Dragonclaw is an Incantation in Elden Ring. The Dragonclaw spell conjures a colossal claw to tear through hordes and overpower standalone foes. Updated to Patch 1.07.

Transforms caster into a dragon to tear through foes with dragon claws. Allows one follow-up attack.

Incantation of those who have hunted dragons and feasted upon their hearts. This is a pure and overwhelming power.

Elden Ring Dragonclaw Guide

  • Dragon Communion Incantation
  • Stamina Cost: 35
  • Deals standard physical damage
  • Can be cast twice in a row before incurring the downtime.
  • When the sequence is finished however, this spell receives a long recovery time of 2 seconds during which the caster cannot commence any actions.
  • Full combo takes on average 6 seconds to complete, with the first slam landing 2 seconds after the initial cast.
  • This spell grants increased Poise, but only during the mid-air animation.
  • When wielding a seal in both hands, this incantation can be chain cast by alternating between the left-hand and right-hand cast buttons, doing so is superior to using the standard follow up cast, due to its shorter duration and recovery time.
  • Note: As of Patch 1.07, FP cost reduced from 32 to 24, and poise damage and stamina damage against guarding enemies were both increased. The directional control on the attack was also improved.

Cancel out of the first hit with Bloodflame Claws, Bestial Sling, Catch Flame, or (god help them) Wrath of Gold to scare the bajeezus out of people.

Don't bother with it in RL125 colosseum pvp, everyone knows the timing and will punish you for casting it. Honestly, don't bother using anything other than the meta equipment, everyone at 125 is sweatier and more knowledgeable than you (me) lol.

This slaps, literally. Devastating power, follow up attack allows you to travel a pretty good distance to catch people, and the levitation actually helps avoid attacks if timed right. Also has a good bit of hyperarmor. You'll take damage but won't get knocked out of the cast easily.

I use dragonclaw all the time (pve) and it's niche is basically anything smaller than a knight, so like soldiers, foot soldiers, dogs, claymen, misbegotten, anything you can think of. The aoe is good against groups and fast enemies. It's harder to get around shields than you might think though, and soldiers with shields up will survive two strikes. The hyperarmor seems better than most but it's not enough to tank through heavy attacks from knights, bosses, that kind of thing, making dragonmaw a better choice. If I could buff anything about the spell it would be starting the hyperarmor earlier in the cast so that the timing is the same as dragonmaw's, as it is you need to be more cautious with timing this spell. Probably the coolest looking spell in the game and I love using it as my main attack.

Would have been so cool if dragonclaw had a mini-moveset like catch flame. Basically adding animations for sprint, jump, and backstep attacks.

I wonder will the DLC give us madness or sleep dragon breath or maybe dragon tail hmm lightening breath sounds cool too.

To the user below me who asked: Radagan's Icon (the talisman that decreases cast time for Incantations and Sorceries) DOES NOT reduce the cast time for this spell.

As cool as Dragon Communion Incantations are, its frustrating how few items there are that cover their weaknesses. That being slow spells that require a lot of FP. I've been having to make my limited casts more impactful by buffing their damage via the Dragon Communion Seal, the Incantation Scarab Helm, and the Flock's Canvas Talisman.

Life is hard for dragon builds in Fromsoft games, but at least Elden Ring allows us to wear armor. In the Souls series, the dragon head and torso stones could only activate if you were butt nekkid.

Nifty little animation glitch with this one, if you cast dragonclaw once you can chain-cast quickly into a number of spells like catch flame or dragonmaw. If you chain cast into agheel's flame (or similar) your character will still use the dragonclaw wind-up animation, lurching your character forward roughly the distance of a light roll. Most people instinctively run away from agheel's flame if they were just staggered, and normally they can get out of range before the first damage tick. Do with this information what you will.

Not really the page for it, but just to correct the comment below mine, Crystalians have a 90% reduction to all damage except strike/blunt before breaking.

To add on my comment below, make sure you break the crystalians stance to actually do meaningful damage with ANYTHING. There’s nothing in the game that bypasses their armor regardless the damage type that I’m a aware of. They are weak to strike damage but not until you actually break their stance.

@08Nov20222116 I’d imagine when slamming an enemy into the ground with the palm of a giant open hand it wouldn’t necessarily slash them lol. Think about doing that to a bug, would it make sense to say you slashed or striked the bug? But jokes aside I’m not entirely sure, I’d imagine it would be either standard or strike damage. But I have yet to see in this wiki when it comes to sorceries/incants that deal physical damage have a specific physical damage type. I think it might all just be standard. But obviously I could be wrong.

I like how every dragon incant feels powerful, but still feels somewhat balanced since it chugs fp and is relatively slow

"Deals physical and slightly magic damage" what? who wrote that?

