Dragon Greatclaw is a Colossal Weapon in Elden Ring. The Dragon Greatclaw scales primarily with Strength and Dexterity and is a good Weapon for going against dragon-like creatures and enemies. In addition to general Physical Damage, what makes this weapon great is that it does Lightning Damage which can be especially effective towards specific enemy types.
Weapon said to have been whittled from the claw of a great, ancient dragon, wielded by grotesque Tree Sentinels who yet serve the Erdtree.
The claw is enwreathed with lightning, and tears through the dragons' feeble descendants with ease.

Can't be buffed due to the innate dragonwound effect, which is 5% worse against ancient dragons than just applying dragonwound grease to anything else. They really didn't want this to have any niche besides "sorta good at level 200+"

one of the lowest AR colossal weapons, extremely mid locked weapon art, all attacks do 20% less stance damage than most other colossal weapons. what advantages does this thing have?? i guess it weighs 0.5 less than the great club

if it was buffable it would actually kinda destroy, it already gets good AR on a high level build
- Anonymous
The tree sentinel guy himself must be quite the bad-ass, cause the weapon he wields is crap.
- Anonymous
They could have at least given this thing lighting slash but with red lightning. WHAT WE'RE THEY THINKING??
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
I know the ash of war is terrible and scaling is pretty bad probably the worst colossal weapon but ive been invading with it and its kinda growing on me lmao it’s actually a pretty decent trading machine
- Anonymous
If they dont give this a unique AOW in the expansion, we riot.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Upgraded to +10 only to just now find out I can't infuse it with any Ash of War --pain--
- Anonymous
What I wouldn't give to have a unique AOW on this one. An upwards slash that releases a red lightning wave like the sentinel uses would be so sick
- Anonymous
Ok everyone knows how to fix this spell. But what should be considered is that hypothetically its aow needs to be balanced, not with the op features many want.
Besides it probably won’t change. If you want to play a good version of the weapon install a mod
And if you’re ps like me then cope

Listen, I don't even care that it gets outclassed in terms of damage by heavy infused colossals / other str based colossals, or that it isn't even an insane quality based weapon. All I want is for it to have a ****ing unique ash of war, considering we get this from Draconic Tree Sentinel, a mid game challenging boss that does some cool moves with this weapon. It's such a disappointment of a weapon.
- Anonymous
This could use some things.
Lightning on an fully charged attack, kind of like ruins greatsword but red lightning.
Like someone else said, a red lightning ash of war that is like the dragonslayer greataxe from dark souls but red lightning.
A bit better scaling.
Was that so hard
- Anonymous
Note: This weapon can be buffed by the lightning damage of Vyke's Dragonbolt
This is emotionally and thematically the worst weapon in Elden Ring, regardless of how "usable" it might actually be. Having Endure as an AoW, on a Somber weapon no less, makes no sense logically when something as simple as Lightning Slash exists, and the weapon is used by such an iconic mandatory boss as Draconic Tree Sentinel, which launches red lightning all over the place as you are fighting them. I can't think of any weapons off the top of my head from previous Soulsborne games, especially boss weapons, that are as disappointing as this one. Like, even weapons like the Weathered Straight Sword are not disappointing because you have expectations that will align with the weapon in question. My expectations for this weapon massively diverge from what I actually received, which is why I think this is by far the worst weapon in the game. It's just awful, and I feel nothing by sour thoughts whenever I try to use this thing.
- Anonymous
The weapon skill should've been at least something like Vyke's Dragonbolt but without the body buff. And maybe they could also make the charged attack and the jumping heavy attack to do some red lightning AoE when buffed with the skill.
- Anonymous
In defence of this weapon, You are kinda doing this weapon dirty by putting it up against heavy infusion colossal weapons. This is not a Str based weapon it is a quality weapon and as far as quality vs heavy infusion goes this one is comparable to most examples in the game, it does around 7% less AR compared to heavy around the "typical pvp meta level".
When you go higher than that and have 80 in each str and dex then this weapon is higher than most other colossal weapons AR, giant crusher beats it by like 2.5% AR, but this one has that 30% bonus to dragons which makes it the highest AR weapon to use vs dragons, the best colossal weapon to use vs dragons, and simply "good" for everything else.
- Anonymous
They literally could have ported a reskinned dragonslayer greataxe weapon art to this weapon and it would be perfect but no we are stuck with endure instead
- Anonymous
Why does everybody say it sucks because it does standard damage and not strike. Why would Strike be better?
- Anonymous
"Alright I finally beat that Sentinel with the flashy red lightning moves, I can't wait to see how cool this thing's unique skill is, I bet it's really stro- oh it doesn't have one, well shucks but at least I can put Lightning Slash on it and- oh it's a Somber weapon and stuck with... Endure? Uhhhhhhhh OH I understand! This has Endure on it to facilitate big trades and retaliate with enormous piercing damage! Miyazaki you've done again, your genius is unparal- oh it does standard damage"
Dragon tooth got ruined into this.
Please brush your teeth before bedtime or yours will end up with the same fate
- Anonymous
Does the lightning damage scale with the dexterity modifier? I could see that giving this thing a niche, at least.
- Anonymous
I remember first playing elden ring, getting this weapon for the first time assuming it would have some really cool red lightning ash of war, maybe the one where the sentinel boi drags it across the ground and the bolts come flying across or something.
And then I pressed R2 and was confronted with the cold, sobering embrace of reality. Sad times indeed.
Anyways underrated weapon though.
- Anonymous
Is it bad? Yes
Will i lose against other optimized builds? Yes
Nevertheless im still gonna use it to bonk dragons and tarnished alike. (PVP tip: Endure on colossals might be useless for most situations, it resets your poise).
Also equip Malformed Dragon set to honor your Havel ancestors.

