D, Hunter of the Dead is an NPC in Elden Ring. D is a hunter of the undead who can be found where the Tibia Mariner boss is located, and later at the Roundtable Hold. When you first encounter D, he will warn you that the nearby small town of Summonwater Village has been taken over by a Mariner. If the player shows him Deathroot and takes him up on his offer of introduction, he will mark your map with a red "Sending Gate" waypoint, indicating that it will take you to the Beast Clergymen.

I’m known as D. I hunt Those Who Live in Death, and weed their Deathroot.

D, Hunter of the Dead Location in Elden Ring

  • D, Hunter of the Dead can be found mourning a person dead at his feet in Stormhill, Limgrave. Here, he will warn you against going any further east towards Summonwater Village. [Map Link]
  • Defeating the boss in the village will then cause him to move to the southwestern entrance of Summonwater Village. [Map Link]
  • If not spoken to in the above location(s), D can subsequently be found at Roundtable Hold. There seem to be different triggers to this. After some testing it appears D moves after activating a Site of grace in the outer areas of Caelid, Dragonbarrow or Altus. Reaching Liurnia instead does not trigger him to move, nor just obtaining a Deathroot or going underground.
  • D can be summoned to help you fight the Black Knife Assassin in Black Knife Catacombs and the Tibia Mariner in East Liurnia.
  • This NPC moves.
  • This NPC can be fought (only possible when first meeting him in Limgrave).
  • If defeated, drops:

D, Hunter of the Dead Questline: How to complete D, Hunter of the Dead's Quest

  • D, Hunter of the Dead is first found in Stormhill, Limgrave, to the east of Stormhill Shack. Here, he will warn the player of "those who live in death", referring to the undead infestation of Summonwater Village
  • He can also be found in Roundtable Hold on your first visit, if you skip first step and defeat Godrick the Grafted or the Red Wolf of Radagon.
  • You should go to Summonwater Village and defeat the Tibia Mariner boss there, then return to D at the Roundtable Hold or rest at grace and find him by the southwestern entrance in the water of Summonwater Village to continue his quest. He will give you directions to the Bestial Sanctum in Caelid. You can teleport there without having to explore by going to the "Sending Gate" in East Limgrave. [Map Link]
  • Will become available as a merchant once the player has visited Gurranq. Player can return to Roundtable Hold and speak to D, who will give them a dialogue option; selecting "yes" will allow the player to purchase D's incantations.
  • During Rogier's quest line, a letter left to you by Rogier mentions that D has a younger brother, and hints at his location.
  • During Fia's and Rogier's quest line, you will be asked to find the owner of a particular Weathered Dagger. D is the owner. Give him the dagger and reload the area. Then, in a newly opened room in the back of the Roundtable Hold, you will find D's Bell Bearing and the Twinned Set.
  • You can find his twin brother just before the arena for the Valiant Gargoyle boss in Nokron. [Map Link] You will receive the Inner Order gesture upon interacting with him.
  • D's armor (unaltered) can optionally be given to his brother. If you do so, and then reload the area (none of the mobs you've killed will respawn), you can summon him for help with the gargoyles. In addition, he will appear again near the end of Fia's quest line. If you don't give him the armor, he will remain on the balcony where he was first encountered.
  • Alternatively, you can kill D at his first location and give the armor to his brother. After reloading the area or the game, D's brother will be aggressive to you and can be fought.
  • Moreover, only starting the Radahn festival is the trigger to make Fia give the player the Weathered dagger for D. This part of the quest cannot be completed after reaching Farum Azula. In that moment D's body will be automatically found in the closed room past Hewg and his drop can still be looted.

Dialogue in Elden Ring: D, Hunter of the Dead

Introduction at Roundtable Hold

  • "I don't believe we've met. I'm known as D. I hunt down Those Who Live in Death, and weed their Deathroot. Heed my warning. Those Who Live in Death should be left well alone. All the more, should you spy a mariner among their number. Unless you wish to lay down your life in vain."
  • (If previously spoken to in Limgrave) "Ah... we meet again. I'm glad you took my warning to heart. Those Who Live in Death should be left well alone. All the more, should you spy a mariner among their number."
  • "Those Who Live in Death should be left well alone. All the more, should you spy a mariner among their number."

