God-Devouring Serpent is a Boss in Elden Ring. This Elden Ring God-Devouring Serpent Guide features boss locations, tips, strategies and videos on how to defeat the God-Devouring Serpent easily, as well as boss stats and lore for the God-Devouring Serpent.

The God-Devouring Serpent is a massive coiled serpent found at the Volcano Manor in Mt. Gelmir. It was worshipped long ago by the ancient people of Mt. Gelmir, who offered up sacrifices to the powerful serpent god using a specific curved sword. The Serpent-Hunter was once used to hunt down the immoral god and it's true power manifests when faced against it.

This is an optional boss, as players don't need to defeat it in order to advance in Elden Ring.  God-Devouring Serpent is the First Phase of Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy. Unlike most boss phases, the God-Devouring Serpent has its own health bar which must be depleted before you can challenge the Second Phase. Note that dying to his Second Phase as Rykard will require you to defeat the serpent once again. Right as you enter the arena to the God-Devouring Serpent, you'll immediately be able to find and equip the Serpent-Hunter - a Great Spear with special properties in this boss fight. Rykard, and the God-Devouring Serpent by extension, drops Rykard's Great Rune and the Remembrance of the Blasphemous when defeated.

Bosses are unique and challenging Enemies that can be encountered all over the Lands Between. They can drop unique Spirit AshesWeaponsSpells, and other various Items.

The great serpent of Mt. Gelmir that swallowed Praetor Rykard. Attacks with poisonous spit, bites, and slams.

Absorptions:

The absorption numbers are the % of your damage that gets blocked. For example if an absorption is 60. 40% of that damage by that type will go through and 60% is absorbed. Bigger number= less damage. An absorption of 100 means no damage goes through, and a resistance of -100 mean the enemy takes 2x damage from that source. 0 means damage goes pretty much as is.

Resistances:

The resistance numbers is the buildup amount to trigger it. For example if a resistance is 100 you must deal 100 points of whatever aux buildup to trigger it. Note that these go down over time, and increase each time the effect procs.

God-Devouring Serpent Fight Strategy

The Best Tips for God-Devouring Serpent:

  • Use the Serpent-Hunter Great Spear found at the beginning of the boss' chamber.
    • Check your equipment load (to avoid fat-rolling) after equipping the spear; it's heavy!
  • Use the Mimic Tear Spirit Summon while equipped with the Serpent-Hunter to significantly reduce the boss' difficulty.

General Strategy

Be sure to pick up the Serpent-Hunter Great Spear held by a corpse at the beginning of the boss' chamber. It has a special interaction with this boss fight in which it manifests a blade of light with every attack, significantly increasing its range and allowing players to damage both phases of the boss from outside of the magma pool he stands in.

The Serpent's attacks primarily consist of lunging strikes and bites. It can also perform a special grab animation with its jaws in which it slams you down twice. However, this move only deals damage once. The Serpent will sometimes raises its head up high and then slam its chin on the ground, sending magma flying outward in a very wide arc. This attack can be dodged through or blocked to reduce damage.

If you opted to use the Serpent-Hunter, you should constantly be poking him between his attacks. Enough hits on the head will cause the Serpent to go down briefly, allowing you a much needed window of uninterrupted attacks.

Once the Serpent is defeated, Phase Two begins with Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy. See Rykard's page for relevant information.

Cheese Strategy

The God-Devouring Serpent and by extension, Rykard can be made significantly more easy by summoning the Mimic Tear Spirit while equipped with the Serpent-Hunter. The Mimic copies your current equipment and this extends to the blade of light functionality of the Serpent-Hunter. The Mimic will attack of its own volition and you will still need to dodge the boss' attacks properly but having what is essentially a second player firing blades of light at him will massively cut down the amount of time and effort required to defeat the boss.

Melee Users

Strategy Writeup for Melee Users

If player wants to beat the boss without Serpent-Hunter as a melee, he should focus on inflicting Status-Effects (Frostbite and Blood loss).

Magic and Ranged Users

Strategy Writeup for Magic Users

If the player wants to beat God-Devouring Serpent without Serpent-Hunter, the optimal spells would be Borealis's Mist & Ekzykes's Decay (Incantation) or Rock Sling (Sorcery). Beginning of fight gives a good opportunity to apply Status Effect.

