      Unfortunately this sword is doodie. I have 99 INT/60STR/60DEX and this sword is simply outclassed by every other build I have done. Very much regret respecing for this sword. Carian Knight Sword does better melee and AoW damage... and is very easy to get. For the work require for this sword, it needs to be better. I love the sword itself and the idea of it.. but it just underperforms. You either spend most of the fight running around trying to get enough space to charge the blade and get casts off or end up trading damage with the bosses. They need to make the effect of this blade permanent and cost FP or increase the melee damage it is capable of. Then it would be worthwhile as either a good AoW sword or good melee sword with a decent ranged option. Very, very disappointed with this sword overall.

                this is simply the best pve weapon in the game after all the buffs. They addressed literally every complaint about the weapon.while keeping the high damage output.. The moonbeams still do a ton of damage for essentially 0 FP cost. I can't believe it's not being discussed and used more. I guess because the moonbeams aren't very useful in pvp duels.

                  For some reason I can't reply to other people, but I can confirm what another commenter said about the second attack in the one handed R1 attack chain doing significantly less damage that the other three hits

                  Tested on the sleeping Albinaurics in Mohg's area with no damage buffs or talismans

                      This is the same BlueMoon Greatsword from DS2. Benhart of Jugo is an ancestor of the Carian Royal Family as this weapon is specifically stated to be a family heirloom passed down generations — as it is a gift when the Queen marries

                        I've noticed a mild bug with this weapon, in that the second swing in the 1H R1 string does SIGNIFICANTLY less damage than the first, third, or fourth swings. I am unsure if this affects other greatswords or, god forbid, was intentional.

                            Definitely a solid option or better yet the most definite go to when doing an intelligence build NOT leaning into dexterity.
                            The buff is priceless. It might be telegraphed and easy to read in pvp but in pve this is a fatty and boss killer

                                      Some int skills damage against nox in Nokstella NG+ (60 int+ shard):
                                      - uncharged beam: 960
                                      - charged beam: 1481
                                      - charged + godfrey icon: 1700
                                      - moonveil WA R1 beam: 889

                                      - moonveil WA R2 beam: 984
                                      - moonveil WA R2 beam+blade: 1428

                                      Overall all 3 are very strong. Moonveil is the quickest and easiest to land, carian grandeur is the strongest but shorter range and charging takes time. Darkmoon is strong, has good range, medium speed - usually you can use it safely but enemies programmed to dodge can be quick enough to avoid it. Big advantage for darkmoon is 0 fp cost after initial buff and frost buildup.

                                        I don't know why so many comments are saying this is bad. Sure it has a high int requirement which, admittedly, is one of the steeper stat requirements for a weapon, but it doesn't really matter for several reasons

                                        1. By the time you get it, you have enough runes just from killing the stuff in the questline to use it even if you rushed there right from the start. For a non cracked player though, this is a mid-late game weapon in terms of availability. Which means you probably have even more runes to get the stats for it

                                        2.You'd probably invest that many points into int anyway for almost any build using it. Probably far more honestly. The int scaling isn't bad despite what some might try to say

                                        3. You can still use this weapons at low levels because Elden ring is very generous in terms of stat buffing equipment. There's a whole archetype of dumb looking helmets that can increase int, one of which gives 6 int. Marika's soreseal gives another 5. Stargazer gives another 5 as well. Considering this you need a whopping 3 levels of strength and 6 levels of int to wield this as an astrologer (if you're using godricks greatrune, you literally need 1 level in int). I'm not saying this build is good or optimal, what i'm saying is that you have options. This does sound like a funny glass cannon build though tbh

                                        4. (sidenote): The damage isn't bad at all. I don't know where this idea came from. It deals good damage and can even inflict frostbite as a nice bonus which is a great debuff in this game even if you don't spam it with fire frostbite settups


                                        I am a pve player, I don't know much about pvp in elden ring other than people raging at RoB, so I don't know how good this is in pvp. But considering how vague all the comments are here, I almost wonder whether some of these people have played the game at all. In pve atleast, this weapon is actually really good

                                        TLDR: Pontiff knight curved sword is a weapon available in dark souls 3. You can get it easily by completing one step of greyrat's quest and buying it from him for 6k souls

                                                  The lasers just barely miss in pvp when locked on if they roll, so you need to learn how to free aim it, but when you do it is absolutely devastating to get hit by. Averages around 1000+ damage on most people with Shard of Alexander on at 80 Intelligence. Probably the best greatsword in the game, it just has a high skill floor and ceiling as landing those free aim hits is vital.

