Gargoyle's Blackblade is a Greatsword in Elden Ring. The Gargoyle's Blackblade scales primarily with FaithStrength and Dexterity and is a good Weapon for dealing Holy Damage and the ability to launch the weapon as a projectile due to it's unique skill, Corpse Wax Cutter

Bronze greatsword wielded by Valiant Gargoyles mended with blackened corpse wax. Deals holy damage.

Such is the mark of those who serve Maliketh, the Black Blade.

An easy strategy to acquire this sword early is to pull the gargoyle to the door of the bestial sanctum, boss cannot pass the door so you can cheese it with Night Maiden's Mist. Put a mist and hide behind a pillar to avoid the roar. Rince and repeat.
The 14 int requirement for the spell can be reach by using the Godric rune (+5 all stat) if not enough just add Marika's Scarseal.

For maximum greed use Gold Scarab and Gold-Pickled Fowl Foot and enjoy easy cash (around 135k runes) and the cool weapons the boss drop

      • BB's weapon art still wins out by having better damage type and heal passive and stuff, but this is better for coop or vs higher ng bosses who have loads of hp. It is also better in pvp since it's faster. Also can be acquired in like first 30 min of a playthrough. Doesn't knock people down and has no hyperarmor, tho.

        • Anonymous

somehow better than the golden order gs in terms of holy damage despite having worse scaling, who approves this stuff?

          • Anonymous

This is better than blasphemous blade imo since this scales with hp, meaning holy resist doesnt really mean much to it.
Must not forget that the AOW looks way better than splitting the ground and releasing lava

            • Anonymous

Very fun with strength/faith. Super high elemental damage makes it good against knight types and the black blade skill gets better the more health an enemy has

Lands Between Trivia #819: spam the Corpse Wax Cutter skill 3 times at close range against the average enemy to automatically enter STAGGER TOWN, 4-5 times with bosses

I think this weapon is now named Maliketh's Black Blade. I got it off the Black Blade Kindred in front of the Bestial Sanctum. It now has "Destined Death" as its Unique Skill.

Another option is the Gargoyle's Black Blade (It's NOT the same blade as being discussed in this section, which is, I suspect, why they changed the name to Maliketh's Black Blade). This Gargoyle's Black Blade is a Twinblade, that matches up reall well with the Gargoyle's Heavy Twinblade.

I like the twinblades a lot. The Gargoyle's Black Blade (twinblade) does a lot of holy damage.

Honestly, any Greatsword with this 1handed R2 is amazing. It was amazing before, but with the poise changes? It's fantastic.

Try more often, you'll be surprised at how good it is. Especially with the longest Greatswords like the Knight's and the Sacred Relic. ***h scale better off dex too.

First playthrough I cheesed the black blade kindred at bestial sanctum as a lvl 20 faith build, weapon easily carried me to leyndell, fantastic faith weapon

You can tell that the 3 gargoyle weapons were supposed to be infusable and their black counterpart were supposed to have a unique ash of war. Looks like Fromsoft kinda gave up or didn't have the time to finish them before release. Too bad this sword is the only one with a unique ash of war. Imagine how cool it would have been for the twinblade to have that spinning plunge attack of the black blade kindred and the axe to have that roar and enhance heavy attacks with that ground explosion that applies the DOT effect. Fromsoft pls!

                        • Anonymous

Hey guys tried using this but the ash of war only does like 950 on a 200 level build. Anyone have any advice on a build to beast out it's damage and any tricks? Thanks all

                          • Anonymous

Incredible weapon and weapon skill. Don't be allergic to the fact that it's holy damage. It doesnt mean **** for the max % hp DoT.

You can grab this weapon even before Stormveil (to get the Black Flame ball) by using the Black Knife instead.

Also the 2H running R2 comes out fast, even faster than the 1H version.
                            Give it a try.

