Godfrey, First Elden Lord and Hoarah Loux, Warrior is a two-phase Legend Boss in Elden Ring. Godfrey was Queen Marika's first consort, and thus the first Elden Lord of the Lands Between. Before earning this title, he was known as Hoarah Loux, the chieftain of the badlands and a bloodthirsty warrior. Godfrey took the Beast Regent Serosh upon his back after committing to his role as a Lord in order to suppress his violent urges. After fighting countless wars, Marika deprived him and his warriors of their grace, marking them as the first Tarnished.

This is not an optional boss, as players must defeat it to advance in Elden Ring.

Godfrey, First Elden Lord (Golden Shade) is another variant of this boss.

Negations (or Absorptions)

The negation numbers are the % of your damage that gets blocked. For example, if a negation is 60, 40% of that damage by that type will go through and 60% will be negated. Bigger number = less damage. A negation of 100 means no damage goes through, and a negation of -100 mean the enemy takes 2x damage from that source. 0 means damage goes pretty much as is.

Resistances

The resistance numbers are the buildup amount to trigger it. For example, if a resistance is 100 you must deal 100 points of the given buildup to trigger it. Note that these go down over time, and increase each time the effect procs. The values after the "/"s indicate the increased resistances after each successive proc.

Godfrey, First Elden Lord Fight Strategy

The Best Tips for Godfrey, First Elden Lord:

  • Mainly deals Standard Damage, so prioritize defence towards that type of damage.
  • No matter the build, during phase 1 it is important to keep close. He will otherwise dash towards you and Stomp, covering the entire area in AoE.
  • In phase 2, recognize his grapple patterns.
  • Most stomp attacks which cause a shockwave attack are more easily jumped over, than rolled through
    • Alternatively, skills/spells that keeps player above ground can be used to avoid damage and inflict it at the same time.
  • His roar buffs and successful grab moves are slow, what player can use to cast Ancient Dragons' Lightning Strike at point-blank for massive damage.

General Strategy

As one of the easier late game bosses, Godfrey is not an overly complicated fight. He hits extremely hard, but is relatively slow and telegraphs his moves way ahead of time. Given you have enough stamina, you can block most of his axe swings in phase 1, although dodging them should be your priority.

Most of his stomp moves can be avoided simply by jumping as soon as you see him lower his leg.
The regular stomp travels in a cone in front of him, leaving him briefly vulnerable to attacks. Avoid being caught on the wider side of the cone.

Godfrey can empower his stomps. He will stand at a distance and raise his axe overhead, slowly lifting his legs. He will have a red aura while the effect lasts. Until it dissipates, the shockwaves from his stomp attacks will cover the entire arena.

Once Godfrey is brought down to about 50% HP, a cutscene will play where he sheds his armor, slays his regent Serosh, and unveils his true form as Hoarah Loux, Warrior.

As Hoarah Loux, Godfrey ditches his axe in favor of hand-to-hand grappling. The key to beating him is recognizing the patterns for his grapple moves and dodging them accordingly, as they might one-hit players with low Vigor and will go through a shield block.  The best openings to damage him are after he ends an attack chain, as well as after a leap attacks.
Thankfully, emerging as Hoarah Loux does not refill his health bar, so you only have to deal with the final half.

Melee Users

Strategy Writeup for Melee Users

Magic and Ranged Users

At the beginning of the fight, Godfrey will approach the player calmly, leaving you ample time to stage your opening move. Inflicting Frostbite is a good call, since his overall resistance are low, especially during 2nd part of the fight

Sorcery users can start the fight with Terra Magica, followed by Rennala's Full Moon. Comet Azur can be risky, as Godfrey might open with a jump attack if the player isn't in range. Speed is more important than damage here, especially in phase 2, so good choices would be Comet/Glintstone Cometshard or Glintstone Icecrag.

As for Incantations, you can start the first phase with Borealis's Mist. This will provoke the First Elden Lord to perform an attack, often a stomp, but you should be safe during casting the incantation. It might be worth trying the same in the second phase, although Hoarah Loux's attack patterns makes this risky.
During the second half of each phase, a fast spell like Lightning Spear is the best choice to chip away his health. Roar buffs can be used to approach him carefully, then cast charged Ancient Dragons' Lightning Strike for maximum damage.

