Ash of War: Flame Spear provides Flame Art affinity and the Flame Spear Skill. Ashes of War can be equipped on Weapons and Shields to modify the Skill or an equipment, or to apply affinities that modify scaling values.
This Ash of War grants an armament the Flame Art affinity and the following skill:
"Flame Spear: Skill of Kood, captain of the Fire Knights. Ready weapon for a thrusting attack and unleash a spear of flame straight ahead. Charge the attack to increase damage dealt and distance travelled."
Usable on armaments capable of thrusting (claws and backhand blades excepted).

This thing just SPANKS. It's a strong chargeable AoW with both thrust and fire damage, which means it's so easy to buff it feels illegal. I'm telling you, put this on a Colossal Sword (oh hey, Fire Knight's greatsword is right here), wear Messmer's Helm / Winged Serpent Helm, Godfrey Icon, Shard of Alex, any fire boosting source, Spear Talisman, charge that and watch as the boss just melts.

Probably not its intended purpose but I love love LOVE putting this on weapons that don't naturally have poke attacks JUST so they can have poke attacks. And none of that impaling/piercing thrang stuff, this one's chargable so it feels like just another regular move in its list, fire buff/projectile notwithstanding. Enjoyable! :D

So why can't you put this Ash of War on the Smithscript Spear?
From the description it should work

Would this still do good damage if I use it on a heavy infused weapon with 25 faith?

It's real use it's not like a projectile, it's has terrible tracking. The real use is to use it a close range distance because the hit with the weapon also counts. This attack has hyper armor meaning you can outrade enemies and gain a buff for your weapon. The only real problem this thing has is that a lot of times you get aim punched and the projectile miss it's target (thank you elden ring)

The fire buff lasts like twice as long compared to flame skewer. Good distance too.
- Anonymous
literally does 50% less damage than an R1. if you use this you are dumb. full stop
- Anonymous
dont put this on flame art fire knights greatsword. it does like 1500 damage to an unaware enemy (fully charged). a regular giants hunt or flame skewer will do 2750
- Anonymous
Pair this with Flame Art Fire Knights Great sword. Highest AP collosal sword I have as a Dex Fth build at 1713 AP unbuffed.

Put this on a fire knights short sword, got myself a sacred lightning strike dagger and the golden arcs and giant golden arc spell and you’ve got yourself a sukuna build
Three ways to easily kill this boss:
1. Bolt of Gransax + Shard of Alexander + Godfrey Icon
2. Fire Knight's Greatsword [Flame Art affinity] + Shard of Alexander + Godfrey Icon
3. Blasphemous Blade build

The ash of war damage scales off faith NOT strength. You can tell by the description that says "flame art" not "fire".

forgive me if i misunderstand how old lord tailsman works but is the duration of this effected by it?

Throw this on the humble knight’s greatsword with the two handed talisman and you’re basically carrying around a handheld warcrime in pvp. R1 r1 true combo softens em up, uncharged spear gives em something to remember you by when they roll away, the weapon is now even more painful to get hit by. Miyazaki knew not what he did when he let this be put on things that aren’t poke weapons but I love him for it.

I put this on Queelign’s greatsword with a flame art faith build and absolutely shredded the Scadutree avatar with it.

People just like to ***** and whine, this is great in both pve and pvp. Especially on big weapons, this thing is great. Quick, good damage, long range, chargeable. If you hit with the impaling motion you get FAT damage. Charging this in pvp can and will throw people off with the timing. In pve it also goes clean through through shields and enemies. A maxed flaming FKGS with this is incredible. (And it comes with the added bonus of making you look cool as ****)

Has enough time passed that we can admit that the two flame ashes are hella mid.

The weapon is buffed before any FP is spent. You can apply the buff without spending any FP if you interrupt the animation before the projectile is fired, you can do this intentionally by fully charging it and aiming off a ledge. If you do it uncharged the animation won't cancel and you'll get the projectile, along with the FP spent.

despite other commenters' claims, this has a slightly higer flat buff when compared to flaming strike. 90 (fl st) vs 95 (fl sp)
the difference in the buff is small enough to be negligible

Moderately useful if you want a projectile attack on a colossal sword, for actually hitting things with a weapon art you still want piercing fang or impaling thrust on any weapon that can use these, or giant hunt on a colossal.
- Anonymous
if you think this is good just go to an enemy, any enemy at all that u like to test on, hit it with this then switch to impaling thrust and hit it with that. u will 100% change ur mind.

