Creates supple tail to sweep area before caster
![]() |
Aspects of the Crucible: Tail is an Incantation in Elden Ring. Aspects of the Crucible: Tail allows the caster to grow a tail, that sweeps enemies before the caster. Updated to Patch 1.07.
One of the ancient Erdtree incantations.
Creates a supple tail that sweeps through foes before the caster.
Charging enhances potency.
This is a manifestation of the Erdtree's primal vital energies - an
aspect of the primordial crucible, where all life was once blended
together.

Elden Ring Aspects of the Crucible: Tail Guide
- Stamina Cost: 42
- Aspects of the Crucible: Tail creates a supple tail that sweeps through foes before the caster.
- Users can charge this Incantation before using it in order to add a second wider and more power powerful hit.
- When fully charged, this incantation deals more damage than Aspects of the Crucible: Horns and similarly knocks enemies down. However, the Tail attack takes longer to execute and requires more dangerous positioning
- An effective strategy for dedicated Crucible Incantation users is to rush down the enemy with Horns, and then use Tail while the enemy is recovering
- Deals standard physical damage
- Stance Damage: 13 (first hit), 39 (second hit)
- Recieves a 3.5% damage bonus for each worn piece of the Crucible Axe Set and Crucible Tree Set.
- NOTE: Since Patch 1.07 FP Consumption has been Decreased from 22 to 20, and stamina attack power against guarded enemies has been increased.

Can trigger and be boosted by multi-hit talismans. Not sure how useful that information is, but I've been using it to clear fodder groups like the rot zombies on the Caelid roads.

good, but a little niche. I found a good use for it in invasions to surprise people from around corners

So tired of souls enemies constantly attacking me with their tails. Payback time.
- Anonymous
I don't think it was necessary to describe the tail as supple, but... I'm not complaining.
- Anonymous
Does this Proc the healing of Godskin Swaddling talisman? Given it did Proc the atk boost of rotten winged insignia & Millicent’s prosthesis. Thx guys.

Did some testing on the troll outside Third Church of Marika. Used a +13 Clawmark seal with 170 Incant Scaling for these tests. Looks like uncharged version deal damage 1.5 times Incant Scaling(261 dmg) and the charged version does 3.8 times Incant Scaling(645 dmg) with the first swing dealing the same 261 and the second dealing the rest. Lemme know if there's something I overlooked.
There is a contradiction between this incantation page and the strike damage page. This page claims Tail does standard physical, however the strike damage page says tail is the only incantation that does strike damage. Which is it?

Aspects of the Crucible: Horns into double (charged) Tail works surprisingly well. It does good damage and staggers/flips monsters most of the time. Also good AoE. If you focus on doing Incantation stuff - look into it.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
I have to say, it's surprisingly effective in PvP. There's something about the timing of it that makes it hard to dodge.

Nice animation, more of that. Bit underpowered I think.
In PvE it can be nice against knights. Mind the social distance. Always charged, most times double cast. When he s on the floor, jump attack for stance break.
- Anonymous
Don't get the hate, This is great, just only use the charged version, staggers everybody most of the time and has hyper armor, fun to stagger than dragon maw or claw for dragon builds
- Anonymous
Whoever wrote this completely made up the strike damage thing. Tested on a crystalian, it did not bypass its defensive buff.
- Anonymous
Interesting note: this spell seems to be treated mechanically as some sort of heavy melee attack - if you use a fully charged cast it will instantly proc a heal off of the Godskin Swaddling Cloth even against a single target, and can leech quite a bit off of crowds due to its wide sweeps. Can be a good way to get extra mileage out of the talisman and spell both, especially if you run a dedicated lifeleech build.
- Anonymous
Theoretically, Crucible Knights shaved off the tail of Godskin Nobles and turned it into a incantation
- Anonymous
dragon claw but it has no hyper armor and does half the damage
- Anonymous
This thing BADLY needs some form of hitbox buff. Not only it is slow ass to start, it's tails are ridiculously easy to dodge. In the time it takes to cast it, anyone can simply run out of range. It either needs a faster startup, or better hitbox with it's tails.

