Stabs with red lightning spear from above
![]() |
Ancient Dragons' Lightning Spear is an Incantation in Elden Ring. Ancient Dragons' Lightning Spear spell summons a red lightning spear to stab enemies from above. Updated to Patch 1.07.
A secret incantation of the capital's ancient dragon cult.
Creates a spear of red lightning and stabs it into the ground from
above. On impact, the spear will burst into trails of lightning
covering the area.
Spoken of in legend, red lightning is the weapon wielded by the
ancient dragons.
Where to find Ancient Dragons' Lightning Spear
Where to find Ancient Dragons' Lightning Spear:
- Purchase from Brother Corhyn or Miriel, Pastor of Vows after giving the Ancient Dragon Prayerbook
Elden Ring Ancient Dragons' Lightning Spear Guide
- Stamina Cost: 31
- One of the Dragon Cult Incantations and is boosted by the Gravel Stone Seal
- Deals lightning damage and 22 stance damage
- Received a poise boost, which gives it hyper armor during the cast.
- This spell is a close ranged AOE, with many lightning waves spreading out, dealing damage.
- A single hit of this spell will out perform a single hit of Fortissax's Lightning Spear, but the latter spell hits two total times, and has a much higher Damage/FP cost ratio in total.
- Note: In Patch 1.07, FP cost was reduced from 30 to 25 and the amount of stamina damage done to guarding enemies was increased.

How about being able to cast it in air? Allowing for aim of around 90 degrees into the ground, could be cool
- Anonymous
Seeing it in a video, it reminds me of Lightning Stake in DS3, just without the poise casting being an option
- Anonymous
Serves a purpose. Allows me to cast erdtree heal in a group fight when pressured by multiple opponents. For an invasion, the double lightning spear into a flask/bolus/barrier of gold is better... but when fighting optimized opponents who are unlikely to get one shot or hit at all, it’s better to use this single, cheaper spear version and capitalize on the space it made. Erdtree heals power is doubled/tripled by the amount of allies in range and a single lightning spear into erdtree heal is a game changer, especially if I hit enemies or the trailing lightning interrupts enemy mages.

Well I destroyed malenia with this spell
She was knocked back forever and I just spammed the spell lol
Second phase is a bit harder, but the strategy is similar. Lightning spear was a good complement also.
Key is agressivity

This is a melee bomb with some spreading AOE. If you are wielding a lightning build, even if you deliberately go out of your way to break reality and venture into Farum Azula early for this item, it will be obsoleted by Frozen Lightning Spear before and Lansseax's Glaive after gaining access to the Four Belfries.

Lansax's and fortisax big boy melee, this slightly big boy melee and faster, lightning spear sniping and poke, also uncharged works fast enough to dodge quicker enemies in melee.. strike(swap to mainland endure) ok ****ers that's enough
High-yield dragon cult's anti-armor. A sober person would throw it.
- Anonymous
looks absolutely horrendous on a series s with prioritized frame rate
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Would've been cool if it's default, uncharged form would be similar to lightning spear, but if charged, it would be the current, melee-ranged form we have now.

There are 7 different versions of glintstone pebble but only one lightning spear that's actually a projectile.
- Anonymous
the disappointment when you realise this isn't an incant version of the Bolt of Gransax weapon art

By the way you can throw these below you an they go pretty far an deal great dmg
- Anonymous
What if they gave us Placidusax’s version, where it would stick in the ground and cause an explosion
Any thoughts?

This spell needs a slight buff, but it has some uses.
First, it does way less damage than fortissax's, but it has a shorter casting time. With hyperarmor, we can easily land a hit both in pve and pvp.
Also, frozenLS deals more damage because it can deals damage 3 times (2 hits + frost proc) but ancient lightning spear deals more poise damage and it can litterally stun in one hit light to medium ennemies and even some bosses.
I can stunlock some dungeon bosses by chain casting this spell without any dex investment or radagons icon.
It's a viable spell in pve and pvp, even if it lacks of raw power. The only true downside is the high fp cost. Reducing it to ~ 23-25 fp would be perfect I think.
- Anonymous
In PvP, using this immediately after successful running attack gives best chances of landing a hit, especially if your opponent rolls into you. Radagon's Icon talisman or high dex strongly recommended for that.
- Anonymous
So, I did some testing comparing it to normal Lightning Spear - tested on Banished Knight:
Lightning Spear does 1076 while fully charged (1225 with Godfrey Icon).
Ancient Dragon Lightning Spear does 1446. It cannot be charged, so damage was same with or without Godfrey Icon.
Overall this thing gives you slightly more damage per strike, has decent AoE, and on top of that gives you poise. Fair enough, given that it's 30 FP compared to Lightning Spear's 18.
- Anonymous
They should've let us yeet that red lightning, and it would explode on impact creating AoE like now.
- Anonymous
Would have been cooler if this was a stronger lightning spear that was red, maybe make it arc slightly different. Considering how you can get Fortissax's spear much earlier and they're pretty much the same thing (unless i'm missing something like this one takes half as much time to cast or something). This also would have made some cool juking in pvp, like making people think you're using Fortissax's.

They should make it so that you can cast this while jumping c:
Please REMOVE the FAITH SCALNG statement on Lightning damage. Wasted my 3 larval tears just to proof that:
Talisman: Alexander Shard + Godfrey Icon + Lightning Scorpion + Ritual Sword
Target: Banished Knight at Castle Sol (Bolt him from behind)
80 dex 80 faith 20 STR => 2780
99 STR 99 DEX 9 faith => 2848 (STR only improve physical damage on weapon not skill)
99 Dex 99 faith 20 STR => 2848 (0 scaling from faith & STR)
So far only known buffs for Lightning damage: Golden Vow and Lightning cracked tear physick
Please remove the false statement of lightning damage scalable by faith.

