Ashen remains in which spirits yet dwell.
Use to summon the spirit of Engvall, the Banished Knight.

Pure carry boy, I have been using him the whole game and he is good even against goldfrey and morgott the omen king

I have a crush on Sir Gigachad over here. He helps me go test underleveled new weapons on difficult enemies. I avoid summoning him to ‘important’ fights because he holds aggro so well I feel like I’m cheating. Engvall, Elden Lord Consort

Engvall is fantastic but unfortunately for him, our lord and savior, Buzzsaw Oleg, is simply better in every respect
- Anonymous
You can get him SOOOOO early on and he is still viable up until end-game
- Anonymous
This man treats knights the same way i treat spaghetti . He SNAPS them like it aint SHIIIIIIT
- Anonymous
He absolutely shreds now. Any enemy that can be staggered gets completely bodied.
- Anonymous
Recent update did wonders for Engvall he spends a lot more time fighting now than being staggered
- Anonymous
I think he's too low on the ranked list. Especially with Lhutel being so much higher. Considering both are early game summons, Lhutel seems to do nothing but teleport, Daddy Engvall holds that aggro and seems to do so much poise damage. I actually prefer him to Lhutel.
- Anonymous
Don't be fooled, he's trash. I'm level 80 with his +2 in the Haligtree and he does nothing apart from die. Worthless garbage.

Good but honestly very very slow. If you try dung eater for once, this one seems like hardly-existant. Perhaps that's fine for some players if they don't want ashes to fully tank. Otherwise, beware, this guy is only partially helpful on bosses like duo-crucible, one knight usually focuses you instead of the knight.

i try to summon him and it doesnt allow me to. same with the oumpkin head. anyone knows what i should do?

I don't know if all elite knight ashes are this busted if you get them to +10 or if it's just him, but Engvall is legitimately OP and, quite honestly, is ruining the game for me. Every boss I've encountered so far has fallen to the same strategy of me summoning Engvall and letting him face tank them (because he is literally indestructible- I genuinely cannot recall the last time he actually died since I maxed him) while I just sit back spamming Dark Moon Greatsword beams at them until they die and dodging whenever they slip aggro on him for a few seconds. It was almost laughable watching the Draconic Tree Sentinel unleash all its fury on him, and he was just like "Sorry, were you TRYING to do something to me?" I know this is making me complacent and I'm basically cheesing the entire game, but what am I supposed to do, just NOT use him? I'm not a self-imposed challenge gamer.

I use him all the time. I love him very much and I think it's funny to summon him in Gatefront while I test new weapons. It's fun to just watch him solo 90% of the soldiers while I pick off the ones that have wandered away to attack me.
- Anonymous
Chad summon, especially for mages, because of how easy he is to get and how good he is at holding aggro, especially compared to lhutel. I tried to kill a boss with +6 lhutel and kept failing pretty hard. Switched to this dude at +3 and got it first try
- Anonymous
I always roll with Broleg for my tank summon, but on my new playthrough I figured I'd give Engvall a try. He's just not as good, unfortunately. He's tough as nails, but very slow to draw aggro and he swings so slowly, most bosses will simply walk out his range as they focus on you. Oleg grabs aggro and holds onto it pretty well. Engvall's main advantage is how easy he is to obtain compared to Oleg.
- Anonymous
He's not the "best" summon for Malenia but it's very funny seeing him flatten her with his jumping attack.

From all knights he is my least favorite. I used headless dude ond one with 2 swords on my first play through. Both are better in my opinion but headless stays alive longer. I don't need DPS from a summon. I need it to stay alive and hold aggro. Engvall is not good in both. WHile he spins his halberd preparing for attack I can make a tea and maybe even drink it. So far there is nothing better then Mimic even after nerf. Before nerf I didn't even bother to fight most dungeon bosses. Mimic was able to solo almost every one of them. Summon mimic ran to a corner enjoy the show. No wonder they nerf it.

he is just my brother at this point, has saved my ass so many times

easily obtainable summon that fills the quintessential bruiser role. high hp, poise damage, never seems to be out of the fray for long. imo it's worth the points in mind to be able to summon this fellow early on since they work with just about every build -- casters get plenty of knockdowns for breathing room while melee can combo off his poise damage for tons of breaks. hell, even casters can go in with some jumping/heavy attacks for a break then spam their biggest spells. catch flame comes to mind.
absolutely incredible summon that i'm ashamed to have tried only now on my 3rd playthrough.

