I am just now playing Elden Ring (late i know) and i want to equip this Ash of War to a shield. But can anyone explain what the difference is between Heavy, Keen, Quality, etc. I dont understand the values. I want to equip this for the Leonin/Crucible Knight fight in Redmane castle because i failed like 100 times already and cannot progress. Thanks :-)

I'm betting we find this Neidhardt fellow somewhere in the DLC. Unless he's the Cavalry we kill to get this ash, but I doubt he is.

One of the patches changed this from a flat +35 guard boost to a %. I think it's +%30 but not sure. Anyway you need a shield with a guard boost of minimum 67-68 to get 100 guard boost while using this, Redmane greatshield at +12 will do it. FYI 100 GB means no stamina loss from blocking. If you're not good at dodge rolling pick a spear, the redmane greatshield and "shield up and poke" your way to victory over every boss in the game

This has a hardness value of 4.
Weapons that can match this(sturdiness 4):
            1. Whips
            2. Coiled Sword
            3. Coded Sword
Sturdiness 4 beats hardness 4, so these weapons will not stagger.

This AoW is absolutely ridiculous. Slap this on a medium shield with 100 physical and you can rebuke most melee based attacks. Say a boss is about to hit you with an attack, just use this in the same manner as a parry and you'll be fine. Put this on a twinbird kite shield and you'll have a puncher's chance when a fight gets scrappy.

              • Anonymous

The wiki page that lists all the available AoW has this being dropped by " bloodhound knight darriwil at forlorn hound evergaol in stormhill" as well as the weeping peninsula nights's cavalry. I know that's bollocks but not why no one has bothered to edit and correct it.
This AoW and curved sword talisman makes all the night's cavalry much more manageable. On my first playthrough I used this on a brass shield with the curved sword talisman and I was able to use guard counter and kill them one after the other. It even allows for the separate attacks by the funeral steed to be blocked with very little stamina damage and also open to a guard counter.

It seems you can no longer get the ZERO stamina damage on the Lightning lancer build since 1.0.7: barricade shield has been nerfed for greatshields

                  • Anonymous

This skill trivializes some bosses especially in early game like lionel misbegottens as any of their first attacks will bounce which stuns them enough for a guard counter. Pairs nicely with curved sword talisman and okay for the greatshield talisman but you have enough stability to switch the gs talisman for something else. This is THE shield block move. Shield blocking enthusiasts look no further.

                      For ungabunga peeps like me:
                      1. Use WS on shield
                      2. Get hit once or twice
                      3. Enemy staggers(prolly, even bosses), you dont lose stamina, you can counter attack
                      4. Repeat

                      • Lore time! The shield depicted here is the Kite Shield, which is sold along with astrologer equipement by the liurnian merchant. The shield itself depicts what seems to be a Deathbird. This in tandem with the information on the Death Ritual Spear's description reading "...priests of old who were permitted to come among the Deathbirds. The priests became guardians of the birds..." makes this Ash of War a memento of Sir Neidhardt, who apparantly was one such guardian.

For lore reasons, you might want to try out the royal remains set + Kite shield with this AoW. Then, add the blue feathered charm and maybe the greatshield talisman (that one might be overkill) for almost unpenetrateable defense.

This is still quite a usable ash of war, however one should not use this liberally as one was once able to use it. For medium shields your best usage from this skill comes from the temporary increase in the amount of attacks that it rebuffs allowing one to use this as a poor man's parry with block counters that is much more forgiving. For greatshields that already rebuff many attacks (though it will increase the amount of attacks that shield can rebuff to the point that the knights with the greatswords will rebuff when hitting your shield) and other shields that can use this to temporarily increase the guard boost to 100 it is very good against enemies like royal revenants and the flurry of attacks that they do in a very short amount of time that will stance break practically anything else, and can allow one to block even when their stamina is completely drained.

                          • Anonymous

Not sure why people are complaining about the nerf. It's still a wonderful ash of war, and I especially recommend it to new players. If you're struggling with tougher enemies (like the knights in Castle Sol), then this is a huge help. Most of their attacks bounce off and leave them open for a shield counter, and after a few of those, they'll poise break and be ready for a critical attack. I usually parry a lot of tougher enemies, but this almost completely gets rid of the risk and still provides ample reward. Just be aware that non-physical damage won't be entirely blocked, attacks from above are still a risk, and heavy hitting boss attacks will drain a lot of stamina. As long as you watch your fp, shield state, and lower the shield for the stamina gain, you'll be fine.

