Erdtree Greatshield is a Greatshield in Elden Ring. The Erdtree Greatshield is a Shield that scales primarily with Strength and Faith. Greatshields weigh a decent amount and provide the best protection in the game. Greatshields provide a greater value of blocking and protecting one's self from enemy and boss attacks, but greatly increases the weight and reduces the player's mobility. This type of shield works best at reducing damage or guarding instead of parrying.

Weighty greatshield forged of gold carried by the order of Tree Sentinels, heavily equipped knights. Blessed by an old incantation of protection.

The living rampart of the Erdtree, the Tree Sentinels are the standard to which all defenders of the Erdtree aspire.

Where to Find Elden Ring Erdtree Greatshield

The Erdtree Greatshield Shield can be found at the following location:

  • Can be acquired by Killing Tree Sentinel Duo. [Elden Ring Map here]
  • Tree Sentinel Duo is a Foe Boss found in Altus Plateau, guarding the doors to the the Outer Wall Phantom Tree grace. You must defeat both Tree Sentinels to earn this shield.

Elden Ring Erdtree Greatshield Notes & Tips

  • Shield Skill: Golden Retaliation
  • Skill Description: Ready the shield to unleash its protective incantation. This will dispel sorceries and incantations, retaliating with golden power.
    • The active parry window is shorter than the animation that accompanies the ash of war. Try to press L2 so that the spell strikes right after you lift up the shield.
    • Due to recovery frames it is difficult to parry multiple spells cast by the same source. During PvP spells such as Glintstone Pebble and others with a similar cast-speed will likely give too little spacing between them to parry multiple spells in a row.
    • Ash of War damage scales with weapon upgrade level and marginally with the player's Faith, but not with any other stats.
    • The projectile deals reduced damage the farther it travels due to severe damage dropoff, but the Arrow's Reach Talisman can alleviate this. (In this case, the talisman only reduces the damage dropoff penalty, leaving the actual range of the projectile unchanged.)
    • Spells cast by the player can also be parried with Golden Retaliation provided they hit the shield. For example, the spell Discus of Light can be parried when it returns to the player, and the wraiths summoned by the Wraith Calling Bell can be parried as well by walking slightly forward before it floats towards its target. This allows the Ash of War to be used against any enemy rather than only casters.
  • This shield cannot be infused with Ashes of War.
  • Sell Value: item value icon elden ring wiki guide 18px500
  • Version 1.03 onwards: No longer activates when player is afflicted with damage over time.
  • NOTE: As of Patch 1.09, the scaling values of this weapon were changed. Please refer to the Upgrades Table of this weapon below.

this would be perfect for a Faith / Int Fundamentalist build with rings of light but it needs too much strength so if you wanna use it you gotta sacrifice some stats or talisman slots

It's sad that golden bullet can not parry again with golden retaliation.
I just want to play golden tennis and FROM not let me do.

        • Anonymous

I'm about halfway through a playthrough of maining this thing, and I absolutely love it. If you're interested in using this in PvE, just know that the parry is easy to do and reliable, but a very bad idea to use on attacks that consist of more than one projectile. Most of Rennala's spells and Mohg's blood throwing attacks are technically parriable, but most of them function like projectile shotguns, so you can parry one projectile, but the rest can and will hit you. Some powerful boss projectiles that can be very reliably parried with this include Loretta's Greatbow (NOT Mastery, the three other arrows will most likely hit you), Dragon Tree Sentinel's fireballs (But not his front blast on the ground), and Godskin's black flames. I've tried parrying other attacks that seem like they should be parriable, but either aren't or are way too hard to parry to be worth the effort (primarily Margit/Morgott's thrown knives and spears)

If you’re using this shield, keep a wraith ringing bell on your tool belt. It’s a super reliable way to proc golden retaliation solo.

              Mage: *shoots glintstone comet*
Me: *parry it with the shield and do half of the mages Hp bar*
Narrator: the mage is confused about what happen, he never seen this shield before nor have been countered in a way like this, but he knows better then to do another easy to parry attack again
Mage: *waits a bit….before shooting another comet*
Me: *parry it again and the mage dies*
Narrator: but the mage learned nothing.