God-Devouring Serpent Attacks & Counters

Attack Description Counter
Snake Bite The Serpent lunges from one side towards you. It will sometimes follow up with a second lunge from the opposite direction. Dodge towards the direction the lunge is coming from.
Grab Attack The Serpent raises its head up high and lunges forward. If the attack connects, the snake will grab the player, slamming them twice but dealing damage only once. Requires precise timing to prevent the grab.
Poison Spit The Serpent spits several globs of poison that spread out in various directions, leaving a pool of poison on the ground momentarily. Stay within medium range to prevent it from using this move. Do not stand in poison puddles.
Magma Slam The Serpent raises its head up high, tilting it to the back. It then slams its chin on the ground, sending magma flying outwards in a very wide arc in front of it. Dodge through the magma or block it to reduce damage.
Magma Upheaval The Serpent raises and coils its head on its left and then plunges its face into the ground. After a short delay, it pulls its head from the ground, causing a wide magma eruption that travels forward in front of it. This move is very difficult to dodge but can be blocked with a shield to significantly reduce damage.
Magma Thrash The Serpent raises its head up high, looking to the side with its jaws wide open. It then begins thrashing about the magma as it spins around 360 degrees, sweeping with its head and tail, sending magma splashing about in random directions. Maintain your distance and avoid any flying magma.

Save FP for Phase 2. When he tries to summon all the skulls from the sky, use the weapon art followed by a charged attack and repeat. He will keep trying to summon the skulls, the weapon art will always stagger him and he will keep trying to summon them over and over.

If you run to the right, you can force him to keep turning slowly and using the bite combo, grab and poison spit. All of which are easily delt with.

Combo, you can see the first strike coming from the left a mile away, block or roll and then run slightly away and to the right. He will miss you.

The grab, you just roll, free WA attack window.

Poison spit, run to the right, roll out of the last projectile and your golden.

Rotation also stops him from being able to close you into the wall with magma aoe at his...feets..

Phase 1 is easy as hell. Save your mana for phase 2.

Did they buff this guy? when I first fought him over a year ago, I was ably to constantly stagger him. Now I stagger him at the start and then not at all.

Fun fact, there's a cut boss from bloodborne that was a big pile of snakes. Yes, there are balls of snakes but they are basically reused from the boss idea. While the fight between this giant ball of snake and the cut ball of snake fight are different, their designs are strikingly similar.

            • Anonymous

Does the serpent's poison spit cause deadly poison? Considering all of the DP weapons that relate to it, I would assume so

              • Anonymous

Eternal Darkness works well against Rykard's magma spam, Thop's Barrier should work too but I haven't tested it

easy is an understatement when you use the mimic. i got my mimic up to +10 really early after i got it cause i went everywhere i could and when i summoned it with a +5 serpent spear and a +18 cold nagakiba the battle lasted maybe 15 minutes at most. he got me a few times with the swipe across the floor but he went down really easily.

If you're a caster with low health points this boss fight is a true nightmare.
Yhorm 2.0 with Laurence level difficulty... it could be fun but it just feels unfair.

Pretty much the only boss foght in which shields are mandatory.

Don't waste your time in trying to dodge tgis dosaster of a boss fight, he's so bad designed that nearly every one of his moves is impossible to actually dodge.

But with a fire resistant heavy shield and stamina regeneration, the fight becomes a cakewalk.

Both the earthquake of phase 1 and the big sword slam after the rain of explosive skulls deals little to no damage at all by blocking them.

Whoever has designed this boss had in mind a shield/spear play style, clearly forgetting that you can't force play styles in a rpg game.

Question about the boss name for peoples who understand japanese, in VO does this boss name mean actually "God devouring serpent" or "Gods devouring serpent", cause in french for example, "serpent dévoreurs de dieux" means plural gods, and it would make sense because there is a lot of gods in elden ring world.

I had better luck when I started this fight from a different angle than just coming straight on. I assume plenty of other angles would work, but I circled out to the right and came around to about 3-4 o'clock (assuming you come in the door at 6 o'clock). When you get in range, he seems to expect you to be in front of him, so you can get off an extra hit before he turns to face you. I was regularly able to get off 3-4 casts of rock sling to ensure the fight began with a stagger. Make sure you start casting as soon as he becomes targetable. In addition, it seemed to me that the magma slam came out far less than it did when I was starting the fight straight on. I also didn't get backed into the wall, although you do have to watch that you work around the pillars, but you can also use them to your advantage.

