Elden Ring Dragonmaw Guide

  • Dragon Communion Incantation
  • Stamina Cost: 50
  • Deals physical and slightly magic damage
  • Your character will slightly float in the air and lunges forward during the full animation
  • You can swivel your character while casting to strike in a different direction.
  • The full cast takes on average 4 seconds, with the bite being registered around the 2.5-second mark.
  • This spell grants hyper-armor, but only during the mid-air animation.
  • Note: As of Patch 1.07, FP cost reduced significantly, from 46 to 34. Additionally, stamina damage against guarding enemies has been increased and the hitbox around the dragon's neck enlarged to make it easier to hit an enemy at close range.

Elden Ring Dragonmaw Notes and Tips

  • Updated to Patch 1.09.1 See Patch Notes for details.
  • If you quickly follow up with any dragon breath while standing on the ground you gain the float and lunge property of Dragonmaw, so as long as the pink fire effects around your character do not expire.
  • Deals more damage and has more hyper-armor than Dragonclaw, but the latter has a follow-up attack and can be chained into itself when power-stancing seals.
  • Enemies who have ground attacks such as Godfrey and Radagon can be dodged by a well-timed Dragonmaw.

after some calculations, found out that this has 5.66 incantation scaling which is insane, you can easly one shot people in arena with this badboy

Good for invasions or 3v3 chaos, but loses most of its usefulness in duels unless you're fighting a very dumb person

Nifty little visual glitch with this one, if you don't input any movement after casting dragonmaw, the startup animation for agheel's flame (or similar) is changed to that of dragonmaw's. Most people instinctively run away from dragonmaw, but run towards agheel's flame to punish. Do with that information what you will.

I hit someone in the arena for nearly 2k damage on my 45arc/30faith build this thing is nutty absolutely insane hyper armor and crazy damage balanced by the fact that it is rather slow and hard to land but when it hits it hits like a train love it.

This thing has ridiculous damage and easily accessed. Deal purely physical damage, gain ridiculous superarmor when used.

It appears Dragonmaw and Dragonclaw are 100% physical damage

Just tested both Dragonclaw and Dragonmaw at patch 1.07.1 on troll near Secluded Cell grace
Naked, Dragon Communion Seal (303 spell buff) resulted in 1970 damage
Equipping Magic Scorpion Charm and using Magic Crystal Tear don't increase damage of both spells
Holy, fire and lightning tears also don't increase damage

I think "Deals physical and slightly magic damage" in the article needs to be corrected

Absolutely amazing in pvp. One shot or almost one shot max level hosts with a **** ton of armor, if they’re spamming the breath incantations especially the mid air ones this is an amazing punish. Only downside is if someone charges you you fly right over them, looks kinda funny. You can also combo this with dragonclaw, cast dragon claw then maw. All around one of my favorite incants in the game.

Haven’t tested it on Waterfowl Dance yet but this will knock Melania on her ass every time it connects, not sure if it can knock her out of Waterfowl though. You could potentially stunlock her with this.

This is stupid good for duels. At lvl 150/60 arcane with dual dragon communion seals I’m hitting 1750s casually and one shotting most opponents. It takes a while to learn the timing and spacing but this thing slaps once you have it down.

My personal favorite "go screw yourself, would you kindly" incantation to deal with some plain bullshit game encounters. Interrupts even crucible knights (ate the duo crucible knights & crucible knight plus lion misbegotten "bosses" just fine heh), knocks omens on their asses. Can in fact hit several lined up targets as well. Correct spacing is the key. And in the worst cases - stacking of physical defense buffs so whoever you are fighting wouldnt kill you before the animation is over.

Besides doing some of the highest immediate damage in the game of all the spells, it does loads of poise damage as well, often staggering enemies to where you can get a follow up attack, or even another Munch. Just have to use good timing. Learn enemy attack patterns so you can imitate it immediately after baiting an attack to compensate for the long windup time.

