you can farm bloodroses, you can farm rimmed crystal buds, you can farm smoldering butterflies but not this... Why? why introducing rot at all when you don't lets us use it like other greases.. I don't believe it would be hard to fix this but to be respawnable.. no wonder people cheat it with engines and sell it on aeaoh or whatever that shady site is called.. it's not a big issue and I don't really need rot grease but it's about the princip.. wzy can you farm other greses but not this one.. it's just ticking dmg not anything that would break the game.. maybe lower the build up and let us farm it dammit!

As usual, save-scumming to duplicate items is by far your best be there. With a brand new character you can speedrun your way to about 25 of these in less than 30min. Now back-up your save on a cloud and trade them to another character. Reload your previous save. Trade them again. Do this about four times for 100 butterflies. Have your buddy trade them back. Now do the trade back and forth a few more times. Now you have 999 of them in, all told, about an hour of work.
Thanks From.

Honestly if you wanna use rot that badly just use one of the 3 incants that inflict it instead of wasting your time with these for consumables, its alot easier to invest into faith or just respec into it than it is to grind pests for butterflies

Today on “Things that are so rare I end up never using them”…
- Anonymous
Normal players: screwed over lol
The people that actually make rot an issue: duped full stacks and full storage
From why even bother making these limited/grinded out
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
i really don’t like how they make these and black key bolts finite items. you can only get like one full stack of each per ng cycle. i’m not trying to overblow it and say it’s game ruining, it just makes no sense that they would limit the potential for fun that the player can have with a specific type of build.
- Anonymous
It's not practical to farm these to make arrows since they are so rare in game.
Also only waste them if you absolutely must to cure Scarlet Rot.
Instead put a few points into magic so you can cast Flame Cleanse Me.
Even melee classes can put some points into magic after they meet their usual build.
Flame Cleanse Me requires 12 Faith, and uses 14 FP per cast.
For Lake of Rot you should be able to cast it about 8 times. So try to have at least 112 FP.
- Anonymous
Don’t bother farming, ask someone on Reddit for a stack instead. Always back up your save first.
- Anonymous
Can someone help me confirm that the little kindred of rot fellas you find in places like the meteoric blade cellar and the Haligtree have higher drop rates than the lesser kindreds? I found an aeonian butterfly on one in co-op from the Haligtree, and I'd like to confirm a source I found that states the drop rates are closer to 8% in testing rather than 1.5% like the big ones. It would make farming these far easier than having to skim basilisks from the lake of loathing.

