Black Flame Blade is an Incantation in Elden Ring. Black Flame Blade temporarily envelops your right-hand weapon in a black flame, increasing damage.

A black flame incantation of the Godskin Apostles.

Engulfs armament held in the right hand with black flame. This incantation can be cast without delay after performing another action.

Black flame is weighty. After dealing damage it continues to sap foes' HP for a very short time.

Where to find Black Flame Blade:

Godskin Prayerbook Location:

  • Location: Stormveil Castle
  • Nearest Site of Grace: Liftside Chamber
  • From the arch doorway exiting to the courtyard, head straight into the area with all the enemies and hug the right side and you'll see a set of stairs that goes underground.
    thisway godskin prayerbook
  • You'll find a room that is guarded by four Giant Rats, and ahead, is a doorway that is blocked by a white fog. To dispel this, you will need to use a Stonesword Key on the Imp Statue. You'll find a stock room upon unlocking the doorway, which has a treasure chest holding the Godskin Prayerbook, and another chest holding the Godslayer's Seal.

Black Flame Blade Guide

  • Godskin Apostle Incantation
    • Howver, neither its fire damage nor its DoT effect are boosted by the Godslayer's Seal.
  • Buffs weapon with Fire attack power
  • Fire: 0.65 * Incant Scaling (Faith portion)
  • Duration: 7 seconds
  • Stamina Cost: 10
  • Black Flame Blade has a very short duration but fairly quick cast time (especially between actions) similar to Drawstring Grease, and should be used immediately before attacking, or between attacks for a continued combo.
  • Puts a 2 second damage over time effect on enemies struck while the buff is active. Dealing 20 damage plus 20 more for every 1000 HP the enemy has. This results in at least 2% of Max HP or more damage over time.
  • This burning effect does not scale or stack, but is refreshed with each hit.
  • The burning effect can be applied using weapon skills.

This Blackflame Weapon incantation gets really useful in NG+ cycles and Higher.... Cuz of the increased HP enemies and Bosses get , this'll regardless deal roughly 2% Max HP damage towards Bosses with a single hit from that same Proc DoT. ( Rendering it almost too OP specialy with Natural Katana or Bleed weapons ontop ). The 7sec Buff is Balanced due to how quickly you cast and buff your weapons with this Bad Boy... Just remember this doesn't stack with Blackflame Ball spell the DoT damage is the same just the initial damage would be different depending on your Faith instead of your Dex/STR + Faith with Blackflame Weapon.

        Secret Technique:
Erdsteel Dagger is the only weapon that scales naturally with faith that you can change the Ash of War.
        Slap Blackflame Blade on it.
Scale stats for Heavy & Faith.
Combine it with Storm Stomp or Hoarfrost Stomp.
A frost that burns away health or a wind that burns away enemies. Combine it with any physick or talismans that due boost to flame damage. Congrats you melt people.

Some people say that this buff would be too op in pve if it lasted longer... Meanwhile black flame tornado, godslayer's greatsword, bleed builds, comet azure, meteorite spells, ancient dragon lightning bolts and death lighting, moonveil, envoys long horn bubble skill, scarlet rot, pest threads, clean rot knight scythe disks, blasphemous blade, and many more: boss health goes brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
There is already a lot of op stuff in elden ring that just melts pve, adding longer duration black flame buff won't change that...

You could argue that it would be "too op in pvp" due to how status effects and lingering effects are coded (as fire damage is factually worst damage type for pvp) , but blood flame bleed, electrify weapon sheer damage, madness, sleep, and miriad other op stuff already exist in pvp. Buffing black flame blade duration at most will just make shield turtles life more difficult, but it wouldn't change elden ring high damage meta...