On NG, I beat him with my melee character by wearing all the best fire resist gear I had (armor and talisman), running up to him and hacking away with my mimic until he died. As others have said, he can't hit you when you're up close, and the fire resistance should prevent stagger. On NG+ running a mage build without summons, he was much harder. I wanted to try to do it without relying on serpent hunter, but my spells barely made a dent in his health, so I eventually had to give in. Use rock sling to stagger him, blast him with serpent hunter, and learn to dodge. When all the skulls come out, run your ass off. I really wish there were spells that did better damage against him so not everyone needed to use serpent hunter. Otherwise, this is a pretty epic boss fight.

Apparently this loser can destroy your runes if you try and pick them up and get hit with the undodgeable lava move. I forgot to grab them when I went through the door so ran back to get them and right as I picked them up got tossed in the air. Runes just vanished into thin air.

Hate that stupid earthquake move, its fkn impossible to dodge. I can do the whole game no hit but that one move is just impossible and complete rng. so many hour long no hit runs thrown away because of that one move. hate it

I've been enjoying the entire game up until this garbage fight. I mean the whole game is about freedom of choice, pick your playstyle, pick your clothes, pick your quest paths - then theres this ****er - okay yes, the serpent hunter makes this fight easy or i'm guessing it would if you're a melee build. However comma I'm sorcery/dex, I use summons to draw aggro while i glass cannon my way through fights and although i struggle a lot still cause i'm not the best at these games, this fight was absolute hell between the rng, the constant stagger on my low poise(even with scaled armor!!), and suddenly changing how i've played the game this entire 110 hours just to beat this one dude cause i didn't want to leave any boss unbeaten. I get that it's an optional boss, he looks cool-ish, and it's an interesting idea for a boss - but even though i did it I can't stand the gimmick aspect of this fight. Just glad I'm done so i can go back to doing anything in elden ring but that ****ing fight.

Had they simply removed the lava and scaled down his health so that the serpent hunter would have been optional rather than mandatory the fight might have been one of my favorites. Instead they force a cheap gimmick into the fight and throw all builds down the drain.

                                    • Anonymous

He's also got an attack where he just rushes you and bites like 6 times in succession. Just run away from it, seems like he only does it when you are a little far away from him.

                                      • Anonymous

You can upgrade Serpent Hunter, this makes the fight a complete joke. Just upgrade to +8 (or less) to not waste precious material and it's ez gg.

So after the 1.04 patch, this **** can't be stunned like before AND it also spams Magma Upheaval which can be dodged ? LOL.

                                            • Anonymous

This fight is very easy if you are willing to adopt your strategy and playstyle. No mimic tear needed.
Equip a greatshield and the serpent spear. Equip any stamina boosting amulets you have, the one that increases stamina recovery is especially good.
It does not matter if you are fatrolling.
Spears *can R1 attack while you are shielding.* Shield the entire time and just keep poking. After the serpent has finished attacking, let go of guard and let your stamina fill back up, then guard and continue poking.
You know that AOE attack that is incredibly hard to dodge? You can easily shield through it and it doesn't even do much stamina damage.

The only thing you need to watch out for is the snake's grab attack. You need to dodge. Harder when fatrolling but with a couple tries you can do it consistently.

These same tactics work for rykard as well.

Obviously the more stamina you have the better this works.

To dodge the "Magma Upheaval" just run to the side, you get enough time to avoid the damage that way but you have to run until the attack goes off.

                                                • Anonymous

For anyone wanting to dodge the "Magma Upheaval" what you need to do is to run to the side the moment the boss starts the attack, dodging with a roll or a jump is not enough avoid damage but running is.

Keep in mind that the move is done more often if you are far away from the boss.

did they change the poise in the last patch? before i would be able to break his poise and basically stunlock him with the first hit of the serpent hunter weapon art, but now it doesnt do that anymore. it wasnt mentioned in the patch notes so i dunno

                                                    • Anonymous

With a summon taking aggro you can literally just stand 10 yds away to the side and spam the weapon art on the spear and he won't hit you once.. it's funny that people are dying to him lmaooo

                                                      • Anonymous

Weak to Serpent-Hunter and somehow to Frostbite. The "somehow" made me laugh. Most reptiles hate cold, not to mention that it's a volcano boss but making a lava creature cold would seem to make sense to me. but why does it say somehow?

