Borealis the Freezing Fog Combat information

Negations (or Absorptions)

The negation numbers are the % of your damage that gets blocked. For example, if a negation is 60, 40% of that damage by that type will go through and 60% will be negated. Bigger number = less damage. A negation of 100 means no damage goes through, and a negation of -100 mean the enemy takes 2x damage from that source. 0 means damage goes pretty much as is.

Resistances

The resistance numbers are the buildup amount to trigger it. For example, if a resistance is 100 you must deal 100 points of the given buildup to trigger it. Note that these go down over time, and increase each time the effect procs. The values after the "/"s indicate the increased resistances after each successive proc.

Additional Fight Strategy

The Best Tips for Borealis the Freezing Fog:

  • Fight him during the day for better visibility. He creates a persistent blizzard in the area, making it difficult to see at times
  • Use a Strike weapon to take advantage of Borealis's weakness
  • Bring along Thawfrost Boluses to alleviate frost buildup

Additional Attacks & Counters

Attack Description Counter
Most attacks are the same as Flying Dragon Agheel, except that Borealis breathes magical flame that inflicts Frostbite
Roar Sticks its head straight out and roars, dealing damage in an area around it This attack comes out quickly, so do your best to roll or dash out of the way
Glacial Roar Folds its wings up on the ground, raises its head straight up into the air and roars, dealing damage in an area around it, then brings its head down and roars again. The second roar kicks up ice in a wide area and deals Frostbite damage. Only used below 70% health and only once every 50 seconds Move to its back while it's preparing to start its first roar and get in a few hits before running away to avoid getting hit by the ice cloud from the second roar

Borealis the Freezing Fog Lore, Notes & Other Trivia

  • The ice dragons were once Lords of the Mountaintops before their defeat at the hands of the Fire Giants

This was the easiest dragon to kill, except the fact that its breath quite literally one shot you. Just wait till it casts the frostbite breath and shout, then go close and attack, then leave again. rinse and repeat. It doesn't really chase you, just kinda stands there lol

      • Anonymous

this boss is not so much doing damage as it is just waiting, forever.

also don't forget the "we didn't know how to make the game hard" miyazaki trademark of spamming AOE's every 4 seconds

        • Anonymous

flame of the redmanes 3 times at his face and he staggers trust me very cheesy to him, stay in front of his head

          • Anonymous

Pretty cool and visually memorable encounter, but, as most things in late game ER, ruined by poor balancing that prioritizes frustration over fun.

            • Anonymous

Say what you want, but this boss has a pretty scary intro - you are walking in a blizzard that gets thicker and harder with every step, and suddenly you hear a roar and can make out an outline in the freezing fog - something big, a GODDAMN DRAGON!

              • Anonymous

Me and +10 Mimic Tear dual wielding Great Stars made pretty light work of this boss. Finding the comments about resistance to pierce damage hilarious, BONK BOIS ALL DAY

                • Anonymous

take Flame of the Redmanes on a Misericode cast it twice on his head as soon as he comes near you (where he will most likely roar and then lower his head) it takes only 2 casts to poisebreak him, then ripost him. and during his wakeup animation cast it twice again and poise break him right again. stunlock him like this until death. if you notice that you don´t have enough FP for 2 casts take a sip before riposting him and all is well.

                  • Anonymous

Just cheese him from the cliffs, people. Jeez, so many complaining that they can't stand at a dragon's feet and trade blows with it like a demigod - you're not meant to easily kill a dragon by pecking at its ankles with melee weapons, and if that's your jam prepare for some pain!

The cliffs behind/beside where he spawns are to narrow for him to land on, so just summon a Tiche or a Lhutel or something and hop up there and start spamming ranged. Rock Sling, Night Mist, even Rot or Poison arrows - it doesn't matter. If you refuse to summon or use ranged attacks, you have no one to blame but yourself.

Riding under Borealis and using Flame of Frenzy worked great. Cleared on the first try. high incant seal and offhand Frenzied Seal + buffs =1000s of damage per charged cast.

                      • Anonymous

Black Knife Tiche +9 and Rotten Battle Hammer + 20 with Bleed infusion, from horseback with the Lance talisman and Kindred of Rot's exultation made this fight manageable on the first go. Low resistance to striking weapons.

                        • Anonymous

I just don't find any of the dragon fights enjoyable. They all can glitch, your weapons only work on specific parts of their bodies. Horseback battles are not the best, combat isn't fine-tuned enough - and it is almost impossible as melee without doing it on horseback. The freezing fog is a neat concept (somewhat annoying implementation) that should've been something other than just another reskinned dragon.

                          • Anonymous

±8 Spirit Jelly, 1 rot breath and some frenzied burst attacks from horseback made this fight very manageable.

