Beast Clergyman seeks and devours these.
|
Deathroot is a Key Item in Elden Ring. Gurranq Beast Clergyman seeks and devours these. Key Items in Elden Ring include a wide variety of items found in specific locations or given by a related NPC, which are used to unlock areas, quests, and to further progress the game's story.
A source that gives rise to Those Who Live in Death.
The beast clergyman, found at Bestial Sanctum in the distant east, collects and devours these roots.
On the night of the dire plot the stolen Rune of Death enabled the first Death of a demigod. Later, the Rune of Death spread across the Lands Between through the underground roots of the Greattree, sprouting in the form of Deathroot.

Elden Ring Deathroot Notes & Tips
- The Tibia Mariner at Summonwater Village is the weakest one, so it is recommended that you fight this one first if you want a Deathroot early on. [Map link]

Kind of messed up when you realize Maliketh's entire questline is just feeding him parts of his nephew's corpse
- Anonymous
the hidden path to the haligtree is not in the mountaintop it is in the consecrated snowfields

Just a heads up for anyone using the seamless co-op mod, giving deathroots across multiple hosts can cause issues and result in no gained rewards.

# 4 and 5 should be switched... you go to east liurnia before wyndham ruins

yo im just telling you know DO NOT USE ASH OF WAR IN THE BEASTIAL SANCTUM EVEN IF YOUR AIMING OUT THE DOOR, THAT BEST MOTHERF@#$% ATTACKED ME FROM BEHIND. DAMN THAT MADE ME JUMP HAHAHA

The one at Wyndham Ruins is pretty funny. I was running around the area when he appeared, and after running around trying to collect all the items around the area, I broke his AI and he just stood still...
- Anonymous
"Black Knife Assassin in the Deathtouched Catacombs, and Cemetery Shade in the Black Knife Catacombs." Poor assassin was lost.

The last one is somehow by far the easiest lol. All I did was stand behind a rock right in front of the boss and spam incantations. Summons couldn't hit me and neither could the boss. Weird.

Giving more than 1 at a time makes it not count towards the total and no extra drops recieved other than the first. Have only 2 death roots left to find and he hasn't even become hostile to me yet. I'm pretty much screwed until a patch or starting a new game
- Anonymous
Pulled him to the door and blasted him with the scarlet rot, after a few ticks he bowed down in submission and reset.

In case you're curious: Giving all Deathroots to Gurranq before starting Fia and D's 'quest' just makes it so you miss on Fia's 'cutscene' with D before she leaves the Roundtable Hold. You just find his stuff in the usual room, and everything progresses as usual.

I killed one of the death root bosses south of castle sol in the mountaintops of the giants area and the death root never dropped or I didn’t pick it up, that was about a week ago and I keep getting the “beast eye quivers” message when I go through that area, is there a fix for this or am I just screwed?
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Speculation: There are nine deathroots because nine Black Knife Assassins murdered Godwyn.
- Anonymous
Does this affect Maliketh at all? Am I making him stronger or weaker?
- Anonymous
The listing needs organized for game progression please. The Summonwater village mariner seems the weakest and is likely the first anyone encounters, for example. The East Liurnia of the Lakes one is often the 2nd one. This would help people that actually need this as a guide.
- Anonymous
There's one more deathroot not listed here. There is a non-boss mariner in the Mountaintops of Giants. From Snow Valley Ruins Overlook Site of Grace, go north west. He's parked in a little side path just above Castle Sol.

after the moment gurranq attack me, say me go away because the smell is making he hungry, i noticed that i kill this mini bosses but is not droping the deathroot, the game still very bugged. anyone had this problem and fixed on NG+? maybe i need to create another character
- Anonymous
Duo of those black knights. Darm that was a challenge for a pure melee setup. bleed works, but they are so quick to hit, so leapy, so speedy together ^^
- Anonymous
It is not behind the assassin in the death touched catacombs, it is behind the shade thing.
- Anonymous
I received deathroot from a Deathbird on the way to Castle Sol. I notice this is not on the wiki, has anyone else experienced this?
- Anonymous
Anyone else just have the Clergyman just randomly start attacking? I gave him the deathroot from the black knife catacombs and he just said that he needs more and just started attacking. I ran out of there because I'm underleveled and came back to the same result.

i cant find the last one. i have given 8 to gurranq and none in my inventory. i checked all locations stated here but i looted them all already/defeated the enemy that drops them

In case you are struggling with damaging Gurranq: The Rotten Breath dragon incantation can be used at an angle, being deflected by the door to the sanctum, immediately applying rot to him without him being able to hit you as you don't have to stand in front of him. When hus sanity returns, the rot will be healey automatically

