Even though it has no plate, it's one of the most realistic looking as it covers a lot of surface area while keeping you mobile and light. Instead of being restricting of vision or mobility with unguarded extremities and gaps.

Did they changed the appearance this set after 1.03? It looks different now if starting a new game
Match this up with Kaiden helm, exile gauntlets and greaves, highland axe, and any of the smaller kite shields, and you'll have yourself a good ol fashioned Varangian Viking look very early in the game.
