Gatekeeper Gostoc is an NPC in Elden Ring. Gatekeeper Gostoc is an old tall fellow that may seem a bit suspicious, but he seems to want to help. It is your choice to trust him or not.
If you die within Stormveil Castle, he will steal 30% of any runes dropped when dying. However, the area outside of the castle where the Warhawks are at is safe from rune-theft if you die there.
Gatekeeper Gostoc Location in Elden Ring
- Gatekeeper Gostoc can be found by the entrance of Stormveil Castle, in the room next to the main gate into the castle. [Map Link]
- After defeating Godrick, Gostoc moves to the Godrick the Grafted Site of Grace, stomping on his remains.
- If defeated, drops:
Gatekeeper Gostoc Questline: How to complete Gatekeeper Gostoc's Quest
Castle Siege
- Gatekeeper Gostoc advises you to avoid entering the castle using the main gate because he says it's tightly guarded. He suggests you to try the opening through the other way, claiming that guards don't know about that entrance. You will be given the choice to accept or reject his suggestion.
- If you accept the offer, he will wish you luck and send you on your way to the side path.
- If you reject the offer, he will seemingly respect your decision and open the gate for you.
- Once you have obtained the Rusty Key or defeated Godrick, or catch him at one the 3 locations stalking you, he will start to provide merchant services.
- Gostoc at first may seem to want to help the player, although in a suspicious manner. This is however just a facade. He will actually steal 30% of your runes every time you die in the castle, even if you enter it through the main gate.
- After passing through specific trigger points, Gostoc will appear in certain locations behind the player. He will give you a Grace Mimic the first time you speak to him at one of these locations. He will not appear at them if you already opened the main gate of the castle. Otherwise, Gostoc can be found at these locations:
- Ruined Watchtower, behind the Stormveil Cliffside site of grace and must walk up the side path and into the room with 2 servants sitting on the ground for him to appear here.
- He appears on the cliff overlooking the Stormveil Cliffside site of grace.
- Inside the rampart tower.
- After you exit out to the ramparts with the stormhawks carrying explosive barrels, go to the balcony area along the ramparts and drop down to the ledge. Keep dropping down till you find a teardrop scarab and fight a crucible knight guarding a lift. When you take the lift back up, Gostoc will be near the lift examining a corpse.
- Alternatively, going out to the ramparts with the stormhawks and crossing the first ledge may cause him to spawn at the corpse near the lift.
- On the castle chapel roof, above Sorcerer Rogier.
- Go to the wooden balcony above the grafted scion and double back outside to the long path with the banished knight and torchpole soldier, Gostoc will be on the roof overlooking the path. He will not appear here if you have already spoken to him at any of the previous locations.
- Ruined Watchtower, behind the Stormveil Cliffside site of grace and must walk up the side path and into the room with 2 servants sitting on the ground for him to appear here.
- When you enter a dark room containing the Rusty Key, the door will close behind you and you can hear Gostoc's laugh. This will leave you alone with a dangerous Banished Knight.
- If you kill Gostoc beforehand, you won't be locked into the room containing the Rusty Key.
- After defeating Godrick, Gostoc will move to the boss room and begin stomping on the corpse, cursing Godrick for treating him badly. As of 1.04 he continues to be a merchant.
- Killing Gostoc will not lock you out of Nepheli Loux and Kenneth Haight's quest as it can still be completed without him, but you will miss out on the Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone and won't be able to buy it from the Twin Maiden Husks even if you gave them his bell bearing.
New Lord
- Once Nepheli Loux has been given The Stormhawk King, Kenneth Haight has regained control of his fort and Morgott has been defeated then Gostoc and the other two NPCs will move the Godrick's Throne Room. At this point Gostoc re-opens his shop and has a new item: an Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone
Elden Ring Gatekeeper Gostoc Shop
Gatekeeper Gostoc will open his store after you obtained the Rusty Key from Stormveil Castle.