This farming message has been brought to you by “Flame, Cleanse Me.”
- Anonymous
Today I learned that those basilisks can drop more butterflies, and I am using that to my advantage from now on. Rot pots and grease are so unbelievably useful, and now that I know an actually decent place to farm the butterflies I'm using them so much more.
- Anonymous
Make things like this available in the store, but make the price ridiculously-high if you want, like 10k+. Even at 25k, it would be making the item available and putting a decent 'throttle' (price) on it.
- Anonymous
Personally I find the farming run to be rather therapeutic. It's like a nice dip in a lava lamp sauna :)
- Anonymous
If you choose to limit yourself to bow and arrow, stop whining about the limits of bow and arrow.
- Anonymous
So i need to BATHE in a WHOLE LAKE ROT to kill basilisk with a 8% drop chance on butterflies that I can make rot arrows out of?! instead of DIPPING THE ARROWS IN THE LAKE?!?! This is why people save scam from. Wtf are you doing?
Invaders on suicide watch after learning they can only have a set amount of rot-pots per playthrough
- Anonymous
The crafting system is honestly fine. Or at least, it WOULD be if the drop rates weren't so horrid. Would it have killed them to make Aeonian Butterfiles purchasable from Enia after killing Malenia? I.e. one of the hardest to kill bosses in the lategame anyway? I get that Scarlet Rot is potent and all, but what other option do we really get for Bows? I COULD no-hit bosses and "git gud", like I have numerous times in the past, or I can sell my soul to the 4 Basilisks that drop the damn things.
- Anonymous
Someone please make a merchant mod for PC so all arrow types are purchasable from a single vendor. I don't give a crap about PVP but please for the love of God take some of the pain away from bow only runs.
- Anonymous
Farm in Caelid, slightly NW of Heart of Aeonia Site of Grace, there are 3 - 4 each time. WP, then repeat and you'll get about 100 in 10-15 min.
- Anonymous
Crafting has always been a tacked on mechanic without much thought. It's just a lot more evident in cases like this, where you can only continue to craft something by putting basilisks on the endangered species list.
- Anonymous
I guess archers were having it too easy with their 200 damage in a best case scenario...
- Anonymous
not sure if they were just one time drops, but i have gotten these as drops from the respawning baby rot kindreds in the haligtree
- Anonymous
"Rot weapons shouldn't be in infinite supply" makes sense until you get rot breath or rotten stray ashes and proceed to trivialize bosses anyway. These really didn't need to be finite
- Anonymous
Real talk, I need these, I can’t farm these. Do I sleep on rot pots for my pots only jar head co-op build? No. I go to Reddit, ask nicely and someone drops me 999 Aeonian Butterflies. So Fromsoft, what was the point of making these not respawn in the world?
- Anonymous
FS when people are Spamming Rivers of blood skill 888 times in a row: i sleep
FS when there is a reliable "crafting" source for bow only users: REAL ****!
- Anonymous
So aeonian butterflies don't respawn probably so you can't have a reliable source of scarlet rot EXCEPT rotten breath can be acquired from bleeding mama dragon to death and cashing in the heart at the cathedral of dragon communion (both of which are also in Caelid) and you only need to level a wretch 7 times to cast it so I don't know why I have to farm death frogs to make my archer build reliable.
- Anonymous
Honestly I just wish they hadn't bothered at all with crafting. They did such an incredible job at turning the Souls formula into an open world game, but crafting is one of the very few areas that I don't think works. That's more because I just hate crafting systems in games period unless something unique is done with it. But this is just a standard as it gets crafting system. It's not that big of a deal for me since I rarely craft anyways. But when I do, it can be a pain in the ass, and for players who do regularly craft, it must be terrible.
- Anonymous
and of course they dont respawn lmao i wish i could hack the **** out of this game on ps5, these devs are annoying
- Anonymous
crafting in this game is so stupid, just give merchants crafting materials to buy depending where they are located in the game
I did some testing for drop rates for 2 different enemies, pests and basilisks. I wanted to know if the "stronger" versions mattered at all so I killed pests in 2 different locations. All kills were done with 274 item discovery, 99 arcane and the talisman on a magic casting build with 15 vigor, lvl 160, all were easily done.
Church of the plague: 500 kills, 23 butterflies, 4.6% drop rate
Cloister: 539 kills, 27 butterflies, 5.01% drop rate
Both are comparable, both not great, ok rune farm in cloister but better exist. Next are the basilisks in the Lake of Rot.
504 kills, 106 butterflies, 21.03% drop rate
So much better. Run from the cloister grace back through the lake of rot, hug the right side there are 4, then go towards the ruin and there are 8 more. Roll around in the rot then go back on land and let it tick over and you'll get a less damaging rot making it better to do the run. This is by no means definitive I just hope it helps, duplicating a save for crafting materials seems like the path of least resistance at every turn sadly.
- Anonymous
The little bug enemies actually drop them (not the big ones), from the haligtree roots site of grace, take the elevator behind you up into the temple, there a few there and to the left outside there are more
The ones in caelid dont drop them
- Anonymous
Imagine removing the respawn of these because people "abuse" rot in pvp.... But they still have Rot Breath in the game.
It's almost as if FromSoft wants everyone to respecc to use dragon incantation when fighting a boss that's weak to rot instead of just letting non-Dragon Breath users have access to rot crafting materials.
- Anonymous
None of the Aeonian Butterflies respawn, the only way to farm them is killing enemies, but they very rarely drop even with item discovery buffs.
- Anonymous
"They can be farmed indefinitely in the Abandoned Cave in Dragonbarrow."
This is just, completely false.
Aeolian Butterflies don't respawn from any gatherable source.
- Anonymous
They CANNOT be farmed from the Abandoned Cave - once picked up the butterflies never respawn.
- Anonymous
After grabbing all the initial spawns in Abandoned Cave, these do NOT respawn. I have tried 4 times.
- Anonymous
These are no longer respawning in Abandoned Cave as of patch 1.03.2 Which is ridiculously unfair. Why bother putting in a robust crafting system if every player is shitscared of ever using any items because of scarcity ?
- Anonymous
They don’t respawn in the Abandoned Cave. Can’t farm them if they don’t respawn.
- Anonymous
"They can be farmed from the two pest just outside the church of the plague site of grace in caelid. "
I tried like 40 runs and got 0 butterflies but 5 cleavers, i kinda doubt the drop them at all