Tested with terra magicka, there is no boost in Pvp or Pve. This incantation does physical damage only. Article needs an edit.

Use this on my tree witch build (thorn staff, erdteree seal, 70 faith, 20 int) for a big physical damage 'great hammer' attack to mix up with other damage types. Excellent spell, much better than the magic counterpart 'gavel of hamia'

Huh. Never thought about it, but the arm you conjure appears to be that of an Ancient Dragons, as opposed to the other Dragon Communion spells that utilize the physical power of the lesser neo-dragons and wyrms, making this one unique. Placidussax's ruin is a also another spell that utilizes the transformation into an ancient dragon, but is not considered a dragon communion spell, for whatever reason.

This is honestly one of the best incantation in the game for both pve and pvp, the share amount of utility it give, it does over 1000 damage in an optimized faith build, has hyper armor, guarranted roll catch if they panic roll after getting hit by the first part of dragonclaw, it true combo into a catch flame, wich you can then do a running catch flame to catch their panic roll, however this is the best part, it has pretty much no recovery for any followup spell, meaning if someone roll into you to dodge your first dragonclaw, you can instantly use catch flame to catch their roll, and potentially stagger them if you break their poise, IF they roll away or don't come into your dragonclaw range, you can cast honed bolt as a follow up wich come very fast with the chain casting. I will alway recommand in any incantation build. Its amazing.

This ended up being very good on my Arcane build playthrough. Dual occult uchis were strong, but often lacked stagger power on certain enemies; especially if they couldn't bleed.

when you have two seals equipped instead of doing it twice you can alternate between left and right faster than you'd expect. you won't get the super long recovery of the second slam, near infinite hyper-armor, and your stamina will regen between the casts so you can keep doing it as long as you have fp

Ah yes, the move that Alain abused to death in the Kalos League.

On a more related note, it's decent. Can be cast twice in quick succession to smash multiple enemies to the ground.

Dragonclaw doesn't always work correctly with catch flame or bestial sling.

Normally, the follow-up attack can be used immediately after a catch flame or bestial sling.

The fast cast animation can be triggered by using certain spells (stuff with follow-up or cast repeatedly) after 2 catch flames or bestial slings (there may be more ways to trigger this, but this is all I know).

When this fast animation goes off after casting dragon claw, fp and stamina are consumed, but no spell attack occurs. Casting dragonclaw again results in an immediate follow-up attack.

I thought maybe the fast cast animation wasn't working correctly, but using it with honed bolt or lightning strike resulted in faster attacks instead of no attacks.

I assume that the fast cast animation was supposed to release a quicker 1st attack, because the follow-up attack can still be used right after. If this isn't the case, I think it would be best if dragonclaw was unable to get the fast cast animation at all. Losing fp and stamina just to lock yourself in place feels pretty bad.

Can anyone confirm hyperarmor? I swear I’ve been knocked on my ass with this but some commenters seem to think it has it

I think this and Maw need a fp reduction to make them a bit more usable. Most instances you are better off just slinging some Stone of Gurranq for damage and stagger. Dont sleep on that spell, great free aim/tracking.

This spell has way more pvp potential than I thought originally because of its mix-up potential. This is a spell you can combo cast, however after the second attack in the claw combo you have a ton of end lag that can be punished. BUT if you only do one claw attack, you can follow it up with another incantation almost instantly. Basically it can be combo’d into any incantation. Meaning you can slam the ground once, and if they try and circle around and punish you, you can cast something like Catch Flame or Placidudax’s Ruin as a much faster cast to catch them off guard, or if they run away you can catch them with a lightning bolt or a breath attack when they don’t expect you to be able to close the distance. A ton of fun in my opinion! Also solid in PVE for breaking guards and killing annoying enemies that get up in your face in groups, like dogs and those little stone imp things

It has a long recovery after you "land" from the animation, but for some reason you can interrupt this recovery if you cast another spell.

(rennala). it was letting me cast other spells but not that one in that room so i got confused.

It's a great spell, because it gives hyper armour. The damage is not bad either though Dragonmaw, which also gives hyperarmour deals much more.

BUT, the advantage this spell has over Dragonmaw is the AOE effect that it has making it better for groups of enemies and for PVP, because it can be double casted and many people tend to forget about the second part of the attack

Amazing spell mostly because of its super-armor which makes it a must have for PVP. As long as you have the vigor to take a hit and the arcane scaling you can wreck with it

                                                                • Anonymous

At first glance it has a slow cast, high cost, and mediocre damage.
But it gives hyper armor while casting, and seems to rip through shields. Even the dragon breath attacks are stopped by shields, but this spell seems to ignore them.

                                                                  • It's nice for a starter dragon spell. Not amazing but you can get it early and does decent ''instant'' AoE damage, instant compared to breath attacks that is. Also you can combo into a second slam after the first.
