Ash of War: Overhead Stance is an Ash of War and Upgrade Material in Elden Ring. It is a brand new Ash of War in the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. Ash of War: Overhead Stance provides Keen affinity and the Overhead Stance Skill. Ashes of War can be equipped on Weapons and Shields to modify the Skill or an equipment, or to apply affinities that modify scaling values.
This Ash of War grants an armament the Keen affinity and the following skill:
"Overhead Stance: A skill that starts with the blade held high in a ready stance. Execute a normal attack from this stance to step forward and slash downwards, or a strong attack to deliver a series of downward slashes."
Usable on great katana.

The stance damage is to low, otherwise a fun and effective AoW

It ALMOST look like the High Stance of Oodachis in Nioh...
Nice!

This Ash really f***s now, damage is huge when paired with the rellana cameo and Alexander jar shard on top of multihit buffs. On a bleed build it can easily get over 800+ AR pre buffs (1500+ when fully buffed or over 3K in the dlc) and procs bleed like crazy plus it's dirt cheap to cast and comes out quick.
The literal only weakness is that it's stance damage is pathetic even on the heavy but that's what charge attacks are for~

Man this could’ve been sick for a guts build… but it’s usable on literally 1 weapon in the entire game…

Wish I could put this on my uchigatana for a Musashi Miyamoyo build..

Wow. WOW. An Ash of War usable on a single class of weapon, of which only ONE WEAPON FROM THAT CLASS can change its Affinity. And best of all, it's not the only new AoW in the DLC in that situation (Throwing Blades say HI LOL). No WONDER this DLC scored 10/10 across the board!

Mid AoW. No reason why this shouldn't be usable on.(great/regular)hammers/axes/swords. Even halberds. It's literally just 3 overhead swings.

wish this was usable on more weapons, would have loved to put it on the Great Omenkiller Cleaver and recreate the Horned Warrior's unique attack
Even for adding status effects I feel like there are better options, I hope they give this a buff

Hello Fromsoft, please let me put this on great hammers. The triple downward hit animation is literally perfect for great hammers, wtf?

It's just a unique skill with extra steps theres only 1 great Katana you can put it on and the only way to even take it off is by putting another ash on that katana, may as well have just had all 3 great katanas be unique skills

One of the biggest things I wanted was for there to be a aow like this for base katanas in the dlc. Seeing as this is great katana only, I feel like I was personally slapped in the face.

Piercing Fang:
-Pierce Damage
-More Damage/Hit
-Shard of Alexander, Spear Talisman if you try really hard
Overhead Stance:
-Slash Damage
-Less Damage/Hit, but more Status/Hit
-Shard of Alexander, Rellana's Cameo, RWSI, Millicent's Prosthesis, Godskin Swaddling Cloth

- It's a map.
- No, much more better. It's a drawing of a map.
Has less damage than piercing fang on the R2, but has *much* more status buildup. A +25 Occult Great Katana with 80 Arc will Bleed the Secluded Cell troll in a single use (3rd hit) with Overhead Stance, whereas 2 entire uses of Piercing Fang will not proc bleed. Also you get to use Rellana's Cameo with this for 15% extra damage when held in its stance for about 2 seconds (character will get a red glowing effect and sound cue), which is multiplicative with Shard of Alexander. This skill also activates consecutive hit talismans unlike a lot of other Ashes of War.
All together a very good ash if you're going for Status, and especially high arcane Occult as you do great damage and build up bleed very quickly.

Most new weapon types in the DLC get (at least) 2 unique Ashes of War... Beast claws, Hand-to-hand, Perfume Bottles, Backhand Blades, etc. Kinda disappointed this is the only special AoW for Great Katanas.

Absolutely no reason for it to be exclusive to Great Katana. The new weapon categories are so artificial.

Does anyone know how much extra hyperarmor/pose (whatever you call it) you gain when in a stance? Ive noticed my character tank a few small hits without interruption. But its hard to tell how much its helping. Additionally, has anyone tested if you take any less damage while in Stance form?

Overhead Stance Light are 1 and Heavy 3 fast Overhead Slashes with a Forward move. The Slashes can Trigger Guard Counter. The Damage is bad against heavy Knights, only 2/3 compared to Piercing Fang because Split Damage in 3 Hits. Against small Soldiers the 3 Hits are identical to 1 Piercing Fang.
The AoW can Trigger Millicent and Crystal Tear for successive attacks.
Staggers Knights with a Great Katana but the Stance Damage is very small. Maybe 4 Overhead Stance 3er Combos vs, 2 Piercing Fangs.

What is the point of an Ash of War when you can only use it on one weapon in the game? For me I have fun being able to use weapon skills on other weapon types. Seems useless to be tied to only one weapon class.