I don't use this, but I have faced it occasionally. Come on, From, let the faith users parry things like Stars of Ruin. We owe them that much.

                • Anonymous

Fun fact: You can buff this with Scholar's Shield and Immutable Shield. I don't think you're supposed to be able to, as its a Unique Greatshield, but it works. Slap on Immutable Shield, Lord's Divine Fortification and Golden Vow, and tell Radagon to stuff his sacred lighting spears up his rear

                  • Anonymous

There is a mistake in the above information: just tested, and golden retaliation does scale off of faith, and not just upgrade level. (Tested using faith knot tear, discus of light to trigger, and an albinauric.)

                    • Anonymous

I wish this had an ash of war version so i don't have to lug around a giant golden manhole cover to send a wizards magic back at them (i know Carian retaliation exists but come on, it aint the same thing)

                      • Anonymous

Most beautiful shield in the entire game with stats gutted to the ground because of a gimmick PvP skill (and it doesn't even do a good job at that)

The Tree Sentinels were supposed to be the unbreakable bulwark of the Erdtree, but a +10 Erdtree Greatshield offer less guard boost than a +25 medium Brass Shield.

                        Ridiculous.

                        • Anonymous

I've confirmed that the damage of the spell reflected by the tree does affect the damage of the projectile shot by the shield. Tested against Godskin Apostle in windmill village. Reflecting my own discuss of light dealt 220 damage, but reflecting his fireball back at him dealt 490 damage.

Running this along w/ a Troll's Golden Sword and the Tree Sentinel Set on my RL150 "Golden Pursuer" build (homage to DS2) - it is effective and fun as hell as you basically become a golden battle tank. Build is below if anyone wants to give it a whirl:

                            Class: Prophet
                            Vigor: 55 (2037 HP)
                            Mind: 27 (158 FP)
                            Endurance: 40 (156 ST)
                            Strength: 30
                            Dexterity: 10
                            Intelligence: 7
                            Faith: 50
                            Arcane: 10

RH: Troll's Golden Sword - AoW: Golden Land
LH: Erdtree Greatshield (+10 for max Golden Retaliation AR)
Erdtree Seal (weightless and the incant scaling is well enough, plus it fits w/ the theme)

Talismans: Erdtree's Favor +2, Great-Jar's Arsenal, Dragoncrest Greatshield, Crimson Amber Medallion +2

Physick: Holy-Shrouded Cracked & Greenburst tears

Incants: Elden Stars, Golden Vow, Protection of the Erdtree, Erdtree Heal

Erdtree Greatshield provides a very effective counter against many spells, skills and incants - particularly against Moonveil and Stars of Ruin/other annoying sorcery spammers.

Golden Land has absurd hyper armor and all parts of it hit like a TRUCK, plus the darts provide a great set-up and synergy for Elden Stars to create a high damage bullet hell during which you can chase your enemy down while they're busy panic-rolling - rinse and repeat as you like.

Golden Vow and Protection of the Erdtree provide a further boost to your already absurd offensive and defensive stats; Erdtree Heal is particularly for PvE, or in case your opponent gets cheeky and heals during colosseum duels so you can then reciprocate in kind.

I recommend this build to any and all who can get down with the idea of becoming a Strength/Faith golden bullet hell juggernaut. It is so much fun.

I hate that it takes 30 str. I understand it's meant as a faith weapon and a greatshield at that, but the obvious fun build is to pair it with the golden order spells which are already stat heavy with both fth and int.

So that's three stats you need to build up heavily before even touching mind, endurance, or vigor. Hell I'd trade for the worst greatshield stats in the game if it meant it cut the strength for a pure fth requirement.

You can use the skill freely by parrying your own Discus of Light spell.
Discus of Light = 3 FP
                                Golden Retaliation = 4 FP
Surely, it's not much effective in real combat, but you can spend 7 FP for depleting a half of enemies' hp bar in one hit which is insane.

its a shame that the game's best spell spam defense is restricted to str builds. the black hole spell doesn't really cut it.

                                    I have a question
If cast a spell and the opponent parry it with this the upcoming spell back from this shield may I could parry it again with carian retaliation for example or not ?

