Causes ghostflame explosion that burns wide area
![]() |
Explosive Ghostflame is a Sorcery in Elden Ring. Explosive Ghostflame spell causes burning to surrounding area when cast. Updated to Patch 1.07.
Sorcery of the servants of Death.
Strike the ground with the staff, triggering an explosion of ghostflame that burns the surrounding area.
In the time when there was no Erdtree, death was burned in ghostflame. Deathbirds were the keepers of that fire.
Where to find Explosive Ghostflame
Where to find Explosive Ghostflame:
- Drops from a Death Rite Bird southeast Apostate Derelict in the Consecrated Snowfield. It's a clearing in the frozen river, and you must go there at night. [Map Link]
Elden Ring Explosive Ghostflame Guide
- Death Sorcery
- Can be boosted by Prince of Death's Staff
- Stamina Cost: 45
- Deals magic damage
- Inflicts Frostbite on opponents. Initial explosion deals 130 and flames deal 38 per tick
- When casting, the caster holds their staff in two hands and thrusts it into the ground, generating an explosion and leaving patches of ghostflame on the ground. The initial explosion has good knockback, and the fire may be good for zoning enemy players in PvP, but overall this spell deals weak damage for the FP cost and leaves the caster vulnerable.
- NOTE: This skill was changed with Patch 1.07 as follows:
- The Frostbite buildup of this spell was significantly increased - the initial explosion frost buildup was increased from 50 to 130 and the lingering ghostflame was increased from 28 frost buildup per tick to 38 per tick.
- The attack power of the spell has been increased.
- The stamina damage done to guarding enemies has been increased.
- The range of the residual ghostflame left after the explosion has been increased.
- The damage detection time of the lingering ghostflame has been reduced.

Unless yall are using the Prince of Death staff at 80/80 then otherwise you should be just going the bare minimum for faith unless you're also using incantations and use the Lusats staff while duel wielding the Prince of Death staff just for the boost. This will make it a lot better.
Stopping anywhere under 60/60 with the Prince of Death staff is just gonna give you lackluster damage output.

Every time I hear the name of this spell I think of sitting on the toilet the morning after eating a hot curry. And when the Death Rite Bird hits me with it, that's exactly how I feel.
- Anonymous
people saying zamor storm is better which is true BUT y’all forgetting about cool factor
- Anonymous
Literally worse in every conceivable way compared to zamora icestorm, this **** really needs more buffs especially considering the ridiculous min stats to use it.
- Anonymous
The only ghostflame spell i like. Looks cool, hits quite hard, flames stay for quite some time and buils frost easily. Two things i dont like is the fact you cant charge it (zamr ice storm and gelmirs fury being alternatives, can either be charged or prolonged) and too long recovery after the cast.
- Anonymous
feels like it would work good with a sword of night and flame build since you're already splitting your stats in those directions... otherwise not very viable
- Anonymous
"nah guys, this spell/weapon/Incant/aow/ slaps you just gotta be at like level 300 with 99 points in two stats and use like three talisman slots to make it viable".
I see so many comments like this lol

