Black Knife Assassins are Bosses in Elden Ring. This Elden Ring Black Knife Assassin Guide features boss locations, tips, strategies and videos on how to defeat the Black Knife Assassins easily, as well as boss stats and lore for the Black Knife Assassins.

The Black Knife Assassins are relentless and agile dark figures that become more fearsome and deadly the deeper you venture into The Lands Between. They were responsible for the event known as the Night of the Black Knives, where they assassinated Godwyn the Golden with daggers imbued with a fragment of the Rune of Death stolen from Maliketh, the Black Blade. These assassins are a group of women who are said to be Numen with close connections to Queen Marika.

These are optional bosses as players don't have to defeat them to advance in Elden Ring. Despite being quick and hard hitters, the Black Knife Assassins are easily staggered and having Spirit Ashes to distract them can help significantly. The variant in the Sage's Cave is invisible, though there are multiple methods available to pinpoint her location during the fight, the easiest of which is using the Sentry's Torch. Black Knife Assassins drop the Assassin's Crimson Dagger, Assassin's Cerulean Dagger, Black Knifeprint, Concealing Veil, or Black Knife depending on which assassin was defeated.

Bosses are unique and challenging Enemies that can be encountered all over the Lands Between. They can drop unique Spirit AshesWeaponsSpells, and other various Items.

Lesser Black Knife Assassin is the normal enemy form of this boss. Alecto, Black Knife Ringleader is another variant of this boss.

The spirit of a Black Knife Assassin can be summoned for aid in battle by using the Black Knife Tiche Spirit Ashes.

The assassins that carried out the deeds of the Night of the Black Knives were all women, and rumored to be Numen who had close ties with Marika herself.

Negations (or Absorptions)

The negation numbers are the % of your damage that gets blocked. For example, if a negation is 60, 40% of that damage by that type will go through and 60% will be negated. Bigger number = less damage. A negation of 100 means no damage goes through, and a negation of -100 mean the enemy takes 2x damage from that source. 0 means damage goes pretty much as is.

Black Knife Assassin Fight Strategy

The Best Tips for Black Knife Assassin:

MELEE USERS

The Assassin can be easily staggered, and the Lone Wolves Ashes can distract her, deal a lot of damage, and leave openings to land some free hits. Otherwise, use a fast weapon to keep her staggered so she can't attack you back. They also have rather low health, so it's often worthwhile to trade damage and just plan to outlast her.

The safest way to attack her is to wait for her Helmsplitter and use her recovery time to set up a backstab. You can also try parrying her, but it's not recommended as her attacks are fast and hard to predict and she tends to move around a lot.

MAGIC AND RANGED USERS

Intelligence: Keep your distance and use ranged attacks. You can use Spirit Ashes to distracted her, or just roll and run away to keep distance between you. Carian Slicer is a fast melee spell that deals high damage for its cost, and can be cast repeatedly to possibly stunlock the boss. Magic Glintblade (Prisoner) can be used over Pebble to counter her ability to dodge projectiles.

Faith: Same strategy as stated above. Catch Flame can be used the same as way as Carian Slicer, as it deals rather high damage for its speed. Flame Sling could be useful, but her tendency to dodge could make the spell less useful.

