Deathbird is a Field Boss in Elden Ring. A Deathbird is a bipedal bird with arms and a bird skull for a head and is found in various locations, but only at night. They share a close resemblance with the Death Rite Bird but cannot wield magic and are typically weaker than their larger winged cousins. This is an optional boss as players do not have to defeat it to advance in Elden Ring.
The Deathbirds are graveyard fire keepers; it is said they rake out the ashen remains of the dead from their kilns.
Where to find Deathbird in Elden Ring
Deathbird can be found in:
- Warmaster's Shack [More Info] [Map Link]
- Weeping Peninsula [More Info] [Map Link]
- Scenic Isle [More Info] [Map Link]
- Capital Outskirts [More Info] [Map Link]
Deathbird Combat information
- Stance: 120
- Parryable: No
- Is vulnerable to a critical hit after being stance broken
Undead type
- Damage:
Standard,
Pierce,
Magic
- Inflicts:
Death Blight
- Weak spot: head
Negations (or Absorptions)
The negation numbers are the % of your damage that gets blocked. For example, if a negation is 60, 40% of that damage by that type will go through and 60% will be negated. Bigger number = less damage. A negation of 100 means no damage goes through, and a negation of -100 mean the enemy takes 2x damage from that source. 0 means damage goes pretty much as is.
Elden Ring Deathbird Boss Guide
Deathbird Fight Strategy
The Best Tips for Deathbird:
- Holy Water Pots can take advantage of its weakness to Holy damage and the pots' inherent 400% damage bonus against
Undead enemies to do massive damage even at low Faith
- The Sacred Blade skill is another great way for non-Faith builds to do Holy damage
- Stay on foot rather than riding Torrent. A Deathbird can leap a great distance, and the reach on its poker is long enough to clip you even when you're running at full speed on Torrent. Even ranged players should try to stay just outside the range of its swings, and keep the flexibility to dodge out of the way when it attacks
Melee Users
Stay close to its hind legs, time your dodges, and get a few swings in after every attack. Don't get greedy and attack more than a few times.
O Holy Fight: Because Deathbirds are both Undead and weak to Holy damage, melee builds with high Faith will have a particularly easy time defeating them. The Order's Blade sorcery is easy to get and will give your weapon a tremendous damage boost against this boss.
Magic and Ranged Users
It's Litany: For Faith-based magic builds, Litany of Proper Death will make short work of this fight. Because Deathbirds are both Undead and weak to Holy damage, it will do a whopping 1400% extra damage. Just be aware that it will only work when the Deathbird is touching the ground, so time the incantation carefully.
Deathbird Attacks & Counters
Attack | Description | Counter |
Swing | Swings its poker in various directions | Roll through the swing |
Hop & Swing | Takes a long gliding hop to one side to close distance, then swings its poker | Wait for the hop to finish then roll through the swing |
Jab | Pulls its poker back on its left side in a fencing stance, then stabs it forward | This always ends a combo, so roll forward and get in a hit |
Stab | Pulls its poker back on its right side, then stabs it forward | Dodge roll forward to get behind the Deathbird and avoid the shockwave if it follows with a Yank, but be aware it could combo into a different move |
Yank | After a Stab, pulls its poker back towards it creating a small shockwave | See above |
Peck | Pecks downward with its beak. Used if you're standing underneath it | Roll behind the Deathbird and get in a hit |
Slam | Slams its poker on the ground, creating a shockwave. Only ever used after a clockwise swing | Roll behind the Deathbird and get in a hit |
Fist Slam | Raises its left arm and slams it into the ground, creating a small shockwave | Roll behind the Deathbird and get in a hit |
Leaping Slam | Jumps into the air, raises its poker, and slams it into the ground creating a shockwave | Roll behind the Deathbird once the poker is horizontal. Be careful with the timing, because this attack does a lot of damage if it hits |
Two-Handed Slam | Grabs the head of the poker with its left hand, stands upright, then slams it into the ground doing damage in a small area | Roll when you see its left foot leave the ground, and try to end up behind it so you can take advantage of this attack's long recovery time to get in a few hits |
Screaming Grab | Leaps backwards, screams, then lunges forward to grab you with its mouth. If it connects, pecks you into the ground several times | Dodge backwards once you see it scream |
Death Screech | Screams, dealing a small amount of damage in an area and quickly building Death Blight | Roll away once you see it starting to scream and stay away in case is screams again |
Deathbird Lore, Notes & Other Trivia
- The Deathbirds are said to have been born from a “Twinbird,” said to be the envoy for an outer god, a role similar to the vassal beast for the Greater Will

Hit it with the Sacred Blade AoW in the head, then go straight for the body with some R1 or L1 spams if you're powerstancing, now that you're weapon has been imbued with the power of Christ. Don't give yourselves headaches going for the head.
- Anonymous
Wait is this supposed to be a well designed boss? I personally hate fighting these things and I think they are a poorly designed fight. Small weapons don't hit them often and the camera is terrible, and they have a lot of frame-trapping bs attacks. What am I missing here? Do people actually enjoy these fights?