Introduction at Limgrave

  • "There's no mistake, is there? Death has left its mark once again.
I'm sorry, I cannot give you your proper rites...
But at least you did not join Those Who Live in Death. Your soul will return to the Erdtree, in time.
Honeyed rays of gold, deliver this spirit."
  • (When spoken to) "Ah, a Tarnished, are you? I'm known as D. I hunt down Those Who Live in Death, and weed their Deathroot.
Heed my warning. The village here has been touched by Death.
And worse yet, it is home to a mariner. If you value your life, then go no further."
  • "The village here has been touched by death. Turn back, while you still can."
  • (When spoken to after obtaining Deathroot) "Ah, a Tarnished, are you? With a prowess for weeding Deathroot.
... I'm known as D. I hunt down Those Who Live in Death, and weed their Deathroot."
     (continues into Gurranq introduction dialogue)

When attacked

  • (Warning) <wince>
"Don't you dare. Unless you want to die like a dog?"
  • (Combat) "Very well. Honeyed rays of gold, deliver this spirit."
  • (On player kill) "I swear, there's a blight spreading amongst the Tarnished..."

When killed

  • "How could this... happen...?
    Forgive me, Devin... D-Devin..."

After showing Deathroot

  • "Well, well... Another fool who won't listen to reason, eh? But with a prowess for weeding Deathroot.
... How would you like to earn the strength of beasts? If you're inclined to hunt more of Those Who Live in Death, and weed their Deathroot, then I'll introduce you to Gurranq, the beast clergyman.
I have a matter of my own to attend to. And the beast himself wishes for someone to take my place. What say you?"
  • [Accept introduction] "Very well. Show me your map.
... I've marked the location for you. Of a hidden gateway. It will lead you to Gurranq, the beast clergyman."
(A red mark was made on the map)
  • "What is it? Still milling about? The map indicates where the gateway is hidden. It will lead you to Gurranq, the beast clergyman."
  • "I have a matter of my own to attend to.
(If still in Limgrave) I spotted the mark of the centipede here in the village.
(If in the Roundtable Hold) I've spotted the mark of the centipede.
An ill-omened symbol that should not be. Someone, or something, threatens the sanctity of the Golden Order. And must be eradicated."
  • [Decline introduction] "Well, all right, then. No sense in forcing you."
  • [Decline introduction, then talk] (If still in Limgrave) "What now? Had a change of heart?"
(If in the Roundtable Hold) "What's wrong? Got cold feet, have you?"

After accepting introduction, before meeting Gurranq

  • "Ah, hello again. You haven't gone to see Gurranq yet, have you?
Well, no rush. You do as you please.
Just as long as he doesn't starve to death, eh."
  • "Go to Gurranq only if you feel the time is right. Killing Those Who Live in Death and weeding their Deathroot...
Is a path not to be trod without ample resolve."

After meeting Gurranq

  • "You've met Gurranq, I take it? Then owing to our duties shared, we are now comrades-in-arms.
I think you've earned this. The power of the Golden Order, to aid the hunt of Those Who Live in Death."

Visit

  • "Ah, hello. You've been busy weeding Deathroot, I take it. I thank you, as your brother-in-arms.
So, what can I do for you?"
  • "Ah, hello there. What can I do for you?"
  • "Did you need something else?"

About D

  • "I serve the Golden Order. That I might put this crooked land to rights.
Following only the guidance of the great Elden Ring. Those Who Live in Death fall outside the principles of the Golden Order.
Their mere existence sullies the guidance of gold. Tainting its truth. And so it is the vermin must be exterminated... Down to the very last."

About Rogier

  • "Are you acquainted with a man named Rogier? You know, the piteous fellow hiding away on the balcony?
He was a formidable spellblade, in times past.
Don't let his easy air deceive you. He was wise beyond his years, stout of heart and clear of mind.
No more though. You see him now, ravaged by thorns, muttering and rambling...
Like he's half dead already. I can't stomach to watch. Take well the lesson, friend.
That's how you end up, when seduced by Those Who Live in Death. When grace is sullied, it rots people from the inside. Breaks them."

After showing Weathered Dagger

  • "Well, what have we here? How did you get your hands on that dagger? ...Well. That hardly matters. I know very well whose dagger it is. Why don't I return it to them for you? Good work, bringing this to me."

Elden Ring D Notes & Trivia

  • D, Hunter of the Dead's real name is Darian, as revealed by his twin brother after completing Fia's questline.
  • The name of D(arian)'s twin brother is Devin, as revealed by D(arian) if you kill him when first encountered in Limgrave.
  • D's name and occupation of hunting the undead is likely a reference to the title character of Vampire Hunter D, a series of Japanese light novels written by Hideyuki Kikuchi and illustrated by Yoshitaka Amano.
  • If provoked, D wields the Inseparable Sword and a sacred seal, which he uses to cast Beast Claw and Litany of Proper Death.

