Increases physical damage negation
![]() |
Black Flame's Protection is an Incantation in Elden Ring. Black Flame's Protection Incantation increases physical damage negation.
A black flame incantation of the Godskin Apostles.
Summons black fire within, increasing physical damage negation. However, sacred flasks and other such forms of HP restoration are impaired.
The Apostles were all embraced by the Gloam-Eyed Queen, and the black flame was their armor within.
Where to find Black Flame's Protection
Where to find Black Flame's Protection:
- Received from Gideon Ofnir, after selecting the "about the secret medallion" dialogue option. In order for this question to appear, you will first need Haligtree Secret Medallion (Left) and Haligtree Secret Medallion (Right). The dialogue option is unlocked upon reaching Miquella's Haligtree.
- If not received by Gideon Ofnir, it can be purchased at Twin Maiden Husks after reaching Leyndell, Ashen Capital.

ER players be like "I miss tank builds, vigor scaling is so bad in this game, blah blah"
Also ER players "You're too tanky, this spell needs to be nerfed, its unfair!"
bruh

keep a reliable affinity weapon on you, either fire or lightning. flaming nightrider glaive is my personal pick to deal with these guys.
- Anonymous
So many salty phys-main Tarneshed beneath me.. Forgive their maidenless behavior. Use what you want- if it's in the game, it's supposed to be used.
- Anonymous
ppl who use this in duels against honest pure phys setups are a living skill issue

With the -20% healing, it is actually better when paired with lower level healing items/incantations. With -20% on bestial vitality it only takes 5hp/sec down to 4hp/sec. With -20% on great stars 1% heal on hit,
It only takes it down to .8% heal on hit, and since each hit is calculated separately, on a dual great star L1 you get 1.6% heal on hit. -20% on godskin swaddling cloth's 30+3% heal, only gets down to 24+2.4%. And swaddling cloth only takes 2 L1 hits to proc while power stancing... so on 2 L1 hits you can get 24+6.2% heal.... And if paired with ritual shield talisman, you can have an almost constant +60% absorption, and that's not including golden vow, or braggarts roar on top of that. With only 30 faith you can essentially become immortal.

Barely even nerfed in PvP lmao, what a joke of a patch note
- Anonymous
Protection so strong it protected against the patch 1.10 buff pvp nerfs.
- Anonymous
Puts the game on easy mode. You can trade blows with any boss except Malenia if you stack this with other physical negation buffs + have decent dps. I don’t recall there being any defensive buffs of this caliber in any prior from game.

I wonder if there are any players that hate this incantation, but get a chuckle when using Barrier of Gold against mages, never recognizing the irony.
- Anonymous
Not just about this spell, But: Why do so many of you hate high defence? They nerf the hell out of it in PvP unlike DS2 (best souls game) I'm still pukeing over the fact they took armour upgrades away since DS3. I love being able to take alot of damage and have as much HP as possible. I like to tank in all games, going way back to WoW, amd im not talking abkut using a Greatshield and Bull goat, just heavier armour but by all means if you like that combo then use it . It's a trade off less damage delt, slower roll, less dmg taken VS Fast little **** head flying around rolling 100 times per second. DS games arnt DPS ninja stimulators but if you want to play like that GO AHEAD. It's whatever you enjoy. I used to get hate in DS2 pvp from invaders, because I used mixed sets that I liked the fashion of but I guess it gave me too much poise for the wanna be stun lockers. It's all how you want to look and play the game. I see complaining if a weapon is total BS over powered then it should be needed. But this spell seems totally balanced to me. I haven't done any PvP but I have in every other souls game.

