Momentarily sparks flame from hand
![]() |
Catch Flame is an Incantation in Elden Ring. Catch Flame deals a spark of fire to enemies within range during combat.
Incantation originating from a sinister prophecy.
Momentarily sparks flame from the caster's hand.
This incantation can be cast without delay after performing another action.
The flame of ruin is anathema to the Erdtree. But prophets sometimes glimpse it within the faith all the same. Sadly when this occurs their sole reward is banishment.
Catch Flame Location in Elden Ring
Catch Flame can be found in the following locations:
- Starting equipment for the Prophet class.
- Sold by Brother Corhyn at the Roundtable Hold for 600
Elden Ring Catch Flame Guide
- Fire Monk Incantation
- Stamina Cost: 17
- Deal (Seal Scaling x1,67) fire damage before resistances
- Low-cost Incantation (10 FP per cast).
- Uses only 1 Memory Slot.
- Requires low Faith (8).
- Cast speed is very fast.
- Can serve as an efficient melee alternative for a pure Faith build, or as an effective early game option for any player with enough FP to spend
- Compared with Bestial Sling (the other low-cost faith damage spell), Catch Flame deals much more damage, and deals fire damage (which can be buffed via the Fire Scorpion Charm) but has a far smaller AOE and range, making it slightly unreliable against fast moving enemies.
- Can be chain-cast as long as player has enough FP.
- Very limited range.
- Moves slightly forward when used.
- This spell, along with Flame Sling and Fire's Deadly Sin, doesn't have a sigil when casted, unlike other spells in the game, this may reference why Giant's Seal doesn't boosts the spells.
- When casting Catch Flame at mid air, one can chain the spell with Magma Breath, which changes the casting animation into a swift spray, which can then be chained with another Magma Breath cast.
- Similar to the "Combustion" spell from the Souls series.
Elden Ring Catch Flame Notes & Tips
- When cast immediately before Magma Breath it significantly reduces the cast time of the latter

if you think an 8 faith starter incantation is "too OP" and "needs a nerf", that's literally your skill issue. Learn to play.

You can parry Carian Slicer pretty easily, so everyone saying Carian Slicer is better in PvP should just git gud at parries or use Golden Parry so that the parries hit themselves.

I really like the running L1 running L1 running L1 running L1 mix-up.

How would I fix it? Remove the running attack, but keep the backstep and rolling attacks. Now it’s a tricky, surprise spell with absurd damage but can’t be used as the main driver of momentum. Still annoying but no more one spell pvpers.
- Anonymous
Can easily get to 900 dmg per cast (before enemy resistances) WITH 103 poise WITH max cast speed on a 150 RL build in invasions. Very fun 2 or 3 shotting people in a second.
- Anonymous
Apparently, you can (backstep + cast) (jump + cast) or (dash + cast) with Catch Flame.
This Incantation is a hidden gem.

30 Mar 2023 05:24 Lol I was invading someone's world (my character has 60 vigor and erdtree favor +2, so I have almost 2000 HP), then a phantom kills me with just 3 catch flame hits, I'm sorry but I call this bullshit, there is no way a spell like that should do over 650 damage. It needs the same PvP nerf that Carian Slicer got in 1.08, I'm surprised this didn't get nerfed too, people can just spam this and win.

- Anonymous
It should't deal so much damage considering how fast it is. At least in PVP.
- Anonymous
Everyone complaining about how it needs to be nerfed don't take into consideration that this is not a fighting game, it is not an Esports game...it's an rpg with a multiplayer function. Do you just want them to nerf everything that kills you to your disliking? I fight A LOT of players who know how to dodge my Catch Flame. It's not broken, you just need to come up with a personal strategy for yourself or a counter plan.
I shouldn't have to say this, but...Git Gud.
- Anonymous
Where do you get that this is a fire monk incantation? It doesn't say in the description, doesn't get the bonus and fire monks don't cast this right? They cast O Flame.

This should not deal over 600 damage and stun my character that has 88 poise. I agree it needs a nerf.
- Anonymous
This spell deals way too much poise damage and damage at the same time, it shouldn't do both considering how fast it is.
From nerfed Bestial Sling and Carian Slicer so I expect Catch Flame to be next.
I forgot to mention something. This spell is currently bugged. It can hit twice if you do a jumping catch flame. It's rare to happen and not sure what exactly causes it. I suspect it's from using it frame perfect during the jump so the game thinks you used another one when you touch grass which also means if you get good at timing it you can make it consistent. It'll probably be fixed
Pretty sure it does 94-95 poise damage. It's one of those spells you can make a min maxed build for with low mind, high poise and flame grant me strength physick etc to hit for (probably) 800 a pop to even strength builds with their high fire resist. It's just that it needs those buffs active to do insane damage.
If you have a way to true combo it you can deal with high poise but otherwise it gets shut down by good players if you don't have buffs because of low single hit damage. Does around 350-410 damage against strength builds with decent armor on 45/45 int faith setup. Easy to outtrade by itself unless you time it badly and get hit by 2. You can also jump it to counter and probably more.
I think it's just right balance-wise without the edge cases of buff stacking but that's just an issue with buffs. If you nerfed this like slicer it would just get run over by strength builds especially. It is pretty powerful when you don't have 95 poise though.

