Dispels enemy spells and retaliates with glintblades
![]() |
Carian Retaliation is a Sorcery in Elden Ring. Carian Retaliation spell can be used to cancel enemy spells while attacking them back with a projectile.
See Ash of War: Carian Retaliation for the Ash of War variant
One of the sorceries of the Carian royal family.
Swing your staff to dispel incoming sorceries and incantations, using their power to retaliate with glintblades.
This was the Carian royal family's secret means to prepare against the disloyalty of the academy. The moon and stars would one day go their separate ways.
Where to find Carian Retaliation

Elden Ring Carian Retaliation Guide
- Carian Sorcery
- Boosted by the Carian Gintblade Staff
- Casting it dispels the first enemy spell to hit the blue aura, and forms three magic gintblades.
- Stamina Cost: 15
- Deals magic damage
- Glintblades deal a total of (Sorcery Scaling x 1.15) magic damage. (Needs further testing)
- It's often more viable to use the ash of war variant.

Spell is bugged or info here is outdated. With 80 INT and Lusat’s Staff +10, I’m only hitting 479 with all 3 glintblades hitting a Godrick soldier. Should be 3 times damage if each glintblade is supposed to be 1.15*sorcery scaling
- Anonymous
This spell is bugged. Tested on Godrick soldier with 80 int 80 arc albo staff popping my own bubbles for glintblades. Did a whopping 172 damage.
- Anonymous
Unusable in its current condition, should convert the fp of the spells being blocked and add it to your own fp pool.
- Anonymous
invaluable on low level invasions. It one shots any magic spammers.
- Anonymous
How does this compare with Glintblade Phalanx in terms of damage?
- Anonymous
Mt Carian Retaliation is weak asf...whats going on?? 70 int..
- Anonymous
This. Is. The. Spell. There is an Ash of War of the same name. This page is for the spell. You people are dense.
- Anonymous
why do I feel like ash of war hits much harder than the spell? Has anyone tested both in terms of damage and scaling?
- Anonymous
All the comments in here like the comments in all the other sections are about how good it is in pvp. Do any of you actually play the main game? No one talks about how good a weapon or spell is in the actual main game.

Been trying to get this to work in PvP against spellcasters, faith casters, etc and it just... doesn't work? I'm not sure if I'm just missing timing or if there's a fundamental reason why nothing happens when I use it as a spell is cast at me but it's certainly not reflecting anything when a full Stars of Ruin is cast and I'm certain I was able to use Retaliation (the spell, not the Ash) and nothing happened, I took the full damage...

THIS IS THE SORCERY. IF YOU ARE HERE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THE BUG OR GLOAT THAT THE BUG IS GONE, GO HERE: https://eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com/Ash+of+War:+Carian+Retaliation

What does this AoW scale with? Do I need to upgrade the shield or level up my Int?
- Anonymous
1.04 patch bids you adieu exploiters. I'm still going to run eternal darkness though
- Anonymous
lol its annoying that so many comments are confusing the spell with the ash of war
- Anonymous
So how do I start this class?? I think it’s too late tho since they just updated
- Anonymous
They were pretty quick to nerf Sword of Night and Flame. Hopefully they pick up the pace and patch this nonsense out sooner rather than later. It destroys the entire pvp experience.
- Anonymous
I had no idea how good this was until my second playthrough. I can't believe I can get buckler level parry frames (plus a few more frames) on a medium shield plus rad spell parries. This is awesome!
- Anonymous
Guess this needs to be said. This is the spell version. Not the ash of war version.
- Anonymous
Currently an insta-win button in pvp if you just can’t find yourself good enough to use weapons. Good stuff.
- Anonymous
Do I need to have the Magic Ash of War on my shield? People are saying the parried spell scales only with the level of the shield and my intelligence. So if I spec into a Heavy shield and use Carian Retaliation with like my like 50 intelligence it will still do butt ton of damage?
- Anonymous
so fun to kill mommys lil wizards with it in pvp. they just cant stop spam spells cuz magic looks so grate in this game :D partialy broken yeah. you dont see daggers fly and they remains above enemys head after been used and self proc ofc. but u can see that your spell been reflected, u can dodge daggers and get 0 dmg, and u can block em with carian shield to get low dmg. for comparation you cannot dodge riposte dmg atall.
- Anonymous
Noticed that this changes the buckler's parry animation to a normal parry. Does this mean that using this on a buckler reduces its parry frames, or does it still keep the buckler frames, but gets the normal parry animation instead?
- Anonymous
You can use it on your own rain of stars and magic dawnpour spells
- Anonymous
Which one does more poise damage: the spell version or the ash of war version?
- Anonymous
you can use the spell on the glintstone scrap same way as the shield aow, but it does next to no damage. they are still invisible however, and it makes for hilarious mind games if the other players arent keen
- Anonymous
Works on Godskin's blackflame toss, +24 w/ash of war version shield did ~2500 dmg to the noble in Liurnia, and they used it 3 times in a row.
- Anonymous
Can anyone confirm (preferably with evidence) that the damage of the glintblades scales with the damage of the spell that gets parried?
- Anonymous
It's bugged and can even be used in pvp. You can retaliate your own spell/item and do ~3000 dmg per shot with any +25 shield. It cheeses everything again just like the bugged Erdtree Greatshield, while in pvp the other player can't even see the spell animation this time.