So recently I was able to kill the skeletons in the catacombs and now they never die even when they try to revive you can’t kill them while they are down anymore. I keep finding false info as well. No chests for deathroot are popping up for me as well. This new update SUCKS
- Anonymous
There is a Tibia Mariner west of Snow Valley Ruins Overlook grace site that drops a deathroot.
- Anonymous
No achievement for getting them all? This feels like a pretty noteworthy quest.
- Anonymous

The boss in the Gelmir Hero's Grave did not drop one for me... Does this mean I'm just screwed out of getting them all now?
- Anonymous
Possibly fixed bug with 1.03. I gave him all 9 at once, he gave me first 5 rewards. Then I reloaded and he became aggresive. After he calmed down and I reloaded again, he gave me the rest of the rewards.
- Anonymous
Always give him one deathroot at a time. He will bug out and SKIP items, or just not give you the item until the NEXT deathroot.
- Anonymous
Do these carry over into NG+?
I accidentally killed the beastman by not realizing his aggro was gone and striking first when I respawned
This item is missing a marker on the map for the one dropped by the Tibia Mariner at Mountaintops of the Giants.
- Anonymous
Gurranq will suddenly be hostile after the 5th or 6th Deathroot. Beat him down and after a ¼ of his health is depleted, he'll return to sanity. Reload the area and he will accept Deathroots again.
- Anonymous
I killed all 4 Tibia Mariners but haven't got a fourth Deathroot, and Gurranq won't speak to me.
D is dead BTW, perhaps that's the cause.
- Anonymous
If he becomes hostile just run out and wait till he loses aggro and returns to his spot. He will be friendly again.
- Anonymous
Just to put it out there since i had trouble “The secret path to the Haligtree” is a dungeon by the grand lift. When going through it youll come to an octagon landing with a broken railing. The first drop will lead to a room with a hidden wall containing a relic. If you turn around it will lead to a room with enemies and a bud. From there you can make a right out of the room (there should be blood and messages to guide) to another room. From that room you can make a right and drop down to grab another item. Jump through the window (theres a big octobird)

Moves NE just outside of the building after giving 6 deathroots. The 7th turnin gives an Ancient Stone and he vanishes
There is another tibia mariner at Mountaintop of giants.
Exact location and drops.

Gave the Beast Clergyman 6 Deathroots, attacked the Gargoyle outside and not the Beast guy is hostile towards me. I used the Grace next to him and my game just crashed.

>Obtained when defeating the Tibia Mariner on a ledge north of Stargazer's Ruins. Map Link
This is wrong. It's more accurate to say that he's northwest of the Snow Valley Ruins Overlook's Site of Grace. He'll be on a ledge that oversees the nearby walking mausoleum and castle.

Giants' Mountaintop Catacombs is before the long, thin bridge leading to the Ancient Snow Valley Ruins to the right of the gathering of fire worshippers. It has an Ulcerated Tree Spirit boss that gives a Golden Seed and Glovewort Picker's Bell Bearing [2] and a chest after beating it with a Deathroot.

There is a deathroot inside hidden path to the haligtreee. You will have to drop down a broken ledge onto an invisible bridge. And after some roaming you will find the boss which is a mimic tear, and behind it is the deathroot
- Anonymous
The giants mountaintop catacombs chest didnt have a deathroot it had a golden seed for me
- Anonymous
Unless there is some sort of new bug you CAN give the clergyman more than 1 root at a time.
- Anonymous
There is no chest behind Black Knife Assassin. There is only ONE Deathroot in Black Knife Catacombs.
- Anonymous
8 Deathroots are from dungeons and 3x Mariner Boss, the 9th is actually Mariner as well, but without the boss health bar(at between Castle Sol and the Stargazer Ruin, where you notice there are tons of Giant Skeletons area), look around and you should find that sneaky skeleton.
- Anonymous
Don't give the beast clergyman more than one at a time otherwise it won't count but will take it out of your inventory
- Anonymous
if you give 6 and then kill him you can get all rewards because when he died he will drop the dragon smithing stone
- Anonymous
You can gain a desthroot from one of those dire bears. East of agheel lake south near the cliffs there's a guy that if you kill he turns into one of those giant bears that when killed gives you death root
- Anonymous
There are 9 deathroots, the other one is in giant's mountaintop catacomb, after defeating the boss of the dungeon it can be looted in a chest after defeating him.