I played huge part of The Convergence mod with this weapon and I can easily say this weapon in vanilla Elden Ring is just make me really sad. There is huge wasted potential about this weapon and it could had an one of the most fun weapon to play with, just like in The Convergence mod. sadge :(

"well now that we're done designing the draconic sentinel, what kind of weapon should it drop upon defeat?"
"a shitty quality weapon that doesn't even do strike damage with an early game skill nobody will use at any level"
"but-"
"jerry, listen. a shitty quality weapon that doesn't even do strike damage with an early game skill nobody will use at any level and that's final"

People are angry about the AoW but can we talk about the fact that it does STANDARD damage and not strike ? They went full dirty on that weapon and this is kinda sad considering the potential it could have
Morne version of Endure ?
Dragonslayer Greataxe AoW ?
A buff like the sentinel does withred lightning ? Nada
- Anonymous
Okay, I’m here to kinda “defend” this weapon. Wanna know why it’s has endure and nothing cool? Because I think this is supposed to be a callback to the Dragon Tooth that Havel wielded. I feel like the Tree Sentinel in general are a callback to Havel, where his weapon in DS3, the Dragon Tooth, had a very similar weapon skill in Perseverance. So, I recommend this. Use this weapon, the Draconic Sentinel Greatshield and the normal Tree Sentinel armor set. Become Havel the Golden.
- Anonymous
Would be fitting if it had a similar weapon skill similar to the Dragonslayer Greataxe from ds3; since the Draconic Tree Sentinel does a similar attack.
- Anonymous
Y'know, I wouldn't mind having Endure as the AoW if it was something more than Endure... something like Morne's Wrath from DS3 (just with red lightning rather than holy energy).