Very strong at max level PVP. All the meta level players have no idea.
- Anonymous
Wanna make someone suffer in pvp with this spell!? Well I'll teach you how! :D
All you need is good vigor and decent enough armor, a weapon with endure, and then 99 fai/int on a prince of death staff, fully charge the spell if the player is aggressive, and destroy lives. Works very well for 3v3 or 6 player free for all arenas, where people are often very aggressive, I've killed 3 players at once before with the spell (not exclusively the blast alone, the flames on the ground after finished off one of them), personal favorite spell if you can use it right
- Anonymous
This spell is still kinda sad. damage is just not good enough for fp cost and speed and stat requirement, and int faith builds are already just sad...
- Anonymous
This **** oneshots in pvp
99 int
talismans: both graven + magic scorpion + godfrey
terra magica
knowledge above all
both hands lusat
i just spam ramdom **** (colapsing stars works well bc the anymation is the same) and act like i dont want them to get close, when they get close charge this **** and instakill, and if not they will die due to magic downpour.
- Anonymous
Combine with the Endure ash of war = Watch as helpless foes fail to contain the impending destruction.
- Anonymous
On a 45-45 int-faith PvP build, it sometimes doesn't even deal half the enemy's hp. For a spell with such long recovery time and cast speed, that's simply abysmal. I guess it could be good on a treebranch with the leaden hardtear and the crimsonwhorl, but still it only does as much as a simple rejection incantation would.
- Anonymous
Not a fan of the recovery time. Rather Fromsoft double the fp cost than have that slow ass recovery time. Other than that this spell is pretty great in the right hands. Death sorceries are probably the most misunderstood class of sorceries in the game. They kick ass if you know how they work and fully utilize them.
- Anonymous
Somebody invaded me with this sorcery, killed 2 hunters and 2 cooperators + me in a manner of seconds. I've got 50 vigor.
How is this **** so strong??
- Anonymous
A little rough getting hit with a powerstanced ultra greatsword jump attack during your anime af recovery animation but outside of that, S tier spell for me
- Anonymous
This spell kicks ass with the buffs. Throwing out ancient death rancor encourages people to try and rush you, and when you cast this afterwards it looks almost identical to zamor ice storm and people are caught off guard when they're blasted out of the air. The damage isn't anything craz, but being knocked on their ass and inflicted with frost surrounded by fire sends most into a panic, making for an easy finish with a death's poker or really anything else at all.
11/10 for psychological warfare, would commit war crimes again
- Anonymous
This combined with endure and ancient death rancor has been an unbeatable combo for me. I keep killing duelists and invaders with this . No loss so far. Amazing combo. And I’m a pretty **** pvp player so there’s that.

Horrible sorcerers will say this is a bad spell, good sorcerers know that there are nasty combos that include this spell...
- Anonymous
This spell is still pretty bad after patch 1.07 due to high stat requirements and slow recovery time. It can knock down enemies, but it's not enough to be worth the cost. Better to use Zamor Ice Storm since that spell was buffed too.

(Patch 1.07) Some people are saying this is decent or even considered a good spell but I disagree. The incantation Radagon's Rings of Light serves a very similar purpose as this spell with little to no drawbacks. Let me just give you a list; Radagon's Rings of Light about twice the range, About the same damage at full charge not including the flames damage. You can also roll immediately after the cast and doesn't leave you to a free back stab, requires less stat investment and is way more likely to land in pvp. Another note is the flames left by Explosive Ghost Flame are almost good doing about 2000 damage with the Prince of Death Staff at +10 with 79 in both int and faith to the Giant in Secluded Cell in Limgrave but the fun thing is that the star pattern the flames go out in randomly jet from the character so you can't even master that part of spell to use the flames. You are better off using the Deaths Poker if you want to play around with Ghost Flame and the best part it requires way less stat investment to use, the flames do 3400+ damage (the giant died before the flames dissipated) and the recovery time on the ash of war is near instant after the cast. Hope they continue to buff this spell and make it worth it because I like the "Idea" of this spell and wish to add it to my build.
- Anonymous
Patch 1.07 did some really appreciable improvements to this spell, and it feels properly powerful for pulling off against groups of enemies as well as when used against large enemies.
- Anonymous
Collapsing Star when they’re juuuust far enough away and then BLAT. Freezer-burned smores.
- Anonymous
With the right build you can get some good damage, I’m doing a magic man build and with 75 in both faith and intelligence and with the staff it did a good 1000 damage
- Anonymous
The agony of the stat investment basically means you can only have faith and int but basically nothing else.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
I think they cut content to give the DLC more oompf, should be packed with occult, lightning & sacred spells
- Anonymous
Okay, but does it do anything cool if I hit it with Death's Poker?
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
I'm going to try chain casting this bad boy, I will report back.
- Anonymous
For those complaining about ANY spell not having poise; just put Endure on your main hand and staff in your off hand, use the skill then the spell... Problem solved.
- Anonymous
They should've made its Faith requirement way less for this to be viable, or at least they should've put some weapons that can scale with int and faith so that at least the stat investment had more initiative.
- Anonymous
72 stats of investment for a spell that takes 9 years to cast and does about the same damage as Comet. Not worth it in any context
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Underrated spell. Works wonders in pvp as a finisher. Just need some brain and bait a bit^^
- Anonymous
I haven't seen this mentioned yet, but counter intuitively, to me at least, it does more damage based on how close to the edge of the blast they are. If they are up in your face, does way less
- Anonymous
After the buff, the spell went from 'unusable' to 'mediocre'. Needs another cast speed reduction as well as a slight damage buff
- Anonymous
Just use Zamor Ice storm, it has charging so can boost damage and does more damage, less cast time, and better at applying frostbite...I just dont get what they were going for here. Make lingering flames last longer, quicker cast and give it a better frostbite application.