The stat requirements for stuff is not just in-game progression gating. There is lore in it, too. Let's look at D's role in the world and his associated equipment. D is a Hunter of the Dead, a Golden Order Fundamentalist dedicated to exterminating Those Who Live in Death to protect the 'sanctity' and 'purity' of Order. His unique sword scales strongly with Faith, and he teaches you the incantations that, of the Fundamentalist school, require the least intelligence. He is a zealot, mirroring Bloodborne's Executioner Alfred. Goldmask laments the current state of the Hunters of the Dead, rejecting their dogmatic opposition to Those Who Live in Death and their obsession with an absolute evil to contend with; Maliketh/Gurranq, too, is looking to replace D as his subordinate. The highest Fundamentalist incantations - the Laws of Regression and Causality - both require *only* intelligence. The Golden Order seal states that "Fundamentalism is scholarship in all but name." Basically, D's zealotry precluded him truly grasping the meaning of Order. But D was once companion to a scholar - Rogier - until their differences made them split. Opposite Golden Order, the other int/fth school of magic is Death sorcery. Rogier, a sorcerer, was keenly interested in Death, meeting his grim fate by investigating Godwyn's corpse in Stormveil. Eventually, he becomes a servant of Fia. But even in undead servitude, Rogier uses only intelligence sorceries, not the Death sorceries that Lionel can use. This suggests that Rogier was all curiosity, and no willingness to believe - the opposite of D. Rogier lacked the faith to cast Death sorceries.

In the questline section: "D, Hunter of the Dead is first found in Stormhill, Limgrave, to the east of Stormhill Shack."
That is such a strange reference point to choose, given how far he is from Stormhill Shack. His portion of the map isn't even Stormhill anymore.
The closest sites of grace to D's initial location are Saintsbridge to the west and Summonwater Village to the east. The "intended" route is to approach him from Saintsbridge.

So if I fight D at Limgrave then Fia will not be killed by D's brother and I can not fight fortisax and can not get Duskborn ending ?
Did I get it right guys ?

            • Anonymous

Also, I killed him on the first encounter, by accident. I was riding back and forth on cutting down the undead in the cemetery next to him, when I spot him, looking very similar like the knights/soldiers roaming around Limgrave. I smacked him from the horseback as well, and cutting him down in the next runs on the undead (and on him). Than I recognized his unique armor, and reading the info on them, realized, I just killed an NPC. Sincere apologies, but thankfully used his armor from than on. :)

So, if I don't kill D before he goes to Roundtable Hold, Fia will always be killed if I complete the quest?

I think it’s interesting, in Rogier’s Letter he mentions D has a “younger” brother, despite them being twins. Presumably Darian was the first one out the womb. He’s the gold one (grace is gold) while his brother is the silver one. I wonder if this first twin/second twin comes into play more, for example was Morgott first born and gold, while Mohg was 2nd born and silver? What about Malenia and Miquella? Interestingly miquella has both silver and gold as colors, referencing the St Trina and Miquella lilies respectively. Just spitting a bit, if someone has some deeper knowledge would love to hear it.

Something neat I noticed about this guy, is the unique idle animations he has in relation to his set’s twinned heads. In a way, I think the distinct aspects of the set, correlate to one of the two twins. I mean, of course it does symbolically, it’s called the “twinned set” and throughout the game it’s worn by two twin brothers, but I mean in a more literal sense. When we first meet him in the round table hold, the golden, main head looks at us as we speak, so we can assume Darian is the golden one, while the silver head is covering its eyes, which I feel is meant to represent Devin who is currently cowering in Nokstella. But when Devin is given the set and kills Fia, he has a weird posture when we find him, holding his sword in a display of bloodlust, while he leans back in an odd way. But how he leans makes the silver head seem upright, like it’s more in control than the gold one. Of course, this is all just nitpicking barely noticeable details of a cool npc, so don’t take any of this seriously, it was just a thought.

Note that you do NOT need to reload the area for his brother's summon sign to appear. Reloading the area just makes his brother vanish from the balcony, his summon sign appears when you give him the armor.