This could've been the faith version of the Fallingstar Jaw, but no... we got Endure, the thing absolutely no one uses after passing RL30
- Anonymous
They really did dirty to this poor weapon... the AOW is terrible, why can't we charge it up with Lighting like the Draconic Tree sentinel does!?
- Anonymous
I never used this weapon in vanilla and I'm glad I never did, having a generic aow without the ability to change it is so dissapointing. Dragon Smasher goes hard in reforged.
- Anonymous
Consumes the least stamina of any colossal. Useful when stat points are tight
- Anonymous
Ugly ahh weapon and it sucks. Why should I use it? I shouldn't.
- Anonymous
I really struggle to see where this wespon even fits. Underwhelming performance in general for a colossal weapon and it's niche of being effective against dragons turns out to be worse than simply using dragonwound grease or vike's dragonbolt on a regular weapon. Heck, even the axe of godrick has better results.
If they plan to buff it in the future, let it be the red lightning base damage and make it 20% more effective against dragons, because right now even the troll hammer outshines it by a wide margin.
- Anonymous
Why does it have such shitty AoW? Draconic Tree Sentianl summens fkn red lightning with it, why are we stuck with generic fkn endure? Whats the point of somber weapons if they are not unique?
- Anonymous
It could've been the Dragon Tooth of Elden Ring, yet it's pretty much a glorified giant wet noodle
- Anonymous
On my quality build (50/50) this thing has the highest possible AR so far at 956 with a lightning clutch ring. Between that, being the lightest colossal and having an excellent damage type I'm not sure why this gets so much hate
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Two things that would make this weapon better:
1.) A unique AoW that would basically be a Red Lightning variant of Regal Beastclaw
2.) Strength scaling bumped up to at least B
- Anonymous
This thing needs a real buff, after several patches this thing is still under powered, every time I’ve beaten the draconic tree sentinel I just put the weapon in storage.
- Anonymous
Really wish this had a unique version of endure. It'd be dope as hell if the endure also gave a red lightning buff.
Dragonscale blade/dragon halberd get frost lightning versions of standard aow. A red lightning version of endure would fit thematically and make up for not having a truly unique aow.

