Ah yes, flails. Widely known for their slashing ability, and for being able to hold the damaging portion straight up into the air.

      • Anonymous

It increases dexterity scaling but decreases base damage and strength scaling. Does anybody know how severe the penalty of base damage and strength scaling is?

        • Anonymous

god tier on colossals and colossal swords. if the point blank stun lands the followup will pulp whatever you're looking at

          • Anonymous

Either use with Endure or other special situations - or just for the damage buff - otherwise useless as a skill. The "hyperarmor" on this skill feels lower than actual R1. Feels like you're getting hard minus-armor compared to that, would be funny if R1 daggers stopped this ash of war too. Definitely lacks balance.

            • Anonymous

Put endure AOW on a weapon than immediately switch to the weapon with lightning slash and there's your hyper armor

              • Anonymous

The correct use for this is to slap it on a two-handed twin-blade. Weapon buff motion values on a twin-blade means you gain 150% the benefits from the weapon buff you would on a single hit weapon.

If this worked like the version the Leyndell knights use, where the second lightning strike acts like honed bolt and tracks, it would be so good. Adding hyper armor to that would make this top tier.

I wish this could be equipped on polearms... I know the naginata needs no buffs, but it just would look so cool on so many of them. also they omitted spears, which can slash, but not hammers and flails, which definitely cannot slash.

can someone please remove the part where it says it adds lightning damage and changes scaling, since that's talking about the infusion not the ash of war and doesnt need to be said here. I read it and got confused and throught it meant the buff it gives temeoraily changes your weapons scaling. I spent nearly 30 minutes looking through every resource I could find to find out what were the exact numbers the buff changed the scaling by.

Think a cool tweak to this AoW would be if when you charged yourself/the sword with Lightning, you get a small Dragonbolt Blessing-like effect where enemy attacks bounce off you at reduced damage and leave them vulnerable to the downward swing. That'd be some pretty cool outplays.

                        • Anonymous

does anyone actually have the exact numbers/percentages that lightning strike increases dex scaling and decreases strength scaling?

                          • Follow up on my previous comment: Still using a +25 Lightning Zweihander at 80 Dex, I've been trying this AoW in duels, and I've noticed that if the opponent tries to block the 3 parts of the attack, their guard is broken quite easily. I've broken the guard of two Fingerprint Greatshield users who underestimated the stamina damage this does, without even using the Hammer Talisman, leading to an easy crit. The lightning damage also partially goes through their shield for free damage on top.

The same can be done with any shielding enemy in the game, though if their guard breaks on the weapon swing, the lightning strike followup will stagger them out of the guard break. If they try to guard counter on the stomp, the swing is fast enough to hit them first for massive damage.

This AoW is a pretty unusual shield counter, but if you do get close enough for the stomp, it works quite well.

                            • Ever since 1.10, it seems the little stomp at the start not only staggers, but also deals a bit of damage. A +25 Lightning Zweihander at 80 Dex did 127 damage and staggered an Haligtree Knight for the followup. The damage is affected by Shard of Alexander (got 149 when equipping), and seems to be based on weapon damage splits, as Lightning-Shrouding Cracked Tear increased the damage further, which means part of the damage was lightning.

                              ...Hyperarmor seems untouched though, rip

For those using the map link it's just a little bit off, it's not at the rock crevice, it's in the camp right next to it to the NE right by the fire, use the hermit merchants shack, and come out the castle gate from the backside, mine wouldn't spawn when I approached from the front being attacked.

Too bad this is a bit restricted in terms of weapon categories, while Flaming strike and Sacred Blade can be used on pretty much any weapon.