I've had some success with this spell against invaders post patch 1.04. You need to use Tibia Summons first to mess with their expectations and then they'll run right into this since the casting animations look the same.
- Anonymous
Still has one of the longest start ups of any spell, needs to be cast at close range, and has zero extra poise during casting. All ingredients for a spell that feels terrible to actually use.
- Anonymous
this spell is still trash after patch and other death sorceries need a pick me up as well, also I can't seem to post anything while logged in
- ACEXULTRA
- Anonymous
The casting time is too long as of 1.04 for what it does.
IF you can use it to start a fight with a slow or non moving target it's not too bad, but other than that it has no use.
- Anonymous
Still pretty terrible post patch, cast time is too long for how low damage/utility this one is. I dont get what the purpose of this spell is and didnt get a poise buff like lightning.
- Anonymous
For patch 1.04, FP cost changed 36 -> 29 and the ridiculously long recovery time was cut in half. This may be a decent AoE spell now.
- Anonymous
We need two things. 1. more necromancies 2. Buff present necromancies so they hold up better in fights
- Anonymous
This could be one of the best spells if only the recovery wasnt so long. It also seems to leave way weaker trails than say Death Poker.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
I carry this spell around on my hexer character because it's one of the few death spells in the game. It's proven useful for cheesing enemies through walls when you can't apply Night Maiden's Mist without hitting yourself
- Anonymous
This spell is a cool concept but again another ghostflame spell that doesnt seem to work. Frost buildup is 0 to nonexistent on the lingering trails if you compare it to Death's Poker, plus the trails damage is no where near Death's Poker. Why are all of these death sorceries so weak compared to the 2 weapons that use ghost flame and do respectable frost buildup. I really hope these spells get a slight buff soon, I love the death sorcery build concept.
From the time you hit the button to the time you can roll away is about 6 seconds exactly, and doesn't seem to change a single bit with or without Radagon Icon. Terrible damage for the obscenely long casting and recovery time. Also funnily enough, the Academy Glintstone Staff at 54/30 Int/Faith deals more damage than Prince of Death's Staff at 42/42 Int/Faith, despite boosting death sorceries. Don't even get me started on the other Ghostflame gear, such as Ghostflame Torch or Helphen's Steeple, which both scale off of only Intelligence despite this spell and the other Death spells having Int/Faith requirements. Honestly baffling design decisions.
- Anonymous
I know Ghostflame usually causes frostbite build up. This spell states burns the area does anyone know if this quickly removes frostbite for quicker reapplication like regular burning?
- Anonymous
Shouldn't require faith... These death sorceries might be passable if they were just pure int and didn't require the player to make a build uniquely for them, and the death weapons (family heads, deaths poker, ritual spear) scale off dex/str way harder than int, and not at all off faith. I have no idea how I'm supposed to build my dark sorcerer, it seems like I have to slap points in literally every stat just to use some mediocre spells.
- Anonymous
Depressingly weak for its requirements and how late it is. Lingering fire only lasts a few seconds.
- Anonymous
This does cause frostbite. I'm not sure if it's the explosion or the ghost flame trails, but I inflicted frostbite in 2 casts on a black candlestick man-serpent near Temple of Eigley grace. Stats were 50 Int/52 Faith on +25 Prince of Death Staff.