                            • Anonymous

65 base guard boost from a shield isn't enough to reach 100 boost with barricade shield, so the +35 boost number above is wrong. From my testing though, a shield with minimum 70 base guard boost will get 100 boost with the skill; whether the boost increase is still additive or multiplicative is not something I got to test out, however.

This is my favorite ash of war. Lets you tank attacks from bosses with medium shield and retaliate with a colossal weapon. Perfect for coop if you play the role as tank and focus on getting the bosses attention then attacking when he has his back facing you and fighting the other player(s). Focus on using this skill while avoiding magic and only attack if the enemy is facing someone else.

The reason this got nerfed is because it enabled players to win anything too easily. It didn't matter if you were the weakest **** there. At least Bleeders, magic, and whatever can kill them in a flash, which needed a lot of investing.
Hoarfrost needs no investment to kill everything. Barricade needs ZERO investment to turtle everything. Notice a pattern here?

                                    • Anonymous

Still a good ash to use, and (imo) still very fun. Best used as a reactive ash instead of just buffing the shield. Using Barricade gives you block frames and nearly instant application of the buff, and has -significant- stamina cost reduction during the animation. Blocking attacks with the initial cast of Barricade does not stagger or push you unless the attack would normally launch you, in which case the attack is blocked and you stumble and roll backwards. The guard boost is often enough to cause normal enemies to recoil after hitting your shield. You can guard counter extremely fast if you block with the barricade initial cast because there's no stagger from blocking. All in all, Barricade is better for Guard Countering really big boss attacks, instead of using it to block all normal attacks. FP cost is negligible unless you're heavy into casting (which means you likely aren't guard countering), or heavy into using weapon arts on melee weapons (which again, you won't be using guard counters in favour of another weapon art).

Nerf letting yourself getting hit and still possibly getting damaged, but not the 50k damage one tap EVERYTHING sorceries, weapon arts, etc. What a world.

They should've just adjust the minimum cost to block and leave this skill alone. One-shotting bosses is okay but slow and steady is too much. I'll never understand Fromsoft's balancing philosophy.

                                            • Anonymous

Ash is useless after the nerf. 5 seconds up time and an absurd FP hike increase on top of it, it's essentially a glorified parry now. At least we have the one spell that does literally the same thing but an entire minute though for less. But still, Fromsoft yet again proving just like in DS 3 their response to buffs or nerfs it absurd knee-jerk reaction gameplay changes are gonna be the thing it's remembered for in regards to PvP. So sad at this point.

The guard boost is nerf, its less than 35 guard boost when activated. To get the same playstyle you would need to sacrifice one talisman for the greatshield talisman (it addes 10 guard boost).

Are the Paladin builds here on the wiki still good with this nerf?

Just started the game and have a couple hours in, and wondering if i should reroll a new character now instead of the Paladin?

apparently they nerfed the guardboost we get aswell ? it should be 35 yet when i block with manor shield which has 67 guard boost it still consume endurance

I tested it today. With patch 1.03. still shows 8fp and lasts 15 second. Only got nerfed if you play online on?

                                                            • Anonymous

i used to combine this with Scholar Shield. So Barricade + Scholar. and then i would run towards the giant golem using a giant bow and i shout "COME ON! SHOOT AT ME!!!" and i BLOCKED his huge arrow.

                                                              felt like Captain America.

if you thought nerfing Barricade Shield is bad, here is something much worse:

you can no longer use both Scholar Shield AND Barricade Shield together anymore. yeap, no more together. GG!!

                                                                • Anonymous

Patch 1.03 Man... Did it really need a nerf this with all the status effect and magic builds right now? I get reducing the FP OR duration to make it more balanced in PvE. Doing both made the skill useless. Now if I want a similar playstyle I have to use the fingerprint shield. Seems unfair.