- Anonymous
Dude…this thing is underpowered??? I’ve been running train on literally everything in this game with the dragon great claw.
- Anonymous
Give the shield Thunderbolt (but red) and give the weapon lightning slash (but red)
- Anonymous
They should allow this one to be able to use ash of wars and then when DLC comes out put a scarab or something where you can get a Draconic Tree Sentinel ash of wars. Same thing for the shield by giving us a Thunderbolt ash of war only usable on geatshields.
Because as of right I'd rather use a Brick Hammer with lightning on than this garbage.
- Anonymous
really sad that this doesn't get a cool lightning themed AoW.
- Anonymous
should've had a red ancient dragon version of the thunderbolt ash of war
- Anonymous
Even if underpowered, this weapon still has good use as ancient dragon killer for a strength build.
14 dexterity isn’t a huge asking price.
Ancient Dragons’ Lightning Strike incantation is absolutely bonkers at killing ancient dragons, but costs 26 Faith. Clawmark Seal makes the damage scale with strength.
Otherwise, there is no other easy way for a strength build to deal a ton of red lightning damage.
- Anonymous
Everyone’s talking about the ash but the base damage/scaling is the real issue. It should have been a lightning golden halberd with strike instead of thrust... but it doesn’t even do strike damage, it does physical despite clearly being a bludgeon. I compare it to golden halberd because it’s the same stats, comes from a tree sentinel and golden halberd has extremely high base damage... so this should have been even better base damage with the trade off of slower move set.
- Anonymous
A quick fix for this weapon could be add a unique interaction with Vyke's dragonbolt, buffing the weapon and adding AoE attacks to the Endure AoW.
- Anonymous
A quality colossal that you cant infuse.
Hmm, yes, but why tho
- Anonymous
Hope they give this weapon a proper ash of war call it sentinels lightning slam where it works exactly as it does with the draconic tree sentinel. Also perhaps a draconic lightning call ash of war on the dragonclaw greatshield and fix the scaling on both. Then a draconic tree sentinel cosplay would be possible
- Anonymous
This weapon's endure should give a lightning buff to the weapon, to compensate for the trash damage and the user a Dragonbolt blessing. All in red lightning, how good. A unique variant of endure would be nice, similar to dragon halberd spinning slash or river of blood corpse piler (double slash)
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
It could've been the faith version of the fallingstar beast jaw, but an underwhelming and close to useless ash of war made it mostly overlooked and one of the worse colossals.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
This could have just had the thunderbolt skill colored red and a lot more people would probably use it
- Anonymous
Actually this weapon is a decent choice for second colossal in offhand, has lower weight and need sombers to upgrade.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
I guess 'Endure but you can also press R2 for a big attack + lightning buff' was too much work lol. I hope with the fantastic patches they've been doing they'll update some of these disappointing, never-used weapons. It'd be a simple way of breathing some more life into the game.
- Anonymous
The sad reason why it is neither buffable nor infusable is because this weapon "basically" always has Dragonwound Grease on it. It is slightly less effective than the actual grease effect only against Ancient Dragons, since the Grease deals 20% more damage, whereas any weapon which deals extra damage against dragons, will have its effect reduced by half, hence this Greathammer only deals 15% more.
Still though. It is a nice little thing to remind.
- Anonymous
So hear me out for a second. This is the lightest weight colossal weapon, tied with the troll hammer—meaning it uses less stamina to swing, works well powerstanced, and is longer than half the weapons in it's class. Now for the real kicker: because of how softcaps work on unique weapons this is actually a dexterity colossal baby... at least as much as a colossal can be. Because both the physical and lightning scale with dexterity, it greatly outpaces strength investment until you have about 70 levels to throw away; at which point it finally becomes a quality weapon. So here's my advice if you want to build around this bad boy, level your strength until you meet the base requirements then just ignore it. Then keep pumping dexterity until you reach 47. Dump the rest into endurance to powerstance and become a beefcake. There, between endure and your armor you should be nigh unkillable. Have fun kids.
- Anonymous
It's not a BAD weapon, it just doesn't feel like a UNIQUE weapon. It needed just a little more. A unique Endure, like the Dragon Halberd's spin slash, would have been a perfect, low-budget addition. Keep the Endure animation, but add an instant, "SHAZAM!"-style lightning strike that deals damage in a small AOE around you and leaves you with the red lightning body buff.
Make it a Roar, too, if you take yours with extra nuts.
- Anonymous
They seriously couldn't have at least slapped lightning slash onto it?
- Anonymous
Dude, lvl 176, Str 50, Dex 50. Axe Talisman and Claw Talisman. This weapon Deals Damage 1H 869, 2H 912. Definitely Recommend for Quality builds.
- Anonymous
It's a good weapon. I put 80 points in strength and 80 in dexterity. With that, I duel wield Giant Crushers and duel wield the Dragon Greatclaws. The Dragon Greatclaws do more damage (even with Thunderbolt ash on Crushers) than the Crushers and use less stamina. The only reason when I switch between the two is when I deal with dragons (30% more dmg against dragon type enemies) or I'll want the crushers to smash enemies shields and break their stance (bosses and knights). It does have a crappy AoW but the red lightning does its own damage without needing anything. They are a good colossal weapon...you just need to keep up with Dexterity for it to benefit you.
