attributes required elden ring wiki guide 18Requires

Briars of Punishment is a Sorcery in Elden Ring. Briars of Punishment: Wounds caster to unleash trail of bloodthorns. Updated to Patch 1.07.

An aberrant sorcery discovered by exiled criminals.
Theirs are the sorceries most reviled by the academy.

Wounds the caster with thorns of punishment, sending a trail of bloodthorns running over the ground to impale enemies from below.
This sorcery can be cast repeatedly.

The guilty, their eyes gouged by thorns, lived in eternal darkness. There, they discovered the blood star.

This thing has some odd interactions when invading. Can’t describe them properly, but you can see how it goes up and down depending on the landscape and can pursue foes. But still wouldn’t recommend it id you are alone.

I hope Aberrant sorceries would cost hp instead of focus. It would give them special niche while making them unique, considering there are only 2 of these spells in game.

        • Anonymous

Damage equivalent to Great Glintstone Shard. Moves slower. Casts slower. Longer range. Costs 3 fp less. Costs 50 hp per cast.

I like this spell because I dislike the spamability of the glintstone spells. I would prefer that this would cost less to cast. 6 fp seems right. hp cost of 50 is a lot and really adds up. The significance of this hp cost alone can justify cheap fp cost to cast.

Thorn spells' damage seems significantly buffed in the latest 1.10 patch. With 80 faith, dual wielding guilt staff, and full alberich set, both spells can deal 1200~1600 damage to enemies and 700~1000 to players and bosses.

So by how much exactly is the bleed buildup influenced by arcane? How much more with like 80 arcane compared to minimum requirement arcane? And how much is it buffed by the albinauric staff? Is it really worth it pumping arcane and using the albinauric staff or is it better to use a staff with higher sorc scaling like Lusat's staff(the low FP cost makes this spell perfect for this staff)? Wish this site would have all these crucial infos!

Neither the Carians or Golden Order seem kind to Aberrant Sorcerers.

I feel like the cruelty of Carians is understated. They lack the power of the Golden Order/Marika, but there is clear reference to the abuse of ‘undesirable elements.’

There really isn’t any information on the Carians preventing the ill treatment of Omens or Merchants either.

Just about all hierarchy in Elden Ring is ****.

Feel like it should scale with the amount of health used to cast it, like a percentage of your max health is used to cast, and is added as physical damage

This would be interesting in an Ash of War, likely one with a followup attack that's too slow to actually be useful

This spell has some really strange properties that could maybe be useful, I've not tested much. It can travel insane distances when cast from an elevated platform or cliff - like much further than anything else in the game except prob arrows. It can also climb walls and hit elevated enemies you otherwise couldn't, and it can travel through/under breakable decor (like fences) without breaking them or stopping, and can hit enemies behind small trees, etc. It behaves very strangely around flying enemies near ruins/short walls, traveling in circles and changing direction. It's finicky for sure and Idk if it has any pvp applications, but it can do some neat stuff. Someone should do more testing; I'm lazy.

The main use I have found for this, is to use it when you need to deal magic damage as a FTH caster, but find the other options to expensive, or if your a FTH/INT character and wanna meme.

I've tried a build, lvl 340. 99 arc, 30 int and faith albunauric staff. talismans for hp return and lord of blood talisman and the graven masses + knot and i have to say: while its fun and different the spells are very weak. max 1500 dmg The blood buildup is very low and most things die on 3+ before it procs bloodloss from casting. mainly usefull for triggering bloodloss from a range after it has been build up by ur weapon. like the eleonoras blade or the katana or rose mace.

But when i went to hailigtree i just switched back to 99 int and night sorc + dual staff + knot and talismans for dmg and max charge. Then you do like 3086 dmg per cast. which is come out like 9 cast in same time you would cast 3 of the blood sorc.,
plus the night sorc dont draw agro so ur pet can tank the boss and you just nuke :D

all in all, very cool spells that look awsome but not very good dmg wise.

ps. with the proper talisman u can cast this without dying from ur own spell

Anon 26 Jan 2023 00:16, well obviously your doing higher damage than Anon 20 Jan 2023 20:58, BECAUSE__No 1 : he or she was using aberrant sorceries in pvp while your using the W E A K, W E A K, W E A K, W E A K thorn Sorceries in pve, and you were most likely using in against a weak foe (try using this against Melenia, honestly respect to you if you can get one hit on her using thorn sorceries hahaha lol)__ No 2 : you were definitely using stuff to make it do 100million % more damage lol, at that point I can defeat her with a lvl 1 dagger. Like SERIOUSLY WHY DOES FROMSOFT DISLIKE pvp INTELLIGENCE SO MUCH. There are too many counter to int…. Plus it’s depressing that you need F A I T H to make a blood and necromancer build :(