I want to use Lightning Slash on a great spear

                                  • Anonymous

Flaming strike and sacred blade seems better than this one on paper, but flaming strike doesn't work on colossal weapons and sacred blade's holy boost is situational. This lightning slash requires positioning and timing to compensate for lack of hyperarmor and range, but the resulting damage never disappoints.

pretty goated on colossal weapons like the golem halberd for pvp. the large weapon hitbox means you can likely get the rollcatch on people after the initial hit, and the little bit of extra damage from the lightning coating can make the difference between 4 shotting someone and 3 shotting them

                                      • Anonymous

Flaming strike and sacred blade are both better than this for their own reason. One lingers DMG and is quick, one fire at range. This needs poise to fill the trinity out .. as it is the 85 DMG barely compensates for the luck/brain dead target you need to land the actual ash

                                        • Anonymous

For PvE, if you're using this AoW safely, deals substantial burst damage for being a weapon buff ability, which also is a very good buff at that. Throw this on anything with very high AR as the multipliers it gets are tremendous.

                                          • Anonymous

Desperately needs some kind of hyper armor so that you won't be easily staggered out of the swing, especially with the new changes to poise making anything bigger than a Halberd unpoisable. Any one-handed attack from a Claymore will interrupt you, even if you are wearing Full Bullgoat's + Bullgoat's Talisman, meaning you can't even trade with this because of how slow it is. Hell, even a Two-Handed Heavy Running Attack from a Longsword is unpoisable.

                                            • Good luck landing this with the new poise damage buffs. Anything you can trade with can hit you and roll away before you land the hit, and anything that is too slow to run away will poise break you anyways. Lightning slash needs hyper armor to be relevant. Flame Slash has its lingering hitbox, Lightning slash needs this.

It annoys me so much that the lightning affinity is dex. They should have done something like far where there's lightning weapons and lightning art weapons so that faith users have some lightning weapon options.

                                                • Anonymous

For anyone using this in PvP, if you want to benefit from the bonus lightning damage at all then you need to use it with the lightning affinity otherwise the tiny fraction of damage gets completely negated against flat enemy defenses.

                                                  • Anonymous

I've played over 600 hours and just stumbled across this today, to think there was an ash of war i'd never seen before

                                                    • Anonymous

So, I put this on a colossal sword, and decided to make it heavy so it still scales with strength. Am I stupid?

                                                      • Anonymous

Excellent AOW , use it to stomp the ground in front of you with some sparks that stay on your weapon for a bit to look stupid. The only problem is someone can interrupt you and prevent you from looking stupid, only needs more speed , range , usability and hyper armour. Throw in some damage and yeah it’s a 10/10 AOW.

                                                        • Anonymous

would be significantly better with some added poise and/or the missing follow up thst costs 15 fp being added back.

                                                          • Anonymous

They need to add stagger to the stomp it has like no stagger at all and people can still just interrupt this attack way to easily.

                                                            • Anonymous

If you observe the way the Leyndell Knights that use this, they do the same slash to the ground but then it generates a "honed bolt" like incantation that tracks the player. Where as the ash of war just strikes a bolt at the end of the sword that usually has no effect. A nice buff would be to give it tracking but shorter range than the incantation or other ash of war like "thunderbolt". Or another idea would be to spawn a couple random lightning strikes within a mid sized AOE like "Death lightning" but without the effect build up.

                                                              • Anonymous

I like how fire version gets a cool fire spray into a heavy which staggers and combos sometimes for a self buff Ash of War. But here we just shoot lightning bolt at our own toes with no hyper armour.

                                                                • Anonymous

Lightning version of Flaming Strike but rolled into one press & forgot to change the text. Or it's just broken, there's no way to do the second activation on a light or heavy followup and repeat use just spams it at 10fp

                                                                  • Anonymous

Does leveling Dex shorten the casting time on this at all? Or does that only apply to sorc/incants and not ashes?

                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                        • Anonymous

I have test it on several weapons and there is no second activation that costs 15, and trying to do a quick or charge attack during doesn't seem to do anything. Seems they forgot to add the secondary function. I assume it is supposed to function like flaming strike

                                                                          • Slash skill on a hammer seems weird, but I'll take it. Been looking for a way to deal with the things slash is weak against. Shock and Striking both work. Now I can have them both on one weapon.

                                                                            • Anonymous

                                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                                    • Anonymous

The slash part of the skill scales with your weapon's AR (possibly with a further weapon level and dex scaling addition), the lightning bolt scales only with dex and weapon level.
