    • While at late game the damage is weak compare to ballista or jar cannon, it is still useful for sniping enemies while avoiding the tracking projectiles by hide behind buildings like the Erdtree Avatar inside the Hailtree city that is near the lift.

Crossbows are only handy for killing dragonflies and bats early on. The page enemy in Lyndell has the pulley crossbow dmg that I would like to have.

Yes, crossbows are for the most part garbage in ER. However, it looks so cool with confessor's default armor. Wear that. Plus a plain tasteful looking sword, this crossbow, dagger for crits. Some holy incantations on the side. You got yourself a badass vampire hunter/witch hunter/exorcist. Of course it would be better if more weapons were better balanced, but some clearly exist for flavor. And fashion beats stats anyway.

why does it have more base damage than the heavy crossbow un-upgraded, but falls behind it when fully upgraded?

            • If you are doing a crossbow only run you can technically pick this up without killing anything but then again you can just rob a grave for runes and buy light crossbow. However at least this one is actually much stronger at early upgrade levels, easy to upgrade with somber and comes with rot bolts so you can use those to easily kill margit and get the powerful arbalest which will last you until pulley or even full moon crossbow. Although Arbalest is still great to use for low tier ammo on regular enemies to conserve the good stuff for bosses.

you guys don't get it, the fact that you can get this so early, and that it comes with scarlet rot bolts, it's specifically a noob killer for early game stormveil invasions

I think a good way to use this would be to turn it into a mini-ballista as a stealth invader. equip both arrow talismans, RST, and Concealing Veil/FF Trick Mirror. Use Explosive Bolts and/or a status bolt(s) of your choosing, pump up your ARC. Once your enemy knows where you are, relocate. Probably won't kill anything, but great for trolling.

Not sure if this is accurate, but despite its base phy damage being 2nd highest, its last upgrade makes it the 2nd weakest single hitting crossbow, with the pully being the worst, but just hitting with 2/3 of its bolts surpases most of the crossbows & 3/3 makes it #1.

Thd black crossbow just ends up with extra range, which has its uses absolutely, but it falls behind kinda hard. Besides the 2 rangeing talisman can make up for range & power both ways.

Stays viable throughout the game, even if it's never really optimal. Best for pest control. Bats, rats, dogs. Sniping and pulling to avoid mobs and ambushes. Would be better of course if it had a unique weapon art. And if the ammo economy wasn't crap. 40 runes per bolt vs 20 for arrows? Crafted bolts have way less range and much higher damage dropoff than purchased bolts? Despite all that, I killed Radahn (pre-nerf) with this thing. Well, the summons probably did most of the work, I just made sure they stayed in the fight, got the occasional bleed proc on the boss, and was the one to deliver the final blow. Have continued using it for the rest of the game... though generally not in boss fights. Should you use this heavily? Probably not. Can you? Definitely!

After the patch, do bows and crossbows still not scale with dex/strength? Hard to believe that they haven’t changed that and it’s just all upgrades. Best to increase a stat and use the ammunition that goes with said stat? (Arcane for Posion and Blood etc.)

My go-to weapon for attacking the "crow-rex" in Mohgwyn palace. with the increased scoping range, it's a piece of pie to lock-on and fire on the horrid thing. easy pickings.

In terms of range, and physical damage per shot, without needing to rely on magical/status bolts, this is the best crossbow, plus it looks boss.

you can kill the Great Horn trumpeteer enemy at the end of Haligtree Canopy from afar with this weapon, use bleed bolt

Cheesed a bunch of tough enemies from far with this beauty. Collect some craftbooks, craft some good bolts and go ham.

                                • I usually always use a bow to do my minimal ranged damage in Souls games. This crossbow though has one thing going for it: Uses Somber stones. I found those a *lot* more common than being able to upgrade a weapon using Smithing stones. Great choice for when you aren't really focused on archery, but like to have it as an option.

This crossbow is capable of cheesing serval open area “boss fight”, dealing about 120 on dragonkin solder with +5 upgrade and Bolt purchased from merchants, so 99 Bolt is already a plenty. It is just that crafted bone bolts are suck.

Really good range and damage output and I just upgraded to +5. Plus it matches the symbol on the cape of the confessor set. Good for faith assassin cosplays imo

I found myself eager to use my key that I had stumbled upon at some unknown ruins. Went to the roundtable and saw the first statue, didn't think twice and the crossbow was mine. Keep in mind I'm a astrologer. I wont be upgrading stats just to use it. Hopefully it sells well.