Anon 24 Oct 2022 23:32 __ “ HP cost is 50 regardless of the staff used“ wow that’s madness ! ! ! I though it was a hefty cost, but that’s way to much for the pitiful dps it has. For example, after casting 6 times, I’m inflicted 300 damage onto myself, plus I’m inflicting bleed (i.e. hemorrhage) on me. hahaha LoL who ruined INTILLIGENCE (why are stars / death / blood related to Faith???)…

Using a 42 Faith Vagabond, no investment in Int or Arc, double Staves of the Guilty+Alberich Set & Buffs+Talismans, my Brairs of Punishment can hit up to 1200-1500 damage per cast not even counting the built in Bleed build up! For a spell that only costs 9 FP and some HP that is easily regenerated by Blessing of the Erdtree, Holy Ground, or even Warming/Frenzyflame Stones, it feels respectable though admittedly needy in regards to what gear you can wear.

FROM made death and blood for Faith? at this point they should make a new Elden Ring where Faith isn’t connected to Death (deathblight, destined death, death, lightning death) or Blood, or to stars in any shape or form…. P.S. just to test it’s damage with the Albinauric Catalyst at 80 arc in pvp, all I was able to do was an UNEXPECTED and ATROCIOUS 380 damage ! ? yup, yet again, it’s absolutely impossible INT to ever come close to Faith, personally there’s no point in future dlc. Literally in DS3 sorceries weren’t even animated : (

                                      • Anonymous

Don't waste your time with the Albinauric Staff. The supposed Bleed scaling with Arcane is abysmal, unless you have like 80 Arcane, in which case you surely have better ways to inflict Bleed. The real purpose for this spell is to give pure Faith builds a way to deal Magic damage.

                                        • Anonymous

ok but why do they do magic damage? sure the benefit from terra magicka is nice but it also makes no sense whatsoever

People complain about these spells too much in my opinion. You need pretty much minimal intelligence to pull this build off, starting int for the prophet is sufficient without having to put a single level into. Also just drop arcane, the bleed on it ain't that great anyway and go full faith. If you keep str/dex at around 20 for some lighter melee weapons and go full in for 65-70 faith, these give some nice burst damages. Staff of the Guilty stacks, so having an unapgraded one in offhand also helps. Alberich's set is also a must have. All in all, pretty needy but fun build that can also serve as a pyro/lightning warrior if you get tired in these thorns without any respec

Wait so I can still chain cast the holy boomerang spells between each other but I can't with my bloody sin spells? That is so disappointing man both thorn spells only work well when combined for good close mid range mix ups if you can switch between them without it being obvious.

                                              • Haven't seen this commented on yet. This spell can be cast while being on a much higher elevation than the target. Doesn't even matter if the terrain isn't connected. If standing on one of those stone platforms sticking out of cliffsides, the spell will still travel the full distance on the ground below it.

I need to do more testing as it seems like it goes up/down inclines with no issue but will trigger on even the smallest vertical piece of terrain.

I play PVP mostly and I'm having success getting the drop on people with good positioning and a little patience. This spell also knocks people out of the air while they're doing those floating cast animations. Seems like it may interrupt ALL support/attack animations.

A spell for people who like investing in Faith and Arcane, but also want to invest in Intelligence and use staves.

                                                  • Astrologers, if you don't want to invest into Faith past the starting 7 points to hit 24:
                                                    - Two Fingers Heirloom +5
                                                    - Imp Head (Corpse) +2 (there are other helms too)
                                                    - Faith-knot Crystal Tear +10
I had actual points invested for a while not just for this but other sorceries. This feels better.

When people finally discovered how to make briars spells useful by chaincasting, Froms just removed chaincasting.

                                                        • Costs 80 hp to cast regardless of how much health you have. Is not affected by resistances or reductions, but I don't know about staff stat scaling. Azur's and Lusat's staves don't boost the cost, either.

                                                          • Anonymous

The damage is comparably mediocre even wield two staff of guilty and wear full damage boost set. Disappointed.

Does the blood loss buildup always scale with Arcane or with the normal staff sorcery scaling? The Wiki page here just says "This buildup is affected by the Arcane stat, if the staff has Arcane scaling", but what happens if it doesn't?

