Elden Ring Ash of War: Carian Sovereignty Notes & Tips

  • FP Cost: 30 initial cast, and 12 for the follow-up.
  • Deals 48 stance damage fully charged and 45 stance damage for the follow-up (93 total)
  • Deals 100% Magic Damage
  • Deals roughly 20% more damage when set to the Magic Infusion vs Cold Infusion, but only when Attributes are optimized for Cold Infusion version (STR/DEX). Otherwise, at the same INT values, Magic Infusion only deals 5% more damage than the Cold Infusion.
  • This Skill is Chargeable
    • When fully charged, the Skill will send forth a ground shockwave that has 2 separate bursts in a straight line, each dealing roughly 40% initial cast damage. The same target cannot be hit both with the slam and the bursts, however, unless the target possesses several separate hitboxes.
  • Additional input swipes with the sword in a wide horizontal slash, dealing damage equal to the initial cast
  • Skill damage scales off Intelligence, weapon upgrade level, and infusion affinity (Magic granting the highest damage). This means it will do the same damage no matter which weapon you use as long as your INT and upgrade level remain the same on each weapon.
  • This Skill grants hyper armor poise during the cast animation, based on the weapon type used:
    • 118 (Greatswords, Curved Greatswords, Heavy Thrusting Swords)
    • 104 (Great Katanas)
    • 60 (Light Greatswords)
    • 30 (Straight Swords, Twinblades, Katanas, Curved Swords)
    • 28 (Thrusting Swords)
    • 22 (Daggers)

On a banished Knight gs +25 with 18 int deals 1633 dmg (First shot scharged) to sleeping albinauri.
The other similari spell, i forgot the name, the one Who cost 26 fp, with the same set up, does 2331 dmg on the same albin at the same distance.

      Both Magic infusion.

What does this mean? The 26 fp versione is better?

Istg this game is driving me insane sometimes with it's poise mechanic. I have carian sovereignty on a great katana, I have 77 poise (incl. bull goat talisman) and the poise physick tear and ROMINA staggers me out of the skill? Just... why?

I beat the base game various times and beat the DLC once already, I'm just trying to test some potentially fun stuff and **** like this is just so.. weird. Especially since it's basically impossible to stagger (DLC) bosses out of any attack. Make it make sense.

        • Anonymous

this isn't on the carian sorcery sword because this is better than every sorcery that exists, so it being able to cast spells would be useless

          • The hyper armor gets stronger based on the weapon class you put it on. Heavier weapons like greatswords are less likely to get interrupted compared to a dagger.

Is it possible to get Carian Sovereignty at the start of the DLC by running over, and without triggering the rune breaking near Shadow Keep?

              • Anonymous

Either i'm terrible at hitting it or the stance damage is misleading, i tested it on radagon and it takes around 5-6 hits to stance break him, even though he has 120 poise so with 48 stance damage on fully charged it would be 3, 4 hits at most

                • Anonymous

This skill should be able to be applied to staves and the Carian Straight Sword.
The CSS doesn't even need to accept other ashes of war. Just the three Carian Greatsword type AoW.

                  • Anonymous

wish this and the other carian ashes of war could go on the sorcery sword too, and/or maybe the staves. even if they deliberately made the scaling worse to prevent it from being OP damage, just the added moveset and visual appeal of it.

After a couple of quick tests it seems it gets the same Greatsword Hyper Armor on Heavy Thrusting Swords aswell (tested with Godskin Stitcher). Feel free to test and correct me if I'm wrong

Welp, it's been nerfed and without the superpoise it's basically unsusable on bosses since you'll never finish the cast.

                        • Anonymous

It's not the most practical for pvp but it's by far the most hilarious vigor check when invading if you can pull it off.

Holy stance damage, Batman! Also I've hit some bigger enemies with the first swing and it occasionally hits them twice if they're in a sweet spot. Instantly broke a Troll's stance it was very funny.

This ash just completely cheeses the entire game. it's very fun, but it breaks the game with how much stance damage it does.

For anyone struggling to find the cave..

To find this cave go to the Church District Highroad Site of Grace. Head directly *WEST* not southwest until you reach the cliffline and then continue south. The cave is embedded in the east cliff wall at the end of this path

Put this on a Magic affinty Miséricorde, equip Shard of Alexander + Godfrey Icon, do a back stab/guard break critical and then immediately start charging up Carian Sovereignty. Hit em with the full charged AOW and the follow up sweep. Gg

They seem to have changed this during the calibrations patch as I previously saw on release videos of the ash it was poising through most boss attacks and now it doesn't seem to do that any more. It does still have some hyperarmor from my testing however it will still get interrupted by most big boss hits and you will only likely poise through smaller light attacks from enemies in the world and initial combo swings from bosses (depending on the boss).
It was usable on the dancing lion and putrescent knight and worked quite well but virtually unusable against commander gaius and rellana as they just swing to fast and to often and you'll pretty much always get staggered out. If you play with spirit ashes you're chilling however since it can just grab the bosses attention and let you charge this for days.

Does it have to be a >Greatsword< (only that word) or does the bonus-poise work with Light/Curved Greatswords too?

                                      • Anonymous

put this on any great sword(iron has the best stats) tune it to magic and have 51 poise and boom just casually doing 6k dmg poise breaking every boss in the game. that's without buffing myself with talismans, golden vow, flames grant me strength, and magic tear, cuz then it goes up to 12k.

                                        • Anonymous

Absolutely unusable on any DLC boss. The hyperarmor is nonexistent and you won't get even the lowest charged slash out if a gust of wind blows in your direction. Takes 2-3 business days to break the poise too.

                                          • Anonymous

Does the AoW also apply status? Like if I use a cold weapon would it apply frostbite, or would only the weapons hitbox count?

                                            • Anonymous

Make sure to put this on a greatsword. Was able to get the charged cast and follow up out successfully while 2 marionette soldiers were whaling on me. 51 poise and on a claymore.

                                              • Anonymous

It seems best to put this on a GS for the added hyper armor during charging animation? Which Greatsword is best for this?

                                                • Anonymous

What's this hyperarmour that's being mentioned? I'm getting poise broken pretty easily as with regular Grandeur...

                                                  • Anonymous

I presume it deals most damage with Magic affinity. Does it scale with Int score and weapon upgrade level only, like the Grandeur?

                                                    • Anonymous

This AoW is actually insane. You get tons of hyper armor throughout the whole animation and the two hits combined can stance break pretty much every enemy that doesn't get outright pancaked by the first hit. The damage on it is absurd too!

Really its only downside is the very high FP cost and the fact that I now have to mod the Carian Knight's Sword to have this AoW because it makes Carian Grandeur look wimpy by comparison.

                                                      • Anonymous

It drops from a teardrop scarab inside a cave South west from Cathedral of Manus Metyr. The scarab is on the ceiling of the cave

                                                        • Anonymous

Playing this as a STR/INT character with high endurance. Once I manage to stance break the enemy with my Moonrithyll's Knight Sword I switch to my greatsword using this ash of war for pretty good damage