Killed the Godskin Apostle at divine tower with it. Level 46 and a +4 estoc, That percentage damage is cracked

            • Anonymous

Not gonna get buffed duration cause peor terrified it would be op in pvp... when as is, it's practically worthless... ya let's keep something nonviable cause someone might actually start using it in pvp

I've found this to be a great go-to against very high health bosses/enemies. Between the enemy health% damage which ignores resistances and its low FP cost, it gives you a considerable boost in situations where your swings aren't doing very large amounts of damage to the boss. This comes up during a few bosses in NG (Fire Giant and Elden Beast), but this is also very helpful for either NG+ or challenge runs (the very low faith requirement might also apply here), where your dps might otherwise be struggling against many bosses. The other blackflame incantations run into the problem of being slow and dodgeable against more agile opponents, as well as hogging more of your FP.

Also, and I cannot overstate this, it looks very cool, and the fact you can apply it while leaping at your opponent is just the best.

Does the 2% damage apply to every tick in prelates charge? If so, then my god it would slay elden beast faster than gideon the all malding

This got mentioned down below, but remember that applying this buff after rolling, while jumping, after back-stepping or entering stealth (short window after entering stealth) reduces the cast time and recovery time by around 50%.
This makes this spell much more viable as a combat spell.
For high health enemies like Malenia, one hit will chip 360 true damage + the fire damage bonus (it ain't much but still adds around 100 damage after mitigation).

Wish the duration was longer. The only reason I'll ever use this over Bloodflame Blade or Black Flame (the fire ball) is for style points. Black Flame does more damage after scaling and using the right seal AND has range. Bloodflame Blade stacks and if you apply it enough your enemy can hemorrhage once a second for 10% health.

Really, they could increase the duration to 60 seconds and it still wouldn't do more damage than Bloodflame Blade for a player who knows how to use both to peak efficiency.

I feel like too many people sleep on this incant because it doesn’t take chunks out of bosses hp and/or the duration is too short. Also think people don’t realize how broken it would be in pve if it lasted as long as the other buffs.

This incant can SHRED bosses, especially slow ones. It’s a boss killing incant. You won’t see see the results instantly but it’s apparent in like a minute into the fight. When I was doing early game coops with it, it would shred Godrick’s first phase a little over 30 secs.

But I think the learning curve for it is too high for casual players because of it’s short duration. Maybe make it last 30 secs with a high fp cost or just leave it the way it is and just add another 7-13 secs to the duration.

I’ve been running a frost and black flame int/dex build rn and it’s hands down one of the funnest play throughs I’ve had.

                        • Just so you know, this is NOT enhanced by the Godslayer's Seal. I just tested, and there was no difference in damage between clawmark and godslayer's as of patch 1.05.

This this is busted for daggers/twinblades or anything that can land a lot of hits, couldn't have defeated fire giant ng+6 without it. Even a 10second duration will break the game. Still it's utterly useless for anything slower than a greatsword.

                            • I'd prefer a version of this spell that last like as long as other weapon buffs, if it would be too strong, maybe make it less fp-efficient than now, but this is such a waste of an amazing incantation...

would be a shame if this did as much damage as poison armament does with the full poison proc in the same time as it takes to proc the poison... oh wait. I almost forgot that the most effective way to use poison in Elden ring is on yourself...

i feel like adding even just 3 extra seconds for a nice 10 could make this so much more useful. on a separate note, i haven’t seen very many people mention that you can cast this in the air

Very niche incantation, but damn if it isn't fun to watch it deal thousands of damage to high-health bosses. As a casual PvE player, I love using this in tandem with Double Slash -- it creates a rewarding minigame of finding big openings to quickly buff & get big damage in.

Variable duration buffs have been a thing since at least DS3 with the pine resin and pine resin bundle etc. You can either take longer to apply the buff and have a longer duration or shorter application and shorter effect. This incantation is the same thing. I'm using it with my faith character and it's great.