Definitely one of those showy moves that makes you want to use it, but also wonder "where the hell am I supposed to use this?" A long cast time for huge damage, but on an arcane build you'd have bleed anyways to maul bosses, and on a faith build you'd have access to black flame incantations (or just a weapon with natural black flame, like Maliketh's). Why cast this when you can cast Flies, in both PvE and PvP? But who are we kidding -- you're totally going to try to chomp someone with this anyways, aren't you?

Already have The Claw... So, with a single heart, do I go with The Maw? Or, The Breath (Scrot or Elemental?) OR... Save it until I have a 2nd heart for "Smaug's Halitosis"?

I'm letting the cat out of the bag...dragonmaw absolutely slaps in PvP. You heard me. If you use any sort of dragon breath attack first then enemies will usually charge the second go around, that's where dragonmaw shines. It can be used situationally if you can time the range right. You also can adjust your aim a moderate amount while in air charging the attack. It's buffed by flame grant me strength, stack that with golden vow and 1 or 2 dragon communion seals and you will 1 hit everyone. I have killed dozens of people like this and can't remember a time it didn't 1 shot someone. 2k+ damage. Under used and oh so satisfying.

The amount of people I’ve one shot with this because they were expecting Agheel’s Flame only to get hit for like 2k damage is hilarious, since hardly anyone uses this in pvp people will panic roll when they see it which is pretty much just a free kill, plus it can be chain cast after dragonclaw which makes it a nice alternative to the normal follow up attack that it has

                                            • Anonymous

Got summoned in Leyndell and we were invaded, pulled this out as the invader took a sip to full health and one-shot him. The damage this thing does is just nuts.

I have a love hate relationship with dragonmaw. It is awesome when you surprise an enemy with it and two hit them. On the other hand... It is almost impossible to hit fast enemies with it. If the enemy moves more than a small amount it will miss them every time. Even large enemies jump around in this game so even a huge gargoyle will dodge it 90% of the time. The tracking on this ability is just terrible and you can't "git gud" and aim it yourself. This is very situational, but when it works, it will destroy enemies. I still use dragonclaw as my normal normal close range ability though.

                                                • Anonymous

Hyper armour now kicks ass, triple the damage of the claw throws most **** to the ground ignores some sort of defense because it goes through shields and iron virgin armour can poise break the kindred gargoyle in three bites

                                                  • Anonymous

So is there any reason to use this over the claw? Doesn't have a followup, isn't a grab or something fun to play around with like that, it isn't as fast as a basic melee attack to make up for the lack of followup, lack of range and mana cost, it's just ... kinda there.

                                                    • Anonymous

Since the damage is physical, does anyone know if the physical damage penalty of Silver Tear Mask applies to this incant?

Tested it vs Mask of Confidence. The Silver mask is significantly higher dmg, 2300 vs 2700. It doesn't look like the penalty is being applied to this incant but idk.

                                                      • Anonymous

Just a tip, from several forms of testing, I have deduced that this attack ignores absorption, but NOT defence. When used against a pumpkin head frontal facing it did exactly 1800, when used against the giant stone head ball in the converted fringe tower, it did 1660, when used against any boss it does more or less the exact same damage, so I believe it ignores absorption

                                                        • Anonymous

One of my favorite spells. Does massive damage. On a proper build can 1 shot elite enemies (if they do survive they need to recover from knockdown). Gives hyper armor, and looks awesome. Getting the timing down takes practice- well worth it once you have the stats and FP pool though. If an enemy does get close enough the spell will miss. I have also had it get blocked, but that's why Dragon Claw exist.

                                                            DWAGON CHOMP!

bruh seriously, this must be one of the best out there since it gives you super armor while casting it, removing the drawback of being a mage. At least you can always cast this spell (unless you're ded while casting it)

                                                            • Anonymous

Is this incantation any good? I’m going for a full dragon caster and was wondering if it was worth it? Especially with the high cost considering dragonfire and rot breath are the two best spells I’ve come across in the game so far