they respawn infinitely next to malenia, in the room with the scarlet bloom. if sittinf at the grace doesnt reset them, dying or otherwise passing time will.
not very useful until very late game, but grbbing 999 before ng+ is real nice.
- Anonymous
Found the easiest way to farm these, go to the church of the plague and leave through the front door, turn left and go down the road for a bit. You'll run into a group of enemies and there's 6-ish butterflies that respawn there.
- Anonymous
Insect-like enemies are officially named Kindred of Rot the spear wielding insect guys.
- Anonymous
i've been trying to farm from both the kindred of rot and scarlet lake basilisks and even with the silver foot, they have not dropped a single aeonian butterfly.
- Anonymous
the smaller swamp WEST of the Astray from Caelid Highway North site of grace.
- Anonymous
So dam annoying to farm, prawns have a pathetic drop rate, and them not respawning is just irritating, not like scarlet rot is broken or anything and the dragon breath spell is super easy to get, but if you wanted to use a bow or crossbow it becomes pure suffering to use scarlet rot.
- Anonymous
"They can be farmed indefinitely: travel to Smoldering Wall (Caelid) Site of Grace. Follow the road south and kill the insect-like enemies. They drop it and respawn every time you rest."
Baloney, I've tried 3 loops and got not a single butterfly
- Anonymous
They drop form the basilisks in the Lake of Rot with good regularity. I just did 10 runs killing the 3 basilisks right tot he right of the Lake of Rot Shoreside and got 9 Butterflies. Im only using the scarab talisman, no silver foot because I'm lazy
- Anonymous
they dropped for me from the basilisk in lake of rot, not sure how good is the drop rate especially since I have 50 arcane but it may be worth looking into
- Anonymous
If you're truly desperate to give every boss super-aids and used up all of these already just use the spirit ash Rotten Stray. It's a cheap summon that is one of the psychotically aggressive dogs and afflicts scarlet rot, found easily right outside of Sellia Town in Caelid.
Alternatively you can get a scarlet-rot inflicting thrusting sword whenever you make it to the Altus Plateau by heading north(to the west of the capital that is) until you hit the Shrouded Castle and go past it to kill a human-type NPC wielding it.

Abandoned cave in Dragonbarrow (requires going from Smoldering Wall grace right next to telescope in Caelid then running East across some branches to the cave) has a room with 12-15 Aeonian Butterflies. Be warned though the majority of the cave is filled with scarlet rot.. huge piece of advice would be to run and grab the "Flame, Cleanse Me" spell from eastern Liurnia. It only costs 14 FP and requires 12 Faith. Super useful if you're looking for a better alternative to crafting boluses and don't like collecting/grinding materials

So there's no farming spot for these butterflies? Like they don't respawn?
So you're telling me we can only craft a certain amount of scarlet rot stuff per playthrough?

My favorite attack is when he teleports above me and clones himself like 16 times then grabs me and I die because I couldn't react fast enough.