I'm running a Full Assassin Dark Mage Build , and this Spell is a must when considering AoE damage and the Ghostflame actually still Lingers afterwards for some Extra DoT damage.... Altho High FP Consumption with a slow casting time. ( Having Radagon's Icon is a must with pretty much most good Spells , and with Lusat's Staff at +10 this thing Hits like a Truck can kill Bosses fairly easy , and leaves big Bosses hopeless with the Ghostflame lol ). Highly advise you use this only with Radagon's Icon at hand and with Lusat's staff for insane damage... Otherwise just sticking with Ancient Death Rancor and Rancorcall is also a pretty good option with my particular Build. ( Altho i gotta say , i'm heavily boosted just entered Mountaintop of Giants at Level 245 now still in NG ). And with my fully equipped Dex/INT build being a Dark Assassin Death Mage is pretty nice.... As for Rancorcall its debateable. Since Ancient Death Rancor is much better in terms of Damage and this Ghostflame Explosion is a must aswell. ( This Spell also 1 shots pesky annoying small enemies that rush you up , mostly any guards , imps and even late-game foot soldier enemies given that your at 80 INT and have a +10 Special Staff lol ).

Unfortunately this spell is basically useless in PvP. Tested online, even with a direct hit on another player the recovery of the spell is so long that your opponent has enough time to get up from the hit and backstab you before you can move. The only time you will ever not be punished for using this spell is if the other player does not know about the recovery or you kill them with it, but since the damage is also quite low for such a slow casting spell the latter is unlikely.
- Anonymous
Has anyone confirmed whether or not this spell does fire or magic damage. I think a lot of the ghostflame affects in the game do magic damage but I could be wrong.
- Anonymous
This has gank spank potential as long as your main hand weapon has the Endure Ash of War to poise cast through the group’s hits.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
What is the point of having sorceries with Faith requirements? Just about every viable build uses one or the other. Shame that almost nobody will ever get to use these spells until like NG8 lol
- Anonymous
It's a pretty big AoE around the caster that leaves lingering flames for a few seconds. However the mana cost is high, the damage is average even with Prince of Death's Staff and recovery time is very high. Only worth using against large numbers of enemies, but there are better spells that do the same thing.
- Anonymous
I have a theory that the Erdtree is the original kiln of the first flame.
What if the age of no erdtree was the combination of the age of dark and the age of fire (from dark souls), creating ghostflame :0
- Anonymous
sadly pretty bad, the damage is okay but it leaves you in an absurdly high recovery meaning you get punished most of the time.
- Anonymous
Good radius and pretty strong, but it's a bit slow to cast imo.
Hands down hardest boss in the game in my opinion, not even close. Can't use summons, attacks hit 1000+, horse dies in 2 hits, this is up there in difficulty with Shinobi the Owl in Sekiro.

this is the only sorcery in the game that hasn't had its location discovered yet

Drop from Death Rite Bird found next to Apostate Derelict. Boss only spawns at night, and spawns in a little clearing in the frozen river.

Has anyone found this yet? I assume it drops from a Deathbird, but out of thr 6 I've found so far, none of them have had this spell.

Dropped from a Death Rite Bird found in the Consecrated Ground zone, Northwest from the Ordina Liturgical Town Site of Grace. Spawns at the end of the frozen river at night.

In all honesty if it wasn't for that painfully slow recovery then this would be absolutely busted. Used it against Malenia and it hit for 4k+ damage.
It's just so risky to use sadly.