                      • Anonymous

So, he left the Roundtable at some point but I didn't see him at the Gargoyles when I first arrived there. I also got the letter from Rogier but didn't go search for his twin brother. After completing the game I was checking around randomly and found D outside of the Gargoyles arena, where I could give him the armor set. He was mumbling something incomprehensible (I think he was moaning his dead brother?) and after reloading the area he was gone. Went to Fia's Champions arena where I picked up the Rune from Fias dead body (guess I missed it before...) and after reloading the area he was standing near her dead body, being happy about the "witch finally dead!". Reloaded the area again and could pick back up the armor set plus the Inseparable Sword.

                        • So... I killed Darian in Limgrave. My intention? To save Fia. I figure if I kill Darian myself when I get the chance, that'll make Devin attack me when I return his brother's armour, right? So I get to kill Devin early too... so he won't get to kill Fia. The only problem with this is that after reaching Altus Plateau / Redmane Festival... Fia seems to have just disappeared. No Weathered Dagger, no opening of the back room. I hope she has gone to Deeproot instead of just vanishing from the game. I'll be mighty annoyed if killing the D-heads breaks Fia's questline.

D sorry my man but i had to kill your brother, it ain't personal. I NEED that inseparable sword for my greatsword collection.

Upon my first gameplay, I was nervous about anything I have encountered so far in the game. After making my way across the bridge and meeting the huge pumpkin head guy, I made my way past him and the merchant. Off in the distance though, I saw a strange looking fellow looking quite intimidating out in the open space like that. (I thought to myself, I am going to get the first attack if this person attacks me) So I snuck up behind this character and started attacking the crap out of this guy. I attacked him so perfectly, I was landing all my hits, I parried both attacks he used on me, and avoided the holy attacks he summons. Then I got this whole set of cool looking armor. It was not until later in the game that I found out that this guy was a NPC.... hahaha whoops

You can also summon him for the tibia mariner in summonwater village. Ive done it once, and so have a few friends. But only the once. Neither of us have *ever* seen the sign or gotten it to spawn ever since. Anyone know anything?

Couldnt you also summon D while fighting the Gargoyle twins at the aqueduct after giving the NPC the armor right befor the arena?

I didn't have to reload after giving D's brother the Twinned Armor. The summon symbol appeared right away. Maybe a patch fixed that?

I liked Fia more before I realized she was going around sleeping with promising Tarnished, killing them and enslaving their spirit.

This guy can be killed by nearby monsters where you first find him. They won't aim for him directly, but keep in mind that he won't fight back if he gets hit by them. If you want to kill him indirectly it's great, but if you want to keep him alive clear out the nearby graveyard first.

D and Fia both believe they’re doing the right thing. Those Who Live In Death are victims of circumstance who just want to live. D wants to uphold the Golden Order, for accepting him when he and his brother were deemed freaks. Fia accepts those whom D and the Golden Order deem freaks, ironically.

No “bad guy” here. Just people with opposing convictions.

If you skip Fia's quest by going to Deeproot and beating her champions and Fortissax there, D will appear after and he'll have killed Fia.

A lot of themes and NPCs in this game have direct parallels in Dark Souls. D's is less obvious, but he is this game's Twin Princes, cursed souls intertwined into one. When D (Lorian) dies, the other D, who is found feeble and helpless in simple cloth robes (Lothric), "resurrects" him by donning his armor and taking up his sword.

                                                      • Anonymous

3 times through the game, never discovered him near Summonwater. This game should have a marker for NPCs.

He may have been extreme in his beliefs to an obsessive degree but he genuinely meant well, offering advice, summons and even an introduction to the beast clergyman. Not to mention his reverence for those who were unfortunate to be killed by the undead. A shame we didn't get to interact more with him. Honeyed rays of gold, deliver this spirit.

People talk about Darian, Hunter of the Dead, and Devin, Beholder of the Dead-

But what about Jerren, Bringer of Death?

When i first started my journey I didn't know he was a good guy npc so I killed him for his shoes. Then on the second playthrough I killed him cause I'm a monster lol.

                                                                  • Anonymous

You can find his summon sign in the middle of the road that leads to the pond from the broken bridge. I wouldn’t bother, it just makes the fight longer without torrent.

                                                                    • Anonymous

He's only helpful to you the entire time (although he doesn't have *the best* incantations to offer), leading you to Gurranq and being available as a summon for two fights (maybe more). I've seen some people saying he butchered the lady in front of the Tibia Mariner's village, but he literally says "Death has left it's mark again", and then mentions at least she never became an undead, and offers condolences.