I love this shield because it can't counter night comet so it is an easy one-shot for me everytime I see someone using that shield.

its fast enough to compete with moonveils insane speed, one of the few ways to deal with it in a gank scenario

Using this against Radagon/EB, I'm pretty sure i still take full damage from all of his holy attacks despite the "blocked" animation. Feature of the boss, or is that holy negation a lie?

The most reliable way for pure physical builds to defend themselves against magic. The fth requirement is practically not even there, just put on some faith boosting gear and you're all set. Only need a minimum of 20 str (if two handing) which is a little inconvenient but still manageable for dex builds.

You could retaliate your own spell. Something like that mini disc spell that will return after being cast. Very cool

They were kinda overzealous on shield nerfs and spell shield damage. I keep getting guard broken while reflecting spells and criticaled in invasions or coliseum by mages allies. And I have 40 endurance.

Dont see it mentioned here but did you know you can Golden Retaliation your summons? Just did it to a guy that was trying to loretta bow an invader.

                                                    TLDR of Golden Retaliation:
                                                    Scales with Weapon Level.
                                                    Does 100% Holy Damage.
                                                    (Scales with Faith)
Has a steep damage falloff range (Mostly negated by Arrow’s Reach Talisman)
Boosted by all applicable Global and Holy damage buffs.

This thing is great even just as a deterrent to moonveil spam. Once you pull it out the WA spam stops after the first counter.

                                                      • Anonymous

They definitely had to have nerfed this recently. It used to kill mages who weren’t full health but now landing it barely breaks 700 damage at 30 str 45 fth. Maybe they finally started leveling vigor?

Cannot parry ice spear, beast roar or beast sling or other beast incantations. Can parry pest threads, spectral lance, scouring black flame, whirl o flame. Needs testing against flame of red manes and flame strike. Extremely difficult to reflect glintstone pebble spell and frenzy machine gun type spells due to latency/start up delay and stagger. Count to 3 to parry carian phalanx. Use L2 to block melee attacks so you can roll catch with r2 instead of guard counter. You can backstep with shield up to escape dragon breaths, beast sling or frenzy machine gun with no penalties.

Interestingly, even though the WA doesn't scale well with your stats it seems to scale with the strength/potency of reflected spells, at least in pve. I've noticed that different spells of Loretta boss fight in Caria Manor dealt different damage when reflected, for example with greatshield at+5 glintstone phalanx dealt her around 300 dmg while her other spells including magic bow dealt 400-500 dmg.

I was helping a friend through Liurnia of the Lakes when we were invaded by a double Burger King Crown sorcerer spamming Glintstone Pebble. Reflected one at him and found out he put every last point he had into intelligence and not a single one into vigor. 10/10 would use again

How is mOoNvEil WA draw still faster than this?
This also needs a damage buff since it’s one of the only realistic counters for moonveil.

                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                  • Anonymous

The damage of the reflect is buffed by leveling up the weapon. Scales with faith but not with strength. (Scaling with faith is minimal, I was doing 1342 at 40 faith and 1377 at 45. +9 weapon.)
It also is buffed by Shard of Alexander and anything that boosts holy damage. Arrows reach talisman is essential as using it at anything outside melee range causes it to suffer from heavy fall off, this will guarantee full damage assuming it hits.

(patch 1.05 I'm not sure what else you could stack with it, but that buff set up is easy to maintain for a whole boss fight. Using ring of light for deflections)

                                                                    • Anonymous

Does anyone know exactly how the damage for this WA works?
I believe it scales with faith, but what about strength? Also does upgrading the shield boost reflect damage?

                                                                      • Anonymous

The Damage of Golden Retaliation does in fact scale with faith.
However the difference in damage between 25 and 80 FTH is around 325 damage; this is negligible due to a low faith setup with the correct buffs and RKR already deals over 3500 damage.
Also Arrows Reach Talisman does affect the damage falloff, however it does not seem to take effect at the projectiles max range - Most hits below max range however will be boosted to mitigate damage falloff.