                                                    Kinda disappointed in the damage. Like you can get 1k with the R2 pretty commonly. But just attacking with heavy/lights has like a (672) 335/335 split (@min/max 16/11/52). So 20% resistance enemies ur hitting like 270/270.

                                                    And there’s no meaningful way to up damage except with tear for 20% magic, so 270/330.


                                                    A Moonveil hits just as high, with faster attacks and can proc bleed. All you need is frost spells or frost katana and you’ll get a better magic weapon. Can even use milicent tali to up physical damage instead of Godfrey 15% on only charged skill.

                                                        The projectile breaks troll's posture behind Godrick's arena in 2 charged hits which is same as two charged hits from colossal weapons/swords. Even the uncharged projectiles break his posture in 4 hits don't know if it's intended to be this op.

It's destroys everything in PvE. In PvP landing R2s can be somewhat tricky but if you do you can basically insta win a fight

Do not let this mislead you into thinking there are a great multitude of Moonlight Greatswords in existence. A closer inspection into the lore, there has only been two Moonlight Greatswords in ER. The first was the one which was given by Rennala to Radagon the Renegade, who would later transform it into the Golden Order Greatsword. The second is the one which Ranni gives to the Tarnished Lord upon their marriage, if her questline is done within a playthrough. Ranni's is also special since her affinity is with the frigid Dark moon, not the Moon that was discovered by Rennala in her youth.

Looks wonderful too with the buff active on ps5. My only three complaints are that 1) wish the blade was longer and thinner 2) it used the more refined looking moveset of the (banished) knight's greatsword 3) game became a bit too easy after acquiring this

                                                                    Perhaps a "weaker" reincarnation of the MLGS.
                                                                    The BB version needs to buff, but it's a 'toggle' instead of a timed buff (that players have to re-apply) like this one.
                                                                    DS3 and BB have the best versions of the MLGS yet: DS3's has a cool thrust attack and BB's has the coolest entrance for a weapon.
                                                                    I guess the Frostbite is the compensation.

                                                                    I recognize that each version in different worlds is made to be different, but this version seems quite underwhelming that I have to re-buff it every 60s.

                                                                        Cool weapon, if you've levelled INT to 38. I'm at leyndell I managed to kill the golden shade boss and I'm done. I can't be bothered with any of the bosses I have left, and I don't see any point in ranni's quest to be rewarded with a greasword I'm never going to use because of the INT requirement. I compare elden ring to bloodborne and it only proves that quality is better than quantity.

                                                                        • The scaling from Str and Dex is the exact same. Meaning, AR of 40/20 = AR of 20/40. So it literally doesn't matter. You pick the one that better fits the rest of your build.
                                                                          In case you don't care, then even split between Str and Dex is actually slightly better than focusing on one.

                                                                          • The comments claiming that the charged R2 projectiles are boosted by the Axe Talisman are either false or obsolete (interesting that one of them is from the current 1.05 patch). I just tested the charged R2 projectiles (both 1handed and 2handed to be thorough) on soldiers at the Gatefront. The Axe Talisman does not modify the damage in any way as long as the Ash of War is active, even if you hit point blank with it. It will however add the usual damage to your non-buffed charged R2 swings.

                                                                              -The unbuffed heavy attacks don't differ from the buffed heavy attacks
                                                                              -The buff doesn't last as long as it should
                                                                              -The buffed heavy attacks are more often than not dodged by enemies, making them damn near useless in endgame areas
                                                                              -The split attack rating should've been more magic-heavy, as it would've greatly benefitted from it's magic scaling
                                                                              -Despite being the Moonlight-freaking greatsword, it only get B in Int scaling
                                                                              -You get it so late in the game that by the time you get it it'll be outclassed by a Magic-infused Longsword in terms of utility and moveset, as well as selectable AoW.

                                                                                west of the converted tower in liurnia, at the bottom of the north west corner of moonlight plateau. you can jump up the cliff a little and kill yourself with bloody slash to respawn at the stake of marika on the plateau. it doesn't seem like you actually need the ring to interact with ranni's body for the sword. When I picked it up, it played the cutscene for the end of ranni's quest but seluvis is still alive

                                                                                    Incredibly high AR among all the greatswords, and it gets buffed further by the weapon's skill. And you get laser beams.

