Summons spirit of the Dung Eater

Dung Eater Puppet is a Spirit and Summon in Elden Ring. Dung Eater Puppet are used to summon the spirit of the Dung Eater.

Dung Eater can also be found as an NPC in Elden Ring. For more information, see Dung Eater.

One of Seluvis's puppets.
Use to summon the spirit of the Dung Eater.

Spirit of a man who murdered thousands and defiled their corpses with the Seedbed Curse.
Wields a spine greatsword and hurls curses.

The Dung Eater despaired at how he met his end.
How hideous and sinister this puppet is, and yet, its utter despair invites one to care for it.

Elden Ring Dung Eater Puppet Guide

  • To obtain the Dung Eater Puppet, start by beginning Ranni the Witch's quest at Ranni's Rise [Map link]
  • After speaking to Ranni, speak to the spirit versions of Iji, Blaidd, and Seluvis in her tower and exhaust each of their dialogues, then speak to Ranni again.
    • After speaking to Seluvis, he will reveal to you that you can meet him in his tower near by, where he resides in his tower directly south of Ranni's rise.
    • Going to his tower and speaking to him until his dialog is exhausted will have him give you a simple quest to find Nepheli and ensure she drinks Seluvis's Potion.
      • Do NOT use it on Nepheli. Instead, hold onto it until you progress the Dung Eater's questline far enough.
      • Progressing past the point in Ranni's Quest where you give her the Fingerslayer Blade will lock the player out of Dung Eater Ashes until NG+.
  • After you meet Seluvis, go a bit north, to the ruined building that's half way between Renna's Rise and Ranni's Rise. Roll over the flat stone floor in the top-most area, which will break the illusion and allow you to enter Seluvis's lab. Explore the lab and activate the glowing message. To it's left is another illusionary wall, which will reveal an additional secret chamber.
  • Now return to Seluvis and talk to him about this chamber you've found. This will allow you to pick a free puppet ash. This will also advance his questline.
  • Follow the Dung Eater questline, up until you're able to meet his real body tied to a chair in the sewer-gaol in the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds underneath Leyndell, Royal Capital. This will require progressing the main story to Altus Plateau and obtaining at least one Seedbed Curse, which you must show to him in Roundtable Hold so that he'll give you the key to his cell.
  • After you fight him in the Outer Moat, go find him tied to a chair in the sewer-gaol. Exhaust his dialogue, and the option to administer Seluvis's Potion will appear. Do so to trigger dialogue of the Dung Eater sounding worried. You are now finished with both the Dung Eater part of getting his puppet, the Dung Eater questline (as it can no longer be completed). You can also kill the Dung Eater right after administering the potion (don't leave or reset or his body will vanish) to obtain the Omen Set. If you do this, his body will not be found in Seluvis's laboratory, but you'll still be able to get his Ashes.
  • Return to Seluvis's Rise, and comment on the fact Nepheli hasn't appeared in his lab as a puppet. This makes him wonder if he didn't use the right ingredients.
  • Then, if the dialog option for getting your own puppet has not yet appeared in Seluvis's options, you may need to buy some of his sorceries, or possibly summon your free puppet, or possibly just leave the area and fast-travel back. It's a bit murky exactly what will trigger him to offer to sell you the Dung Eater Ashes.
  • Once he does, you'll need to bring him 5 Starlight Shards to purchase the Ashes.

I was able to buy the ashes w/ out buying any spells. I used the puppet he had given me earlier, went back to see him and it worked unlocked the dialogue option.

      • Anonymous

Just for clarification purpose: You can go to Nokron and get the fingerslayer Blade, just do not give it to Ranni before Seluvis offers you to buy the Dungeater. Afterwards doesnt matter Seluvis is Dead, you can still buy the dungeater for the Rest of the playtrough on seluvis corpse

Probably underrated because he's a 'secret' and harder to find, but definitely one of the best all-around summons and better than Tiche/Mimic for some playstyles and fights.

          Pros:
Holds aggro like no other - 'Woe of Shabriri' passive effect + hyperaggressive melee + ranged debuff + ranged projectiles.
Bleeds and helps player inflict status faster.
          Tanky.

          Cons:
          Smells bad.
          Eats dung.

Some in the comments are not on board with the gourmet, but you gotta understand - he's not the puppet you bring to burst down Elden Beast - he's the puppet you bring to bait the Elden Stars attack.

Yeah, I think this one's very overrated, he's relatively tanky, which is cool, but barely saw him doing any damage. Summoned him for the crucible duo fight and I took Ordovis out and he got completely demolished by the spear crucible and that was when I got him to +10. For the amount of FP that's needed to summon him, he really isn't that great imo.