Dialogue in Elden Ring: Gatekeeper Gostoc
Introduction
- "You're Tarnished, aren't you?
I would advise against taking the main gate into the castle.
It's tightly guarded by hardened old hands.
Try the opening right here.
The guards don't know about it.
You'll breach the castle undetected."
Answering with "Very Well"
- "Yes, that's the spirit...You're just the kind of Tarnished that I like. I pray for your success."
Visit
- I've come into some fine goods. Only, it turns out I can't use a one of them. Perhaps you'd like to take them off my hands?
When discovered by the player on the cliff overlooking the Stormveil Cliffside site of grace
- Oh, oh, you...
Oh, great, I'm glad you're here. Just a small reward, I was saving it for you. Please, its all yours. - *Presents 1x Grace Mimic to the player*
When spoken to again at this point
- Good, now let's be on our way, shall we? Wouldn't want the guards to spot you.
When spoken to once again at this point.
- Hop along, will you? What'll happen if the guards catch you strutting about?.
If the player dies to the trap, Gostoc will not appear in this spot after reviving. Instead, his encounter dialogue from this event will take place in another location.
ยงThe Death of Godrick
-
What a pathetic excuse for a Lord you were. Craven to the bone. Pushing me about like that. And after all that grafting? Where did that get you? Look down on me, would you? Godrick? You filthy slug. Feel it! Feel it! Feel my bloody wrath!
Oh...hello there. This weasel was...Godrick was always looking down on me. He got what he bloody deserved, thanks to you. I tell you though, what goes around comes around. He had an ugly heart, an uglier countenance, and me the ugliest of ends, eh. He he he he he...Now, I supposed I'm free. I can do whatever takes my fancy...Can't I, mate?
Small Talk
- "Use that opening to breach the castle. The guards haven't a clue about it. You'll slip right inside undetected."
When attacked
- "Blast, what's it to you! Step back, you wretched Tarnished!"
- (On player kill) "Oh, don't worry, I've got big plans for what's left of you..."
When Killed
- "Damn it all. Why is it always me? What did I do to deserve..."
When Killed after Godrick is dead
- "But I'm free..."
"I can do what I like"
When Gostoc kills the player after Godrick is dead
- "Ha, do you feel it..."
"Do you feel my bloody wrath?"
Stormveil Castle Throne Room, after Nepheli Loux and Kenneth Haight have moved there
- "Ah, you, is it? Haven't seen your mug in quite some time.
As you can see, I'm the new Lady's attendant.
Freedom? Wasn't worth squat. B-besides, I like it 'round 'ere...
Lady Nepheli's still fair of heart and countenance..." - "Still, I have the Lady's trust.
...So I can loot all the corpses I like.
I'll let you take a look at the goods, if you fancy."
[Reopens shop] - "Ah, back again, are we? Curious one, you are.
Well then, what are you after?"
Elden Ring Notes & Trivia for Gatekeeper Gostoc
- Gostoc being found hiding at difficult to access locations around the castle suggests he is stalking you to collect your runes after you die. He also presumably collects his goods from corpses in the fortress.
- Cut dialogue suggested that he is the son of Godrick, and that there was an option to crown him as Ruler of Stormveil, instead of Nepheli. Should he received the crown in his cut questline, he would follow Godrick's footsteps and begin grafting himself.
- Killing the Banished Knight in the dark room before being locked in by Gostoc will result in him not closing the door behind you once you do enter, although you will still hear him laughing behind you.
- Gatekeeper Gostoc is missing his left hand. Removal of one or both hands was a historical punishment for stealing. His arm may have also been taken for Grafting.
- The graveyard after the fight with Godrick counts as castle grounds and he will steal your runes here as well.

So, for the first time, I accidentally killed this bastard. I was on the rooftops and saw what I thought was one of the servants and just ran and attacked him. Dude didn't even finish what he was saying before he fell to his death. I was confused because of how much his life pool was before I realized it was this bastard. Had to check if he was important for anything and was glad that it was just an Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone. A bummer I lost one of 13 per playthrough, but to be honest... I never liked the guy anyway. One less ADSS is worth watching this wretch die via falling LOL I would've been super pissed and likely rolled a new character if he had actual quest impact and/or had a unique item tied to him since I'm going for a 100% playthrough.

I really like godrick and thought the grafted thinggy of his is cool, he was big and mighty, after defeat him, I found this mf stomping on his corpse, he was small and lonely, almost pathetic... And then I snapped

You can stop him from stealing your rune after he open a shop.
Simply after being locked in the room with the Banished knight, defeat the knight and talk to him at Stormveil Main Gate where you first meet him.
He will open the shop and stop stealing your rune.

The only reason why I donโt kill this bastard is because of the smithing stone
I thought he wore a commoner set but there's some differences. I wonder what his set is?