Black Knife Assassin Attacks & Counters

Attack Description Counter
Quick Slash parry icon 40pxSlashes her dagger in various directions, often twirling around as well Blocking can cause her to ricochet and break her out of her combo. Otherwise, dodge away and wait out the rest of the combo. This attacks is also parriable at the point when her dagger is raised above her shoulder.
Lunging Stab parry icon 40pxStabs her dagger straight ahead, either overhand or underhand Blocking can cause her to ricochet and break her out of her combo. Otherwise, dodge away and wait out the rest of the combo.
Feint Attack parry icon 40pxLeaps forward with one fake counterclockwise slash followed by the real clockwise slash The first slash isn't real and can't hurt you (but also can't be parried). Wait until after it's done to dodge away or you'll get caught be the real slash.  Alternatively, parry after the initial slash and as her body twists and her blade comes near to ground to her left.
Spinning Retreat parry icon 40pxSpins clockwise followed by a clockwise slash, then jumps to her left Roll to your left to get distance from her and allow her to finish her combo
Blade-Dragging Sweep parry icon 40pxPlunges her knife into the ground and pivots around it, followed by a clockwise slash Run a short distance away when you see her dagger enter the ground, then land a hit/backstab once the attack is finished.  Alternatively, parry her towards the end of the animation as the blade comes to the ground on her left and the final set of sparkes fly.
Helmsplitter Jumps in the air before slamming her dagger into the ground Roll as she starts her descent. Take advantage of the long recovery time to get in a few hits or line up a backstab.
Lunging Grab Lifts her left hand above her shoulder then lunges forward. If it hits, she stabs the player in the back for massive damage Either roll towards her raised arm or stagger her as soon as you notice her lifting her hand. If you dodge successfully, this is a great opportunity to get in an attack
Decoy Lunge parry icon 40pxLunges low to her right and raising her dagger high above her shoulder, sweeps the dagger across to her left before performing a back-handed slash from low on the ground, sending sparkes flying. Run away, or parry her when her dagger is to her left, just before she drags it on the ground with sparks flying.
Slashing Blade of Death spell parry icon 40pxCharges her dagger with red flame and fire a horizontal arc of flame at you. If it hits, continuously drains your health for a time. Usually used when the player is some distance away. Roll into the projectile as it approaches, or roll to either side.  Alternative, use a shield with the Carian Retalian Ash of War equipped to parry the projectile for some extra damage.
Jumping Blade of Death Charges her dagger with red flame, leaps into the air then unleashes a series of Death-imbued slashes at you. If it hits, it is likely to one-shot you.  It will also continuously drains your health for a time. Usually used when the player is some distance away. Run away from her as far as possible, then dodge at the last moment in case you are caught on the edge of the Blades of Death.  The hit box of this attack extends some distance forward as well as behind her.

Additional Fight Strategy

This assassin is invisible, but can be revealed by carrying Sentry's Torch. Summoned spirits are also unaffected by her invisibility and can be used to poinpoint her location, as can the flames left on the ground by Bear Witness!.

If you don't have access to the strategies above, she can still be defeated by looking for the dust clouds and water deformations she leaves behind as she moves around. When she charges you (again look for the dust clouds/water deformations), always stand your ground and time your attacks to land just before she reaches you. She will either be hit by your initial attacks or she will dodge by jumping backwards before immediately charging directly at you again, in which case simply attack again. She almost never retreats from this second charge so as long as you time your attacks correctly, damage is all but guaranteed. Each time she is hit, she will almost always retreat before charging at you again after a brief period of time. She will sometimes aggro on you continuously, it is best to avoid these by dodging away as much as possible until she loses aggro and charges you again.

Did you know that the black knife assassins in patch 1.00 had 3 diffrent grab attacks? Where the 1st one is the one we know now.
2nd one is a "they go closer to the player and do a delayed short range grab. " And the 3rd which only happens if you turn your back on them while they are running after you, the moment they made contact with you they would instantly grab you without any animation.

So fun fact they are telekinetic. Had no idea til i went to fight ringleader. I have video evidence of Alecto PULLING me forward INTO the grab from like 6 feet away. They did the grab animation, I advoided it, the hand was NOT touching me, then next thing i know my dude literally got yoinked forward like 6 feet just enough for the hand to touch me and i get one shotted. I have the video evidence, one frame im out of range, next frame being touched by hand. bullshit...

Firstly, they are the best minibosses by far. Secondly, since their bodies are invisible wouldnt it be more effective if the ones not completely invisible wouldnt wear equipment to be invisible and use their hands to break your neck or something like that.

What is the lore behind their immunity to bleed, poison, and rot? Are they all like ethereal or something? I know they are all numen women but that clearly isn't the reason why they are immune to these status effects, otherwise choosing the "Numen" preset at character creation screen would make the player immune to them too.

Mimic tear and Blasphemous blade shreds these people at RL 80 with minimal investment in strength/dex and a good 30 faith while spamming Taker’s Flames and Jumping R2s. Great swords make these fights way too easy.

So what's the explanation for why these guys are immune to all status effects? Just "**** you" to the player?

****ing that invisible one in Altus Sage's Cave is the worst lol, poor Godwyn, can't imagine 6 of those *****es jumping you while invisible.