            • Anonymous

I don't get the fuss. I was excited to get him and was very quickly let down. I got him to +10 and summoned him for a few different fights and was just baffled. He misses half of his hits. I don't get how he is touted as being a strong summon.

              • Anonymous

I didnt buy a single thing from seluvis, I didnt use the puppet summon, all I had to do to be able to purchase dungeater was quit out twice and then the option to buy him popped up. (after doing all appropriate steps to get dung eater puppet)

                • Anonymous

Why is there no information at all on this page about what exactly he does?? Only how to get his puppet, that's helpful for sure, but not enough! How does his debuff work? How much %, against what, for how long?

                  • Anonymous

Reloading the area didn't trigger the dialogue option to buy the dung eater from Seluvis, but buying one of his sorceries and then reloading the area did. I didn't have to summon the free puppet I got first.

                    • Anonymous

Literally a 2nd player that has one of the tankiest armor, has cool omen powers that melt poise, is super-agressive and won't just chill in the back while you fight, can take a full waterfowl dance in the face losing barely any health, can cause bleed and just overall probably the best summons available in the entire game (besides mimic tear ofc).

                      • Anonymous

There's no one more deserving of the eternal torture of being a puppet than the dung eater.
                        Seluvis takes a close second.

why is the upgrade material required not listed anywhere on this page? It is ghost for anyone else that came here for that simple information.

                          • Anonymous

to get the dung eater after completing the above, simply summon the first puppet you get and then return to him to unlock the Dung Eater for purchase

                            • Anonymous

truly underrated summon imo. at +10 holds aggro like a champ, hits like a mack truck, takes a licking and keeps on ticking. the omen bairn is the icing on the cake, a ranged attack for those who try to get away. with my sorcerer I tried both +10 dung and +10 tiche against malenia. wasn't even a contest. dung eater lasts longer, holds aggro better, does more dmg.

makes sense that he would be so good since you need to do a bunch of weird things to make him happen. but very much worth if you do.

He will consistently 1v1 Tiche in the arena. I have 60 duels played, I don't win every duel obviously, but Dung Eater always kills Tiche so long as my opponent doesn't intervene. He also wrecks mimic tear. I believe he may be the best Spirit Ashe for the Arena.

There is one little, but very important detail missing to unlock the dialog for bringing him 5 Starlight shards: you have to use the first cheap puppet once time in combat to go further. I finished all hints and wondered why the dialog doesn't appear afte buying all his spells. After a lttle research, i got this missing hint with the puppet in combat usage. I hope no one else get stuck at this point.

Talked to Seluvis after giving Poop Man the potion, but not before checking his lab, no extra dialogue. Any tips?

Very good if you have a bleed build. If you don't then meh as far as I'm concerned. Found many situations where he's outperformed by others.

bewarned: i did not know about giving the potion to Dungeater until AFTER i have already given it to Gideon, rendering it useless, do not make the same mistake as i did

                                        • Anonymous

I just saw Cowboy's video where he struggled with Malenia using Tiche. Then he took this puppet and Malenia went down in first attempt. Dung eater tanked her all the time and even survived until the end.

                                          • Anonymous

I managed to get both his armor and puppet by doing this:
Get him to sit on the chair in the sewer jail/gaol, the state where you can either give him a seedbed curse or the potion.
Idk if you *need* to have a seedbed curse in your inventory to open the prompt, but just let Blackguard die and you get that, plus the Sword of Milos, which is a nice bonus.
Give poop man the potion, and when he stops moving, kill him. You'll get the armor set.
Now, get Seluvis to sell you puppets and he'll be there. His body won't be in Seluvis' room, but his puppet will be available for sale.

Im trying to choose: this or black knife tiche. only catch is that i screwed up and locked myself out of this puppet. I was already going to NG, so I might as well try to get him. And now I can't decide because I dont want to waste money or time upgrading this if Tiche is going to turn out better, but I do like the dung eater. Here is wthe pros and cons Ive collected:

Pros (vs tiche): Better armor, likely higher health, debuff and bleed attacks, probably higher damage, and a lower FP cost.
Cons (vs tiche): Most certainly less agile, no blade of death attack.

I rely on those two cons when I'm fighting, and so I can't decide.

I only got the dung puppet summons yesterday, I have Omen killer Rollo and the mausoleum soldier ashes upgraded to +10 because I've had plenty of time to see what they are about but I upgraded the dung puppet ash to +10 pretty much based off what I'd been reading posted and commented about him. I don't remember seeing anything about him being a glass cannon and he was fine against the regal ancestor spirit boss, but I summoned him just past the night's sacred ground grace to help deal with all the silver tears, I was throwing volcano pots all over the place and I made sure he wasn't mobbed but he died a lot sooner than I was expecting and I had to kill the troll myself. So is the dung puppet summons way over hyped or is there something about these silver tear enemies that he cant cope with?