On the other hand you have Fia, who does help notable people (Such as Rogier and the Onion Boi himself) but she is obsessed with helping those who live within death, which need you be reminded, are all hostile to you.

                                                                      • Anonymous

I love how it specifically says you can summon d as a NPC summon for the very first mariner. But offers no location for the sign. Anyone know where it is?

                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                          • Anonymous

Where is D located if you never gave him the dagger and you already have the ashen capital, NG++ so didnt see any point in giving it to him again, was hoping i could keep him alive or give dagger to his brother. but not sure if hes alive or not, or if he relocated.

                                                                            • For those wanting to cosplay as D, he uses the inseparable sword and twinned armor set and he uses the Beast Claw incantation. His twin brother uses the same weapon and armor, but uses the Litany of Proper Death and Discus of Light incantations in case you want to combine the two. When he kills Fia, he has a golden aura around him and I am uncertain if it is Golden Vow or Blessing's Boon/Blessing of The Erdtree. I would just use both to be safe.

                                                                              • About half the time he's available for the Tibia fight in Lurnia, and half the time he's not. It doesn't seem to be based on talking to him at the roundtable. Any idea what the trigger is for his summon sign to be available there?

                                                                                • Anonymous

I dont know the conditions, but you can summon D for the double gargoile fight. At that point I already defeated Maliketh and I had D's Bell Bearing, but not his armor (so I didnt give it to his twin). Its a bit weird.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

It is heavily implied that D is an incel and tried to bed Fia, but she turned him down. He even gave a dagger to her in an attempt to win her over. Maybe that's why he hunts the dead. Smh what rejection does to a mf.

                                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                                      • Just a heads up, I'm pretty sure D will despawn near summon water if Melina suggests going to roundtable hold... even if you don't actually take her up on it.

                                                                                        Just happened to me.

I think this is new- now D shows up at Fia’s death in Deathroot

After completing her quest, go give the armor to D’s brother. Then go to Prince of Death’s Throne site of grace.

He will be standing over her corpse with a lot of new dialogue. He even calls her a whore

Forgive me if this is old and just not on the wiki. But maybe the new patch added it?

                                                                                          • Anonymous

I was invaded by d the hunter upon traveling to the roundtable hold late in the game. Did the questline up to the sending gate, as well as defeated all tibia mariners. Not sure what other requirements I met but i see no info on this here or the npc invader page.

                                                                                            • Anonymous

I love his rant after he kills Fia, first time hearing "whore" in a Fromsoftware game. It's also definitely a reference to Alfred's rant after he slew the Queen of Cainhurst.

                                                                                              • Anonymous

This absolute chump teaches garbage spells. Despite being a Golden Order incantation user, he doesn't use them to cure himself of Death Blight and gets killed by Fia's Mist in Roundtable Hold, where no fighting can happen any way. Cool armor, lame character. Also, he shows up AFTER you kill the Tibia Mariner. D, your whole personality is "I HATE UNDEAD" why can't you help out?

                                                                                                • If you want a early Heavy Armor set and don't plan on using his incantations, just kill him. The only draw back is you miss out on a summon for 1 fight thats a little rough but you get a cool looking and protective set for much of your early game run.

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

I just found D at the end of Fia's Questline. He was gloating over her corpse, then after exhausting the dialogue and re-loading the area he was gone and the armor set was dropped.

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

It says you can summon him for the Black Knife Catacombs boss fight, but I've progressed his, Rogier, and Fia's questlines as far as I can and still don't see his summon sign. He is still alive in my game, not sure why I can't summon him tho.

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

It seems like the recent change to this article's name (and the NPC associated with it) is a mistake. D, Beholder of Death is the brother of the main "D," i.e, D, Hunter of the Dead. This article is about the main NPC who ends up at the Roundtable Hold, not the brother in Deeproot Depths.

Just to be clear in case it gets changed back, at the time I'm writing this, the article is titled "D, Beholder of Death," and that's how D is referred to throughout the article.

                                                                                                        • Spoilers ahead:

Is it implied that D has been consumed with Deathroot? When looking at his corpse at the end of his questline he has black thorns spewing out of his armor. This would suggest one of three things?

                                                                                                          1. He was ridden with Deathroot.

                                                                                                          2. Fia killed him somehow?

                                                                                                          3. Or that he had some type of misfortune delivering the weathered dagger to whomever it "belonged" to. He let's out a drawn out sigh when you give him the item.

Anyone want to elaborate on this at all? I am genuinely stumped