It's as effortless as rapier's light attack spamming, but with higher damage.

Why we didn’t get a black flame version of this is beyond me

Carian slicer is and will always be better
Stay made faith boys

Burned Malenia's butt with it to crisp. Then went on to H.Loux, Radagon and E.Beast - all destroyed by this tiny monster

catch flame into Flaming strike is a garunteed combo if you arnt facing someone with high poise plus itll most likley one shot most of the time if youre running the right build.Made this my main build and i have had nothing but fun watching all mages and all other builds burn to a crisp :) i think catch flame should be buffed though, more in range than damage
- Anonymous
This is unironically the best spell in the game. Sure the range is bad, but it comes out super fast, deals a ton of damage and costs little FP so it can be chained for as long as your stamina pool allows. Really good in PvP as well if you pay close attention to the spacing between your opponent, if you get it off at the right time you can easily staggerlock almost any build.
I love using this after hitting with a heavy weapon. Simple combo you can do with nearly any if not all builds hence the faith requirement
I want a black flame version of this. I wouldn't even care if the burn effect is halved for it. This one looks out of place in my black flame witch build. We all just want to look badass from tip to toe in pvp, don't we?

Carian slicer is 4 fp but this is 10. They should lower the fp cost of this spell.
- Anonymous
Basically the faith version of Carian Slicer. Powerful and reliable as hell.

I have not seen any comments on the fact that this incantation has a running and jumping attack which makes it absolut top tier in terms of utility!

Is this the new Meta? This thing can cast 4 times before a straight sword swing can land a hit and when combined with that flaming stike WA bullshit it’s almost damn near invincible.
- Anonymous
Way too good for a starter spells. It's fast, it's cheap, and it hits hard. Can't really go wrong in most situations.
- Anonymous
Suprisingly reliable and carried my prophet run well past stormveil. I was able to beat margit first try at level 15 by just popping him 5 times in a row then running away, rinse and repeat till dead :p
- Anonymous
Literally hits harder than every sword in the game and casts 10x faster, incantations op

Little lore speculation, but I throughout the souls franchise, when you're casting a spell, you're manifesting someone elses idea or power. What I find cool about these spells is that, if you start as a prophet, this spell and flame sling are actually made by yourself after having had a vision of the erdtree burning.
There might a mechanic I'm not understanding, but while it requires 8 faith to learn the incantation the lowest faith requirement seal is 10 faith, except a very late game one. Is there a way to cast it at 8 faith?
- Anonymous
I do think the stun on this should be slightly nerfed because sometimes you can land a 2 hit combo with 2 catch flames if you have fast enough cast speed.
- Anonymous
Dear FROM,
Where is Catch Black Flame? Did you remove it? Are you holding is back for DLC? Why would you do that? How cool would’ve it been if you used Catch Flame with Godslayer’s Seal it automatically made it Black Flames? Oh well, I guess.
- Anonymous
This spell along with Beastial swing can glitch out (and exploit) any spell with a secondary spammable animation (like honed bolt, dragon claw, magma, lightning strike etc) because the game treats that cast as if it were the secondary animation, thus removing a good 1 second from cast times of said above skills.
Wouldnt recommend doing it tho, not only will im sure it will get patched, its just a ***** move for the most part

"Parry this you filthy casual"
Seriously though, this thing is incredible to use along with something long and pokey. Something like a Banished Knight Halberd. It has range and poke attacks, but can't quite catch someone who rolls all around you. That's when this spell comes to rescue. Or when somebody pulls out the buckler, you unleash flame ball right into their face.

As of patch 1.04.1, Fromsoft secretly buffed this spell's damage by about 10% damage. But, the charged version by a crazy 30% increase. And yes Fromsoft is trying to gaslight us!!! Make us thinking we over look some ordinary spell by slowly buffing them!!!