                                                              • Anonymous

I'm pretty damn positive this spell being faith is a fromsoft typo. It only makes sense it should be arc. Just like how the arc weapons were all busted on release.

                                                                • Anonymous

Honestly unless they un-nerf the bloodthorn spells in some way, they’re useless. Most shard or icecrag spells will out damage this without having to wear garbage armor and wield a pointless staff in your offhand. This thing doesn’t build bloodloss anymore (not literally, it’s just so little it may as well not do it at all) even with the Albinauric staff. The spell damage will probably kill whatever you’re attacking before it procs, and you’ll do a ton of damage to yourself for no reason. If you want magic damage + blood loss use the Clayman’s Spear. If you want blood loss at range with magic damage… well it’s not really possible anymore. Maybe one of the bows? Horn bow with blood loss arrows may work. Otherwise, use flies.

                                                                  • Anonymous

If you want long-range bleed, just use swarm of flies or a crossbow, and if you just want to use this, use staff of the guilty on a faith build so you can dip your toe into other sorceries like pebble or slicer too

                                                                    • Anonymous

Sucks cuz I finally figured out how to do a bloodloss/magic build and the change basically removed this as being a possible ranged magic damage blood loss.

                                                                      • Anonymous

Not the damage that struggles to pass Cometshard even after equipping an entire set, using the Albinauric Staff with 80/50 Arc/Int and Staff of the Guilty in off-hand? Bleh. There's always next patch for us would-be bloodmagi.

I don't play in PVP and between the literal game not saying it inflicts hemorrhage and the wiki not saying it inflicts hemorrhage, I'm left to have no ****ing idea. One would assume that a sorcery that's ENTIRE aesthetic is blood would be able to inflict it but in using this in pve rather often, I haven't seen it inflict bloodloss once.
(Build references: Int 70 Faith 50 Arc 18 ... If the bloodloss effect scales with arcane then I dunno, maybe that should be MENTIONED somewhere)

                                                                            • Anonymous

                                                                              • Anonymous

Normally, your repeat casts would give you a slight reduced cast time on successive casts by just repeatedly slamming the staff down, but if you switch to Briars of Sin, Sin will combo and come out REALLY fast.

(I didn’t use Full Moon sorcery because I couldn’t at the time). I also forgot to open with Seppuku. It’s NG+ and I’m level 202, but it gives a good idea of how this can work. It’s just for fun, I know I’m not pro. :)

Haven't tested with other sorcery specific spells tho, so maybe there are better combinations.

You may get hit during the Briars of Sin cast, but you shouldn't be interrupted unless by a massive attack because of the hyper armor. Lastly, if you hold the Staff of the Guilty in your opposite hand, you will gain the additional 30% damage bonus on these two spells even when casting with the Albinaruic Staff.

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

Update with the Arcane fix. The Albinauric staff INCREASES BLOOD LOSS BUILD UP when you use it to cast the spell. I suspect this is because it scales off arcane. Hold the Staff of Guilty in one hand and cast it with the Albinauric staff in the other hand. With Albrecht’s hat and gloves, the staff of guilty, and Albinauric staff, I was decimating everything in my path with zero problem and no sorcery damage talismans. Don’t forget the combo the spells. Since Albinauric scales sorcery off arcane AND Int, you can use this combination with just about any spells and they are still effective, while the thorn spells are excellent.

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

Rocking about 35 Vigor at the moment and even when I don’t use HP talismans it feels like my mana pool is huge (30 Mind) compared to using some of the harder hitting slower spells.

                                                                                                          • Anonymous

Can get blood loss proc on tougher larger mobs in about 3 to 4 casts. 2 to 3 casts on players. Hits for over 1000 without the Full Moon debuff and no sorcery or magic damage buffs or talismans. And about 600-700 to larger enemies (like clean rot knights) while they block. You can also Seppuku yourself while using the blood loss talisman to further increase the damage of your spells. It’s really nice for hitting stuff as it comes to you and switching to a weapon with blood loss. I’ve been using Eleonara’s (so I have not been utilizing Seppuku to boost my damage while casting at the moment.) Having a great time and destroying all kinds of stuff and I’m not really equipped talisman-wise for damage.

Also spamming this spell and then combo-ing to Briars of Sin for the instant PBAE when enemies get to me has been fantastic in pvp.

Sadly the fp costs for both death and blood magic dont really justify their damage even with a decent 46/46 spread with death staff the death spells are pratically uselss outside of pvp and even then they are medicore in pvp.