Drops rarely from the Prawn type enemies west of the Swamp of Aeonia.
They can be farmed indefinitely: travel to Smoldering Wall (Caelid) Site of Grace. Follow the road south and kill the insect-like enemies. They drop it and respawn every time you rest.
guys, thats 2 tipps about the same set of enemies
there happen to be around 6 of these in the ruins near the trader thats mentioned, but there is also a lot more other stuff

I farmed the Lesser of Kindred of Rot at the Church of the Plague so I thought I would leave my data here. I just wanted some Aeonian Butterflies but I haven't reached the Lake of Rot or whatever it's called where I hear the drop rate is better. Anyways, there's 2 Lesser Kindred of Rot outside the Church of the Plague where you meet Millicent. I farmed them for 108 loops, or 216 kills. Received 6 Aeonian Butterflies, 16 Pest's Glaives and a lot of Faded Erdleaf Flowers. Hovering around a 3% drop rate on Aeonian Butterflies. For reference, my Discovery stat is 125. Given how strong they are, they're not very pleasant to farm. Hopefully this amount of butterflies will last me until I reach the Lake of Rot. I like to apply Scarlet Rot to bosses but it's very expensive in terms of butterflies.
- Anonymous
Had one drop from the curse geckos(Basilisk) in Lake of Rot. No clue on rate.
- Anonymous
I need these in large quantities to fight radhan...
I failed 8 times so far & wasted around 200 rot arrows...
- Anonymous
There's a huge cluster of them in the Abandoned Cave mini-dungeon, which is due east of the Smoldering Wall point of grace. It's a cave in the side of a cliff.
- Anonymous
At the end of the game, you can farm them at Elphael. From the roots of sacred tree site of grace (just before Malenia), back to the lift and up to the church. Inside church and outside on the left, you'll find insect-like ennemies (litte and big) which can drop aeonian butterfly. In addition, you can get a lot of runes.
- Anonymous
Planned to invade with pulley crossbow on the off hand with explosive bolt and fletched rot bone bolt but it seems like it would take hundred of hours to farm. Guess I'll stick to poison instead :/
Insect-like enemies walking along the road south of the Smoldering Wall site of grace drop this. And they respawn every time.
4 can be found on a body to the east of the Haligtree Town Plaza grace, after dropping down and killing the giant ants
- Anonymous
I farmed the prawn enemies till I got one to drop.... I got seven of their weapon drops before I finally got one butterfly. Pretty unreasonable in my opinion if that's really the only renewable source.
- Anonymous
Feel like investing heavily into Arcane is going to be the secret to getting things like these and the Trina's Lillie's from Cleanrot Knights to drop in any sustainable amount. Besides Arcane and the tasty silver Bird Feet, are there even any ways to increase item discovery?
- Anonymous
2 Prawn Enemies spawn right out front of the Church of the Plague where you initially meet Millicent. I still haven't seen a Butterfly drop from them but it's a faster farm for killing Prawns only and it's still close enough to the Aeonian Swamp that maybe they can still drop th butterflies if it's only certain Prawns can drop them?
- Anonymous
Oooo I found them around those big cones things on the walls at sellia town of sorcery.
- Anonymous
A lot of these spawn in the Abandoned Cave, in the room with the big flower enemy
- Anonymous
Two spawn as entities in the world in the swamp west of the Astray from Caelid Highway North site of grace. One of them is in the cluster of plant enemies in the middle and the other is behind a tree in the extreme northern end. They also drop from the bug soldiers in this zone, though I only ever saw it when I had a silver-pickled fowl foot popped.
- Anonymous
Aoenian Butterfly can be farmed infinitely in Lake of Rot by killing the basilisks that spawn in there. Good luck with the scarlet rot tho
- Anonymous
Sadly, these dont appear to respawn.
Save them for fighting BigHuge McTinyhorse
- Anonymous
Yeah I don't think these respawn, which sucks. I wonder if any enemies drop them.
- Anonymous
Dropped from both Basilisk and Aeonian Soldier (the one look like centipede/xenomorph wearing glaive) on Lake of Rot at INCREDIBLY small rate
It felt like from soft doesn't want anyone to craft anything related to rot at this point
- Anonymous
Has anyone found a respawning source for these?
I've only found a few in the swamp and they don't seem to respawn.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
I noticed these things don't seem to respawn is that a me problem or are these things a one and done resource?
- Anonymous
Is there any pattern that they spawn in, or a refresh time? They don't seem to respawn upon rest like other materials do.
Woah artificial scarcity!