Something worth testing, I kind of experienced this as of today. Defeated Margit but at the same time died. Upon regaining runes, all I got was 9600+ runes. Before dying to Margit, I should have approximately 500-700 runes. Margit should've dropped 12K runes and in turn should've provided me that amoun. I'm guessing Gostoc's 30% tax already takes effect after defeating Margit.
- Anonymous
i don't really feel bad for reasonlessly killing him now lol
- Anonymous
Wait he doesn't appear at any of the locations if you got him to open the main gate?
- Anonymous
was sitting on 306 million leftover runes after making a max level character (713).
fell off the side of the castle while doing some parkour exploring and died by mistake, and this guy straight up stole 50% of the runes so when i went back to pick up my rune spot, it only had about 149 million runes left in it
thought he was only supposed to steal 30%
- Anonymous
he doesn't steal your runes if you enter through the main gate for some reason
either that or his rune stealing capabilities only extend to the side enterance main enterance areas, and not in the castle proper
- Anonymous
I didn't even know he stole my runes up until just now, even though I've been through stormveil several times. Damn, gostoc, you're so cruel
- Anonymous
gatekeeper gostoc.. i will seek you in every playthrough, to deliver you what is yours.. destined death
- Anonymous
Damn, people get this triggered for some runes? Morgott was on to something here.
I see him stealing runes per death as an incentive of not trying over and over again if stormveil turns out to be too hard for the level you're at. Just beat the area when you prepare your character enough.
In fact, i think it's a bad decision to give the player the option to remove this by killing gostoc early and missing a REALLY valuable item that's worth all the runes lost for it. I would have linked the rune loss to godwyn's corpse and the trigger to stop the rune steal would be aquiring godrick's great rune.
- Anonymous
After you kill godrick does dying in the castle still cause him to steal your runes?
- Anonymous
I opened the gate and still found him the Ruined Watchtower and the rampart tower

**** this guy man, ancient dragon smithing stone can be found elsewhere, this piece of **** deserves what he gets

Steals 13,000 runes from me.
"What did I do to deserve this?"

If you catch him stalking you, he stops stealing your runes. This way you can get the important upgrade material AND get him to stop screwing with your runes without killing him.

I just found fim at a location not listed here. I got the rustey key without dying and rested at the next site of grace and return for the claws. He is sitting in on pf the corners in the barrels area. I thought it was another mob and aggro him. I killed godrick and he did not appear on his corpse. I see if using celestial dew fix the questline.

Once I realised he was stealing my runes, I just slaughtered him. Didn't even realise he had an actual quest. Given what a bastard of an area Stormveil Castle is (and what a prick of a boss Godrick is), I don't think his quest is worth it. Just get him out of the way.
- Anonymous
''He will not appear at them if you already opened the main gate of the castle. Otherwise, Gostoc can be found at these locations''
This information isn't correct. I just encountered him on the roof above sorcerer Rogier and I started Stormveil Castle though the maingate. I'm on NG+ by the way but I doubt that changes anything.
- Anonymous
Worst NPC. First they make him steal your runes. Then AFTER four patches they make him continue to be a merchant and attach an Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone to him that won't apply to his bell bearing when killed. That's whack. Many of us killed him well prior to 1.04 and now we're out one of the easiest +25's in the game.
- Anonymous
I somehow managed to stop him stealing my runes. Not sure what made him this way but here's what I did:
- chose to enter through the hole option dialog
- did the dark room normally (Gostoc shut the door)
- well then I got to the Bastile SoG
- went back to Gostoc and talked to him (he talked about that he gathered some things and wish I make him free of them)
- I belive I didn't buy anything from him
- after that I died cuz Im bad, and when I picked those runes up I haven't lost a singe one
(I tested this and died on purpose near Bastile SoG and I'm not losing runes anymore)
I guess talking to Gostoc after you survive the dark room trick and talking to him (deathless in my case) makes him stop stealing runes from you
- Anonymous
Honestly just a broken guy. Still an *******, so kill him once you get the smithing stone.