I can’t tell if it’s a true combo, but casting this from the left hand flows very quickly and smoothly after 2 curved sword swings.
- Anonymous
I was thinking that catch flame and surge o, flame should be one incantation. Like the flame vent from Sekiro, specifically okinaga’s flame vent. “Surging catch flame” has a nice tone
- Anonymous
Found a glitch comboing this spell and Dragonclaw, it performs the same animation as comboing Magma Breath and deals full Dragonclaw damage but there's no visuals or sound to go with it

Where tf is the Godslayer version of this spell and O Flame in this game? Given the sheer volume of even the game's most obscure contents already being discovered either From straight up neglected to add it for no reason or it's so absurdly well-hidden somewhere in the game nobody will probably find it. Sorta dumb to think it's in upcoming dlc considering everything else that's already available and there's enemies that already use it

It's a bit sad that so many of the Incantations are so weak, I wish I could use more than four spells
- Anonymous
this can be used to exploit not having to cast as quickly for a few spells, my favorite are the magma spew and blackflame blade (it skips the first vertical animation and does the horizontal swing instead which is so much more useful to me.) That combined with having so much damage in the long run for bosses is really nice
- Anonymous
The only downside is that I have to French kiss every enemy I wish to ignite due to it's range. Apart from that, good spell, very potent, just make sure to brush your teeth after each use. Also best to avoid using this on animals, it's very hard to explain should someone see you.
- Anonymous
Unfortunately the best incantation in the game right here. This, lightning spear, and Ekzyke's Decay are all you need for 100% of situations. They really screwed faith in this game. I'm still trying to piece together a pvp bishop but it's very difficult. I hope they buff incantation speed. They buffed sorcories for basically no reason.
- Anonymous
Using flaming strikes full combi following into this is a very powerful combo I've come to find out. I wonder how efficient it would be with pvp
- Anonymous
It's pretty clear this is a subtle wink and a nod to Super Mario on the NES where you could also shoot fireballs.
- Anonymous
So apparently spamming this will stun lock you to death in pvp. Fun =/
- Anonymous
For a pure faith build, this is gonna be your best boss dps for anything that isn't resistant to fire. Unless you want to abuse rot breath, which also works on most things.
- Anonymous
I love how one of the best pyromancies is essentially a weaponized lighter
- Anonymous
why is this practically identical to carian slicer but costs %150 more fp?
- Anonymous
Its such a tiny flame, but can easily wreck bosses due to how fast you can cast it again and again
- Anonymous
Does anyone know if the godslayer flame version of this used by the blackflame monks is in game?
- Anonymous
I don’t know if it’s I tended or not, but at the moment catch flame instantly kills any mounted enemy, if you kill their mount with this incantation.
Happened to find that out after I killed the horse of a night cavalry at 50% HP with this incantation and they just instantly died.

Can cast this and immediately chain cast into that shotgun rock throw beast spell, which usually has a wind up time. I am assuming it works with other spells that can repeat cast, but haven't tested it.

Pretty much, the best magic spell that is possible to find in all early game.

i have 85 faith with godrick's rune popped, and it has turned out to be an AMAZING spell late game. currently, im using the Erdtree seal which gives an S scaling in faith and around 350 spell power boost and in about 5 seconds with golden vow. upon testing on the trolls up in the mountaintops, im able to get 7000+ damage out. insane burst potential with the only caveat being that you need to be in melee for it, which is fine for me because for pure faith, it's worth having a dedicated melee spell - catch flame being the one.
- Anonymous
This spell is amazing, I'm glad they made the regular Combustion spell good again like it was in DS1, and not just completely useless compared to its greater counterparts.
I'm using this on my STR character with just 10 faith and a slightly underleveled Clawmark seal and it's stupidly good, it's amazing for chasing low hp targets down since you can cast it while sprinting and it has a lingering hitbox, it's stupidly easy to rollcatch with if your enemy is spamming rolls, give it a try you won't regret it. Definitely the best chasing tool in the whole game for just 10 faith.

i bought the catch flame, currently in my memory slot but doesnt allow me to use? It looks faded in my memory slot and never comes to a clear piocture

Carian slicer does about the same dps and costs %60 less fp than catch flame. carian greatsword also costs the same as O, flame but is better in every metric besides speed. some of the fp costs in this game confuse me.
- Anonymous
People saying it ain't good but you can spam this spell in rapid succession. I've done 3/4 of a bosses health near instantly with this, so if you're going prophet just spam the ever living crap out of it.
- Anonymous
Didn't expect it to be good. The effect description really undersells it

Catch Flame has disgusting DPS potential with even a bit of Faith investment. Amazing spell on horseback as well so long as you can rub your face into your target. My go-to offensive spell for any enemy that isn't either super mobile/hard to hit or resistant to fire. Decidedly superior to O, Flame! due to its rapid chain-cast potential and the mobility that comes with it (as O, Flame! forces you to plant to cast it.) Plus, you get to channel your inner Mustang with the rapid snaps so it's just fun to use. Synergizes very well with summoned spirits that make for good distractions, like the wolves, as moving in while the enemy is staggering or turned away lets you burn your entire FP bar on this spell with ease.
Should go without saying that it's not as useful against smaller targets or hordes. It's particularly effective against the bosses of the Forlorn Hound and Weeping Evergaols, whom it's capable of shredding rapidly while they're emerging from the ground due to their lack of fire resistance.

why is this thing so good? 20 hours in and still my best incant and it's not even close

Does about 200 damage (less on armor) per cast as your starting incantation on Prophet and casts extremely quickly.
Nice to have a spell that hits so hard early in the game