New cheat/exploit where you can insta kill in pvp using this by parrying your own spells. Needs patched ASAP.
- Anonymous
This is getting a nerf in the near future. If you use a glintstone scrap and PARRY YOUR OWN PROJECTILE, it has been reported to have dealt over 16k damage, one shot on any other player, npc, and a looooot of bosses.

To be clear: you need to drop down on the south EASTERN side of the three sisters area, simply drop down to where the Manor Lower Level site of grace is.
- Anonymous
some additional info to the wiki: you can also buy it from a merchant called "Pidia, Carian Servant" who is at the upper level of the church in Caria Manor. The one the bonfire "Manor Lower Level" is located, however you enter the upper floor by jumping down from the Three Sisters area. It only costs 3k runes there instead of 9k.

Everyone saying this sucks has probably been using the spell version, which does piddly damage.
The shield version is broken - been doing 300 ~ 400 per glintblade in PvP at SL 110 with a +12 shield. It's a friggin oneshot. Enjoy it before the nerfs come lol

Doesn't work for swarm of flies, good luck countering arcane spammers

First time i tried this was in ng+7. a centipede's string shots turned into 2100 damage dealt back. the buckler was +24 but still this is damn good for its fp cost!

Best Anti-ting with any High Magic resistant Shield, wait for any Blue magic dart use Retaliate and insta aggro Mage 90% time one jump shot works in PVP
Spell version is ****. Shield version does WAY more damage and doubles as a parry.
- Anonymous
I think something in the latest update broke this; the swords aren't doing damage anymore. I remember testing it for the first time against the mage enemies at the academy, and the swords were doing damage to them. Now, when I just tried it again, the spawned swords aren't doing anything at all, except for a moment of minor stagger.
Might be an enemy specific bug, but I'll have to test it against more enemy types to see for sure.

This spell would work if the glintstone blades would target the enemy mage instantly, but now it is completely useless. I just get barraged and even if I deflect more I dont put more damage into the enemy. Waste of memory and FP. If enemy mages couldn't do anything but fire single glinstone shards, this spell would work. You will get hit anyway by the second barrage of colourful whatevers no matter how good your reaction is.
- Anonymous
Lol what how is everyone saying this sucks this **** destroys mages all the way. It doesn't always destroy their spells but they never see the glintblades coming and at SL133 oneshots Every mage.
- Anonymous
I wish the damage or number of little glintblades you get from this scaled with the enemy spell. Like if it was stone pebble, you’d get one, it was comet you’d get a full phalanx worth

"This was the Carian royal family's secret means to prepare against the disloyalty of the academy."
No wonder they fell, this spell sucks lmao

You need to see be able to see the future to use this with this much delay or otherwise youre a god.

I thought this would be a useful trump card against magic users, but unfortunately it is VERY difficult to use. The timing window is tight, arguably tighter than rolling. The Phalanx-like Glint Blades it summons to retaliate with work similarly to the ones summoned by the Carian Phalanx. This means that they don't shoot back right away and deal minimal damage/stagger, as well as having very low range. Most disappointingly it doesn't work well against a stream of projectiles, a type of magic many enemies use. It CAN absorb multiple projectiles within the brief parry window, but it usually can't be recasted fast enough for a stream of projectiles. Normal Parry attacks justify their stringent timing requirements with massive reward, that of instantly stance breaking an enemy. For this to be useful, it needs to do something similar. For example, if it did something similar to what the Tree Sentinel's Shield did and instantly sent back a massive staggering projectile it would be worth it. Right now it is all the difficulty of parrying with none of the rewards. This is further compounded by the difficulty of picking the right spell you need. You'll never have time to select this spell and use it in the heat of the moment.
Alternatively if this spell either put up a long lasting barrier or was something like blocking for shields, it could also have a niche. As it is, it is pretty unrewarding, you might as well just roll. That, or cast Sorcerous Shield to make your Magic Negation stronger instead.
Let me know if anyone finds good use cases for this spell!

I tried to use it againt STARSCOURGE RADAHN and it didn't work. Maybe it dosen't work on bosses.

Sold by Preceptor Seluvis at Seluvis's Rise for 9000 runes, after completing his quest. Requires 17 Int and costs 8 FP to cast.
Let it normal parry like the shield AOW variant and I’ll consider. Maybe consider using it. Would look pretty cool to get a parry with a staff. Would be fun in say an dex/frost/scholars armament build. Other than that. AOW works so much better after they fixed it. You can run an entire staff build with a shield, save the spell slot and throw on carian retaliation. Which can then still be buffed by scholars shield.