Took me literally 2k hours and playing randomizer mod to see Jumping Blade of Death attack for the first time (for reference, it's the same as skill on the dagger when you wield it), and that's only because I was riding Torrent while trying to slip past Alecto. All assassins (not only the one in Altus) are guaranteed to use it when you're on horseback. It deals insane poise damage and so will 100% knock you off the horse, then followed by a critical hit while you're still laying on the ground, which is KO. Also I absolutely disagree with all people here grumbling that they're bs, actually one of the most enjoyable bosses/enemies to fight, they have no poise, can be parried, you can just space (dodge by walking backwards) all their combo wombos and backstab punish a lot of moves. If you do nothing but L2 spam and enemy can avoid it, then it might be a lil problematic, yeah.

So the only status effect they can receive is frost? I ignored the ones in the town but I might try this now.

Am I the only one that thinks the assassins have the same vibe as Dancer of the Boreal Valley? The clothes, the agility, the mysteriousness. Alecto is one of the best Evergaol fights in the game. I literally let myself die if she got to really low health so I could fight her again.

I wish they were better. They're so cool. They need to be much much much stronger. More health and attack damage. Maybe even more speed. These are the girls responsible for killing the first Demigod.

Sad that we have to kill these good girls. They should be on must protect list along with the Deathbed Companions and Finger Maidens.

The Black Knife assassins are invisible or completely hollow. They're a group of women who are said to be Numens, a group of people who said to have come from outside the Lands Between.
DS2's Forlon "lost both their corporeal form and a world to call their own. Now they drift into other worlds". In the Japanese, they're described as children of original sin, not necessarily the allusion of being Aldia's experiments.

I used greatshield soldiers ashes on the one guarding Sainted Hero's grave, poor thing got trapped in a greatshield circle and couldn't even roll out of it. Felt like sweet revenge for all the times I've died to getting stuck on geometry

Can someone tell me why the black knife assassins (that have btw a rest animation) are immune to sleep?

I mean i get that they are assassins known for killing people in their sleep and all. But seeing them basically sleep before my verry eyes untale i come a bit to close to them. And them now awakw are immune to it is kinda weard.

And to be honest as a black knife assassin simp, who would rather not fighting them, (but if fought they are the best enemies in the game to fight to be clear) why is that not an option?

If anyone know please tell. I'm quite curious if anyone knows anything about that.

Apparently redditors say that the black knife assassins are one of the most bs enemies in the game to fight. I think they need the good old gid gud. I love to fight these enemies, and tiche is my main summon becease i love them that mutch, and wanted an black knife on my side.

Hooded face, therefore assumed male. Never mind their long legs, slender figures and elegant movements. Seriously, how do so many people mistake these girls for dudes? They don't look remotely masculine.

                                                  • Anonymous

i have zero problem with this guy as an invisble boss its fun and you can see his movement through the water, but when they start becoming normal enemies is when i start losing my paitence.

                                                    • Anonymous

The flame of frenzy melts the invisible guys. They get staggered like crazy and poise break after two succesful hits. Plus its aoe is huge so it makes it easier to hit em.

                                                      • One of the most enjoyable enemies to see move, when you're able to. Such beauty and grace juxtaposed with their viciousness and fashion sense. Now if only my husband wouldn't try to ape them with dual greatswords while I'm slinging spells in-between Helice thrusts during co-op; let the girls dance!

                                                        • Anonymous

Just found out a way to cheese these pretty easily: use Gelmir's fury. Just make sure they're engaging in melee and running towards you and blast the spell and they'll die in a cast or two. And the cheese part is that they're stunlocked because of the lava and the hits and they can't really do anything but take it, and as far as I can tell, their fire resistance isn't anything too special.

                                                          • Anonymous

Favorite mini bosses in the game. No bs animation reading, no inconsistent super or hyper armor while fighting them, you can parry them, hit stun them/stunlocking them quite nicely, they give way more attack windows compare to some bosses in the game, they often (not always) don't chain their combos together, and their black knife mele hit damage isn't ridiculously high to the point they could 2 shot you if they hit you with a combo. (Which i wish some bosses also din't do in battle, Don't care if that makes them lore accurate. That in combat isn't fun for me. I like a fair difficult challenge in battle. Not a no hit run boss mechanic design.)

And don't forget about tiche! I love thiche alot. and wanted a black knife assassin on my side after fighting my 1 ever assassin encounter.

These ladies remind me so mutch of the bloodborne dance i had with lady maria. Reacting to eachothers moves, while also playing by the rules of giving fair counter windows in the fight.

To bad they don't respawn though would like to train against one once in a while. For that great dance battle.

