Deathbird is a recurring Boss in Elden Ring. Deathbird is a bipedal bird with arms and a bird skull for a head and is found in various locations. They share a close resemblance with the Death Rite Bird but are typically weaker than their larger winged cousins. This is an optional boss as players do not have to defeat it to advance in Elden Ring.

The Deathbirds are graveyard fire keepers; it is said they rake out the ashen remains of the dead from their kilns.

Deathbird Combat Information

  • Health: NG (??), NG+ (??), NG++ (??), NG+3 (??), NG+4 (??), NG+5 (??), NG+6 (??), NG+7 (??)
  • Deals Standard Damage, Pierce Damage and Magic Damage. May also inflict Frosbite.
  • undead icon 40px Undead type
  • Parriable: No
  • Can have its stance broken, allowing for a critical attack. Poise: 120.
  • Weak spot: Head

Absorptions:

The absorption numbers are the % of your damage that gets blocked. For example if an absorption is 60. 40% of that damage by that type will go through and 60% is absorbed. Bigger number= less damage. An absorption of 100 means no damage goes through, and a resistance of -100 mean the enemy takes 2x damage from that source. 0 means damage goes pretty much as is.

Resistances:

The resistance numbers is the buildup amount to trigger it. For example if a resistance is 100 you must deal 100 points of whatever aux buildup to trigger it. Note that these go down over time, and increase each time the effect procs.

Deathbird Fight Strategy

The Best Tips for Deathbird:

  • You can get a quick kill on the Deathbird east of the Hermit Merchant's Shack by luring it off of the cliff towards the east of the encounter.
  • Holy Water Pot does massive damage (7 pots were enough to kill it in Capital Outskirts on NG).
  • No summons allowed.
  • Use the ?? Spell
  • Bring ?? Item

Melee Users

As a melee user, the best way to fight the Deathbird is to stay close to its hind legs, time your dodges and get a few swings in after every attack.

Magic and Ranged Users

As a magic and ranged user, usually it would be recommended to fight this enemy on horseback while you're keeping you're distance casting spells and shooting arrows or bolts, but fighting this enemy on horseback is not advisable. The Deathbird can leap and cover a great distance when it sees you moving far away, it's cane also has a long reach that even when torrent is at full speed, it could still clip you. You could still opt for the option of fighting this boss on horseback, it is definitely doable, but it would be very difficult and might take longer than usual.

Still, try to keep your distance so you have time to draw your bow or cast spells, but don't get to far, try to be just outside the range of its swings.

Deathbird Attacks & Counters

Attack Description Counter
Poker Thrust Pulls up the poker before performing a thrust forward, plunging the ground. Dodge roll away or through the thrust.
Poker Sweep Lifts the poker up on its right hand, then immediately performs a sweep. Dodge roll through the sweep.
Poker Thrust and Pull Plunges its poker to the ground, then pulls it, creating a shockwave. When it plunges its cane to the ground, dodge roll away to avoid the shockwave from when it pulls its poker back.
Peck An attack where it pecks you if you're constantly hanging below its legs. Best way to counter this is to roll through and behind it, the peck won't reach you once you're behind the Deathbird, from there you can maybe land a couple of hits.
Leaping Slam Jumps into the air before performing an overhead slam. This move will reposition the Deathbird once the overhead slam hits the ground, you can dodge roll through the slam, just make sure to time it correctly because getting hit deals massive damage.
Sweep and Slam Does to full swings horizontally, then ends with an overhead slam. Dodge roll through the first to swings, then dodge roll to either side when the overhead comes in.
Two-Handed Slam Holds the poker with two hands, before slamming it to the ground. Once you see the Deathbird two-hand the poker, get ready to dodge roll away, you can roll under the Deathbird and get behind it, this way the shockwave from the slam won't hit you and you can land a few attacks at the same time while it's in recovery animation.
Death Screech Releases a scream up to two times, dealing small amounts of damage and building up Death Blight

This attack does minimal damage but can quickly build up Blight if you're not careful. Move away once it screams.