                            • Anonymous

Black Flame FP Cost = 18. Scouring Black Flame FP Cost = 21. Noble Presence FP Cost = 20. Black Flame Ritual FP Cost = 30. Corpse Wax Cutter FP Cost = 16. This only requires 2 Faith more to be able to use over Black Flame, costs less FP, travels faster, and can have its FP reduced with the Carian Filigreed Crest with no downside unlike the Incantation Scarab helm. Downside is the projectile cannot fly over objects and terrain and can sometimes snag a rock and vanish. Is pure Holy damage, so can be used in conjunction with Black Flame to take on various foes to cover for their resistances, such as Magma Wyrms and Volcano Manor Serpents being highly fire resistant and fire invulnerable respectively, and Death Birds being highly weak to Holy damage from CWC, with Black Flame useful against bosses with high Holy resistances.

after 400 hours this is the first greatsword i'm using XD
the skill is devastating and is now one of my new favorite weapons

Using this on a 50/50 str/fth build and it cuts everything down with ease. Too bad the other black gargoyle weapons are cheeks

                                  • Anonymous

Corpse Wax Cutters black flame burn effect deals 2.5% of the enemies max health. Don't believe me?

Make a new character, get Black Flame, cheese the Gargoyle to get the Gargoyle Blacl Blade.

Go find Greyroll and test Black Flame to Corse Wax Cutter.

I used a Clawmark Seal+4 and a Gargoyle Black Blade+2 for this test, had minimum stats to use both.

Black Flame - about 2200 damage
Corpse Wax Cutter - about 2070 damage.

pretty easy to get early if you're patient with black flame spells. use the sanctum as cover and slowly whittle away at him with black flame

                                      • Anonymous

This thing destroys dragons cuz the blade beam can travel at an upwards angle allowing you to headshot dragons ridiculously easily. I prefer it over blasphemous blade purely because it looks cooler. Is great dual wielding with blas blade.

                                        • Anonymous

Love how they buffed the ash of war. Hate how they left it with the black flame effect instead of the dark red one it uses on every other attack.

                                          • Anonymous

On my lvl 1 wretch (usable via radagons sorseal, two fingers talisman and faith cracked tear then 2 handed) has over 800 ar with golden vow and sacred scorpion charm which is allot of AR for a lvl 1 character, plus the weapon art has the useful black flame dot and comes on faster than the black knife which helps overall survivability allot to get back to dodging quivker, great for taking down late game bosses at lvl 1 if you are into that sort of thing

                                            • Anonymous

I personally don't enjoy the weapon. It has the standard boring greatsword move-set, split holy damage is the worst (duo to most bosses having higher holy resistances) and the weapon art is the weakest of all the black-knife/red-black fire ones.
Besides that: The weapon isn't necessarily bad. But duo to the high amount of choices when it comes to split faith scaling weapons - I wouldn't necessarily advice to pick this one. There is better stuff out there.
If you still feel interested in testing that weapon, I would agree with the other commentator a bit below me: The black flame fireball strategy worked out great. Killed him at level 50'ish with like 5 mana flasks just doing the fireballs.

                                              • Anonymous

the original tip of this weapon is part of the gargoyle's greatsword. it looks like a much nicer bronze, and the weapon itself doesn't have faith scaling. the skills are pretty similar too, vacuum slice is like a not-holy version of the corpse wax cutter; or maybe corpse wax cutter is just a death version of vacuum slice. i guess being in league with maliketh, and the proximity to the rune of destined death makes some adjustments.

interesting that both weapons were mended with corpse wax, but only this one suffered from it. makes me think that despite the name of the skill, corpse wax isn't the source of that death damage, and maybe its the devotion to maliketh, or the rune of death, that blackens a blade.

                                                • Anonymous

You can get this fairly early if you have the patience to throw about 25-30 black flame fireballs over the course of 30 minutes. Simply throw one (or two) at the gargoyle's back, immediately run into the sanctum and crouch behind the second pillar to the right (looking at Gurranq from the doors). Afterwards, wait for him to reset his position (he will always walk to the door twice) and then repeat.
On an unrelated note, the AoW can easily hit the head of a dragon and does quite a bit of posture damage, enough to break its posture if you start spamming it while it's doing the the roar they always do when the first see you.