This spell proves they didn’t test spells for sh1t in pvp. where is that guy who nerfes defence stacks when u need him? This spell is stupid at high lvl
- Anonymous
The “I dont want to die mommy” buff. Might as well just hack.
- Anonymous
I think it's high time this spell got a PvP nerf. Getting tired of Regressing every other player in the colosseum using this.
- Anonymous
When people use this in PVP it makes my giant crusher do 200 damage :(
- Anonymous
I like how many people I have fought in PvP thinks this and flame grant me strength stack it always gives me a little chuckle.
Temporarily infuse yourself with the power of +5 Giant Armor, become unstoppable indeed.
- Anonymous
using this in lower level pvp is pretty disgusting, i feel invulnerable
- Anonymous
With good armor this + the Braggart’s Roar AoW and the Dragoncrest Greatshield talisman turns you into a goddamn damage sponge.
- Anonymous
This right here is why I exclusively use lightning affinity for PvP.
- Anonymous
Overrated. It’s still good, and 35% is a massive edge…but only if you don’t get punished trying to cast it, and don’t care about healing. In an invasion, it doesn’t change the fact that most hits still cost you an entire flask. In duels, your opponent has to allow you the buff for it to make the impact. If you get hit by stormblade, sacred blade etc, it was canceled out. Frost cancels out these buffs too.
- Anonymous
For PvP, get your faith to 30 somehow (I recommend the Marika and two finger talismans together with the grafted blade). Then cast it, take of any of the stat boosting for your normal equipment and start the fight. If you run out use either boiled crab or prawn as a backup. Not as strong but still useful.
- Anonymous
Am I the only one that this incantation isn’t working for? I let an enemy do their three hit combo on me, fully healed with a flask, then used this buff and let them do another of the same three hit combo and it was the same amount of damage.
- Anonymous
I just beat Maliketh and haven't fought Gideon yet, and this is available for purchase at the husks, along with Lord's Divine Fortification and Law of Causality.
- Anonymous
I use this once time against giant crusher with royal knight resolve, they look confuse that they barely harm me instead of one shot.
- Anonymous
This incant isn't essential for NG+, but you will notice its presence and miss its absence in NG+. And 70 second duration isn't bad compared to your other options for body buffs.
- Anonymous
Stack with blessing of the erdtree and heavy armor in duels. Start with regen, 12 hp a second. Earn black flame protection in combat. Profit. This allows you to move while casting so earning BFP in a duel is ez. Turns 12hp/second regen into 9hp/sec. Flame of the fell god lets you cast BFP for free or regen etc.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
I didnt got it from gideon, neuther killed him, but purchased it from the twin maidens(I got both halves after defeating maliketh)
- Anonymous
very very good before you reach 60 vigor and max out your flasks, drops of sharply however afterwards
- Anonymous
Severely underrated. Use this and greyolls's roar and you will be taking less than half physical damage. I literally traded hits with taniths crucible knight while all he did was tickle me. Something tells me this is powerful against malenia. 10/10 one of the best buffs of the game
for whatever reason, you can't use this in the Roundtable Hold.
- Anonymous
full bull goat, dragoncrest greatshield, bullgoat talisman and this, you can actually trade damage with revenants
- Anonymous
Run this + dragoncrest greatshield if you don’t want to blow souls on vigor
- Anonymous
Best Body Incantation.... Ever... You gain +35% Physical Defense for 91sec when equipped with Old Lords Talisman. ( With Erdtree Blessing HP regain you also gain the same amount being Bonus upto total 1404HP in 117sec , for 12HP per tick ). This means only and ONLY HP and FP Flasks are reduced... So any HP/FP regained from Talismans , Weapons , Arts etc. Are not effected ;) 10/10 Spell for me its a must specialy in NG+6 and MaxNG+.
- Anonymous
Does this reduce the healing from Lifesteal Fists, Blood Tax, and Taker’s Flame? Or Taker’s Cameo, and Rykard’s and Malenia’s Great Runes?
- Anonymous
Black Flame's Protection+Golden Vow+Opaline Hardtear+DragonCrest Greatshield Talismán+ Holy Ground= Ultimate Defense (69 Naked, 80 with Bullgoat set)
Add some Regen and You got an Amazing build
Does anyone know whether absorption or flat defenses are calculated first?