Probably the most reliable DOT effectagainst bosses, however really hard to use properly. It is obviously better than poison, which deals an enormous 4% of target boss hp over 30 seconds (sarcasm), in theory dealing the same damage 7 times faster. It has to be recasted, that is a downside, but the cast is pretty fast on itself, even without Radagon's or huge investments in Dex. Blackflame is in general less effective than Scarlet Rot, but there are bosses with huge healthpools that are immune to being rot; mostly Elden Beast and Malenia. Also, to inflict red plague you have to build it up by hitting either with dedicated weapons or with arrows, both being extremely easy to dodge by agiles like Maliketh or hell, even Morgott. But everything up till this point is overshadowed by a single statement here, that may cause heavy arguing: it has the best looking cast animation out of every single buff in the entire series

In addition to running and rolling, you can increase the speed of the spell by Running, Jumping, Backstepping, and Crouching!

They either need to extend the duration or make the spellcast a quick attack as well while buffing to make this viable.

Attention, wayward spirit looking for earnest advice on the internet: ignore more than half of the other comments on this page. You only need to know two things: (1) does a boss/enemy have a gigantic health pool that you'd like to see cut down like so much chaff? Congrats, this is the tool, now get to work on making it fit (finding the right weapon might be tricky. Recommend anything you can one-hand that is either FAST or has LONG RANGE, both is best). (2) Does the boss/enemy NOT have a gigantic health bar? Look elsewhere, you'll likely find a better alternative soon enough. Please trust me, whoever you are, this is all true. [Seriously. Trying to make a level 60 build, was freaking STRUGGLING with that damn Deathbird. Nothing was working, not surprising since I'm generally a mid-tier player, and then thank GOD: this freaking incantation paired w/ a random ass Pest's Glaive (range/weight issue, don't ask), then cut to my confused face slowly transitioning into one of sudden realization. The percentage it shaves off is REAL, respect it).

What this thing needs is a better scaling to damage ratio. It exists to be the incantation equivalent of drawstring greases, which are the shorter duration, more powerful variants of the standard. However, black flame blade's damage is weaker than it's counterparts(except for blood flame blade, but hemorrhage makes up for it).
If the damage was, say, 0.85/0.95 or even 1.0 multiplied by the seal scaling, it might have a niche. As is, the only good thing about it is looks.

there is currently a bug with this spell where doing the jumping cast has about a 25% chance to cost double the FP it normally would. I believe this has something to do with landing on your feet before you finished the first cast, the game will assume you want to cast it again, and register another cast immediately when you land. hopefully gets patched sometime soon as the jumping buff not only covers the most distance, but looks really cool!

                                                    • Anonymous

I know the chances of Elden Ring dev teams checking Fextralife for balance update ideas is probably 1%, but here is my proposed change for Blackflame Blade. Make it cost about 30 FP, but what it does is create 5 or so temporary items (similar to how invading generates 3 phantom fingers, so I know coding for this could exist in the game at least). These items would essentially be like the pine bundles/drawstring grease, but a black flame version. You could also set a permanent quickslot in your inventory for when you create more via the spell. They have the exact same duration and effect as normal, and rest inside your inventory untill you die or use them all, which it needs to be recasted to create more.

I've done a full playthrough doing a Blackflame Blade build, and even used it in PVP a lot, and this would change 99% of my problems with this spell while keeping the core mechanic of it intact:

1: efficient FP to damage/usefulness to compete with the other buffs, as long as you think tactically about when to apply and attack
2: it still keeps it's niche of being a short-lived but extremely efficient debuff to large HP targets, needing to be applied at just the right time to counterattack or apply pressure to players, as the burn can catch them even if they roll
3: buff builds in general tend to be almost entirely focused on actual melee combat, so having to invest so much mind (i found 20 to be a decent sweetspot personally, but it's still quite a lot) is counter-intuitive. this change would greatly benefit that playstyle without compromising what Fromsoft intended with this spell as explained above

                                                      • Anonymous

Combine black flame with highland axe, beasts roar & fire damage increases to insane effect. Just beat Mohg the Omen at level 25

                                                        • Wish it had a longer duration. About 20 seconds would be totally fine. It looks damn awesome but I personally don't like how you have to use it. It has it's niche. But this niche is sadly quite small.