                                                  • Anonymous

Different uses than blasphemous blade and comparing this weapon to that sword is like comparing moonveil a regular magic katana with unsheathe. This thing is actually not bad. Takers flame just happens to be 1 of the few busted AoWs that haven't been toned down yet

                                                    • Anonymous

AoW beam has been fixed; before the beam was mostly influenced by the height of your camera, which would increase or reduce its range tremendously, making the optimal way to use the weapons Ash to lock off and fire high. Now it has its full range regardless

                                                      • Anonymous

Got this sword today in a second playthrough and im loving it, seeing alot of negative comments in here about it but its pretty good great AR medium distance AOW that you can tear off at a distance. Maybe it was buffed but the ash goes longer distance then moonveil for sure contrary to what some others were saying...aim upwards with it or target lock without doing that it tends to slam right into the ground by your feet.

Only downside is the holy damage elden beast wont be much fun

Just get blasphemous blade, even though this sword looks cooler the weapon art is such a downgrade that its not even funny

                                                          • Anonymous

Sadly probably the only worthwhile "Black Blade" weapon, mainly because they actually bothered to give it a cool weapon art, unlike the other ones which just got completely shafted being stuck permanently with standard weapon arts with nothing unique about them.

                                                            • Anonymous

this weapon is cool, its s shame the other black gargoyle weapons are so lazy, with completely ordinary ashes of war

                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                  • ok but why is the skill just a worse Taker's Flames. if anything it made the blasphemous blade more underwhelming when i got it later to see a re-used skill for a remembrance weapon

                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                      • Anonymous

For whatever reason, this is the only Blackblade Kindred weapon to have the black blade effect in its weapon art. If you're going to use a Black Kindred weapon, the %-based burn damage this one's WA deals is well worth it compared to the others. Why they couldn't add a black flame effect to the spin slash/war cry'd attacks the others use is past me.

                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                          • Anonymous

Great-Jar's Arsenal and Claw Talisman are a must, gotta have that heavy armor and heavy jump attacks. Put this one in the right hand for the better AoW when you want a little range and have fun spamming L1 and L2!

This AoW needs a 20-25% range increase and it would be great. It's basically the same ash as moonViel but low range. With so many huge bosses in the game range becomes kind of important to everything you do.

                                                                              • Anonymous

The Corpse Wax Cutter has a hidden black flame-like health sapping effect that sap the enemy of 2% health over 2 seconds. Just like black flame incantations, it does not stack with itself no matter how fast you recast it.

                                                                                • Anonymous

Playing my second run with a new character using a faith/str build, I got this by killing pretty early game with black flame incantation the gargoyle... and man, I love this weapon.
It does a lot of damage at least in early to midgame, sadly it has to be replaced at the endgame because every boss have extremely high resistance to holy damage.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

Good early alternative to blasphemous blade. And can act as an alternative to deal with fire resistant enemies. (Although incantations / black knife / halo scythe might be better options, depending on your build)

                                                                                    • Anonymous

Okay, I love this so far. I've tried a variety of heavier faith weapons, and this one, in my opinion, at about lvl 100-110 PVP is one of the best. Not because it deals a lot of damage, which is fairly okay, but because the base damage is pretty high.

With this, you can play it at almost base stats and dump almost everything else to vigor, some on endurance to equip heavier armor, a little bit in mind to be able to try and roll catch with the weapon art (doesn't work often unless the opponent is panic rolling), and then left over points go into either strength or faith, depending if you plan to use other incantations or if you just want raw damage.

The damage is definitely not the highest you can get on a dedicated DPS build, but you can definitely last very long trading thanks to your tankiness, and in current PVP meta where everyone is just focusing on 80 int for moonveil and not getting a lot of HP, your damage is good enough for the average enemy.