"Bla bla bla hes so op & i cant kill him or whatever."

just get on your horse & spam pest threads under him. Seriously.

                              • Anonymous

Black knife tiche and bloodboon ritual ash of war from mohgwyn sacred spear. The sacred spears ability build bleed, very ez to land on the boss while standing under it, and poise breaks the **** out of him for some reason, I think because you are actually hitting him with the stab into the air as well as the bleed aoe effect

                                • Anonymous

Super fair this thing just screams like a ***** and instantly builds up frostbite on every ****ing thing around it for a mile the entire ****ing time. Seriously how the **** does this trash make it through playtesting? Does fromsoft actually not do any playtesting whatsoever? This boss 100% feels like one they just didn't give the slightest **** about, they were just like, **** it it's at the end of the game so people should be 2 hitting everything by now, let's just give it a completely bull **** moveset cause noone will ever see all its attacks anyway. Who needs boss fights to be enjoyable instead of just consistently encouraging the player to just run past it. Cause obviously the path to becoming elden lord is all about just running from everything.

why does this guy have extreme pierce resistance when literally every other dragon is weak to it? they could have made it a neutral resistance like 15 or 20 but no they had to pump the absorption all the way up to freaking 80. nothing really notable on why he resists pierce so hard.

                                    • Anonymous

Try the taunter's tongue around this boss, then wait for an invader before starting the boss fight. Assuming you know it's moveset (particularly the roar attacks) well enough, it will be BEYOND hilarious.

                                      • Anonymous

Will literally chain spam the frost breath attacks, would rather fight 4 lichdragons at once than this coward. Seriously this fight is almost as pathetic as elden beast

                                        • Anonymous

Ya so much fun to fight an enemy that runs away to breath mass aoe attacks in a 9 visibility arena.... who the actual **** thought that was a good idea? Why would you not make this dragon prioritize melee attacks to prevent such a completely unpleasant experience?

wow, fighting dragons is bullshit enough with their constant flying and AOE spam, but the screaming insta damage and frostbite takes the cake. literally awful. 10/10 fromsoft

Latenna hard carried I just maintained aggro while she did damage. its first attack took me down to like 10 %

I love bosses that just fly away
with nearly unrollable damage in the process every time you get close to them. Great design.

Really bad design. Either you have the usual attacks of dragons and he's completly doable, but sometimes he just decides to roar, which seems completly unavoidable, deals frost build up and high damage, and he can spam it... why fromsoft... why?

                                                    • Anonymous

Duck behind one of those LARGE tree thingies on the lake, his Freezing Breath does no damage there, wait till he approaches (he gets almost on top of you) hit him with Comet Azur (or whatever you fancy)

using dex weapons feels like tickling it so i switched to the serpent hunter sword and won easily
also this was the first boss i fought on horse

Challenging fight for sure, but is heavily trivialized after learning its patterns. Basically just go away whenever he roars, moves its head, shakes its tail or flies in the air, and then you have a huge time window to attack.

                                                          • Anonymous

I used Bolt of Gransax, very effective with over 1600 head damage (+10, str 45, dex 62), while the attack from Bloodhound's Fang(+10) was really weak, only 160 damage

                                                            • Anonymous

Didn't find this guy too bad except for that really annoying roar attack. Torrent kept getting stuck on his wings whenever he did it so I couldn't escape and died.

To the guy who invaded me and my friend on our first visit and pulled us to the boss fight to trigger the fog, hope you enjoyed bloodhound stepping your way around the entire map for 40 minutes before you got yeeted by a force close. If you take the piss, make peace with holding said piss in both hands lmao

                                                                • Anonymous

Strike, Bleed and Dragonwound Grease are effective against this son of a wh*re. If you go Dex, use flails; if Str, use Great Stars, if Quality, use Spiked Club. Or if you go Int, Rock Sling to his face; the same goes for Fth with Stone Of Gurranq.

                                                                  • Anonymous

When I started this fight for the first time, I misread the name as "Borealis the Freezing Frog" and I got excited because I thought I was about to fight an original boss. Instead, it was another dragon fight, and one of the worst designed dragon fights in Fromsofts catalogue at that. There is nothing fun about this boss. Just a bunch of AoE attacks that can kill you if you make one mistake. I'm not sure what the devs were thinking with this one.

                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                      • Anonymous

Ambiguous hitboxes -- the roar is the worst, you practically have to guess how far this thing reaches out when he uses it. Also, random 80% resist to certain forms of physical damage means that there's a high chance the main weapon you've been using until now is suddenly useless. If you're not bringing magic or bleed, then bring some gosh darn Dragonwound Grease, and lots of it.