                                                • Okay so a fix for if seluvis doesn't offer the dung eater puppet, if you've beaten radahn just go to his grace and exhaust blaidds dialogue and it should fix it, hope this helps anyone else who got stuck :D

                                                  • Anonymous

I found the Dung Eater puppet by Sellen's, bought all Seluvis' sorceries, but am not getting a puppet -related prompt. I have reloaded the game and warped to other graces and still no dialogue change upon return. Grrr what gives?

                                                    • Anonymous

Seem to be most tank-y summon out of the box (yes i know you can tankify mimic tear, but a lot of effort and gear swaps and talisman swaps to get it). Keeps aggro, takes hits , but best is his Omen Bairn magic - it even hits invisible enemies in the area, making them glow yellow flame at significant range (just tested in Selia town)

                                                      • Anonymous

going by what is says here I wont need to do any of his quest to get him to drink the potion, as long as I have seedbed curse in my inventory, Is that right?

Also does anyone know how to get his sword and the puppet summons? I don't care about his armour but I want that sword. Is it a case of having to choose one or the other?

                                                        • Anonymous

Dung Eater tied up in the chair will not show prompt to give him Seluvis Potion, unless you have 1 or more Seedbed curse on you as well. Its a choice between one or the other.

                                                          • Anonymous

Careful not to attack dung eater tied to the chair. I was (still am) having trouble getting his summon because Seluvis is dead, and then I unequipped and punched him in the head in a moment of frustration. Boom, the punch did 3511 damage and killed him.

The church of vows won't forgive me either, but at least I have the diarrheas drip. Don't hit him early!

                                                            • Anonymous

You don’t need to buy all of his sorceries for the “I want a new puppet” option to become available. I just went and beat a boss, and when I came back I could buy the dung eater puppet.

                                                              • I tested Dung, Omenkiller, Amon, Tiche and Oleg at the Gatefront grace (where there is that large group of lower-level knights). At least for group fights like this, the ranking is:

Dung > Omenkiller > Oleg > Tiche and Amon

Omenkiller and Oleg had really similar performance but Amon was definitely the worst, once getting down to 20% health. Dung was the best. Against large groups of humanoid enemies, his rolling gave him more survivability. Tiche of course has the coolest move set but I found that he performance is the most variable. Sometimes she performs similar to Omenkiller and Oleg but once she almost died (~5% health left).

On top of that - I witnessed Dung pull off a critical hit. I've never seen any other summon do that. Perhaps Tiche does it too but I haven't seen it happen. So I wonder if it is something specific to puppets.

In terms of sheer survivability though, I think that Omenkiller and Oleg are the most "consistent".

Overall though, I would consider Dung, Omenkiller and Oleg to be S+ Tier (as well as Mimic if you have a good build). You really can't go wrong with any of these. Aside from Mimic, Dung is probably the best if you have a bleed build.

                                                                • Anonymous

It should be noted for anyone trying to get his puppet and armor that you can still get his armor if you simply hit and kill him after administering the potion. I was able to pick up both the armor and the puppet in the same run as the quest continues as if you never killed him with your weapon.

                                                                  • Anonymous

You can still get the dung eater puppet even after youve picked up the fingerslayer blade. I got him last night even though I had picked it up.

                                                                    • Anonymous

"Invites one to care for it" i feel nothing. This is even better than he deserved. Eternal slavery just MAY make up, in time, the generational damage he did.

                                                                      • Anonymous

"It is important you do not progress past this step with Ranni's quest. If you continue down Ranni's quest line and get the Fingerslayer Blade, you cannot get the Dung Eater as a puppet."

WRONG. I unlocked the Dung Eater puppet but didn't have enough starlight shards to buy it. Finished Ranni's quest completely (got Moonlight GS, fought Blaidd) then went back to Seluvis' corpse. There is an option to "Examine" it. Do that and you can buy ALL the puppets he offered for sale, i.e. Therolina, Jarhead and Dung Eater.

                                                                        • Anonymous

Kinda overrated imo. He doesn't seem to do very good damage himself, or with his crazy AOE shiz. Its not bad at all, and he is very survivable. But I didn't find him in the same tier as black knife tiche, as some seem to suggest.

                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                            • Anonymous

I didn't know that Selivus would die after giving the fingerslayer blade to Ranni. Safe to say I'm locked out of getting the puppet now? Because it won't even give me the option of giving him the potion.