Please do yourself and your sanity a favor and never fight these without Sacred Blade AoW. It's easy to get, easy to spam, and melts them like crazy. Holy pots are good, but you only have so many, and considering how much the birds jump around, it's not worth it to throw a limited use item with no tracking. Also, the late game birds are so tough, that you will have a seriously hard time killing them with just pots.
- Anonymous
I ended up coming back to the one in Leyndell Outskirts after getting the Blade of Calling, and using that AOW with a faith/holy-boosting Physick made this fight easy peasy

Casters, use rock sling with meteorite staff. Lock on to the head for some crazy damage and quick stuns.
- Anonymous
Holy water pots do a good job on these, but they do scale to FTH so I don't know how well if you don't have levels put into it. A word of caution though the death rite bird at consecrated snowfield will not melt to the holy water pots, it will kill you long before you can take advantage of its weakness to holy damage, try ekzykes's decay instead if you have it.
The death rite bird at mountaintop of the giants can be cheesed, if you follow the cliff edge looking down at castle sol west until it spawns then make a quick getaway for it to lose agro you will be able to get to a position above it to throw the holy water pots down on it and kill it pretty quickly, I had 45 FTH though. The giant purple skeleton the tibia mariner summons was bugged for me, it was there every time long after I'd killed the mariner if its the same for everyone its worth killing it before getting near the area where the death rite bird spawns, fighting both is going to be a headache.

I have the red feathered branch sword but I only remember killing the death rite bird closer to the raya lucaria academy. Does the bird at leyndell outskirts spawn in an area where the dead rise when you get close enough? If they are, will the bird still spawn if I clear the area of those skeletons and just wait until it gets to night? or do I have to trigger the fight straight from a grace checkpoint?

Jus saying, the giants next to the first deathbird spawn in limgrave apparently do crazy damage to the bird.

So that's why my lightning estoc was struggling even when overleveled. How... specific.
I had some difficulty at first, however he is very weak to holy damage. Lock onto his body and not his head, get as close as possible to limit his moveset and just mash away with a sacred weapon keeping an eye on his head for peck attacks. I infused an Uchigatana with Sacred Blade for fairly extreme damage.

Of course you can kill it pretty easily with some kind of magic that he is weak to. But as someone who enjoy melee, the camera locks on his head which is too high so 80% of your hit misses. He's too fast to fight unlocked but it's the only way. Keeps getting out of HUD. Defenitly made to fight with magic. Dissapointing.

These are extremely vulnerable to anything that has a bonus vs 'Those Who Live in Death'.
I was able to hit 3k+ damage consistently with an Inseparable Sword +7 using it's Sacred Blade ash of war, at base level stats for the sword.
The ash of war should have a strong effect on all weapons. If you're struggling with these enemies you can get the ash of war just north of the Third Church of Marika from a scarab beetle.

There is another deathbird by the site of grace "castle sol main gate" in the mountain top of giants. I haven't beaten it as it spawns with a ton of those laser beam skeleton guys and was more focused on the castle anyways
I didn't record this as well as I figured this site would know, but I guess I know something you guys didn't for once. The Weeping Peninsula death bird can be killed with the help of the bow golem by Morne Castle, just keep the bird downhill from you and the golem will occasionally deal good damage and stance break it for you. I used this strategy to kill it only a few levels after starting and if you're good enough at dodging the attacks you should have an easier time.

ok so why the 2 seperate pages for deathbird vs death rite bird if the caelid one that drops the poker is on both

Half the comments here are confusing Deathbirds with Death Rite Birds. Yes, they're similar, but they're not exactly the same.
The main differences are that Death Rite Birds use a lot more magic, have blue particle effects in the holes in their skulls and wings,, and have larger wings than Deathbirds.
- Anonymous
The ones on Mountaintops of the Giants are "Death Rite Bird". They are uglier than the normal "Death Bird". There's a dedicated page for them, people, so please stop spamming it in the comments. Although there's an error on this page, the one on Caelid is a Death Rite Bird not a Death Bird. One's ugly, the other's uglier. C'mon, they deserve some respect.
Just remember that Elden Ring isn't Dark Souls, you're not supposed to have honourable 1v1 bow-before-the-fight duels with the feathered incarnations of Death. Get Holy Water Pots, aim for the head, use Torrent and ledges, and don't complain this is a "bad boss" just because you can't claymore it.
