Bloodflame Blade Guide

  • Blood Incantation
  • Buffs weapon with Fire attack power.
  • Stamina Cost: 10
  • Duration: 60 seconds
  • Fire damage: 0.40 * Faith based Incantation scaling.
  • While Bloodflame Blade can grant the Hemorrhage status effect to any weapon it is applied to, it is most effective on (buffable) weapons that already have the effect, such as the Uchigatana.
  • Afflicts the target with a bloodflame debuff effect that stacks a total of 40 bleed over the course of 2 seconds after striking an enemy.
  • The bloodflame debuff can stack by striking an enemy repeatedly or applying the same debuff from other sources. Does not scale with Arcane even when wearing the Dragon Communion Seal.
  • As it is fire damage, it is buffed by the Fire Scorpion Charm and Flame-Shrouding Cracked Tear and will set the Hand and Giant Hand enemies on fire rendering them incapacitated while dealing tons of damage to them.
  • Although it can be used on a weapon that already has passive Hemorrhage effects (as noted above), it can't be used on weapons that have an innate or applied elemental infusion.
  • Can get the most out of Bleed procs with this spell by pairing it with Ashes of War such as Blood Tax or Stormcaller (skills that can hit a target(s) multiple times.

So BFB doesn't scale with Arcane? WHAT THE ****?

In other words, if you do a Dex/Arc or Str/Arc build, don't bother leaving weapons Heavy or Sharp in order to buff them with this.
Those weapons won't have Arcane scaling due to them not being Blood or Occult infused (so their bleed value won't improve compared to a build with no Arcane investment) and BFB's bleed won't scale with Arcane in any case.

Just use the Occult infusion if you want more AR and the Bleed infusion if you want more Bleed buildup.

Applying this on a Great Stars with Prelate Charge on a (mostly) Str build already works well. Any recommendations to increase damage output of every hit? Should it be Faith or Str (or mind for more fp = more hits?)

          • Anonymous

The fact that the debuff stacks on hit instead of just refreshing is insane - combine this with a fast-attacking weapon with innate bleed like Hook Claws or Uchigatana and 40 bleed/2 sec per hit on top of regular bleed adds up to insanely fast status build-up.

            • Anonymous

Incredibly effective on weapons with innate bleed, when applied to non-bleed weapons it's basically just a slightly better fire grease that costs FP

Bloodflame on star fists is a good time. Not for who your fighting, but you, you'll enjoy yourself... and that's what matters.

                  Debuff PSA:
Status decay values as of 1.10 patch
                  Bleed -7/s
                  Frost -5/s
                  Sleep -5/s
                  Poison and Rot -4/s
                  Madness -4/s
                  Death -3/s
As noted by other commenters, having this buff on your bleed weapon halts bleed decay and increases the bleed meter for 2s. This makes it easier to get your bleed proc in both PvE and PvP.

On heavier, slower hitting weapons, applying this seems better for overall damage than the occult affinity. For one, you'll have to spend some points meeting a weapon's strength and dexterity prerequisites no matter what. If those requirements are relatively high they'll detract from arcane, cutting into the weapon's damage and bleed buildup. But also, for the 2 seconds blood flame is increasing bleed on the target, its bleed buildup is not decaying. Normally the decay of status buildup begins immediately after flat status is applied to an enemy. This isn't much issue for fast weapons, but slower weapons with flat bleed will battle the decay between attacks. With BFB that is not a problem. I'd rather apply this buff with the heavy affinity than use the occult affinity with a weapon like great stars, getting higher AR and 95 bleed that spends less time decaying, rather than noticeably lower AR and only like +10-15 flat bleed. You'll spend less extra attribute points on the needed 10 arcane and 12 faith, and also gain access to other good low req incants like bestial vitality.

If you know how to establish pressure in PvP, this spell makes you a nearly unstoppable force. The only thing I've seen confidently beat me was an overlevelled hyperarmor blob bleed colossal greatsword... so that says enough to me. I have a setup that's too busted to list here but I can assure you there are some real gems with this incantation and its NOT the ripple crescent halberd, or even any of the innate bleed weapons.

Overhyped & underwhelming to say the least. Throw it on your nagakiba or raptor talons & have fun getting parried.

                        • Anonymous

Does 40 bleed damage increases as we increase the fire damage, like, with various buffs and more inc scaling seal? Or is it a stable build-up?

                          • Anonymous

                            Is this even dodge-able?
I'm 99% sure it's not, and bleed will hit you out of a roll every time. I've legitimately never seen this rolled before.
What? do you have to make it so you rolled it on your opponent's screen like a parry?