                                                                        • A testament to how well this game is optimised: This boss is literally the only time my game has dropped to an unplayable framerate on PS4. Sure, some places with heavy rain will drop to about 24 frames, but this thing spawning and spamming frost breath was the first time I hit 10 or lower. Inputs get eaten halfway through the fight, and the frostbite stagger from a huge AOE is enough to kill Torrent, and then I can't move and just die.

                                                                          I hate this thing.

                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                                    • Anonymous

Disengaging freezing breath is bull, at least that is what i think it was, allows breath attack to hit behind it all the way to middle of tail in AoE with big stagger. Can seriously eat diseased hog. I only beat this dragon after i cleared the rest of the game on my first char, but it was with the f-off pest threads cheese. Other dragons? no issue! Methodically beating its ankles and smacking with WA's

I know, let's make a boss that will one shot most players unless they use mounted combat."

                                                                                          • Anonymous

I’m trying to kill him on ng++ and his hp is insane. Even full powered Godrick axe is barely scratching him and his breath can one shot you, my character wears a tree sentinel set with 71 vigour and still died in one ice breath attack.

                                                                                            • Anonymous

                                                                                              • Anonymous

What a glitchfest and total disaster. Clearly, this boss was not play tested. Fight experience: 1) Run up to the area and can't see due to blizzard. Get sniped from something flying I physically cannot see to dodge for its opening volley. Fight 2) Run up close to it before it can fly and I lose sight now that I know it is there. It screeches at close range instantly killing me. 3) Hide behind a considerably massive rock to avoid its breath attack that proceeds to pass right through killing me. 4) Uses an AoE screech attack with far larger range than the other one it has, however, it glitched I later found out and had like quadruple its normal range killing me from a massive distance approximately an entire flight range away as it had just escaped. I found in later fights the range should normally be much smaller for that specific AoE. 5) Almost have it totally dead finally and it flies away and randomly breaths ice at ground on the other side of the cliff area near us hitting jellyfish which somehow heals it up to 80% health. Wtf. 6) Kill it. F that dragon.

                                                                                                • Anonymous

You simply can’t get hit by either of those but it is difficult because I cant figure out any way to dodge the roar if you are on him when he does it. This is the only boss where I’d say torrent is pretty much required because you just can’t win right on him if he decides to use certain abilities.

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

You can cheese him by unlocking the spiritcallers cave first. Then aggro him and get him to come up by the cave entrance. He will stay down on the lake for a few breath attacks and if you are up on the rocks by the cave entrance, he can't hit you. Use night maidens mist to get his hp down a decent chunk. Eventually he will jump into the air at which point you should head for the cave. He will land a little bit away from the entrance and will slowly walk there, so try to get another night maidens mist out in front of the cave for him to walk into. Then go all the way down by the site of grace and around the corner, his breath attack has a crazy range and will one shot most players, so make sure you're out of the way. After he hasn't attacked for a bit, rush back out by the site of grace and take a couple steps toward him. This is important. If you sneak out, he will breath straight down the tunnel and likely kill you. But if you rush out and toward him a bit, it seems to trigger his side to side breath attack, which won't make it in the cave. Once you see him away his head to the left, run to the cave entrance almost to where you are outside and hit him with a night maidens mist, then run back to the site of grace and around the corner. Repeat til he's dead.

                                                                                                          • Anonymous

Don’t try to fight this guy the fair way take him to cheese town, what a soab

Lure him to the cave, then you can camp around the grace and duck to the side when he breaths...and just slowly whittle him down in pure safety.

He got knocked down by this after third full RT/LT flail combo, leaving him with about 85% HP. Then switched to Wing Of Astel and spammed Nebula. It killed him before he managed to get up.

But avoidable and totally fair imo. As everyone has stated below, rotten breath definitely helps but really anything that applies scarlet rot will do, especially if you have a distraction like mimic or another ash summon. Scarlet rot and Rivers Of Blood AoW did the trick!

If he manages to go around, just run away to the south side, resetting him and then luring him out again.

I am no fan of cheesing, but the difficulty in this game tends to be ridiculous in some spots and there are way too many oneshot mobs out there.

                                                                                                                            • Anonymous

Gotta be honest, I don't understand all the hate and dismay in the comments on this boss. You kill it the same way as all the other "Flying Dragon"-type dragons, with two caveats: use a strike weapon if you're melee since it's highly resistant to slash and thrust damage (even standard damage is fine), and ride away when it roars.

That's literally it. Just stay on your horse, whack feet, wheel and circle to avoid stomps/swipes as necessary, pursue to stay under it when it flies away to avoid breath (or ride far out if you didn't react in time to get under the breath), repeat. No gimmicks required, same mounted combat tactics that work on all the others.

                                                                                                                              • Anonymous