Rennala got me down to the magic pixel of health, literally a "I'm still alive? What?" moment. I realize the run is probably screwed but who else but BANISHED KNIGHT ENGVALL, TANKIEST OF SUMMONS, PRINCE OF POISE DAMAGE, swinging his halberd, staggering her and allowing me to get the final attack. Absolute gigachad. 10/10
- Anonymous
absolutely destroys rennala. this guy keeps her stunlocked forever. He even got in the last blow which kinda sucked.
- Anonymous
First spirit summon i've ever used, great memories using him to fight godrick with me
- Anonymous
Still my to go tanky summon long after early game. I have an INT based mage, I spent a few levels to rise HP enough to summon the Mimic Tear. But having 2 INT mages into the fray it's not practical at all as having good ol' Engvall getting the aggro and let me blast from afar.
- Anonymous
Probably the best of the early game tanky Ghost summons. Get him to +5 ASAP and he will serve you well into the mid game.
Watching Engvall use completely disproportionate amounts of force to brutally slaughter Rennala's children is honestly one of my favorite ER moments. I summon him, and he immediately launches himself into a somersault and lands directly on the head of a 14 year-old.
10/10 summon.

This new character I gave up Lhutel and tried out this guy, he's better honestly. A lot more tanky and keeps aggro (he doesn't warp to you so that's a downside but that's it compared to her) and can stun lock most regular enemies AND will do a lot of poise damage to bosses. He's put a lot of bosses into stun for me.
- Anonymous
Love this dude, he's best against humanoid size enemies because he tends to heavy stagger them very often (i.e. pancake them flat on the ground lol) buying you lots of time to heal or charge attacks.
Larger enemies he's mostly a decent tank. Some have already pointet out that he sometimes takes a bit to pull the aggro so that can be problematic for mages relying on a tank.
But seriously it's not that bad, just need to reposition so you don't lure the enemy away from him.
So much fun to take turns with him throwing enemies around with skills that are good at that (e.g. cannon of haima).
RIP xD

I got the banished knight set and the +8 halberd after failing Irina's quest on my first run. I get this guy and since he looks identical to me, whenever I summon him I say "HELP ME BROTHAAA" like I'm Josh from Drake and Josh.
I love him
- Anonymous
You know, he's really good as an early game summon. Sure he's not the most powerful Ghost Glovewart Spirit Summon, but for how easy it is to get past the required boss, it's not bad at all.
Great for early game due to the power to ease of access ratio. Can hold onto until the midgame where you can get summons like Omenkiller Rollo, Dungeater, Black Knife Tiche and Mimic Tear.

Did anyone else miss Chadpion Gundyr? Well here he is in spirit ashes form! Spinning halberds, staggering stomps and leaping attacks on unlucky cretins! AoE damage is the best kind of crowd control for this pointy boi.
Not only is he good in taking out mobs, but this big meaty rod can also take a beating. Call him tanks-alot and say "Thanks, alot." when he drops down the halberd.
Marika's tits, there's more! You can get him really early. Even earlier than that Kaidan Swolesword. Just level up that FP so you can booty cal- bossy call this chunky bro and let him dunk on maidenless demi-gonks.

This is bar far the worst of the “high level” summons. Can’t hold agro at all. Just tested on 2 bosses and it didn’t not hold agro the whole fight. I do not recommend.

This dude is my hero <3 He just eats hits from bosses, shocked me with how much damage he took from Tree Sentinel at +2

He is very good but I often end up shouting ENGVALL, as he always ends up stalking the boss instead of attacking it.
- Anonymous
Why’d they give both of them the exact same version of the Banished Knight set? Seems like a missed opportunity to have the other one wear either the cloaked hood or the unaltered chest piece.