Lastly, the weapon art isn't easy to hit given how slow it is, but when it hits, boy does it hit hard. Currently I deal about 330-400 damage per hit depending on how armored my opponent is, the weapon art easily breaks 800 damage, and I've had it deal 1100 damage if both the projectile and the blade hit.

Would recommend, IMO a C tier or a B tier weapon. There's definitely better weapons, but there's way, way more worse weapons next to this beauty.

                                                                                      • Anonymous

Saying this sword is a worse Blasphemous Blade is an oversight. Blasphemous Blade has C/C/B while this has a C/D/D, lower requirements and way higher BASE damage (Blasphemous has 487 base damage at +10, while Gargoyle's Blackblade has 547). This is clearly a weapon for high STR builds with little investment in Faith, while Blasphemous is intended for high investment Faith builds.

                                                                                        • Anonymous

Not gonna deny it, I cheesed the boss just to get this weapon. With humble 20 str/27fth, +3 it does more damage than my +7 Claymore.

However, the R2 attack is rather disappointing, both 1h and 2h. 1h "pancake" is not a real pancake, 2h horizontal swing is just meh overall. If this weapon had a poke R2, it would've been great. Otherwise, it's a tossup between this, Claymore and Great Mace for me.

                                                                                          • Anonymous

I play at 4K with max textures and close/med you can see that this Sword model could have really used a higher polygon and texture model. Great weapon and good weapon art though. Also this one does not bounce off miners (hardened foes in mines) unlike Halberds (which bounce even though similarly large in size).

                                                                                                    • I think the DoT on the weapon art does % max hp damage meaning it could be better than blasphemous blade at very high ng progression against later game bosses but don't quote me on that. It is better if enemy is very resistant or immune to fire though so there is that I guess.

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                                                            • Anonymous

The weapon art is the only thing holding it back compared to the other two. Still a really solid weapon and can be gotten real early with cheesing the boss. looks great as well

                                                                                                              • Anonymous

Way wayy shorter L2 range than Blasphemous, lower faith scaling, hit only 1 enemy (No collateral damage)

                                                                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                                                                  • Anonymous

Tested with Golden Vow and Shared Order.

                                                                                                                    • Anonymous

Love this sword. Randomly decided to respec for high Str/Faith for self buffs and quality of life using Clawmark Seal (scales str/faith) as well as Sacred Scorpion Charm which buffs holy damage a good amount (about 50 more holy dmg at +9, for comparison radagons soreseal only gets me about 20 more dmg). Its L2 nets me crits on bosses in 2-3 hits. Can't recommended it enough if you wanna try something diff that isn't just straight strength.

Boss can easily be cheesed with ranged. I used Watchdog's Staff (colossus weapon) with jellyfish summon to tank and spammed its L2 when safe. If you're tryna learn the fight, when hes wielding axe his attacks are easier to punish. When he's got sword, learn the stance he makes before he does that 5 hit combo and roll towards him under his legs when he starts to go ham. The 5th attack has a decent tracking so make sure you roll that one just incase. Good luck!

                                                                                                                        • Anonymous

I would hit him with 2 spells, run inside the building and hide behind the 2nd set of pillars.
After that I would crouch behind the pillar so as not to get hit by any of his attacks at the door.
Once he fully de-aggros, I repeated the process - his HP remained damaged.
Put all your flasks into mana as you should be getting hit.
A long and tedious process, but it works. I just watch a show or something between aggro resets.

It only started to out-damage my +15 Bastard Sword at +15 by 8 Physical dmg. Therefore, I don't think it's worth the stones investment If you have been using Lordsworn's Greatsword/Bastard Sword and don't plan on using this greatsword long term, unless you're willing to grind for the stones.

It's definitely interesting looking. I also like that it scales with strength and faith. Could be nice for a paladin build, but a greatsword is preferred instead of a mace or greathammer. Even if the faith scaling isn't great I would still use it for roleplay reason.