- Anonymous
imagine
A. at least B strength scaling
B. if it had a unique ash of war where you run forward a short distance, dragging it on the ground behind you. then transition into a upwards swing with a red lightning effect. maybe the lightning even sticks around on the weapon as a buff for like 45 seconds or something, idk. this weapon could have been something, instead you are literally better off using a giant tree branch
- Anonymous
What the ****. It's literally another firelink coiled sword issue. The weapon art or ash **** is even worse. What the actual **** are you smoking fromsoftware. This game sucks
- Anonymous
Only gave it endure because of it thematically being similar to Havel's Dragon Tooth from DS1-DS3. There are a million other better attacks that the Tree Sentinels uses that they could have pasted onto this instead. Such a waste.
- Anonymous
For anyone wondering why the AR is so low compared to other colossals, that's because this is actually a quality/DEX weapon despite what the scaling tells you. Just get to 30 STR and pump the rest into DEX to maximize damage. The reason for this phenomenon is that lightning damage in this game scales with DEX.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Draconic Tree Sentinels get crazy lightning attacks and we get endure as a weapon skill? WTF, FromSoft?
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Pros: Light for a Colossal weapon, relatively low stat requirements, +30% dmg bonus on normal Dragon-type enemies and +15% on Ancient Dragons, hits with Lightning as well as Physical damage.
Cons: Literally. Everything. Else.
If you never upgrade any weapons AND never up your stats beyond the minimum to wield this thing, the damage boost against dragons might be nice. But other than that, it's hopelessly nerfed; the base damage and scaling are so piss-poor that upgrading weapons or yourself will cause it to get quickly outclassed by almost anything else, even against dragons.
Unless FromSoftware un-nerfs it in a future patch, don't waste your time, runes, or Somber Stones.
- Anonymous
no unique weapon art and bad scaling
now this is a bruh moment
- Anonymous
For the life of me i cannot understand why this weapon is the way it is. The gate to the middle of the game is draconic tree sentinel, and when he uses this, it is a red lightning spewing, spine smashing machine. Yet for some reason when it drops to it becomes a wet noodle with endure locked in. Bad scaling, bad ability. Save your stones tarnished.
- Anonymous
Couldn't they just give this thing a red lightning buff with endure that would make this so much better
It looked so much cooler when the malformed sentinel one-shotted me with it at the top of the steps. Best save your stones fellow tarnished, and put those foolish ambitions to rest.
- Anonymous
I have no clue how this one slipped through the cracks. One of the worst weapons for PVP or PVE. It's light for a colossal weapon, but that's where the list of pros ends. Cons include needing a full on quality build to even get respectable damage, abysmal split damage, the poor colossal weapon moveset, and possibly the worst ash of war on any unalterable weapon. I'm hoping there's a patch that puts a more suitable unique ash of war on this thing that mimics the lift and slam of the draconic tree sentinel who uses it and also buffs it with lightning for a respectable period of time like 60 seconds. The long buff wouldn't be too much to ask considering the base damage is so low.
Only reason I can think to use this is if you're cosplaying the son of a draconic tree sentinel in the capital who wants to fight alongside his dad.
- Anonymous
I love the fact that you cannot even enchant this thing with red lightning or something. And it's supposed to be an endgame weapon. Looks like a big f*ck you to me.
- Anonymous
They gave this thing endure? Really? They didn’t give it an Ancient Lightning Slam? Wtf From…
- Anonymous
This needs a unique Ash of War, one that should imbue the weapon with red lightning & slam the weapon repeatedly similar to how the Sentinels themselves attack, while then leaving the red lightning effect for 45 seconds which adds say, 75-100 bonus lightning damage ontop of the base damage.
- Anonymous
This could have been such a cool quality weapon concept, with phys being influenced mostly by strength and lightning influenced with dex like the veteran's prosthesis, unfortunately it has very little going for it, even at 60/60 it's fairly weak compared to the other large quality weapons like the wheel and bloodhound fang. Doesn't even shine against dragons since they're innately pretty tough against lightning and its horseback moveset is sluggish as with all colossals
- Anonymous
Player: wow, I got this cool weapon I wonder what WA it has!
FS: it gets Endure
Player: oh, well I can just infuse it then right?
FS: no it's a somber weapon, can't be infused or buffed
Player: um, okay endure isn't bad ig, it has good damage though?
FS: no, it has horrible damage for a colossal weapon
Player: so it will have good scaling then?
FS: C in both STR and Dex
Player: it's not a dex weapon even though it's from dragons, it's not a faith weapon even though it's used by tree sentinel, nor is it a Str weapon even though it's a colosal, it's a mid quality that gets out performed by ghiza's wheel?
FS: Yes
Player:....well does it do anything special?
FS: it's good against dragons, but it's worse then using dragonwound grease.
Player: is it at least the longest CW?
FS: no, it's in the middle
Player: is there any point in useing this weapon?
FS: it's kinda good at 300