People who use this either know and lie about the bleed being roll-able when it's not, or don't know and think people just aren't good enough to roll the un-avoidable dmg.
If you can actually point me to some hard evidence that it can be rolled, then feel free to rip me apart in the replies (y'all are going to anyway).
I can't wait for all the bloodflame blade users to downvote this, I can see it now.

This is way stronger in PvP than regular bleed. In PvP you can fairly reliably force the bleed proc to occur during dodge iframes thereby negating its damage but good luck doing that with this. This is so so much more threatening simply because it builds up over time making it infinitely harder to dodge the proc. If you apply this to a fast hitting weapon especially one with innate bleed buildup it is crazy powerful. If this scaled with arcane it would be top of meta (aside from sleep ripple crescent halbert cause that’s just blatantly OP).

It's blatantly overpowered. They should either increase requirements (around 40 stat investment overall) or require around 60 arcane to get the bleed you have right now. Basically scale with srcane
Every build can use it as soon as they activate godrick rune. Which means every class can have similar bleed to what you get on endgame occult build. It's as if ds1 darkbead was available in firelink shrine but with 5 times more casts.
It's disgusting in both PvE and early pvp. My go to option for any early game boss

Has anyone tried this on Heavy Zwei? Like not for massive bleed damage but just as something extra to fit alnogside the physical damage? Just trying to think of more fun builds and not all the pointless and skill-less Youtube builds that the majority do since they have severe skill issues.

ITS A FIRE BUFF FROM A FIRE SCHOOL
WHY doesnt it work with fire weapons lmfao

This is my favorite buff in the game, along with Flame Grant Me Strength. Something about having your character and weapon both coated in blood-crimson fire invokes a primal satisfaction in me

                                      • This Incantation is a guilty pleasure, especially since I've been exploring ultra-meta setups like with the River's of Blood. The fact that debuff ACTUALLY STACKS is wild. While I often go for Stance-breaker builds more so than outright damage, the constant Hemorrhage applications on Bleed-weak enemies is simply nothing to scoff at.

My most recent - and most "clean" - Malenia clear involved the Nagakiba with Double Slash and the Bloodflame Blade. Hemorrhage just kept proccing off of her and she just MELTED.

Honestly I'm glad this doesn't scale with arcane. Arcane already has so many options like the ripple halberd to apply sleep or any other weapon with a bleed or poison infusion. You can already 2 hit proc bleed, poison, or sleep on an arcane build, no need to give it an unavoidable bleed buff as an option as well. Plus it makes this buff viable for more quality, keen, or strength focused builds that only have the min stats required to use this.

This spell is permanently glued to my Uchigatana. Can't get much more badass than a blood-red flaming japanese sword that lets you teleport (I use Bloodhound's Step AoW)

for all of you who dont know, the bleed bot never scales. Always 2 bleed every tick for 2 seconds for aa totaal of 40 bleed. Only the fire damage scales

                                              • Ah yes, let me hit you through your I-frames and proc bleed anyways. Just as toxic as sleep and madness in PvP due to how they all inherently take advantage of the **** netcode.

                                                • Anonymous

I really wish this game had a basic fire weapon buff incantation that scaled at 0.75 like electrify armament and order's blade.

                                                  • Anonymous

For all of you who're confused - The Faith requirement is what's required to utilize the incantation. "Scaling" damage is based on whatever seal you have equipped, and how that seal scales. For instance, if you're using the Dragon Communion Seal and it scales with Arcane, no matter the grade, then your incantations will scale accordingly. I hope that helps the confusion. Love, Peace, & Chicken Grease!

The biggest advantage this spell has over just using a blood or occult infused weapon is the buildup over time. With other weapons you’ll procc bleed while other people are in iframes from a dodge or BHS/quickstep so it won’t do any damage but it is much harder to time your dodge to when the bloodflame bleed proccs.

                                                      • Anonymous

                                                        4. Put Quickstep or Bloodhound Step on it
                                                        5. Use this spell
                                                        6. If you think it's still not salty enough, use healing spell whenever you are at low health
Congratulations! You are now the master of PVP! No one can counter you except they use a one-shot build!

The fact this thing doesn't scale with arcane is baffling to me. I mean you don't really use it for the damage but rather for the hemorrhage but come on man, at least the black flame one has the excuse of being a faith-based incantation

                                                                • Anonymous

Asking if I could combine this with a Frost mage build to quickly proc Frostbite multiple times. PVE only.

                                                                  • Anonymous

Why does it have to be that my gods layer seal with 237 incant scaling makes this spell add more AR than my flame seal with 257 incant? Why can't fromsoft figure out how to accurately represent stats and numbers?