I use this in conjunction with a scarlet rot+poison set for a DoT build. Apply scarlet rot and poison first, then swap to a weapon to enchant with this incantation and just watch their hp melt. I personally use the Pike to enchant with black flame for the long reach poke.

Not super effective solo unless you're abusing a really tanky summon or Bloodhound step to keep up aggression.

However, really good in coop where bosses have a massive health buff and can split aggro. Stab a boss in the ass with a quick weapon while they're preoccupied with someone else and you can possibly do more with this than a big heavy fully buffed weapon thanks to percentile damage.

Niche incantation. It won't work very well if you don't have the patience to reapply it and/or like using a big bonk weapon, but it really shines in conjunction with faster weapons. I run a hybrid dex/faith build and this thing alongside the godskin stitcher SLAPS. I can often land three hits in quick succession, sometimes even more, and it just melts bosses.

Pros: Low FP cost, grows in effectiveness the more HP the enemy has (especially useful against runebears, I can kill them twice as fast as usual with this).

Cons: You have to reapply often, which means if you don't fight alongside spirits you'll need to be careful with it. Constant recasts mean you'll run out of FP quickly if you alternate between incantations (which I don't recommend).

                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                      • Anonymous

Surprisingly fun in pvp. The DoT will still apply if its dodged but the hitboxes connect, so its a good picking tool instead of the usual boring fan dagger pick. There really are no advantages over using a regular buff aside from this but I prefer the playstyle of it, managing fp for bursts of aggression, slipping casts into fights, to be perfectly honest I'm mostly using this to get good at it so if it gets buffed I can make good use of it. It really needs more duration, I have to sacrifice a talisman slot just to get it to 9 seconds instead of 7 but I'm willing to do it just because of how fun it is. Also make the Godslayer seal actually boost it, its literally a godslayer incantation, make it do more power or increase the DoT or something.

                                                                        • Anonymous

15 FP for 7 Seconds? I would say 7 FP for 7 Seconds or 15 FP for 15 Seconds. Otherwise this skill is really bad.

                                                                          • Anonymous

This incantation suffers from there being no “raw” infusion equivalent in ER. Sure you can just use standard, but if you’re doing pure faith and investing only the bare physical requirements for a weapon, the damage is underwhelming.

                                                                            • Anonymous

The duration is a bit too short for the cost and time. It should last for 12-14 seconds. With only 7 seconds after casting, it forces you to feel the need to engage when sometimes it isn’t worth it.

Other than that, it isn’t bad.

                                                                              • Anonymous

You know what I think would have been a good way to have both worlds? Make this a Chargeable spell but keep the fast apply time after actions. Charging it would increase the duration but obviously, it's gonna take a bit. And then when you can/want to be aggressive, go for the quick application and do as much as you can in the short time.

                                                                                • Anonymous

Really helpful if you wanna smack fire giant's phase 2 not hitting the arms. Its amazing how my knife could do so much in so little time

                                                                                  • Anonymous

If it’s supposed to be a Drawstring equivalent of a Spell Buff then at least make it stronger than the other Spell buffs. Constantly rebuffing, the FP cost, the fact that in buffing you miss times to actually attack. It needs at the very least be 10-12 seconds to be useful mid fight and it would make sacrificing a Ring slot for Old Lord’s actually worth it.

As it stands, you need Old Lord’s to make it functional but even then, since for whatever reason Godslayer Seal doesn’t enhance this Spell, you are still hitting lower than any of the other Spell buffs. Yes, the DoT on large health bars are its selling point but what about literally everything else?

Hones Just give it a duration buff that’s all it needs. Or. You know. Just give us Catch Black Flame and make Black Flame Blade completely obsolete.

                                                                                    • Anonymous

Okay, so hear me out (but also TL:DR at the bottom):

First off, the blackflame debuff IS refreshed every time you apply it to an enemy (this can be easily confirmed by hitting any enemy, waiting a moment, and then hitting them again - the duration is extended to the full 2 seconds after each hit).