                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                      • Anonymous

Nerfs!!! NOOOOO!!! Just kidding :) This in all honesty needed a change, and I actually think other than the increased focused drain it's a good change - I tended to use this then not notice when the buff expired, got my guard broken and got melted. Now? It's still strong and still combos great with Assassins Cerulian Dagger, but you have to be more attentive to timing, buff duration and stamina. Thanks From! Just don't nerf again plz Godskin Apostle was melting me yesterday pre-nerf I don't need more nerfs on top XD

                                                                        • Anonymous

Hmm I'm losing stamina now blocking with barricade shield on a +25 brass shield. It's a tiny amount, but it's still there on some larger attacks. Anyone else noticing this?

                                                                          • Anonymous

Still plenty usable but you'll need to put some thought into timing and having enough FP to last the fight now. Really, with guard counters, it's almost like weaker but must easier to use parry since you'll want to time the activation to just before the attack string lands and then counter when safe.

The thing that makes it really inconvenient now is the doubling of the mana cost, especially for builds that don't put anything into FP. Compared to before where you could basically have this up 24/7, now you have to have some blue flasks ready.

                                                                            • Anonymous

Stuff that helps you to get strong ? Isn't the whole point of the game to have infinite ways to defeat the enemies ? Why do developers make solid ass games and then destroy everything they made in a few days ? I'll never get it. This is like bonus levels for skills in iceborne nerfed

                                                                              • Anonymous

No stamina drain ever at such low cost was stupid. Now it's still good but you need slightly better timing and you can spam it less. Great change,

                                                                                • Anonymous

I think this is false, I went to go kill him and I did not get this ash of war. Might be a non-guaranteed drop. Probably only from the night's cavalry -- will have to hunt him down next.

                                                                                    • Anonymous

When I was playing, I discovered what this did and it's never been unequipped. As I progressed into the game I eventually was able to equip a great shield without being heavy with +65 guard boost and I lose no stamina while the buff is active (buff applies +35 Guard Boost making it 100% with a +65 GB). It's turned everything in the game easy as long as 1. I don't get hit from behind 2. Get bonked in the head with 90 degree attacks 3. Unblockable attacks. I feel like a lancer in Monster Hunter as I hunker down and wait for the opportunity to counter. If you're a spear user and have the spear talisman you can attack while never leaving yourself open.

If you have enough faith and find the many fortification incantations (+35% element reduction), you can apply the buff before going into a boss (once you know what element it uses) and take so little chip damage.

                                                                                      • Anonymous

I honestly hope that they dial this one back a smidge. Either make it work like Determination so it's consumed on the next big block, or just remove either the Stability or Deflection, and it should be relatively balanced.

                                                                                        • Anonymous

Absolutely love this shield. I'm playing a guard counter build centered around this ash and a straight sword. I can basically tank anything while its on.

                                                                                          • Anonymous

This is an amazing Art of War. It has a two-fold effect, increases your guard boost (stability) and increases shield deflection by a level. Shield Deflection determines what attacks will "bounce off" your shield, breaking the enemy's combo. Barricade Shield basically turns a Brass Shield into Havel's Shield on crack. Bonus points, while activating the Art of War, you will automatically be blocking during the animation meaning you don't have to pre-use it. Excellent in PvP as well as no one expects someone to block a 2H charge attack from a colossal weapon... and yet, now you can with stamina to spare to counter. It does NOT increase absorption though, so elemental damage will still hurt you.

                                                                                            • Anonymous

Did some testing on using this on a great shield with 58 guard boost, and a great shield with 65 guard boost. The difference is HUGE, so huge that the latter can block Radahn's full combo with barely any stamina loss, while the other is not even close.

Also, a buffed great shield can deflect and interrupt a lot more enemy combos, which makes the encounter vastly easier to deal with. A good example would be Leonine Misbegotten.

                                                                                              • Anonymous

Got my Brass Shield to +18 (65 Guard Boost) and with the skill active, I lose no stamina at all.

                                                                                                • Become the goated block lord. Anything with 40+ guard boost and 100% phys block and you can block through everything in the game at base stamina with ease. It lasts around 12-15 seconds so you may need to spend a few points to increase mana. It will start blocking with the effect as soon as you use the weapon art so you can use it as a ''guard point'' for those that are monster hunter fans.

I tested it out and it made no difference to the amount of Stamina Drain I was taking. I used the skill and then held L1/LB and it made no noticeable difference. Do I have hold L2 instead of using L1?

I am using it on Inverted Hawk Heater shield and am not noticing a huge difference. Did it get nerfed since the Network Test?