Godfrey, First Elden Lord Attacks & Counters

Godfrey, First Elden Lord
Attack Description Counter
Axe Toss Leaps upwards, tossing his axe a short distance forward before quickly chasing after it. Run towards and under him to avoid the axe and subsequent slam, or dodge.
Plunging Axe Leaps upwards, then plunges the haft of his axe into the ground. Dodge as he lands on the ground.
Triple Axe Combo Swings to his right, then to his left, following up with a final slash to the left. Dodge towards the direction each attack is coming from.
Overhead Smash Performs a quick overhead smash with his axe, often followed by other moves, most commonly a 360° spin and a subsequent second overhead smash. Dodge to the side.
Fissure Briefly whirls his axe above his head before crashing it into the ground, pushing it down further after a brief delay. This creates a narrow fissure that spans the whole length of the arena. The released energy burst deals immense damage. Move out of the fissure immediately (to the side).
Stomp Raises one leg for a powerful stomp, sending a shockwave that causes a cone of rocks to burst from the ground in front of him. Often combos this with other moves. Jump as his foot lands or dodge the narrowest part of the cone at melee range.
Regal Roar Raises his axe overhead with both hands, lifting right leg, charging up with a red aura. Then stomps the ground, releasing a shockwave spanning almost the entire arena in all directions.
As long as his aura is active, all his stomps will have an arena-wide radius.
Jump as his foot lands. Avoid follow-up combos with additional jumps. Or, get in as much damage as you can, then dodge at the last minute.
Hoarah Loux
Attack Description Counter
Earth Shattering Stomp  Just as in phase 1, but additionally, he's smashing the ground with both hands, sending two shockwaves consecutively.  Jump as his leg hits the ground, then avoid follow-up combos with additional jumps.
Power Bomb Runs towards his target with his arms swinging high, attempting to grab them. If the attack connects, they are tossed into the air and Hoarah Loux leaps after them, slamming them back down for immense damage. He will sometimes perform a running leap to start off the move, which will be much faster than his regular running animation. Time your dodge well and dodge to the side.
Running Power Bomb Dashes towards his target with his arms crossed above his chest, performing a claw strike. If the attack connects, they are sent flying diagonally up and forward, after which Hoarah Loux leaps after them to slam them to the ground. Can be dodged just like Power Bomb, of which this is an alternate version with slightly higher damage.
Hoarah Loux's Earthshaker

A three-step move: First a roar that knocks targets down if it connects, directly followed by a leap. Upon impact, he slams his fist into the ground, creating a large shockwave. Finally, he plunges both arms into the ground, pulling them back out after a short delay. This causes energy to erupt from the ground in several places.
After Hoarah's Loux rage, 2nd part and 3rd part releases a shockwave.

Maintain distance during roar, time a dodge for the slam. As he is plunging his arms into the ground, clear the area of eruption. When in safe zone, a long-range attack can be performed with ease.
Note: Can be poise broken between 2nd and 3rd part of the attack, but this not cancel it.

Kick A powerful kick upwards that knocks players down. Can easily be sidestepped or dodged due to its narrow hitbox.
Choke Slam Winds up his right arm, then after a short delay attempts to grab his target. If the grab connects, he lifts them overhead with one hand and slams them back down. Dodge backwards or to the side to avoid the grab.
This attack is often used after he knocked the player down with his kick, while they are immune to be grabbed.
Claw Barrage Performs two quick swipes with his claws, followed by a delayed uppercut with his left. He will sometimes follow this up with a Choke Slam. Block; or dodge in the direction each attack comes from.
Leg sweep Low position leg sweep, performed mainly after other leg attacks Jump or back away
Hoarah Loux's Rage

After lowering health to about 20% of max HP, Hoarah enters a rage mode in which he at start shouts with his right leg up and then attacks the ground 2 times. Each attack unleashes a shockwave, that covers whole area (like Regal Roar).

Jump to avoid shockwave. Or, get in as much damage as you can, then dodge at the last moment.