Now, with that in mind, this debuff is most effective when it's reapplied within two seconds of each application, thus keeping the blackflame debuff ticking on an enemy. Using this buff on a fast weapon makes this easier to achieve but isn't absolutely necessary. Every second that this debuff is active, you burn the enemy for 1% of their max health with unmitigable damage. I'll say that again because it's important, EACH SECOND THIS IS ACTIVE IT BURNS THE ENEMY FOR 1% OF THEIR MAX HEALTH WITH UNMITIGABLE DAMAGE.

So, assuming that you keep this ticking for its full duration you're looking at 7% of the enemy's max health burned per application, which is really good in the later NG+ cycles when enemies' health pools are obscenely large. That being said, the closer to the end of the buff's duration you hit the longer it's extended. If you managed to hit the enemy on the seventh (or so) second that the buff was active you'd refresh the debuff for an additional two seconds, thus dealing 9% of the enemy's max health total. This spell's starting to sound pretty good.

But, it can be even better. With the Old Lord's talisman (increases duration of buffs by +30%) we increase that 7 second duration to around 9 seconds, which means that if you're able to keep the buff active the entire duration AND manage to land a hit within the last few moments of the buff you're looking at a whopping 11% of the enemy's max health burned for 15 FP.

Now, how to do that consistently: Whenever you're looking to buff, treat the window like a light attack with a regular-sized weapon (think a straight sword or katana) - you're looking for a slightly heavier attack, but not necessarily one that puts the boss into a long recovery animation (you can also use the Radagon Icon talisman to make the timing easier). Apply this buff while doing any other action: sprinting, jumping, fastbuff, or - my personal favorite - rolling. Do NOT cast it standing normally, this takes significantly (maybe 50%?) more time to buff than chaining it with an action. After buffing, just aim to hit at least once every two seconds to maintain the buff - rolling light attacks are your friends here.

Also, take note that this buff IS applied to enemies hit by the weapon skill of your buffed weapon, but there's another post detailing that so read that one for more information!

What that post doesn't mention though is that this is applied to a pulley crossbow in the offhand, similar to bloodflame blade. The timing on this wastes a lot of the buff since you have to swap off the talisman that you used to cast it with but it gives you a safe alternative to applying this buff to bosses that may have tougher melee timings, longer times before you can counterattack, or will just flat murder you if you get too close. (Note that the pulley crossbow interaction doesn't carry over into any other offhanded armament that I've tested or heard of so it might get patched out. The ashes of war application should be intentional though.)

The faith scaling on this is practically pointless for a 7-second buff considering the mana cost, just use electrify armament instead. Since the faith scaling is worthless, this spell works best at 17 faith.

I haven't tried it in PvP but it doesn't really seem like it'd be that good - 11% over 11 seconds of constantly refreshing the debuff is super low, even against someone with the max health of around 3k that's only an additional 330 damage (plus the so-so fire damage but whatever.)

Also note that this does have a SHORT duration and so you need to constantly reapply it. This spell WILL eat through your FP bar pretty fast, but investing a few points into mind helps combat this. I mean, technically speaking you'll only need a max of 10 casts to kill ANYTHING that doesn't heal as long as you keep the blackflame debuff applied so...

This is probably my favorite spell in the game and once you get the hang of how it works it just feels amazing. I like to swap between this and bloodflame blade applied to a keen Nagakiba (Pulley Crossbow offhand :P ) based on if the enemy can be bled or not and the amount of percentage-based damage you do is ridiculous.

TL:DR - Burns about 9% of your enemy's max HP per cast (11% with Old Lord's talisman) if you keep it active for the full duration. Fastbuff using rolls or certain ashes of war, don't cast it standing. If you don't want to get close to the enemy you can use pulley crossbow with this like you would bloodflame blade. Use it in PvE but not PvP. Best at 17 faith.

Hope this helps people understand the spell a bit more!