You can meet Gostoc at the wall-site-of-grace location (roughly). Not sure what trigered that, because that's the first after approx. 15 runs through stormveil castle. You find him after going up with the elevator from the crucible-knight location. Additional dialogue is some perimeter-trigger-area-talk first, about how the corpse doesn't have to much of value, but when you talk to him he shouts at you not to scare him and how he has to keep the grounds clean/clear and how you shouldn't mind him.
No trade possible here, vanishes back to his standard place after reloading at the bonfire.
(died once to the Banished Knight after Gostoc locked me in the room, tried to re-open and it was blocked)
Confirmed that if you kill him, you get your runes back. Not sure if dying again before killing him loses them or not, but I just killed the pasty sonuva***** and he dropped 200k. Good riddance, freak >=(

Locked me and stole my souls?! Fine, I'll take your life then lmao
- Anonymous
Lol just entered the castle with 4m runes, died once, and now I have 3m
Just saying

- Anonymous
Not sure what the trigger is, but after progressing to a certain point in the castle he no longer seems to steal runes upon death, even with Godrick still alive. Tested on multiple characters in different playthroughs. While I dont know what the exact trigger is, I do know that if I make my way back to the main entrance from the rooftops (going from behind the ballistas) and lighting the grace by the main gate lever, he will no longer steal runes. Possible THIS is the trigger but I cannot confirm
- Anonymous
Kill this guy, the ONLY thing he has that is worth your time is the Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone.
- Anonymous
His picture is stuck at maingate but heโs not there after completing nepheli and haight. Anyone know how to fix?
- Anonymous
30% on a new character may not seem alot. But jesus christ with a smurf character carrying over 3mill runes, I may have to butcher that albino looking mongoloid.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Died a few times in Stormveil in NG+, and 30% of the runes you're walking around with in NG+ is a LOT to lose. I decided to kill Gostoc because **** this guy for stealing so many, and although I didn't get the exact math, he dropped nearly 100,000 runes. So I think that if you kill him, you get back any runes that he steals. Either that or he just naturally drops a lot of runes. Either way, fat coinpurse therefore attacking required ahead.
- Anonymous
this page might have inaccurate info. i got the rusty key and he would not sell to me. i had to actually USE the key on the nearby door for him to stop repeating gate dialogue
- Anonymous
What race is Gostoc and other characters like him? Most humanoids in the game are actually human. But the servants are this weird, stretched out, scraggly race. Any lore or guesses?
- Anonymous

This is the real patches he's like ancient now and the guy going by patches just stole his identity.

So how is this guy supposedly "stealing your runes"? Does that even make sense? (Even allowing for the muddy lore and mechanics.) You die and reanimate immediately at a grace point. So this guy seems to have the ability to steal from you during that period of time?!? Seems like he would be a pretty powerful dude. After all, he could presumably take everything you own.
- Anonymous
I actually completed Nepheli's quest with gostoc dead and got a +25 from Kenneth
- Anonymous
I thought it was Gostoc that turned into Margit, The Fell Omen (Lyndell). I see a shackled-up guy that looks like Gostoc, some light, then field boss Margit???
- Anonymous
The theory of Gostoc being a bastard child of Godrick makes heaps sense. Like, for crying out loud, he has 1/3 of Godricks HP Bar
- Anonymous
I don't see anything mentioning when you see him "cleaning up bodies" at the top of the cliffside elevator
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Ohโฆso HEโS the bastard who locked me in that room.
Iโm gonna need those 30,000 runes back, buddy.
- Anonymous
This might make me sound dumb but I really thought this guy was Patches in disguise at first. I didn't realize he had hair so I thought he was bald, and some of the stuff he does like stealing your runes and locking you in that room is similar to Patches.
- Anonymous
I just went up to him and backstabbed him when he was sitting on the roof. I thought he was an enemy. Whoops.
- Anonymous
Devs at fromsoft said "what if we made another patches, but this one's just a piece of sh*t" and then they made gostoc
Kill him first thing every time, Zero reason I need the ADSS when I'll already have 5 at that point and I don't have to worry about losing souls every single time I die. Not like he's a good merchant either since he sells garbage.
- Anonymous
He becomes a merchant if you just open the door, you don't have to pick up the rusty key
- Anonymous
DO NOT KILL HIM, he'll sell you a dragon stone (very rare) later in the game, honestly those 25% lost rune in the castle means nothing in the long run.
- Anonymous
i made a new character, and did everything i could think of in limgrave, went to stomveil castle without spending any souls. i never lost my bloodstain the whole way through the castle but after 2 recollects i notice i lost 15k souls, hours of work for a level 20. its one thing if i had lost that bloodstain myself, but this is just complete horseshit. **** you fromsoft.