A neat little tidbit people might not know about this and Fortissax's Lightning Spear is that these are actually projectiles with travel time, not just melee range spells. If you are high above an enemy you can lob these far below you to attack. Obviously you need to be standing at a ledge to pull this off, but it adds some neat tech to a pretty simple spell. When testing, I think that this version is easier to safely pull this off than Fortissax's version. The ideal situation would be to attack somebody coming from below on an elevator, just be careful to not fall off the ledge in the process.

30 arcane 30 faith +7 dragon communion seal flock canvas two finger heirloom. Deals 802 damage to the troll at secluded cell may do 1092 if the ground hit also connects. GiantsFlame Take The deals 922 damage uncharged. The buff to this incantation was nice but it still is not quite where it should be for speed and power, especially for the very high FP cost. It is worth noting that Catch Flame deals 625 damage as well. I would still use Frozen Lightning Spear over this but the damage for the big spells are all too low. Especially when taking into account the Breathe spells which do immense damage and gain a bonus from the best seal.
I hope they continue to improve these endgame spells. I like them a lot for what they should be.

Its funny how you can get Fortissax's Lightning Spears much earlier than this if you follow Rogier/D/Fia's questline
- Anonymous
I dont know what the purpose of this spell is when Fortissax exists. Damage seems similar to Glaive too and that has better range.

Wow this spell sucks. Takes so long for mediocre damage, with zero hyper armor. The weakest enemies will knock you out of it. So annoying. I have 60 faith and this and so many other incantations just do way too little damage.
- Anonymous
Finally reliable after the buff. Faster cast speed and increased poise during casting.
- Anonymous
After patch 1.04 acient dragon
lightning spear incantation has hyper armor and has a WAAAY faster casting speed
FINALLY i can trade hits with enemies now
With 70 dex you cast this instantly and without interruption
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
They gave it poise in the 1.04 patch along with other similar lightning incantations.
- Anonymous
Does this incantation feel a little broken to anyone? Like, i use the Glaive and get well over 800, but I use the spear and I only seem to be getting 500's maybe a 650 if im lucky.
- Anonymous
Why do they always make these lightning spells shoot into the ground? Almost every one of these garbage incantations is close range with no hyper armor and a slow wind up, making them almost all entirely useless. Why do they so heavily cripple faith while Sorcery and Arcane are allowed to get away with seemingly anything?
- Anonymous
Fortissax's Lightning Spear was bad, but somehow this is worse.
- Anonymous
get enough poise to take at least one hit and then use dragonbolt blessing on yourself to reduce the chance that your enemy will get more than one attack off on you.
- Anonymous
As a Paladin / Faith kinda guy, I’m sad to see that the lightning incantations, besides probably the basic Lightning Spear, are pretty bad in both PvE and PvP. Honestly From just needs give a little damage buff and hyperarmor to the slower Dragon Cult spells and they’d perform so much better.
- Anonymous
There is a pretty good niche for this. You can cast it at the top of an elevator shaft/ladder/cliff in PvP and one-shot them very easily, since the initial bolt travels down
- Anonymous
The damage this deals fir fp cot and cast time does not warrant the current ddamage. Barely does more than lightning spear. And for aoe? It's pretty meh. You basically have be right in front with a long as cast time. The lighting waves are meh. I would mind as much if it didn't f@#ing cost 42 fp with a long staggerable cast time for little reward. At this point you might as well use black blade.

Why would you use this? its terribly costly and painfully slow, you basically have to pray the enemies don't just bonk you out of the long-ass casting animation, just use giant's flame take thee! for massive damage and area effect or catch flame for quickly dispatching single enemies, particularly the beastmem in farum azula just get two shot by catch flame.
Can't imagine this will be very useful in pvp either, maybe a little scary for the gankers.

This spell sucks like all the lightning spells incantations suck alot, they should buff these since they buffed a crap ton of sorceries that were already better then these incantations.

Here I am wondering why lightning was only blue in bloodborne.

People entrenched in Darl Souls lore reading the title of the spell like
*nani?*

literally all they needed to do was add a regular lightning spear but make it red.
well maybe some extra damage would a been nice, but come on.
of all the lightning incants, only lightning spear is any kind of reliable. others either miss completely or take so long to cast it isn't worth it.
- Anonymous
Has anybody found an amount of poise needed to not get hit out of all these lightning incantations? Or will you always get hit out? Otherwise ill stick with dragon claw.
This version of Lightning Spear is similar to Lightning Stake from DS3 at launch. Lightning Stake used to cast very slowly when DS3 launched before the casting speed was buffed in later patches. Ancient Dragons' Lightning Spear does about as much damage as Lightning Stake does (respective to the differences in power levels between both games) while also being able to launch foes struck with the spear, and it also has a larger AoE effect that deals damage secondary to the actual spear being slammed.
I expect the casting speed of this incantation to be reduced in future balance patches, as that is what FromSoft did to many miracles whose casting times were quite high after Dark Souls 3 released.

Deals tons of damage IF AND ONLY IF you are hitting your target with initial lightning spear at near point blank range. It also knocks target off feet, which is neat.
- Anonymous
Depending on the seal you have will depend on what the damage scales off of.

slow as hell, difficult to use in real combat without poise and hyper armor
- Anonymous
Does anyone know how to increase this damage? does it scale off faith or dex? thanks