                                                                              • 1. Get far enough in Ranni's questline to meet Seluvis and get his potion.
                                                                                2. Progress dung eater's questline to where you fight him. After he's done, he's back in his cell. Give him the dastard his trap.
                                                                                3. Discover Seluvis's pervert basement and confront him.
                                                                                4. Seluvis will give you a choice of two puppets, jar guy and healer chick. Just pick one and leave.
                                                                                5. Don't get the fingerslayer blade for Ranni yet (it'll ruin the chance to get Ol' Scat Scoffer).
                                                                                6. Just exhaust whatever dialogue Seluvis has whenever you return. He'll remain as long as you don't get the blade. I had heard you need to buy out all of his sorceries but he sold me Feces Fella well before I had done so.
                                                                                7. I think you have to pester Seluvis a couple times, he says something about you not being happy with just one puppet or something like that I think.
                                                                                8. Either way, if you fed him the potion, discovered Seluvis's molester dungeon, chose an initial puppet and DIDN'T yet return the blade to Ranni, eventually he'll sell you the puppet for 5 starlight shards. It took me some time where I just talked to him a few times. Not sure what triggered but I made sure not to get the blade until I got Dung Eater and he eventually had the option to buy him.
Good luck! This guy is borderline cheating.

                                                                                • I had been waving the Tiche flag endlessly. I used her in my 1st playthrough and she was by far my favorite and seemed objectively the best. Kristoff and Oleg were sorta close, I dont use the tear and nobody else was on that level.

But on my 2nd playthrough, I decided to give ol' Feces Feaster the Selivus treatment. Given S man's voice and demeanor, naturally I assumed that he merely wanted me to feed someone a puppet potion so he could keep them in his cellar to play with their butts, try tie their balls together and those sorts of things..y'know, the classic stuff. I thought, who would be a better playmate than a deeply mentally ill psychopath who loves poop, murder and banging his head against the stone wall? Nobody, of course. So while Selivus was expecting a young, virile woman so that he could try and tie HER balls together, I played a little prank on the old molester style wizard. I got an obese, filthy, sh*t encrusted maniac for him! What a zany goofster I was. No big deal though, still a human. I can't imagine the a fat, excrement covered lunatic's balls are all that different from a sane young woman's balls. But apparently, the special, spoiled prince of the kingdom Selivus didn't think dung eater was a suitable replacement for a lithe young woman.

So fast forward to today and I rescued Sh*t Stealer from the shelter. Yes, his identity has been dissolved and his conscious mind is trapped in an eternity of unfathomable hell...but he still seems to be a fun loving little guy. So Guano Gobbler was a puppet I was excited to test out. And holy hell he is amazing.
His staying power is miles beyond anyone else's barring a specced Mimic. I personally don't use the tear, so for actual characters or creatures, Crap Consumer seems to be easily the most durable. Tiche has him beat on damage but honestly not by a ton. Those two are the only summons I used that have done noticable damage in mid/endgame boss fights. But I play very high dmg, lower protection builds usually so summon dmg isn't a major concern.

But aside from durability and damage, how else do we compare summon quality? Of course, their behavior and aggression. Some very durable summons fall short in their aggression, movement and behavior. Lhutel, who I loved at first, got my killed in my 1st playthrough simply due to her seemingly losing interest in a boss. In the endgame with 20 vigor, that can and has been the end if it's a tough fight. But Poop Purveyor is a berserker! He never seems to lose aggro...honestly it's making some encounters in the end game a little too easy. I want a summon to offer some respite when necessary but fully tanking bosses like this is an MMO? Crazy.

So I won't say Diaherria Diner is THE best yet, I still need to see him vs the real endgame stuff...but he's surviving encounters that killed even Tiche om my first build. Again, his damage isn't quite as high but it's not too far off. He doesn't bloodhound step like her either but he just seems to get battered and beaten with a pretty minimal effect. The sphere shaped fatso just gets whipped around the boss arena and comes back with a red faced chubby rage that strikes fear and some laughter in the hearts of all.

But seriously, aside from my accurate, canonical retelling of how I acquired Sh*t Santa, I am serious about him being so good. Idk why he doesnt seem to be talked about with the Tiches and Mimic Tears. He is, without question, on that level and could be even better.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                                        • Anonymous

I did all the steps for the puppet and he wasn't showing up. Tried the suggested fixes you see everywhere... restarting the game, leaving the zone, picking up a startlight shard, revisiting the puppet room, pushing Ranni's quest a bit further, none of them worked. What did work for me was buying another puppet, taking it out and summoning it in a few fights, and then going back to Seluvis. At that point he asked if I was interested in additional puppets and boom, Dung Eater was available in addition to the other puppet.