Godfrey, First Elden Lord Lore, Notes & Other Trivia

  • At the beginning of the fight, Godfrey is seen cradling the corpse of his son Morgott, slowly dissipating into golden dust. His other sons are Mohg and Godwyn.
  • Serosh is seen biting into Godfrey’s shoulder during the fight. This is synonymous with him acting as a sort of limiter for his true nature.
  • Player will be teleported to the center of the arena for phase 2 only if they don't finish the first phase with a critical strike.
  • Lore suggests that the powerful warrior Hoarah Loux was chosen by Queen Marika as her consort, making him the First Elden Lord. Due to this, he took the Beast Regent Serosh upon his back, taming his bloodthirsty and wild nature, and taking on the name of Godfrey.
After winning many wars for the Erdtree, he was robbed of his grace, and was banished from the Lands Between, becoming the first Tarnished.
  • His Golden Shade variant has a two-headed axe, while Godfrey only has half of the axe head left.
  • Serosh has two model meshes, with the brighter one being used for cutscenes. The mesh's name referred to as “Marikesu,” likely related to Maliketh.
  • During 1st phase, Godfrey is immune to debuff caused by Blade of Death and Destined Death - skills saps his HP, but does not reduce his max HP. This is a very rare immunity in Elden Ring and it is unknown, whenever it is either a glitch or there is a lore explanation.
  • If Godfrey's stance is broken by the hit that triggers phase transition, nothing will happen and it will regenerate
  • Bug: If Tarnished is grabbed during an action like casting a spell, it's model may act in a weird way.
  • During first phase there is Hoarah Loux model under boss fight arena.
  • In 1.00, both 1st and 2nd phases has separate healthbars.
  • Hoarah Loux's Earthshaker attack lacks veins on the ground in 1.00 version of the game.

Unlike most, I find this fight bullcrap. Just don't work for me, my head cannot accept that what I think is an opening, is not an opening. Had to kill him with Nepheli, bc I got very angry after an hour (with Mohg and Maliketh nothing like this took place and I was dealing with them longer, so no, not about lack of trying). I just can't see the point in bosses that are this big and this fast when it comes to interrupt your healing. Not metioning the crazy combo in phase 2, that was manageable. Elden Ring end game bosses for now were either awesome or horrible for me

This fight is ****ing amazing, it gets a little junky with the area-wide AOE, but for everything else is probably one of the best fight in the game.
May the Greater Will bless Chadfrey, the first chad

        • Anonymous

I tried something stupid, and to my surprise, it worked: I spammed the Incantation Flame of the Fell God at him in both phases (while also jumping around a lot). So, if you have 41 Faith and are struggling with this guy, try Flame of the Fell God, which you can get from killing Adan in Liurnia.

          • Anonymous

A lot of FromSoft bosses gain a weapon or enhance the one they have for their second phase. Godfrey, however, throws his weapon away to beat you with his bare freaking hands.

            What a chad.

            • Anonymous

Honestly this boss phase 1 and phase 2 are night and day, phase 1 is predictable and chill then phase 2 he becomes a wwe wrestler with grabs and choke slams and arena wide stomping. I was not ready for that jolt, cool boss though

              • Anonymous

If you think this fight is especially hard, double-check your build. You should not be solely dependent on casting, and you should not get one-shot by his grabs, both of these mean your build is bad. If you are at the end-game with less than 40-50 VIG, go respec, you'll need the health for the next fight anyway. If you have NO melee weapon that can deal reliable damage and stagger, go find one. Almost any build can effectively use several very good weapons with great damage and stagger, such as the Hand Axe or Spiked Caestus. If you are heavy rolling, drop your shield or switch to lighter armor, rolling and jumping are much better than blocking here. In fact, you can jump over virtually every shockwave move he has and several of his 1st phase axe swings. If you are not stacking damage resistance vs every single boss you're fighting at this point, that's on you. Every attack Godfrey/Hoarah has is physical damage, so equip the Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman and use items like Boiled Prawn/Crab or spells like Black Flame's Protection. Do all this and you will stop getting oneshot, stop getting grabbed, actually find windows to attack, and actually damage and stagger him for crits.

I think Godfrey may be immune to the destined death debuff as he still has his grace initially, which he's divested of once he transitions into his phase 2, when he rejects his lordship

                  • Anonymous

I love his death line, one of the very few bosses who isn't a prick when they die... I'm looking at you Gideon, MORGOTT.

This guide has to be trolling with saying its an easier late game boss. Dude spams grab after grab after grab, stomp after stomp, theres is absolutely no windows for any type of punishment. Im using a dagger and can literally barely get hits off on bro without being 45 hit combo'd and then thrown into the air 3 times in a row. I could have coded a better enemy AI by slapping my d!ck on the keyboard. This guy is abysmal to fight and is in no way fun or enjoyable to battle.