However the invisible lesser black knives they kicked my ass hard. Becease i refused to get a torch just to remove what makes them speciale/questionably bs. I would like to see their attacks a bit better. (Like seeing their foot steps a bit better to know where they are. And maybe having a mechanic to know which attacks the are performing with needing the torch for it.) so that that grab attack they use doesn't kill me so mutch.

But overall 9/10 enemy for me. Hope the dlc has them somewhere too, or does somthing intresting with them. Would live to see that :)

Lone wolves are so good against all of these if the summoning is available. They just constantly stun lock and are super aggressive and catch them out when they try and back step dodge. They can't be grabbed and stabbed like your mimic tear either.

                                                              • Anonymous

For the invisible one - skeletons summon help a lot if you don't have access to any tools that reveal him. Since the boss doesn't have AOE attack, he rarely kills them during revive animation. Look at where skeletons are facing, stand behind them and attack as soon as assassin becomes visible during his attack animation on skeletons. If both of skeletons die, keep running in circles until they revive - ez fight

                                                                • Anonymous

Alecto destroyed me a dozen times before I used Carian Piercer. Knocked her down every hit. Died several times to the assassins in Ordina until I remembered what I did in Alecto's fight.

                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                    • Anonymous

Carian Greatsword makes this boss a joke. The magic glintblade suggestion in the article is terrible advice. The black knife assassin is constantly dodge rolling so very very few hits actually land. The Carian Greatsword spell, on the other hand, can basically keep the boss unable to attack and even stagger for a critical. The loop is basically cast carian greatsword, black knife assassin gets hit, then rolls. By the time they stand up, your next cast of carian greatsword will be landing. Repeat.

                                                                      • Anonymous

It, aside from the regularly well-timed roll dodge is the only weapon type that offers such mobility, dodge efficiency and counter-attack speed.
I love fighting these bosses (or enemy type) specifically for that reason, the fight feels so fulfilling with claw weapons lmao
It's almost like they were designed to be fought with them, every other boss is "run in with colossal sword and R1 spam"

                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                            • Anonymous

Bait her in and send the elevator down. She doesnt seem to be able to fall in the hole, so you can just hide on the other side of the hole and shoot stuff at her.

                                                                              • Anonymous

                                                                                • Anonymous

If the game had a quick aggressive combate like Bloodborne or Sekiro it would make sense but Elden Ring combat is almost the same as DS3... it just doesn't feel right (I'm not saying fast bosses are impossible but...).

                                                                                  • Anonymous

You cannot access the sainted hero's grave site of grace until you kill the black knife assassin.

                                                                                    • Just used Cold Sheild of the Guilty +5 with Shield Bash Ashes and beat the tar out of the Black Knife Catacombs Assassin using that and my Winged Scythe. Used 1 HP and 1 FP flask.

                                                                                      • Anonymous

So.. I just had one of the assassins at the Liturgical Town grab me within 1 second of jumping up to the roof I was on despite me hitting it within that time frame, after 5 seconds I'm able to finally stand up, and she immediately grabs me again during my roll away (1,600+ damage in full crucible). I'm considering uninstalling until they rebalance this game, I was never this disappointed during DS2, as sloppy as that game was. There's really no excuse.

                                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                                          • Anonymous

Totally doesn't make this boss even more annoying.

                                                                                              • Anonymous

Even her can be outsmarted...heck the one waiting at the entrance of sainted hero drops a sonewhat very effective weapon to fight Alecto with. And those 100% cloaking ones can be easily countered with sentry torch makong the fight somewhat trivial and micro-boss-ish like.

Rapiers are so cheap on stamina, fast and long range that assassins start to look like old ladies. The only attacks they have that have any chance of touching you are the jumping attack and the flame attack. Rapiers are so cheap on stamina, fast and long range that assassins start to look like old ladies. The only attacks they have that have any chance of touching you are the jumping attack and the flame attack. But once she’s on land with me then she can dash around and I don’t know where she is

It does a huge aoe that leaves fire on the ground for a time. Not only will it knock this guy on his ass and let you pound him, but if you miss, the flames it leaves on the ground will stagger the guy if he walks into them, and make him visible momentarily.

Their grab has way more range than the visual. You can be 3-4 feet out of the end of their grabs range and once they whiff it they snap teleporting to you regardless. Seriously obnoxious.