Every stab at this seems drastically different. Sometimes I get to Rykard and other times I don't get a single hit on the damn snake.

I've been using Latenna the Albinauric ashes with varying success. I chose her since she won't run into the magma like the others, and has stayed alive most attempts but she can get demolished easily if the snake comes out too far.

                                                          • Anonymous

Just found a really easy way to deal with both bosses. Like most massive enemies, most of their attacks can't hit UNDER them. So if you run up RIGHT next to them, most of their attacks will miss. The only 2 attacks that will hit you is their jump up / slam down attack and their spin/trash attack. Both are obvious and have long wind up times for you to dodge. Yes, you DO take fire damage from the lava, but it is MUCH less than dealing with all the attacks. I beat both bosses first try as a mage spamming Adula's Moonblade after I realize I don't take much damage from the lava under them.

                                                            • Anonymous

is this boss harder if you skip the manor quest to get to him via tp from the lady? i went through the portal and he seems more agro and harder if you fight him via the teleport or am i wrong?

                                                              • Attempting low level strategies (lvl 35). Blocking the serpent's ground attack is the only way to go- It does not do much damage versus 100%. If you have insane timing, the L2 full charge will interrupt this as well, but it's nearly impossible to telegraph in time. Frustrating as I currently have to fat roll with both shield and spear. Guess I need to come back with the mimic tear...

Dear goodness, I upgraded the sword to +9 and my tear +6. Was pulling close to 10k damage with the power attack. Definitely the way to go if you wanna cheese this b.

                                                                  • Anonymous

this boss, at least to me, feels like it was designed by a ten year old. why would i want a useless spear that's garbage outside of this fight to clutter up my inventory?? "le epic weapon that kills this boss hard n good" is NOT a good boss design, and people made that PAINFULLY clear with yhorm. This fight feels like yhorm, but if you give him even a SECOND to breathe, he lets loose a thousand homing projectiles that obscure 90% of your view. It's just painful and it's the first bossfight so far i've genuinely just given up on and summoned people in for. Jesus christ, From.

                                                                    • Anonymous

I genuinely think the first phase is poorly designed in some cases. he is not the hardest boss, but the earthquake attack is nearly undodgable, and insta kills lower vigor characters. like 30 and below. i may not be the best player, but it just feels unfair to take unavoidable damage/death sometimes right at the start if he chooses that move..

                                                                      • Anonymous

If you summon other players for the fight, start it as soon as possible. The small area before the boss (with the grace) is invadable and infested with Rivers of Blood spammers.

                                                                        • Anonymous

Just beat this guy with a mage with 16 str and an upgraded snake spear. Get yourself to medium/long distance. Now do the L2 attack. For me at least ,it interupted the boss every single time. Pause a fraction of a second between strikes to let your stamina recharge. I did this for both phases.
                                                                          What a stupid boss.

                                                                          • Anonymous

A great boss ruined by anti-fun lava staggerfest, even more anti-melee bosses... no surprise people go for magic with this boss design

                                                                            • Anonymous

                                                                              • Anonymous

Does anyone know what the chest piece is that you find as loot after beating the snake? There's a chest piece with a crest or something that is relevant to Ofnir, if I remember. What's that chest piece called?

                                                                                • Anonymous

Really cool concept in one of the few actually memorable arenas in the game, ruined by almost forcing you to use a boring gimmick weapon. I guess it's similar to bed of chaos in that it makes you change the way you normally look at bosses, but it drags on for way too long.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

This is definitely a rehashed model of the cut bloodborne boss that was meant for the forbidden forest, a giant snake ball instead of the shadow of yharnam.

                                                                                    • Anonymous

The L2 attack of the spear kinda staggers the boss, you can spam it a bit until you run out of FP/ST.
cool concept, it's the yhorm of elden ring.

                                                                                      • Anonymous

He struggled to hit me while i was close and the lava that he has following him around doesn't hurt that much.

Took less than 2 minutes to complete :)