Please do yourself and your sanity a favor and never fight these without Sacred Blade AoW. It's easy to get, easy to spam, and melts them like crazy. Holy pots are good, but you only have so many, and considering how much the birds jump around, it's not worth it to throw a limited use item with no tracking. Also, the late game birds are so tough, that you will have a seriously hard time killing them with just pots.

      • Anonymous

I ended up coming back to the one in Leyndell Outskirts after getting the Blade of Calling, and using that AOW with a faith/holy-boosting Physick made this fight easy peasy

        • Anonymous

Holy water pots do a good job on these, but they do scale to FTH so I don't know how well if you don't have levels put into it. A word of caution though the death rite bird at consecrated snowfield will not melt to the holy water pots, it will kill you long before you can take advantage of its weakness to holy damage, try ekzykes's decay instead if you have it.

The death rite bird at mountaintop of the giants can be cheesed, if you follow the cliff edge looking down at castle sol west until it spawns then make a quick getaway for it to lose agro you will be able to get to a position above it to throw the holy water pots down on it and kill it pretty quickly, I had 45 FTH though. The giant purple skeleton the tibia mariner summons was bugged for me, it was there every time long after I'd killed the mariner if its the same for everyone its worth killing it before getting near the area where the death rite bird spawns, fighting both is going to be a headache.

I have the red feathered branch sword but I only remember killing the death rite bird closer to the raya lucaria academy. Does the bird at leyndell outskirts spawn in an area where the dead rise when you get close enough? If they are, will the bird still spawn if I clear the area of those skeletons and just wait until it gets to night? or do I have to trigger the fight straight from a grace checkpoint?

            • Anonymous

Jus saying, the giants next to the first deathbird spawn in limgrave apparently do crazy damage to the bird.

The thing had to have had at least a third of its HP left when one of the giants just finished it off...

I am going to have a stroke with how many people not knowing the difference between Deathbirds and Death Rite Birds. It's literally on the boss bar

                • Anonymous

The one at Leyndell spawned once, killed me then never spawned again.. I want that twinbird kite shield so bad :(

Idk if anyone has realized but there seem to be two different pages for this enemy? Deathbird and Death Rite Bird

                    • Anonymous

One Deathbird is due south from the 'Gate Town North' site of grace not more than 50 paces, just past a sunken building with a tall spire, east of the Raya Lucaria academy.

Your missing the Death Birds East of Apostate Derelict in Mntn of Giants. Also the one next to the graveyard where the giant ghost skeletons spawn. Also Mntn of Gnts

This doesn't mention the one in the Consecrated Snow Fields.

At the very north of the river, near the cliff edge.

The limgrave one...sure, let me just fight 3 bats, 2 trolls, 5 goats and a ****ing deathbird simultaneously at level 15

Got ambushed by one of these things in Stormhill. Immediately pecked to death. Came back and sent it to hell with Holy Water.

There are 8 death birds + 2 in Frost Mountains zone, 2 in Liurnia, 1 Limgrave, 1 Weeping Peninsula, 1 Capital OutSkirts and 1 Caelid- Use Holy attacks or grease and easy game.

If you're wanting the Sacrificial Axe early, grab the Sacred Blade Ash from the scarab north of the Third Church of Marika. The holy ranged attack will deal a huge chunk lot of damage. Being weak to both holy and strike, putting the ash on Morning Star will probably net you an easy win.

At least for the Liurnia one; It has a leap back, scream, into a lunge/grab combo that is 1HKOing me. Doesn't seem to be on its movelist

Missing the deathbird south east of Southern Aeonia Swamp Bank in Caelid, drops the Ash of War; Poison Moth Flight for early game poison arcane builds.

                                          >strong against lightning, thrust

So that's why my lightning estoc was struggling even when overleveled. How... specific.