Theres another in the hidden path to the haligtree dunno where though haven't explored enough yet. The name is spookychico btw

There is another one in the secret way to the Holy Tree, you need to jump off the balcony through a broken ledge, just down, and walk along an invisible road forward (there is a chest) and back (there are just mobs and something else), but before reaching 2 rooms turn left like this. to look straight at the window with the mob, kill it and jump down to the left. If I knew how, I would upload the video here

Confirmed the Tibia Mariner near Snow Valley Ruins Overlook. Drops a deathroot and Helphen's Steeple greatsword

Hey I found another deathroot location. Its almost directly to the east of the snow valley ruins overlook. The name is spookychico btw.

For the Hidden Path to the Haligtree site of grace Deathroot (this one too me forever to figure out):
From the site of grace, turn around and go back down into the catacombs. After you kill the octobus that falls from the ceiling, go forward til you get to that center area, you'll notice there's a broken ledge. Drop from it onto an invisible platform. There's two doorways on either side that the platform connects to whoch have some loot. When you get close to the doorway furthest from the ledge you fell from, look to your left and you'll notice a doorway a bit further below. There is *not* platform directly across; use glowstones to find a gently sloping path away from the horizontal platform that eventually joins the invisible one to that furthest doorway. After dropping down, go through the window. The rest is up to you.

There is another deathroot by killing a tibia mariner in mountaintop of giants, located at the graveyard of Snow Valley Ruins Overlook grace. Specifically, northwest.
- Anonymous
The Tibia Mariner in the graveyard of giants is behind a drop down to the left, half way into the graveyard, with the orientation of when you enter the graveyard from the bridge. I'm not certain if you need to kill any giant skeletons for it but I killed the ones with beam eyes.

After giving the 9th deathroot there will be unique dialogue. After that he will award you with ancient dragon smithing stone and leaves.
- Anonymous
there is a deathroot in the giant's mountain top catacombs, east of Zamor Ruins grace, right before you take the long narrow path. From chest after defeating the ulcerating tree spirit.
- Anonymous
Can confirm the one in the Giant's Mountaintop Catacombs. Also I finished this questline (Can't remember if there was a 10th one I got somewhere...I dont think so). Endreward is an Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone, the one you need to get the maxlvl for regular weapons.

4th tibia mariner in land of the giants. not in water its kind of hidden

There’s a death root at the hidden path to the haligtree lost grace. Go down the stairs until you reach the center platform and jump off the where the railing is missing. Follow the invisible pathway until you can jump off onto a smaller platform with 2 windows. in that room there is a lever with a snake ball above it pull the lever and the deathroot is in the boss room in a chest.
- Anonymous
Giant's Mountaintop Catacombs, in a chest after the boss fight should be number 8.The catacombs are on the right side before the long narrow walkway between Zamor Ruins & Ancient Snow Valley Ruins sites.
How the hell can i get to the Snow Valley ruins though, I couldn't figuer out. Might have something to do with the eye stirring when in the Hidden Path to the Haligtree.

You can find another Deathroot in the Black Knife Catacombs, at the end of the ravine near the minor Erdtree in Liurnia

I just found a sixth one from a place called Gelmir Hero's grave from Mt. Gelmir. Its in a chest after the boss. Good luck though, the place is absolutely diabolical.
- Anonymous
5th one gives you claw, 6th gives you hurl bolder. 3 were found from the tibia miners listed above, 1 from deathtouched and 1 from black knife catacombs, and the 6th one is gelmir hero's grave like that one guy said
- Anonymous
Snow Valley Ruins Overlook has a Tiba, that gives you a root. Also Stone Of Gurranq is a spell he gives you

7th deathroot at snow valley ruins overlook grave, just to the west in the graveyard. obtained from mariner

6th Deathroot, Gelmer Hero Grave.
Spoiler:
You need to cross the lava where the first chariot is, the second one is a meme and seems to be a deathtrap that will cost you your runes. Boss is a big wolf with a sword.
Additional Spoiler:
Black Knife Catacombs has 2 bosses if you didn't know, there's a hidden wall leading to an assassin before the drop where you pull the lever after ascending the trap.
- Anonymous
The 6th Deathroot can be found north of Stargazers' Ruins in the snow biome, across the bridge. Once you cross the bridge a skeleton shooting a beam out of its eyes will attack you - once the skeleton is dead a Tibia Mariner will spawn and it will drop a Deathroot and the Helphens Steeple sword.
- Anonymous
There's a 6th deathroot that you can get from a tibia mariner near Castle Sol in the graveyards.
It is clearly linked to the Dark Soul. Godwyn was even merged with the creatures of the lake like humans were merged with insects and wolfs inside the abyss