                                                                                      In my opinion this is not a weapon for melee combat; it's a weapon for sorcerers to use against weak trash enemies without wasting FP. The projectile actually does a lot of damage and costs *zero* FP; you just spend 32 FP (or 24 FP with the talisman you get from Iji) to energize the weapon for a minute and get free projectile attacks during that time, and you can always offhand the Sacrificial Axe (4 FP per kill) and/or just equip the ancestral talisman (3 FP per kill) to quickly get back all of that FP.

                                                                                      I did testing with this weapon and was surprised how high its projectile damage is. At +0 with 75 int, and a +10% magic talisman I forgot to unequip, it did 242 damage to the stagecoach trolls in Limgrave and usually 290 damage to most enemies. At +7, and with all talismans removed (so more realistic numbers), it did 1009 damage to those trolls, and at +9 it does 1266 damage to them, and around 1400+ damage to most other enemies.

                                                                                      By contrast, Great Glintstone Shard only does 591 damage to the trolls using a +9 Crystal Staff, and it costs 12 FP. The weapon's attack does have a bit less range than GGS and obviously fires more slowly since you have to do a charged attack, but really it's an awesome weapon for those situations when you have a lot of enemies to kill, flask recharges are rare or nonexistent (such as Shaded Castle), and you're not built for melee. It also looks awesome, glowing even when not energized.

                                                                                      But I don't think this is a good weapon for actual melee combat.

                                                                                        • Well boys, the projectile y axis tracking has finally been fixed and I immediately realized how little I actually needed that, considering I play very up close and aggressive, usually in my lefthand powerstanced with deaths poker. But congrats to everyone who wanted to be a gunner with it.

                                                                                          • I haven't tried the Bloodborne one but got to PvP with it in all three Dark Souls games. It was always considered a good weapon for high intelligence characters and it looked cool, but I've never liked those versions THIS much.

                                                                                            I love the frost addition to the sword, it only makes sense a weapon that gets it's power from the moon itself would freeze where it touches. Ever since DS3 introduced frost as a status, I've thought of that. And they nailed the design too, it looks COLD.
                                                                                            Only thing I don't like about the weapon is the R2 attack being the same with and without the buff. When the buff is active, it makes sense you raise the sword up before shooting the beam to get some power or whatever, but why does it have the same animation on it's default form? They could've made it so the normal R2 would have a vertical/thrust attack and with the buff it'd change to horizontal beams, the same way 'War Cry' works. If not that, at least remove the sword raise animation on normal R2 attacks, it just makes it unnecessarily slow.

                                                                                            Well, nonetheless, it works wonders. Just don't forget to slap a 'Godfrey Icon' and 'Shard of Alexander' on top of that.

                                                                                              The patch fixed freeaiming, but it almost feels like locking on misses as much or more because the lock-on reticle is often too close to the floor. So unless you're kissing an enemy, the laser has a pretty good chance of firing into the floor before it ever gets to them. Still, probably an improvement overall. It's nice to be able to freeaim properly now, if nothing else.

                                                                                                Its been a good while since I played dark souls or bloodborne, and bloodborne may not be relevant to what I'm asking anyway, as there wasn't really an option to make a sorcerer build, the arcane stat was related to hunter tools like the flame sprayer or the notorious call beyond used by micolash, there were no spells in the traditional sense. I may not be remembering this correctly, but I can't recall dark souls having a greatsword, a heavy weapon, needing such a big investment in INT before even being able to pick it up. Is this something new to Elden Ring? I can't remember anyone running a sorcerer, either invading or cooperating, using a heavy weapon like this one. The dark moon greatsword is obviously intended for use by sorcerer builds, quality, dex, or str melee builds, even hybrid melee builds that use some magic, would not have invested in INT to the level needed for this sword. Anyone else remember for sure, one way or the other?

Still doesn't "track" in flight, but so far no more whiffs when the target is not lined up at 0 or 45 degrees up or down.

                                                                                                  Also, it feels like this sword is a smidge faster. If so, it is a slight increase. This could also be placebo affect due to my excitement over seeing the beams working properly.

Hurts particularly since the Wing of Astel lets you precisely aim the heavy attack projectiles to anywhere you can move the camera. They should also speed up the heavy attacks as well.