I'm using misericorde with sacred blade enchantment on it, I checked the wiki and misericorde doesn't say that it can't be enchanted (it's standard smithing stones which is usually fine). Is there some interaction specifically with holy affinity weapons?

                                                                                        • Anonymous

It's not even that bad, with the godslayer seal and appropriate talismans it adds a very significant amount of damage, works on nearly every foe, the percentage-based effect is really good if you use it against bosses, pairs very well with fast weapons despite not stacking, the duration is not too short to deal more damage with it than several casts of black flame, especially if you use a shortsword or something like that, can be paired with old lord's talisman for extra efficiency, but there is one thing about it that makes it inferior to other weapon buffs in the long run. To me, it's not even its duration, after using it for some time you get used to the way it is applied, and, spoiler, it is fast, especially after dodging or attacking, which creates a very fun and dynamic rythm, especially if you are fighting agressive bosses. Right now I am fighting Malenia, and though I am very far from being actually good at the game, I can tell that using this incant even against such bosses is very much possible. So, the main reason I just can't recommend using it in its current state, unless you are, like me, completely mesmerized by the beauty of the black flame effect and enjoy the way applying this feels, because this incantation right now is just inferior to other weapon enchantments is the... FP cost. Yeah, 15 is kind of too much for what it does and really too much for how often you will reapply this if you want to use this as your primary source of damage. I, while definitely not a game developer, would suggest decreasing the FP cost to 10 or even 8 to make this thing more viable as an incantation to use constantly, a reliable working horse against bosses and large enemies. And yes, I do intend to still use it against Malenia instead of things like electrify (which sounds good considering the fact that she stands in a puddle half the time), because I am a pervert and proud of it. Thanks for reading this unreasonably long rant about an objectively mediocre spell and take care.

                                                                                              • Anonymous

Personally, I usually go with Bloodflame Blade or Electrify Armament instead of this one. Blackflame in general is pretty cool, but I'd rather have an incantation that lasts longer or just use a weapon grease as opposed to this one personally.

                                                                                                • Anonymous

Good luck using the 6 second duration when every boss has a 7 hit combo preventing you from attacking for 10 seconds at a time.
Just use bloodflame blade instead. Lasts 60 seconds, adds fire damage, and stacks bleed to boot.
Blackflame blade is horrible and needs a significant duration buff to be halfway enjoyable to use. Reapplying this every other swing is such an annoying break from cadence that I completely shelved the incant. You can get the % max hp dmg from the blackflame already plus it’s ranged.
Horrible incant 0/10 would never use.
It’s a shame because imo it’s the coolest looking weapon enchant spell.

Most of the time you are just missing an attack/heal window by applying this buff, which is normally fine, except you might not even get to hit them once before it ends.

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

Needs buffs asap, like this it's useless in literally everything.

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

This means you get a quicker application after doing an attack or rolling. You can also do it while running for a fast application.

Really drains your mana but on a Black Flame build it absolutely does a ton of added damage.

                                                                                                          • Anonymous

this spell could definitely use a duration buff, but it's still insanely good for one main reason: % based damage. I've been letting people summon me for the final boss and against such a tanky enemy (especially with the extra health from co op partners) it rocks. doing 2.5k damage with a couple r1s is pretty damn good and fun, great damage for little commitment. I reckon this will be a godsend for late newgame+ runs due to how much health the bosses get, allowing you to do great damage without needing to go hypermode. personally recommend using the estoc to apply the effect as it's fast, has good range, counter damage and you're not locked in your attack animation for too long

                                                                                                            • Anonymous

From my experience with it it's honestly kind of amazing. Highly underrated imo. It works differently from different weapon buffs which is fun, deals a good amount of damage, close to instant cast speed, and 6 seconds lasts a lot longer than it sounds like. It costs a bit much, but I'd still highly recommend it. Use it after dodging attacks that leave the opponent open and the extra damage becomes visible real quick.

                                                                                                              • Anonymous

It's a nice "feint" in PVP I guess; run up and let them think you're gonna attack, apply, then maybe roll catch?