                                          • I had some difficulty at first, however he is very weak to holy damage. Lock onto his body and not his head, get as close as possible to limit his moveset and just mash away with a sacred weapon keeping an eye on his head for peck attacks. I infused an Uchigatana with Sacred Blade for fairly extreme damage.

                                            • Anonymous

Get a random weapon and put Shared Order on it. That way you can switch back to your main weapon and have Holy damage on it. Easy 5-6k per hit with Blasphemous Blade L2.

this thing randomly showed up while i was grinding a area. since it hadnt appeared before suddenly seeing a boss hp bar in a area i hadnt seen a boss in before scared me

Of course you can kill it pretty easily with some kind of magic that he is weak to. But as someone who enjoy melee, the camera locks on his head which is too high so 80% of your hit misses. He's too fast to fight unlocked but it's the only way. Keeps getting out of HUD. Defenitly made to fight with magic. Dissapointing.

                                                  • Anonymous

i kid you not, grab the sacred blade from the limgrave church put it on your weapon and you can kill any one of these damn things. i went from doing 60 dmg with a mace to around 200-300 per hit with the buff active. damn ridiculous

                                                    • Anonymous

These are extremely vulnerable to anything that has a bonus vs 'Those Who Live in Death'.

I was able to hit 3k+ damage consistently with an Inseparable Sword +7 using it's Sacred Blade ash of war, at base level stats for the sword.

The ash of war should have a strong effect on all weapons. If you're struggling with these enemies you can get the ash of war just north of the Third Church of Marika from a scarab beetle.

                                                      • Anonymous

Wrong item for the lake bird, it gives the red feathered branch sword talisman when killed
The death rite bird just up north gives the spell

                                                        • By the way, there are two kinds of deathbirds: the regular ones (from this page) and death rite birds. The latter are on a separate page. Some of y’all are commenting “additional” locations but really you’re talking about death rite birds

                                                          • Anonymous

I definitely fought this on the Mountaintop of the Giants, right before that section with all the giant ghost skeletons.

There is also one in Caelid, just up a hill to the mostly east slightly south of the Southern Aeonia Swamp Bank grace, it drops a greatsword called deaths' poker, with a unique weapon art and 65 frost buildup

                                                              • There is another deathbird by the site of grace "castle sol main gate" in the mountain top of giants. I haven't beaten it as it spawns with a ton of those laser beam skeleton guys and was more focused on the castle anyways

                                                                • I didn't record this as well as I figured this site would know, but I guess I know something you guys didn't for once. There is a deathbird in the consecrated snowfields at the end of the frozen river bed in the northeast past the walking mausoleum (closest site of grace: apostate derelict). it drops 300k runes and a spell "Explosive Ghostflame" (attribute requirement: Int:42, Fai:30; Slots used: 1; FP Cost: 36) (item effect: "causes ghostflame explosion that burns wide area" (the grammar is their's, not mine))(Description: "Socery of the servants of Death. \n Strike the ground with the staff, triggering an explosion of ghostflame that burns the surrounding area. \n In the time when there was no Erdree, death was burned in ghostflame. Deathbirds were the keepers of that fire.")

                                                                  • Anonymous

It drops the Death's Poker as actually stated on its page : https://eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com/Death's+Poker

                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                          • Anonymous

I used this strategy to kill it only a few levels after starting and if you're good enough at dodging the attacks you should have an easier time.

                                                                            • Anonymous

Half the comments here are confusing Deathbirds with Death Rite Birds. Yes, they're similar, but they're not exactly the same.

The main differences are that Death Rite Birds use a lot more magic, have blue particle effects in the holes in their skulls and wings,, and have larger wings than Deathbirds.

There's a dedicated page for them, people, so please stop spamming it in the comments. Although there's an error on this page, the one on Caelid is a Death Rite Bird not a Death Bird. One's ugly, the other's uglier. C'mon, they deserve some respect.
