Black Knife Armor is a Chest Armor in Elden Ring. Black Knife Armor is part of the Black Knife Set, and is heavyweight armor used by assassins due to its stealth-enhancing materials. Black Knife Armor is an armor piece worn over or around the player's torso to obtain an increase of defense and resistance. It also changes the appearance as well when it is equipped. Some armor pieces may be available to both genders but may be slightly different for male and female characters.
Scale armor used by the Black Knife Assassins, forged to make no sound.
Traces of power yet remain in its concealing veil, which muffles the sound of footsteps.
The assassins that carried out the deeds of the Night of the Black Knives were all women, and rumored to be Numen who had close ties with Marika herself.

Just started NG+. This chest piece stops the two skeletons at the Church of Vows graveyard (glaive one and other one) from emerging. Doesn’t seem to work on other skeletons, but I haven’t checked all the churches/graveyards.

little update on the effect, if someone could please edit the Notes & Tips: You will also stop leaving footprints behind in snow. nothing major, but for completions sake, I think it add-worthy. Thanks in advance and cheers.

ive encountered something interesting while wearing this and using the mimic veil...
the character does not stay "hidden" when you move around

The altered version muffles sound just fine, at least since 1.06. Not sure why this page is lying. I've been sprinting up to enemies and backstabbing them all day with the altered version equipped. I can sprint in circles behind the resting guard outside Groveside Cave and he's none the wiser unless I take off the armor.

Deepest Lore: The item description is one heck of a lore drop, for sure. The Black Knife Armor set is implying a rather shocking theory: The Marika herself was involved in the plot of the Night of Black Knives itself! Think about it: How would Ranni have been able to locate Maliketh in the first place? We find him high in the sky in Crumbling Farum Azula. The one person who would know the exact location of him would be Marika herself, for Maliketh was her shadowbound beast, after all. We learn that Marika had grown opposed to the Golden Order in time, so she wished to weaken it by orchestrating the death of one of its leaders: Her own son, Godwyn the Golden. Marika being complicit would also explain how the Black Knife Assassins managed to infiltrate the Capital so easily, as she would know the ins-and-outs of the city. Now, you might think why would Marika allow her own children be killed? Uh, it's literally said in-game that Marika wished for her demigod children to wage war against each other. Does that sound like what a loving mother would say to her children? Marika was ambitious, and if she wanted something done, she would do anything to achieve it, be it the death of her own children or shattering the Elden Ring, the law of the world, itself.
Can anyone confirm if it’s still bugged? Armour+talisman don’t work together? I’d better try out this armour altered with both talismans for sounds and invisibility…I should try with another player to see how it works out.

The muffle is soooo good, for example it does not wake basilisks in rot lake making the walk through piece of cake, and also can give many opportunities for backstab. Not mentioning the look of the armor, it just rules for me.

"Rumored" does not equal fact that so many people are taking stock in.

Yes... this item now crashes your game when equipping it. First it was nobles trousers... then black knife armor. WHAT NEXT!?

To anyone wanting to use the muffling effect in PvP along with some sort of invisibility: DON'T!
Any permanent muffle (Crepus's Vial, Unaltered Black Knife Armor) when combined with invisibility (Concealing Veil, Assassin's Gambit, Mimic Veil, Unseen Form) will cause a visual bug that nullifies the latter. This doesn't effect PvE because the invisibility buff is still applied, but in PvP it renders these combos unusable. If you've ever tried them together and wondered "How can they still see me?!" then now you know.
Hope it gets fixed sooner rather than later.

Try wearing the bloodsoaked mask with this armor and compare it to other headgear... it shows a hood around your head. pretty cool and interesting

Don't know if anyone else is having this issue so I'm gonna leave a comment anyway just in case. As of 1.04 (at least for me as I am unable to find confirmation or denial of others having this issue as of yet) the chest is bugged causing immediate CTD and character corruption upon equip. I was able to replicate this on multiple characters thanks to back-ups.

Since the last patch, equipping this armor freezes my game, be aware!

Between the muffle effect of the armor allowing you not to need to Crepus' Vial talisman and the aesthetically pleasing transparent cloak this armor has, this is probably a personal favourite piece/set that I've been using for my bow/knife build. I know lots of people here in the comments don't like it (or it's negated purpose when the cloak is removed), but there's something so pleasing about the transparency that makes it almost reaper-esque with the reaper scythe weapon, or how it shimmers even when not moving, "As if it's hiding your characters breathing". To each their own, I suppose, but I personally love this more than anything else.

I think only the unaltered version muffles footsteps. Altered it and the description changed and I could hear my footsteps again.

I do really wish that the cloak was black rather than this stupid transparent affair. It sucks because the blue coloration of the armor really doesn't go well with any of the full face helmets, and I found out that if you alter it to remove the cloak your footsteps can be heard again, completely defeating the point of the armor...

i am maddened by the transparent cloak. i really wish there was another variant

Wearing this armor piece and using mimics veil ends up making your character overlap with whatever object you become, and it shows you moving at a walking animation..
On a side note, the transparent hood goes over the fingerprint helmet (Vyke) which feels like it might imply something other than 'oh yeah, it just suits them'

Currently bugged with assassins gambit, and concealing veil talisman (and potentially other sources of invis, didn’t test).
Did a duel with a friend to test and assassins gambit appeared to do nothing on his end (despite showing the effect and buff symbol on my side) until I removed the chest upon which I immediately turned invisible for him.
This interaction might also apply to the vial talisman that silences footsteps but I didn’t get a chance to test.

funny fact: if you change the appearance of the armor with a needle, the cape will disappear and the footstep sounds will return. apparently the presence of a transparent cape gives the ability to move quietly.

You cant Cast Unseen Self with this armor on. or it might take effect but it doesnt show visual ill have to test it more

Mimic's veil and the chest have a bug where you can see your character while transformed

After looking into the effects on the armor set, it seems only the Black Knife Armor without altered has any actual effect muffling any sound. The rest of the Black Knife Armor set doesn't have anything to do with sound.
DONT WEAR THIS SET! Because after you take it off hearing your footsteps and heavy armor rolls is jarring. Being able to full on SPRINT up to enemies and backstab them will get very addicting and you'll never want to go back.

While wearing this armor you make no sound while moving, jumping and rolling.

The armor silences the wearers footsteps. The roll also seems smoother but it might be because it's just quieter.
The girlies didn't need to make their *stealth* suits look THIS good, but they did that. When they give you the London treatment, at least you can't say that you were eviscerated by someone with no drip