+10 summon for this guy is pretty good for fighting that giant walking foreskin (godskin noble)

I’ve fought with this man in many many fights. He was my first +10 ash. He can also solo smaller dungeon bosses as well all by himself. I consider him pretty much a friend at this point lol.
- Anonymous
Engvall tanks like a champ. I use him as my primary spirit ash in boss fights, but sometimes the mimic all depending. Engvall will *follow* you, just know this, so if you get too far away from him he'll stop fighting and run to you. Not good of course in the middle of a fight. But he hits like a truck and is always ready for action, I'll let him watch my back any day.
- Anonymous
Honestly my favorite of all the summons. It's so satisfying to stunlock bosses with him and watch as they get face planted if they haven't already been poise broken. Really enjoy just releasing him onto a field of enemies and just watching from the sidelines. 11/10 would absolutely recommend with the highest degree
- Anonymous
the lone wolves spirit summons even with no upgrades, make getting this from the grave warden boss and lhutel headless from the cemetery shade a triviality even for very low levelled players just getting started.
- Anonymous
This guy has major "getting compared to your cool big brother" syndrome. In my experience he's a more defensive version of the two with way more stagger in exchange for quite a but less damage output. Sometimes he's just what you need. I prefer him to Oleg when I don't need help with doing enough damage, just need something in between me and the boss. Engvall does that job very well. Plus you can get him like 10 minutes into the game without doing the damn chariot dungeon

So what exactly makes him better than Oleg? He's not a bad summon but he just seems outclassed (which is a problem with a LOT of summons in this game but whatever) by his counterpart which costs the same fp and is way more aggressive and much better at staggering bosses. I don't see any, if at all, difference in their health and even then Oleg still worked better on the gatefront test. The only true advantage I'm seeing is that the grave warden in Murkwater Catacombs isn't the walking stomach ulcer in Fringefolk Hero's Grave so he's easier to get.
- Anonymous
Used this guy pretty much the entire game. Might be top 5 tankiest summons and will pretty much never die in any fight. The damage is not great but he does high poise damage and knocks down very often. If summoned at the start of the Malenia fight, he will make her eat dirt before she gets any attacks in and you can do over 30% of her health right there.
No ranged weapons though he has a strong mid-range storm jump attack. Don't use it vs bosses that fly or move a lot (like dragons or Ainsel).
Will keep any boss busy for as long as you need. Worth the 100 FP for sure.

Weird how he's explicitly called the "Hero of the Fringes" in his description yet he's not the Banished Knight you get in the Fringefolk Hero's Grave. It's like his and Oleg's location was switched.

this guys moveset is cool af, worth the 16 mind needed for 100 fp. gotta love em early gems.

I wonder why this dude wasn’t in the Fringefolk Grave. Is it because the Grace Given Lord (likely Morgott) tried to invite him to serve him, but he refused? It’s said that Oleg accepted the Lord’s offer, maybe that’s why he got to be buried in a nice grave instead of Engvall, got only got the regular catacombs. Engvall was likely the true hero of the fringes, but was never granted the opportunity to rest in a special grave because he refused the Lord’s offer.

What to do when u've beaten the boss but didnt get it and restarted and still dont have him

