flame attacks deal both physical and magic damage, and it does not appear possible to completely eliminate the damage even with a good shield (although some buffs such as Great Magic Shield and Great Magic Barrier can nearly do so). But the damage can be minimized by the use of high magic resistance equipment and/or a high magic resistance shield, such as the Crest Shield. High stability greatshields can also be quite effective even if their magic damage reduction is not as high as the Crest Shield.

I don’t want to get my hopes up especially due to the fact that the game has been out for two years, buuut with all the time fromsoft took and the hype from these days, maybe they’ll implement aows to weapons like gargoyles and dragon creatclaw.

                                        • Millicent didn't actually drop a somber ancient dragon smithing stone after assisting her in her fight. From what I understand from other sources, you don't actually get that reward until you defeat Melania and insert the needle into the flower. Can someone else confirm?

Many people complain about the lacks this game has, and it’s true. Elden ring wasted a lot of potential regarding areas, weapons, catalysts, spells, enemies and pvp. But I think that’s redeemed by two things: this game is big and as such it’s not easy to compose interactive gameplay, design and lore and merge those things perfectly, even with all the time there was. And second, fromsoft had a very strong investment on the project, and the success it had wasn’t expected at all. Fromsoft had to cut expenses on these details and choose what would prevail in order to balance profits with quality, and I think they chose well on that regard. All the patches that have been done demonstrate their interest on keeping activity and some degree of focus to the game. That’s why I’m glad they are taking their time with the DLC. It’s a sign that the developers have a lot of confidence on the project’s impact on their fanbase and even more people around.