I've cleared the Haligtree area, I've defeated Malekith AND Gideo. I was not gifted this incant when speaking to Gideon not is it appearing in the Twin Husk inventory for purchase.
- Anonymous
Incredibly useful on high NG+5-7 cycles where late game bosses and enemies can easily one shot you (especially Godfrey, if he grabs you in his 2nd phase it's almost always a one-shot even at 99 vigor). Reduction in healing is meaningless if you're not alive to heal.
- Anonymous
Crazy strong resist, can go up to 70% mitigation with Golden Vow and Dragoncrest Shield. If you use this, you almost have to consider how much mitigation is too much, and think about pruning away other defenses that you don’t need anymore.

This + Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman help a lot against Malenia & Godfrey, especially if you happen to miss Rya/Blackguard questline for the boiled crabs.
Gideon refuses to give me the incantation. I've already gotten multiple graces inside of haligtree.

Doesn’t seem to stack with Golden Vow at all, Vow overrides it.
- Anonymous
Whenever people cast this I can't hit them during their animation. Is this happening for anyone else?
- Anonymous
I didn't defeat gideon, only killed makelith and this was up for purchase. so kinda wrong wiki
- Anonymous
Don't use this when using the Mimic tear Summon. He will just use this instead of being offensive.
- Anonymous
dragoncrest greatshield talisman + this + decent heavy armor + 50 vigor = Facetank Malenia's waterfowls without breaking a sweat.
- Anonymous
The Godslayer seal does NOT boost Blackflame's Protection. I just compared the numbers between Godslayer ,Gravelstone, and Clawmark Seals. They are exactly the same.
This is a perfect buff incantation for duels, since most of the time neither you or your opponent will be healing, making the debuff effectively null.
- Anonymous
It also doesn't stack with: Magic Fortification, Fire Fortification, Lightning Fortification, Divine Fortification, Lord's Divine Fortification, or Protection of the Erdtree.
The additional damage negation is nice, but keep in mind for tank builds that Blessing of the Erdtree is brought down from 12 HP/Second to 9 HP/Second from this spell.
- Anonymous
these wiki's should have base duration for spells and items that buff you

Says purchasable after journey 5, But I guided my friend to buy it on Journey 1. maybe a typo?

In the past, i have used Iron Body pyromancy, Butcher's Cleaver, and every healing talisman to drain tank PvE and PvP.
Sad to see it nerfs healing in this game.
- Anonymous
It DOES cut the healing from HP over time effects. That I tested, it cut Blessing of the Erdtree from 12 HP/tick to 9 HP/tick, and notably it cut the Blessed Dew Talisman from 2 HP/tick to just 1 HP/tick. Which means it's the expected 20% cut, but rounded up to the next whole point (it never varied, in case you were wondering if you'd get the accumulated remainders). I'd say that's a heavy-handed but fair way of balancing it. In summary, this spell is a great 15% net gain in survivability against physical attacks (35% negation - 20% all-healing penalty), but drops off quickly if you're also receiving lots of unmitigated elemental/effect damage.
- Anonymous
you do not have to have the medallion, you can get this from him if you visit Miqulleas hagletree, which you can get to with a jump from the giant zone near a shack
- Anonymous
Confirmed this is in the same group as Vyke's Dragonbolt as well. You have to pick this, Flame Grant Me Strength, or Vyke's Dragonbolt.
Interestingly, the weapon buff from Vyke's Dragonbolt remains when replacing its body buff with this. In case you wanted a red lightning weapon without the red body lightning. Though without the body buff, Vyke's Dragonbolt is directly inferior to Electrify Weapon.