Are you summoning a big ass ghost knight with a halberd?
No he's my grandpa, he died on the way to the renaissance festival. Here's your sign. (big points if you get that joke)
- Anonymous
He is the easiest elite ash you can get and can really impact early game’s difficulty. He is in a small dungeon with a somewhat weak boss close to the beginning of the game. Just pick the wolf ashes and you can probably kill him on the first try.
- Anonymous
A real bro summon. Has great AI - at least 3 times in "multiboss" or "boss with ads" fights, he focused the target that I did not focus, lightening my load. Quite aggressive, has good pathing. His damage is not OP, he won't solo most of the bosses, he lets you participate in the game, like a true bro. He is tanky. You get him early, and he does not require big investments in Mind (literally).
- Anonymous
Can someone explain why this ash is given from the Murkwater Catacombs, but is described as "gaining renown as a hero of the fringes.", and then the other Banished Knight, Oleg comes from... the Fringefolk Hero's Grave?! Such a strange choice lorewise.
- Anonymous
A key point to note about using Engvall vs. Oleg is they have a big difference in fighting multiple enemies in somewhere like Sellia (where I like to test all the summons to get a feel for how they aggro and generally function). Oleg will sheathe both of his swords any time that combat isn't active, meaning that he has to draw them again when an enemy appears, which takes him a longer time to engage new enemies, and why his DPS is slightly higher. Engvall on the other hand always has his halberd in-hand, and will whirlwind attack in order to engage if he's too far back, so he is MUCH faster to leap in and defend you from hidden enemies. As such, Oleg is better under constant aggression, but Engvall will serve better under intermittent combat. Hopefully that helps sort out how to best prioritize playstyle if you're using them in Ruins or other locations aside from just boss fights.

That boi helps veggie players like myself enjoy that game. Offline OP buddy, who will tank bosses so you can backstab/spellcast/shoot them to death.
I've upgraded mine to 3+ and he face-tanked dragon in Liruna and Magma Wyrm with no issues.
What a BRO.
Definitely worth getting early points into mana pool, even as melee player, to summon him.

Summoned him for putrid tree spirit and my man tanked every hit, for 4 whole minutes and didn't even die.The summons in this game are awesome and so much fun to use.

Seems like Oleg has slightly better dps while Engvall has slightly better at surviving. The difference is minor enough that they are pretty interchangeable. So really its all down to which one you think is cooler.

Wish you could fuse both banished knights into like a super summon. Of course they'd have to cost a lot of FP but it would kick ass to have both Oleg and Engvall to curb-stomp baddies

In case you folks didn't understand it from the posts below me, people have found it in their inventory and it must be because of [[ enter some very wrong assumption that isn't related to the latest patch whatsoever ]]

Did some tests with this and the oleg variant vs a giant or some godrick soldiers . After a few tries oleg does more dps and staggers enemies a lot but he is less tanky and doesn't have a jump attack which also helps engvall tank more by jumping over attacks. My view on these two is generally oleg is better unless you are vsing large amounts of enemies as then engvall's massive swinging attacks and survivability will generate more value.

...*looks down at other comments* ...Alright, I'm not crazy. With patch 1.03 I just...Saw this guy in my inventory. I did Murkwater *aaaages* ago, and it *definitely* wasn't in my inventory then. Well. Thanks FromSoft!
...I remember this guy. THIS was the guy when I was a small level squisy folk who surpised me RIGHT before I hit that places' next Site of Grace! I went back to exploring due to THIS guy.
Aaaanywho. Now the same murder guy can murder foes. He's better than Oleg, great at DPS, but doesn't have any way to mitigate damage. But has strong attacks and great melee AoEs.

From what I can read, I guess I'm one of the few who got it as a drop ore patch. Not that I remember where.
- Anonymous
Not gonna lie, wish you could summon both the banished knight just like a certain freaking boss...
- Anonymous
I already cleared Murkwater, have the hammer. This suddenly showed up in the inventory without a notification after having visited murkwater and got tricked
Is the halberd banished knight with the unaltered armor in Castle Sol Engvall? Other than Oleg, he is the only banished knight to have renown. Not only that, but it's implied that he didn't value his glory as he chose to stay back home in order to watch over his master's castle- which would put a connection between the one in Castle Sol.
But then I'm more confused, if my reasoning is to be correct, why is Oleg there and not somewhere in the Altus Plateau? He left the castle to pursue a life of greatness under Morgott (Its implied that the Grace-Given lord and Morgott are the same person, as Gideon outright calls the demigod grace-given), and was so good at his job that he was privy to Erdtree burial- which is so much more different than the humble catacombs that Engvall's ashes are in, so there's a clear split between the two in spite of them being in the same castle.