The "thrust" part has good hyperarmor, and does decent damage. The 40 sec powerful buff is welcome as well.
However the projectile itself is wet napkin tier of damage.

How's the range of this? Is it similar to Sacred Blade or Gransax AoW?
- Anonymous
needs massive buffs to projectile hitbox, projectile damage
I think stance damage might be bugged with the ash of war (oh boy another bug, go figure). I just fought Commander Gaius and aboslutely SPAMMED the charged AOW on Milady with no stance break. I can guarantee you I was hitting him often enough. Not a single break the entire fight. Something definitely is wrong with this

Chargeable, pretty fast, good dmg, buffable by numerous talismans, and gives you a pretty lengthy and strong fire buff. Also perfectly suits the Fire Knights Greatsword.

This skill helped me beat the Scadutree Avatar, so I don't care what people say about the inconsistent damage.

Really cool ash of war but is unbelievably inconsistent/buggy. The projectile has a habit of sometimes going off at a 45 degree angle and because it spawns at the end of the blade it requires you to have impeccable positioning letting you do okay damage in pve but it's not enough to justify any of these problems and in pvp its borderline unusable as the hitbox of the blade is basically nonexistent. If they made the projectile spawn closer to the back of the blade, fix the hitboxes and fix its meh damage it would be amazing.

A THRUST FIRE CHARGEABLE SKILL = godfrey, alexander, axe, spear, spiketear, flametear combo
Also gives a free flame install??
Also seems to increase your poise to infinity??
THAT ALSO HAS A EQUIP SET THAT BUFFS IT EVEN FURTHER BEYOND?!?!?
Am I just wrong or is this actually the perfect min-maxer-clown-fiesta wet dream?
goodbye braggarts roar, flame spear is my new best friend

I have no idea what is going on with this ash, whether it's bugged, or whether it's working as intended. But it's insanely inconsistent and completely useless in PvP.
My damage varies wildly in PvE, sometimes I hit an enemy for 600, other times for 1500 with a keen milady at 60 dex. Charging it doesn't increase the damage by that much despite the long windup, and even a fully charged flame spear (if it does all of it's damage instead of only 1/3rd for some reason) deals about the same as impaling thrust.
In PvP it's useless. I don't know if it's bugged but I think the thrust hitbox never connects. A fully charged flame spear does... 300 damage. Impaling thrust does 800. At least the buff is nice and it gets hyperarmor?

My Erdsteel Dagger went from 617 to 723 damage after using the skill. DMG bonus seems to be bigger than Flaming Strike's buff (+90 DMG).
- Anonymous
Tested quickly and the buff seems to be 85 flat damage added to your weapon, and this doesn't change with charge duration. Compared to Flame Strike's 90 flat this seems like a weaker buff, but the Ashes obvious serve different purposes in terms of scaling and action. Flame Strike's skill damage scales to Strength, meanwhile Flame Spear's damage scales to Faith (not weapon AR or upgrade level).

Amazing combo skill, you get a reliable projectile with good range AND a fire buff, you hammer them while they approach, then you slash them when they are in melee range, and then you finish them off with a projectile in the back when they are one the run. It's a full package.

The icon in-game is different from what is shown here, maybe they updated it? It shows what is clearly a flame knight with a cape doing the motion instead of the generic silhouette.

Tested on a Dex/Faith build with 80 Dex, 45 Faith. Standard, Heavy, Quality, and Keen infusions all did the same damage. Fire Infusion did somewhat more and Flame Art did the most. That would imply the skill's damage is not tied to the weapon's Faith scaling, given Fire infusion offers none, but it is increased by the weapon having higher base fire damage, which Flame Art provided.

a lot better than flaming strike if you're just looking to use it for the buff

havent gotten to the dlc area yet, but i think this should be crazy good with erdsteel dagger (if this art is good at all)

Very inconsistent damage. During testing (melee range) it sometimes hits for 1K, sometimes for 2K, sometimes for some unknown reason for 1700-1800.