                                                                    • Anonymous

Compared to DS3 where we have all 3 of them, I think it’s just another way of how FS balances the game as there are just too many situations fire get advantages of than the other 2 elements.

                                                                      • Anonymous

If you’re looking for good fire damage use Flaming Strike instead

                                                                                  • Anonymous

does the bleed buildup stack with a weapons innate arcane scaling, for the few buffable weapons that have it?

if so it might make the albinauric halberd that solely scales of arc viable for more than sleep builds.

                                                                                    • Anonymous

Sorry if this is explained above but I found the wording confusing.

Does the fire damage scale with arcane if using the dragon comm. Seal?

It says the "bloodflame blade debuff" doesnt but does that also mean the fire?

                                                                                      • Anonymous

Wonderful bleed till mid-late and you can swap to occult to net more than the 40 effective bleed. You loose the bloodflame AR, but should keep up well enough on the damage front. In exchange, you get great incant scaling

It's also just great for an early faith build

                                                                                        • Anonymous

If you just want fire damage, this spell isn't that great. The scaling is about half of what you would get from electify armament or scholar's armament, and early game the 85 damage from fire grease will outstrip it. Late game ... maybe? But by then you'd be better off using an actual fire spell.

But in terms of bleed build up, this is incredible. 40 bleed might not sound like much, but blood grease and Seppuku only give you 30. Most bleed weapons have about 50 bleed, but this stacks on top of that. I haven't tested this, but I've heard that a normal weapon with innate bleed is often a better bleed weapon than a special weapon like Mohgwyn's Sacred Spear or something that can't be buffed.

                                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                                            • Anonymous

I'm running a dex build right now with no intention of levelling faith besides the minimum. Is there any reason to level up my seal to apply only this one incantation?

                                                                                              • Anonymous

On a dex/arc build, this buff is just illegally, strong, so much more than Seppuku or the Blood Grease (which I carry just in case I run out of FPs).
Bloodflame Blade will build bleed so freaking fast, especially if you powerstance an offhand weapon that has the Blood infusion.
The fact that it keeps building up bleed for a few instants after a successful hit is just the icing on the cake, making scoring Blood Losses much easier.

Seppuku is for full Arcane build with Occult/Blood infusions.

                                                                                                • Anonymous

This buff is looking better since the dual wield status nerf. If you don't want to go for blood or occult affinities on a weapon with natural bleed, one weapon buffed with this will do better buildup than dual-wielded weapons without it. Of course, you can still do both, but 1.07 did a good job making a single weapon in two hands compete with dual wielding. For example, two heavy great stars do 71.5 bleed with an L1 attack now, but one great stars with bloodflame blade does 95. If you use BFB on your right hand weapon, the L1 attack only beats an R1 or R2 by 16.5, while attacking more slowly (and both weapons hitting on the L1 isn't guaranteed). It's still a somewhat tight niche, as perhaps most who want to rapidly hemorrhage enemies will prefer blood/occult weapons, but BFB offers some extra tricks to make it worthwhile.

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

Aside from the comical fires deadly sin combo (which you can just run from) & some obscure ash & weapon combinations, this is ALWAYS worse than just running a bleed or occult infusion. In pvp that is. In Pve its incredible. Put it on a bleed stick, stack hit talismans & use spinning weapon or whatever it's called. Very nice.

Despite this its still in need of a buff. It should scale with arcane when put on arcane scaling weapons (the ripple stuff & a certain mace) giving some relevance to an otherwise niche playstyle.

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

Can you Set Poison / Frost mist AoW to Heavy affinity, and buff it up with Bloodflame Blade, will the poison / frost mist also inflict the Bloodflame Blade debuff along side the life steal / healing?

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

They both stack passive bleeding, while this buff stacks fire damage. Spirits and plant based hate this weapon.

                                                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                                                              • Anonymous

It kills any enemy I use it on long before it can proc the status effect so I stopped casting this on it and switched to electrify armament.

                                                                                                                • Anonymous

When I used it against an NPC invader, I sometimes would get a bleed proc about one half second after the hit landed.

                                                                                                                  • Anonymous

I thought it would be similar to FDS but so far I haven't been able to trigger the effect on the dragons near fort faroth, with bloodflame blade cast on a vulgar militia saw I didn't see the damage burst I'd expect from an enemy that had been successfully bled out, HLE does actually kill the dragons when its cast repeatedly near them but it looks to me like the value of it is breaking the dragons stance in one cast and its follow up then doing the really big damage while its vulnerable. So I'm either doing something wrong or the AoW wasn't intended to do that and has been patched since the page was last updated.