10/10 for a Crucible Aspect Incantation.... Very very useful in many situations. ( Decent reach when Charged , Hyper Armor when Casting Charged version , Deals very High Physical Damage , Deals insane Stagger/Poise Damage ). Ontop of that it gains from both Golden Vow and FGmS buffs.... S Tier Spell. Only downside is how minimal useful the Uncharged version of this spell , so you might aswell be a decently geared with good Poise. ( This Spell doesn't even need good armor if you equip Leaden Hard Tear Crystal buff aswell ).

be nice if ya'll could update the tips section to include damage bonuses from talismans like Godfrey Icon
- Anonymous
Wish it was cheap and fast due to how much crucible knights like to spam it. Imo, this should have been a cooler equivalent to bestial sling, but just the tiniest bit slower with some hyper armor, and then make it cost around 16 FP instead of 22.
this incantation is basically "the final boss when you unlock it as a playable character"
- Anonymous
I don't care if this incantation is good or bad, I'm still using it

Another thing I'd like to add that I already mentioned but will go into further detail: You know how LIGHTNING FAST the crucible knight uses this? They butchered this incantation super hard for no real reason, meanwhile, Heavy melee Sorceries like Carian Greatsword and Carian Piercer get excellent cast speeds along with damage. I'm reminded of this a lot while playing around with this incantation, they should really buff this.
I wish this was as good as the Crucible knights, but it needs more speed and damage. In practice with PVP, it becomes way too predictable given how slow the cast time and tailspin are, especially the second tailspin. I recommend going for uncharged tailspins more often as that's the quickest way to use it aswell as going in for trades using it's massive poise. Even then though, the damage is a bit low and It's the second tailspin that does more damage. Going for free aimed tailspins is recommended too. In PVE it's really good at its job, but for faster, high poise bosses it's VERY hard to pull off both tailspins because of how slow it is. Bosses like Malenia are perfect for this incantation however, as both tailspins stun her and knock her over. In conclusion, this incantation can still be fun to use but it definitely needs some tweaking, perhaps in the next patch.

This incantation would be infinitely better if it comboed into the second hit the same way pebble does. Still pretty good given the hyperarmor but you'll lose most trades since the bulk of the damage is in the latter sweep.
- Anonymous
It’s fun but I keep whiffing with it. Crucible Knights gave me a really skewed impression of how far the tail goes.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
i want all of the crucible, not aspects of the crucible ... where is the rest of it, i want it... give it to me
- Anonymous
This incant is also great for setting up for longer cast incants. You use the tail into something like fortissaxx’s lightning spear to guarantee the second spell lands.
- Anonymous
At 80 faith, crucible set and proper talismans (+ FGmS and GV) this thing hits for 3k2 with 0 res to std dmg and deals 40 poise dmg.
+ Knock back + Stagger on first hit + Hyperarmor + AoE ... S tier incantation.

I'm confused about the type of damage this deals. I assumed it would wreck the crystalians because they're weak to physical strike damage, but the tail does practically nothing. Tried it on them with a faith (80) build, full crucible armor, godfrey icon and flock talisman, NG+2. I hadn't gotten any of the smithing stone bearings this playthrough so I started collecting them, the first crystalian got wrecked by it but after that it was practically useless. Meanwhile my blasphemous blade took off 30% of their health with an R1.

They really should make it so that using the Crucible Knight armor makes this incantation have the sweet rainbow color that the Crucible Knight's version has. That's SO much better than the ugly brown tail we get. Either that, or someone will eventually make a mod for it?
- Anonymous
From the pov of a paladin build great for dealing with crowds early game since most large AOE incantations are either very late game or very high on stats requirements. I mostly relied on this mixed lightning strike for area damage early game. Later I recommend using beast claw instead of LS

Good damage, gives you lots of poise during cast, and deals a lot of poise damage by itself. Can perma knockback/knockdown humanoid enemies.
Top tier spell, honestly.
- Anonymous
I'm really glad they added this incantation, it does good damage (poise too)
And i love tails, especially because of how thick and dragon-like it is

My fav incantation, perfect for my dragon build and its a DAMN GOOD spell too. It does good damage and posture damage, knocks down lots of humanoid enemies (including those POS black knife assassins) and its a good mixup in PvP to punish agression.
- Anonymous
The 2nd sweep deals so much stagger and poise dmg. You can even open up draconic tree sentinels for a crit in 2 charged casts, dw you interrupt him with the 2nd sweep, and you can hyper armor through some of the weaker attacks' shockwaves.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Can hyper armor through some of Morgott's light physical attack
- Anonymous
Alternate use: Sneaking up on groups: They're either all dead or nearly dead after the double-tail.
This thing is powerful.

I slept on this one my first go-around in the game, and just wiped the floor with Alecto with this incantation. She almost always does a jump back on the first tail spin and then gets clocked by the second. Staggered her multiple times during the fight, giving me just enough time to get the crit.
- Anonymous
I uhh, tanked a jumping R2 from a Colossal Sword when performing this incantation (58 poise armor too), lol. Is that normal? Not that I complain, actually it was fun af :D
- Anonymous
From a pretty good incantation to one of the best ones. Gives hyperarmor, deals amazing poise damage (you can stagger a troll with 2 charged casts), hits twice if charged along with a very wide reach (and goes through walls). This spell is a godsend to Early faith builds. This is one of those incantations that always has a place in your spell roster just like Golden Vow. The only downside is that you have to beat a Crucible Knight early on to get it.
I hope you like parrying.