The miracle gives 35% physical negation to all physical types for 70 seconds, regardless of what seal you use to cast it. It doesn't seem to stack with any meat (so probably doesn't work with crabs/prawns...turtle necks seem to be the exception)
The 35% it gives is stacks multiplicatively with your:
1) armor
2) talismans
3) golden vow or commander's standard
So if you are at 50% damage negation before applying the buff, the buff will give you 17.5% damage negation. If you're at zero damage negation, you'll get the whole 35%.
- Anonymous
For anyone wondering, after some testing the Godslayer Seal, unfortunately, does not buff any aspect of this incantation, not duration nor resistance. Only offensive incantations get enhanced by the seal it seems. The only way to buff its duration is through the Old Lords Talisman which brings it from 70 seconds to roughly 90 seconds.
- Anonymous
SPOILER Tip: If you already killed Gideon, the twin merchant in Roundtable Hold sells Black Flame Protection and Lord's Protection
- Anonymous
You need to enter Miquellas Haligtree area for this dialogue to appear.
- Anonymous
This seems really good for duels, as the custom is not to estus anyways
- Anonymous
As of 03/15/2022, you receive the full benefit of this spell during PVP
(as opposed to how gimped the Dragoncrest Geatshield Talisman's physical damage negation gets when in PVP)
W/ no armor, physical damage WILL reduce by 30%
(If you're wearing armor, of course damage negation is multiplicative so it won't add a flat 30% extra, but it will work as you expect in PVP as it does in PVE)
- Anonymous
Gideon has "about the secret medalion" option as soon as you get the first part, but by choosing this he just gives hints on what to do further, meanwhile he gives you this incantation after not only reaching the snow area after the lift, but also by traveling through sending gate locked behind barrier in that area town to a giant tree place.

So, it obviously cuts healing down quite a bit, but how does it interact with heals over time like Bestial Vitality or that HP regen talisman since they're so low?
- Anonymous
This is bugged, it also reduces the amount you get from Flask of Wondrous Physick if you use the 50% healing tear.
- Anonymous
This also does not stack with 'Protection of the Erdtree', probably because similarly 'Flame, Give Me Strength' does not stack with Protection of the Erdtree aswell.

Info is wrong or people are doing something wrong(?). When you get one of the medallions you get invaded by Ensha upon returning to Roundtable Hold and he mentions the medallion, to which you get the dialogue option "about the secret medallion". He did not give me the spell. Later, I returned with both medallions and it changed to "the secret medallions have been reunited" or something similar, and again - no incantation and the dialogue option disappeared.
- Anonymous
For those who don't have access to Gideon, the Twin Maiden Husks sell this spell
- Anonymous
Didn't get it after selecting the dialogue option, is it during the quest you get this spell or is the info just wrong?

you have to reach MIQUELLA'S HALLIGTREE first, then talk to Gideon Ofnir. if you don't reach there, cannot find "about the secret medalion" on dialogue option.
- Anonymous
Are these numbers correct? I have 40 physical defense normally with Dragoncrest Greatshield talisman, and after using this one i have 60, not 54 as i would if it buffed defense by 35%.
- Anonymous
Got to 65-68% negation with this one. Pretty useful I would say. Holds on for about 1-2minutes. Flask recovery is reduced but you also take less so I take it.
If you know an enemy only deals physical I would say this one makes it pretty much a cakewalk.
Seems to add about 20% to all physical resistances. So if before you had 40%, now you will have about 60%. Also seems to decrease the flask heal by 25%.
- Anonymous
This doesn't just increase physical protection, this also reduces how much your estus heals by

i'm at a point where gideon isn't at the round table any more, how would i get it in this case?

I think you receive it after completing quest for Ofnir. You need to find and defeat Mohg the blood lord. After that you talk to him and he rewards you
- Anonymous
My comment didn't get accepted last time, but Gideon Ofnir gives it to you, once you reach Haligtree you can go back and tell him about it. He'll deduce Melania is there.
Grants 35% physical defense while reducing HP recovered by 20%.
If you use this in colosseum duels you are actually satan