                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                          • Anonymous

Can this parry pyro spells? I have no problem parrying sorceries or Moonlight Greatsword R2 etc, but every fireball thrown at me I can't seem to parry. It may be I am just skill impaired.

                                                                            • Anonymous

I run this as one of two shields I use for the Greatshield only build. The other is the One Eyed shield which shoots a big ass fireball. Its great for screwing with mages in duels lol

                                                                              • Anonymous

Heres a little tip from a friendly mage main to anyone that uses this shield: night comet (the dark projectile spell) completely goes thru without triggering the skill and fully charged can hit for 1000+ thru the shield with the right setup. You didn't mistime or miss it, night comet completely ignores the retaliation skill, so stop trying to spam the skill when you see this spell, you need to either side strafe or roll it. This shield is a double edged knowledge check in this regard and Ive killed people using this shield by just standing still and full charging night comet to bait the skill out and they just keep trying to get the skill off and nothing else while taking 1k damage per hit, I could feel their confusion thru the screen. This shield will destroy the smooth brain SoR spammers very easily (good riddance), but if you're fighting a mage that has a functional brain, please understand that this isn't a hard counter or invincibility mode, its a knowledge check for both players, and if you get too cocky with the retaliation skill you can get hard punished. If they are SoR spamming, then you can absolutely just spam the skill for a free kill lol(again, good riddance), but don't just assume you are completely immune to everything a mage can do while sitting still like a target dummy. Good luck and happy PvPing gamers

                                                                                • Anonymous

This + Wraith Calling Bell + discus of light slaps in PvE and is a totally different way to play. Lots of fun with minimal gear requirements. You technically only need 13 int/fth just to use discus, so there is a lot of build flexibility, like focusing on STR or FTH alone, instead of using the other Golden Order incantations. Add sacred scorpion charm and shard of Alexander and now you mean serious business. I hope they keep this in game, because it's easy to read and very fun.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

This thing is amazing. Great as advertised and also you can turn a cheap incantation like Discus of Light into a glorious extra blast.

                                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                                        • Anonymous

Quite a few meta spells as for example 'Honed Bolt' don't get deflected. With the typical net coding souls games have it can be difficult to pull this off in pvp.

But when you do, god does it feel great.

                                                                                                • Anonymous

Why is this? Carian Retaliation also says that it dispels magicks but you don't take damage from dispelling with that. Why would that happen with the Erdtree Greatshield?

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

Holy crap the salt, ignorance and misinformation on this item's page is a cut above everything else on this website. For anyone who doesn't get it; Shield was bugged when used in conjunction with Fire's Deadly Sin, as were multiple other "proc-when-damage-taken" effects. Bug was very funny haha for griefing in PvP, then it got fixed and now the guys who abused it are actually upset that an obvious glitch got fixed. In current year, the shield works as intended and is actually a fantastic shield for its weight, although the fixed ash will interfere with quite a few playstyles making it actually not super-well suited to continuous play (just bust it out when there's something casting spells). Just like the damage of other offensive shield ashes (shield crash etc) the damage of the WA is increased by weapon level, and if you want to get true value from this item (ie; actually deal damage with the projectile) then you will want to +25 it. The projectile damage scales with FAI and nothing else, tho weapon level is more important. The damage appears to not be pure sacred damage as I was able to damage Godfrey with it (first fight, golden boy, in non-ash capital) however this test was done using FDS pre-nerf (Godfrey doesn't cast spells so there's no way to proc it now). All-in-all this is a really neat little item that still has immense value, and is a suitable reward for a not-so-simple mid-game field battle that most people will skip the first time they get there.

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

Big tip for PVP, hardswap into this instead of using it the whole time. Eternal Darkness absorbs its projectiles so sorcerers can counter your counter if you telegraph it or they can just use the carian spells. Stars of Ruin and especially Elden Stars is basically an auto-win for you if you do this unless they have bloodhound’s step.

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

Just a note for anybody wondering, upgrading the shield does in fact have a noticeable difference on the damage of the WA. At 15 FTH damage went from 190 to ~260 after just one upgrade, although damage fluctuated a little bit. Seems range has a pretty big effect on damage, the drop off is kinda steep over longer distances.