                                                                                                                • Anonymous

I like the idea of needing to constantly reapply. But the way it is right now it's horrible. If the duration is just 6 seconds, the cast time should be faster, with the possibility to cast while running, after a roll, combo into an fast/strong attack, etc.
In PvP it's useless. In PvE, with the way bosses have 6 hit combos and infinite stamina you're just wasting a chance to attack, to cast this skill and not attack at all because you need to dodge soon after.

                                                                                                                  • Anonymous

I really wanted to like this spell, but from what I've experienced using this incantation in a Black Flame build, this spell is mostly situational and mostly unimpressive.
It constantly eats up FP to simply activate it whenever you go in for an attack, and that's if you know you're going to land a few hits or if you're going to riposte/backstab. It's a flashy incantation meant for the player to play around it, instead of it being a useful buff for the player.

The duration seriously needs a buff and you should be allowed to instantaneously cast during a chain attack as to not interrupt.

                                                                                                                    • Anonymous

I think this could easily use a boost to 15 seconds in addition to strengthening the damage over time effect by just a little bit, not too much.
Also add a debuffing effect to it. Make it even more unique because it lasts such a short amount of time. What if the black flame reduced the target's poise by 50%? Or reduced their defenses

                                                                                                                      • Anonymous

This spell is not good, but it is much better than people think. With a weapon like a dagger it is easy to dodge, buff, and apply the DoT several times before it wears off, which will do a fixed % of boss health regardless of your stats. This is a solid way to kill endgame bosses on low RL characters -- notably the final boss, which is immune to bleed.

                                                                                                                        • Anonymous

At least it is kind of good against fire giant... i guess? Although the existence of literally any other black flame incantantion kind of makes this less of a big deal. Also, no buffs today? (insert sad Megamind) Like, really, buffing default and scouring black flame and just forgetting about this poor thing? Well, at least now I can (presumably) cancel the queen's black flame mid-animation, looking forward to try it, onyx blade 3.0 seems to become even more appealing

                                                                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                                                                            • Anonymous

Bloodflame Blade lasts 10 times as long and only costs 5 extra FP, Electrify lasts 15 times longer and costs 12 more. And black flame damage doesn't stack like bloodflame. Not sure what this spell's meant to accomplish besides look cool.

                                                                                                                              • Anonymous

Do most of you people here not bother playing around with these tools for more than one cast? Or read their descriptions? The cast time on this is lightning quick, and even faster if you do it after a roll or while jumping. You're supposed to be using this often, because the blackflame effect is just that good

                                                                                                                                • Anonymous

From the time that you press L1/LB to the flame being extinguished, it is 8.3 seconds. With the Old Lord's Talisman, it is 10.3 seconds. Remember, that's including the casting time. That's a whole nother hit, maybe 2 if you're lucky or got the stamina. Might be worth equipping/unequipping that talisman during a boss fight.

                                                                                                                                  • They forgot half of the weapons in this game are slow as hell and with the little windows some bosses are giving the 1s animation of BFB is way too long.

                                                                                                                                    • Anonymous

I think a compromise for a increased duration of this incantation would be to make it increase the weight of the weapon as in the description it states “ Black flame is weighty”. I got this idea from Vyke’s dragonbolt incantation which has a status for reduced equip load

                                                                                                                                      • Anonymous

I absolutely love the effect on weapons, the animation of apply it, the dot, but it's not worth using due to it's FP cost and tiny duration vs other uses of my FP

                                                                                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                                                                                          1. Both can be extended by Old Lord's Talisman enchants time.
                                                                                                                                          2. Both can be increased by Fire Scorpion Charm to increase flame damage.
                                                                                                                                          3. Only it can be Sacred Scorpion Charm increase flame damage, and gain greater than Fire Scorpion Charm, two talismans can be stacked.