                                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                                            • Anonymous

Though I had them all from my previous playthrough, I had to buy them again and after reloading, the prompt finally appeared and I could buy the Dung Eater puppet.

                                                                                              • Anonymous

                                                                                                  • Was he nerfed?? Him alongside black knife tiche and mimic tear they 3 were the most op summons.. Now mimic tear is just decent while dung eater seems to just be good for tankiness and lowering enemies defense.. I feel black knife Tiche is now the uncontested best spirit ashes

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

If you did this and didn't get the puppet summon, progress Ranni's questline until Selvis dies and you can buy the dung eater puppet from his corpse.

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

I tried reloading the area and that didn't work. I went and found the 5 starlight shards (I didn't have any before this) and that didn't work. It was only after I went back to his lab a second time that he gave me the option to ask for a new puppet. I was starting to worry that I accidentally locked myself out of getting this guy. Is this a bug, or did I just screw something up?

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

Well, I gave him the potion and killed him, looted armor. Not able to get puppet tho - no Dung Eater in Seluvis dungeon. No Dung Eater puppet offered by Seluvis either (only maiden/jar). Maybe I did not exhaust dialogue after giving him the potion - will never know until NG+.

                                                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                                                            • Anonymous

I wonder why there aren't more little quest detours like this. This option/quest is so specifically timed so that. 1. you are starting two NPC's quest (ranni/dung) and has to be done before you take the first step in one quest and after you gain the trust of another quest giver. It is so bizarre that you can only do something like this once (unless you count giving ranni the sleep potion). Anyway, I wish there was more things like this so that people could have insanely personal playthrus and we would have obscure hidden quest. Maybe there are more out there, i'll cross my fingermaiden.

                                                                                                              • Anonymous

I acquired the blade and then started the Dung Eater questline and had him drink the potion. His body showed up in Seluvis's hidden room and he allowed me to use starlight shards to buy.

                                                                                                                • Well, I dun goofd up by finishing the entire Ranni quest before I found his body... Cool how these quests interact with each other. And I murdered Bogart on sight for just not handing over the necklace. I guess it's going to be ng+ or 2 before I can get the dung ending and ashes. Crazy how much you can miss unless you're absolutely meticulous with these games.

                                                                                                                  • Anonymous

I put on claws and steam rolled the misbegotten warrior at redmane castle with him. He was almost dead due to bleed damage + stunlock, when the crucible knight arrived.

Other bosses which do massive melee damage and cant be staggered he has more problems with. (For example godfreys shade).

As soon as you give the dung eater the potion when he’s tied to the chair you have to kill him before reloading the area, after which he disappears.

Punch Blackguard until he becomes hostile. This prevents him from being considered for Dung Eater's invasion after releasing it from jail.
Make sure to keep away from the hostile Blackguard during the invasion so as to not accidentally kill him. Afterwards you can use a Celestial Dew to make him not hostile.

Reminder to everyone including the previous commenter that it is *not* necessary to choose between this or Boggart as long as:
                                                                                                                          1. You completely avoid interacting with Rya and Boggart until you get to Excrement Muncher and advance his questline until he's tied up in the chair
                                                                                                                          2. You don't set food in Volcano Manor which advances Rya's questline (cleaning up the rest of Mt. Gelmir is fine however)

Boggart only dies if he's at the moat during Faecal Connoisseur's invasion. If he's still in Liurnia, he'll be spared the gruesome fate, and after you've fed Poo Devourer the potion you can advance Boggart/Rya's questline as normal.

I exhausted all talks with Seluvius (after giving the potion to Dung Eater) and then i "killed" Seluvius, went to Church of Vows and got absolved. When i came back the option to ask for a puppet was avaliable

the main point of this is he can hurl curses at enemies. Cursed make them more vulnerale to bleed/poison/frost etc etc, not to mention he can bleed them out by himself with his own weapon. Still, Black knife summon is broken af and can solo most bosses with little to none help from the player

Honestly pretty strong but not as good as black knife Tiche who is probably the best for straight damage, while the puppet has the potential to do a ton of damage I often see him doing dumb things like slapping the boss with his left hand fist, and since hes actually a human summon I believe he can get caught in grab attacks and bleed unlike Tiche, though I could be wrong about that. I just know there's bosses like Loretta in Haligtree ive summoned +10 tiche for and he basically solod them, while for the same boss +10 dung eater puppet is struggling if I dont help but im sure with enough tries he could do it eventually.
