HolyBattlemage Hugues is a Boss in Elden Ring. Battlemage Hugues is a Haima Battlemage and is found in Sellia Evergaol, in central Caelid north from Sellia. This is an optional boss as players don't need to defeat it to advance in Elden Ring.
Battlemage is the normal enemy form of this boss. Battlemage Hugues can be summoned as spirits for aid in battle through Battlemage Hugues Ashes.
Hugues came from Sellia to study the Haima Conspectus at the academy, where he became a battlemage.
Haima scholars seek to quell conflict with cannon fire and the gavel, but Hugues developed a longing for it.

Battlemage Hugues Fight Strategy
The Best Tips for Battlemage Hugues:
- For melee users, try using a heavy or colossal weapon as the mage is easily staggered.
- Try equipping the Rock Sling spell for magic users.
- Bring the Carian Knight's Shield to block his many magic attacks.
Melee Users
Once you start the battle, walk up towards the summoning area, and quickly go behind the mage to perform a backstab. You can easily circle around the mage and continue performing backstab. If you manage to screw the rotation it's fine, wait for the mage to perform the Gavel of Haima and dodge roll through the slam, you can quickly get behind him and do a backstab, or you can just get a few swings in if you prefer that.
If you're using a colossal or heavy weapon, you'll easily stagger him with just a few swings, breaking his string of attacks. Once he's on his knees, you can then perform a crit attack.
Magic and Ranged Users
If you are a magic and ranged user, it's best to have a shield that can highly negate magic damage like the Carian Knight's Shield, he will use the Glintstone Shard spell if you try to create some distance, so you can either time your dodge correctly to avoid the attack or block it. You can try baiting him in using some melee attacks then dodge roll away, then cast your spells/incantations or fire away some arrows.
Alternatively you can just use Night Maiden's Mist. Get the tree between you and the boss and shoot the mist over the tree. Hughes will automatically retaliate as long as he takes damage, effectively pining himself into the mist but you should be safe with the trunk acting as a shield. Reapply the mist before it ends to kill him effortlessly.

This might actually be the easiest boss in the game. He has barely any health and is easy to stun, so you can just spam a multi-hit Ash of War like Stormcaller and kill him in a few seconds. Feels more like a lower level Caelid boss than a Dragonbarrow boss.

Just killed him at RL 120 on my faith build and the Coded Sword killed him in like 3 hits. Uh, expected harder content in north Caelid...

Claymore, do jump-attack to EASILY break his poise, get a free backstab and until he gets up again you charge a thrust and then jump attack again. He won't even get a single cast. I was shocked how easy I got him, first try, went in blind, had no idea.

Let it be known that he just chained Gavel of Haima five times in a row against me. Five. Times.
Frenzied Burst can significantly outrange him, and past a certain range, he stops trying to move towards you.

I was surprised to read that he is easily staggered, the nameless battlemage enemy in Atlus Plateau that drops the battlemage set didn't so much as flinch when I hit him with a charged attack from Lordsworn's Greatsword at +10.

Eternal Darkness works great to suck up some of the lesser spells, and it also buys you time to counterattack or heal up.

Just fought him for the first time, and ill just say this. Carian Retaliation. Even after the nerfs it still destroys him. Keep distance, dodge the haima cannon sideways and parry the shards. You won't even need to swing your weapon

As a spellblade...literally just Carian greatsword on repeat as soon as he is able to be hit after appearing until it staggers or you run out of stam, dodge attacks and recover stam, couple more hits and then poise is broken for free crit and repeat until dead.
Compared all the other bosses/enemies you fight in this place, he is unbelievably easy.

Can be encountered behind a semi-large tombstone outside Selia Hideaway as a regular enemy. Drops 594 runes and can drop the Stone Club.