                                                                                                                                          • Anonymous

I can see why its a short duration, but I feel like its too short because there isnt a single weapon that can make good use of it without something like repeating thrust or maybe sword dance. The ticking damage scales wonderfully with the enemies hp pool but again, most ashes of war/weapons just aren't fast enough, not to mention it has a similar cost to just casting any other godslayer incantations or just using black flame tornado which does the exact same amount of damage over time but with way more stacks. 10 seconds would make this beautiful because then you could get out a combo or two, and a few more ashes of war would work with it, like double slash or charge forth.

                                                                                                                                            • Anonymous

This is the spell that put me over the edge in being able to beat Elden Beast. I usually dual wield twinspears, but this time I just kept my seal in hand and kept using this whenever I had the opportunity to attack. It increased damage quite a bit, and leaves a DOT.

Paired it with Lord's Divine Fortification and holy prot talisman, but I'm not sure how much that helped. Casted it twice to keep it up the whole fight.

                                                                                                                                              • Anonymous

wow i dont know who in their right minds thought this would be balanced. it costs too much fp, lasts waaaaay too short for its cast animation. i get what they trying to do with this, a spell buff equivalent of a drawstring buff, meaning faster and does more damage, but lasts only a short while. but compared to drawstrings, this takes longer to apply, lasts 4 seconds shorter, costs fp, and the incant scaling is WORSE than that of other buffs? LIKE WHAT? excuse me?

also just a side thought, i dont know why we dont have just a normal fire weapon buff. we have a normal magic weapon, 2 lightning weapon buffs, poison, holy, frost, even a f*cking blood and fire combo, but no normal just fire? and to boot, why did they remove dark damage from the series? it would fit perfectly, there is death/dark incantations and spells in this game but they do a mix of holy, magic, or frost or whatever like wtf. this game kind of feels incomplete when you really think about it.
im hoping to god this game gets a lot of post launch support and good DLC then...

One of the incantations of the 'Black Flame' series. Lore wise, it has something to do with the Rune of Death that Maliketh has, and its power is meant to be used to slay gods; reflective of this, Black Flame deals percentage damage, treating bosses and trash mobs equally, similar to what Maliketh's Black Blade is capable of inflicting on its weapon skill. Unlike Bleed or Frostbite's percentage-based damage, it has no resistances associated with it, and it does not become harder to re-proc after a successful use. Basically, it's a PvE spell specifically tuned for boss slaying; its low duration but ability to be cast during attacks means you're often using it between two swings on a boss, making sure black flame is on the second swing to apply the debuff.

                                                                                                                                                  • Anonymous

This has a very niche use case when it comes to a lot of builds unless you focus on it. It does more damage than bloodflame blade, especially against things that can't be hemorrhaged, and it doesn't require multihit attacks to build up the effect. This thing's special effect is why you use it, like blood loss it deals extra damage on higher health enemies, I am unsure if this is affected by fire damage buffs but considering a lot of the game being wonky it could be either way. However it only lasts 6 seconds, use it with flame grant me strength and/or a fire build to grain more use out of it, because this lets you melt bosses if using a medium weapon like a GS, katana, or CGS. This weapon does not favor small fast hitting weapons because of the way god slayer flame works, through multiple tests on different enemies it only lasts a little after the last hit not a collective of all hits.
Also something interesting, because of the way the health drain loss after each hit works using this right before a critical does great for a two hit critical because the delay is often enough two let the whole god flame trigger to go through. Cast it right before hitting a critical, after rolling and running casts are the fastest so perfect for doing exactly this on most enemies.

                                                                                                                                                    • Anonymous

Is the buff duration bugged or is it really 6 second intended ? Would this work with Old Lord's Talisman to bring the buff to 9 seconds ? It feels shorter than 6 seconds to me for some reason (unless the animation startup where you coat your blade with fire IS part of the 6 second)

It looks really cool and overall really fast to cast but I don't know... Is the %HP dot really worth the lack of consistency ? I wouldn't mind if it was a spell version of the flamestrike Ash of war with blackflame. But with it I can coat my blade with fire and deal massive damage for a decent FP cost and the buff lasts a long time...