                      • Anonymous

Honestly, one of the most epic boss fights ever. The second phase transition gives me shivers, when you realize that he was just messing around before. And the amount of respect that he treats you with after you beat the living **** out of him is commendable

                        • Anonymous

so normally id jump him with mimic tear and stand back and chuck lightning at him from my +10 Gransax but this might be the first boss to actually show me some respect so for now ill 1v1 him with rivers of blood

                          • Anonymous

I really like the fight, the only semi annoying thing is that when it comes to slow weapons, it is very hard to get a hit,
                            9/10

                            • Anonymous

Why would they give him a weakness to lightning if every single attack of his is timed so that it's impossible to get a single cast of anything off ?!

60% of the difficulty of this fight would evaporate if they hadn't made it so during phase 2, every short-hop is punctuated with a stomp. They legitimately just wanted to soften you up for the phase 3 grappler Hoarah, so they decided 'He can't move without an arena-wide AOE'.

I'm calling Godfrey the point where they ran out of moves for "dudes in armor with no magic". He's not hard when you figure his **** out but he's a dying breed.

His german Translation has a wrong line. Instead of saying "to be granted audience once more" he says "you will be granted once more" reffering to the tarnished instead to himself

arguably the hardest boss in the game tied with malenia. the first phase is easy asf to no hit but the 2nd phase is way harder to learn than anything malenia can do.

This fight is an absolute terror on NG+7. The earthquakes can stunlock you to death and if Hoarah grabs you even once, you're finished.

No guilt at all siccing the best spirit ashes I have on Macho Man Tarnished Savage.

So he gave up his traditions for Marika, then she exiled him once he became inconvenient, and THEN when she asked him to come back and do **** for her, he unironically came back to do what she told him to do.

This man is a certified simp, up there next to the PC Tarnished.

I'm so glad FromSoft got this boss right. I was waiting all game to finally fight him, and he ends up being one of the best boss fights (if not THE best) in the whole game.

Supposed to be an intimidating character but they gave him that ridiculous Cornish accent:

"oil kick yor 'ed in oil wiwl, olrite m' bapper? "

I wish that instead of the ash of war you could get a talisman or fist weapon that was like the champion ring or whatever it was called in DS2 that made your fists scale off of your stats

I'm I the only one who liked first phase over second, I mean don't get me wrong I think second phase is cool and I love his grab attack but there something about godfrey's axe movements that I really like.

Kinda weird he's immune to madness considering he's human/tarnished and you can summon shabiriri to help in his fight who uses madness

First Phase is my favorite. Second phase... the grab attacks are heart attack worthy.
While speedrunning, when he grabs... I just close my eyes coz there's nothing I can do about it.

Best boss in the game when his fat ass isn't pinning you to a wall and phasing the camera through his abs.

He really said “WE TARNISHED ARE A WARRIOR RACE, SECOND TO NONE! THERE’S ONE THING A TARNISHED NEVER FORGETS! HIS PRIIIIIIIIIIIIDE!!!” And his hair turned golden or something idk I just work here

I really, really enjoyed the first phase of this fight but feel his second phase would be better suited as a different boss. They both demand completely different loadouts and strategies, I'd love them as separate bosses but feel they do eachother a disservice. Neither phase can be 'too' interesting because each can only exist as 50% of the other. Overall I'd have loved it if Godfrey was the story battle and Hoarah Lux was an optional 'dream' encounter.

Im so sick of the Hourah Loux attack where he pulls the ground up with both hands. Either you have a full health bar or you're dead. Its essentially Hourah Loux Waterfowl.

I'm on my 3rd playthrough about to face Morgott. Have defeated Horah Loux 3 times. Two times on my own, a third time in my friends playthrough. I can't wait to fight this guy again, it's glorious, such a spectacle.

This time I will face him very aggressively with a rl150 quality build with the lordsworn great sword.

Rest in peace Serosh, rest in peace Horah Loux, you're both gigachads.

Tries his best to fit in by taking a white name and dying his hair blonde but eventually gets discarded for a younger boy toy from the suburbs. Tries to sneak back into the white woman’s house later in desperate attempt to get back with her. Died knowing that he went full ghetto and still got his ass beat by a younger suitor. That’s his real legacy.

I don't even mind getting beaten over and over again if it means getting to see all his cool moves. One thing they could improve is his phase 2 name. Going from the title of 'First Elden Lord' to just 'Warrior' is a big downgrade lol. It's not nearly as menacing as the boss itself.