Pro-tip:
You can manipulate this incantation to throw off opponent's timing. Instead of locking on to him, unlock and while doing the incantation, turn slightly left or right to him to hit with your tail early or late. Kinda hard to do it precisely in heat of a battle, but it works.
I feel like Tail and Horns are pretty nice in pvp. Now with vastly reduced cast time and hyper armor you can trade very effectively. Hitting Tail and follow up with Horn seems to be a good combo. Knock people back and charge at their face with Horns and send them flying. Absolutely hillarious if you manage to pull that off.

Holy **** the posture damage kicks ass, might be worth running a build with this and a reposte sidearm
- Anonymous
Deals very, very high poise damage when you connect with both sweeps. Was able to consistently stagger Erdtree Avatars with 2 charged casts of this Incantation + a few weapon attacks here and there. Also seems to get some degree of poise after you start the first sweep; with 54 resting poise I was able to tank an Avatar Staff swing uninterrupted.
- Anonymous
Extremely good on Malenia -- I have killed her using only this spell. The first hit interrupts her, the second sends her flying or breaks her poise, and after the knockdown you can charge it up again. If you have good poise she cannot interrupt the animation.

Annihilated Rennala with this. Kaiden Sellsword ashes got a knockdown, then you can basically stunlock her to death with the charged version, the second swipe is seemingly guaranteed to knock down. Might be really good for Malenia too, or other low poise bosses?
- Anonymous
i saw a video where the tail sweeped clockwise, instead of regular anticlockwise. does anyone know how to cast it in the opposite way?
- Anonymous
After studying many faith spells, other than additional access to healing and a few additional projectile spells, it doesn't appear worth pursing. Am I wrong?
Who am I kidding, of course I will set up yet another playthrough with a faith-y.
- Anonymous
This deals roughly the same posture damage as Flame of Frenzy but costs double the FP (16 vs 32).
Tested on the giant in Stormveil castle, it takes 1 hold and 1 tap cast of Crucible Tail to stagger him. Same deal with Flame of Frenzy, 1 hold and 1 tap cast will stagger him.
Flame of Frenzy does more damage and costs less FP, while Crucible Tail has a faster cast. In conclusion, I find Crucible Tail to be better on humanoid size enemies while Flame of Frenzy is better on all larger monsters and especially bosses. Also try not to obsess over the damage - this spell, much like Flame of Frenzy is a posture break spell first and foremost designed to stagger bosses and other large mobs.
- Anonymous
Incredible stagger damage on the 2nd tail swipe if you charge the incantation.
- Anonymous
Damn, another terrible, useless incantation. Sorcery stays winning unfortunately.
- Anonymous
Need to ask, how much stance damage does it do? Wanna know if flame of frenzy beats it or not

It doesn't do strike damage; I tried it on Crystalians with my faith build and it did very little damage, like 19 or something lol.

Considered a "Crucible" Incantation for purpose of buffing from items. There's no specific seal that buffs this or other Crucible Incantations; they're not "Bestial". All of the Crucible set pieces buff these Incantations; a full set of any mix of pieces grants roughly a 16% increase to damage. Stacks multiplicatively with other damage increase effects such as "Flame, Grant Me Strength" or the Ritual Sword Talisman.
Due to it being an incantation, scaling buffs may be affected by the Incantation Scaling percentage of your Seal.

Look, let's be real here: this is not only a great incantation to help break defenses and knock enemies over (with good damage), but everyone wants their own tail to swish around. Be the cute dragon you were fated to be! \òдó/

Does this have hyperarmor at some point of the casting like the horn aspect? Before the tail appears you get interrupted by pretty much anything at 52 poise. I was able to tank 1 light hit somewhere between the 1st and second sweep. But that might have just been poise.

If you have the Black Knife you can spam the WA from a safe distance and kill the Stormhill Evergaol Crucible Knight after a few casts. Cheap, but dead is dead.

One of the best incantations, that I completely overlooked until late game.
Good damage, good aoe, but most of all very good at breaking enemy stance

Extremely good at perma stunning mini bosses or npc invaders

For a boss this tough, this reward sure ain't worth it... Just come back later when you level up a bit.
Is this incantation affected by casting speed? Found no information..