He looks like the ghost in Nokron before the area with ancestors. Kneeling and calling for Mohg to take him

I killed him as he was stomping out godrick and just finished the quest for nepheli and Kenneth. Still recieved the stone so murder that d**khead no penalty
- Anonymous
I accidently hit him a few times where he was sitting on a roof in stormveil castle (i didn't realize it was him) so he attacks me whenever he sees me, can i still continue his questline or do i need to talk to Miriel now when i'll be there?

i killed him before defeating Godrick. but now i can't finish nepelis and kenneth story. neither of them spawn in the throne room. ive completed all the steps for them.

it would seem that he no longer opens his shop after getting the rusty key. how obnoxious.

the only difference between this guy and patches is we all love patches, but no one loves this guy.

killing Gostoc wont change whether or not you receive the ancient dragon smiting stone from Nepheli Loux, correct me if I have misread this but to me it reads saying Gostoc is required to receive the stone from Nepheli Loux. all the more i think it should be re worded.
- Anonymous
There's a video by Zullie the Witch indicating that there's a hidden dialogue. Apparently Gostoc claims to be Godrick's son and asks that you give him his crown. So I guess it was once a possibility to pick up the crown and give it to either Gostoc or Nepheli and thus deciding who becomes lord of Stormveil.
- Anonymous
This man is basically Patches with more sniveling and spite, and none of the charm or sense of adventure.
- Anonymous
Why even make it so he steals your Runes at all.
That just seems dumb.
- Anonymous
He will still stalk you through the castle, even if you opened the main gate, so long as you load in at a site of grave outside the castle and follow the side path.
- Anonymous
Important to note that using the Twiggy Cracked Tear to stop rune loss on death will keep Gostoc from stealing your runes. This makes Stormveil Castle a lot less frustrating on NG+ if you're trying to keep Gostoc alive but don't want him to leech massive amounts of runes off you. Admittedly the downside is that you only have until the Tear runs out in 3 minutes to explore, but Grace checkpoints are pretty common, and if you know where you're going it isn't too bad. I was running a parry build, which I find to be a slower build, and I didn't have too much trouble with the time restraint. And anyway, being conscious of the time is preferable to losing hundreds of thousands of runes to Gostoc's tax. This is as of 1.04.

This dude is such a *****, he steals your runes but u NEED to keep him alive to get that damn +25 stone, and becuase he is a no fight zone at the end, you can't even get the stone then kill him after. Little prick.

Gostoc will appear on the chapel that Sorcerer Rogier is within even if you open the main gate. Confirmed today.

He shows up next to the stromveil castle lift looting a corpse. His dialogue indicates that he has been taking limbs or other body parts from the stronger ones, possibly to graft unto himself.

Does he still steal your runes after you kill Godrick? Like when you're past Stormveil into Liurnia
- Anonymous
I met Gostoc in the rampart tower after the following path:
Starting from rampart tower site of grace, past through 3 hawks and head to the tower to the left.
From the tower, carefully jump down the cliffs until you see the scarab carrying the ash of war.
You should also see a forge knight on your way back.
Defeat him and take the elevator back into the rampart tower.
You will hear Gostoc mumbling nearby after you get back to the start point.
- Anonymous
Not sure what triggers it, but he has some more dialogue that isn't listed here when you ride up the elevator from the Crucible Knight. He'll be scavenging a corpse when you reach the top.
- Anonymous
"He will actually steal 30% of your runes every time you die in the castle, even if you enter it through the main gate." - on NG+ I entered through the main gate and he is not stealing runes from me this time. I don't know if it has to do with NG+ or me having killed him in my first run, but I suspect it's more likely that he only starts stealing runes after locking you in the banished knight room or once you obtain the rusty key.
- Anonymous
Gostoc continues to steal your Runes on the east side of Liurnia at least as far as the Artist's Shack.
I noticed that a chunk of my dropped runes was missing after i recovered them at the Artist's Shack.
I went back to Godrick's boss room and killed Gostoc, then let the knight kill me at the Artist's shack again to see if i was still missing runes after recovering them.
It stopped.
Gostoc continues stealing your Runes in the East side of Liurnia.

people keep talking about how Elden Ring has a lot of gatekeepers, but something must be wrong as this is the only gatekeeper listed on the wiki?
