Godrick's Great Rune Use
If you want to use Godrick's Great Rune, you will need travel to the Limgrave Tower Bridge site at Stormveil Castle. The path ahead is guarded by reanimated Collosal Statues, you can choose to fight them or just make a run for it until you reach the end where you'll find a waygate. There are some Warhawk enemies at the end as well as a flock of non-hostile Eagles. Keep going straight until you reach the large door of the tower, head inside, and step on the mechanism to activate the lift.
At the top, is another site of grace The Divine Tower of Limgrave. Continue upward until you reach the top where you'll find a glowing sigil at the center between a set of large fingers. Approach and interact with it to restore the power of the great rune. To activate and use Godrick's Great Rune you must activate the Great Rune at the Roundtable, then use a Rune Arc after completing the task above. This Great Rune blesses the player's character by raising all attributes.
Notes & Tips
- You must consume a Rune Arc to receive Benefits from Great Runes

Mid-late game, this rune still has some value when used with oath of vengeance, wich is a temporary effect of the same stat increase. That's 10 levels up to everything before scarseals/soreseals to amp up your main stat or boost your quality build's effectiveness.
- Anonymous
Ironic that From decided to give us the best Great Rune in the game right at the very beginning of it. Boosts your defence, attack stat(s), makes weapon/spell requirements more accessible along with boosting everything else, and if you're a mad lad you can build around it to reallocate a ****-ton of levels to your liking.
Even if it's power were cut in half I would still argue in favor of it being the best, w/ Morgott's being a close second and Radahn's a distant third. The other three are way too niche to be considered "great" runes, more like "ok I guess" runes lol

Gets called "the runt of the litter" and "The weakest Demigod"
Actually has the best great rune in the entire game

Gotta be careful not to fall into the trap of relying on this thing in order for your build to work. Otherwise you're screwed when you run out of rune arcs
- Anonymous
This or Morgott's are really the only practically useful great runes for most situations. Radahn's is ok but doesn't really shine unless your HP/FP/ST are already high, Mohg's and Rykard's are niche and Malenia's is the equivalent of two possums screwing in a dumpster fire.

I don't know if they changed it since other comments. But for me, Godricks rune didn't activate when equipped, but rather when I activated it at the fingers on top of the tower..
The only stat it didn't affect, was intelligence, but that could be that I had 61 before I even found my way to the tower. Everything else when I sit to level, it shows stats 5 points lower than on stat screen itself.
Equipping it does nothing, and uniquipping it again also does nothing.

The wiki description for the rune is wrong. These effects are not 'passive'. Passive suggests you'll have the bonus active at all times just by having the rune equipped. You have to use a rune arc to activate them.
- Anonymous
My theory as to why Godrick of all people got such a busted rune is that it was "destined" to go to Godwyn originally but since he died it instead went to his closest living descendant which was Godrick.

They really do need to nerf this thing, because it simply renders all other Great Runes useless by comparison. I mean, you COULD use Radahn's Great Rune to increase your HP, FP and Stamina by 15%, orrrrrrrr... you could just use this thing to give you 5 levels worth of Vigor, Mind and Endurance for much the same effect, as well as EVERY OTHER DAMN STAT AS WELL. So how do you feel about getting A FREE FORTY LEVELS WORTH OF STATS every time you use a Rune Arc? The only time this ever loses out to any other option is when you're hitting almost all the stat soft caps.

On one hand, it looks cool on the HUD and it's a pretty good rune. On the other hand, it has Godrick's name on it.

I mean, it's not DS1 Ring of Favor and Protection good, but it's pretty good.

so you have to cross this long ass bridge and fight these tough ass enemies and ascend a huge tower to get an item that is useful but only usable if you have another item?
seems like a lot of unnecessary time and effort on both From and the players part
- Anonymous
This is still really good at later levels, especially if you are like me and put less points into vigor and mind bc the major soft caps for those stats happen at stat level 50 or something.

This rune is great for early and mid game if you're short of a few levels to try a weapon, spell or skill. Use it and see how you like the game play before investing in the attributes.

What could have been: boost all attributes by 3 increase rune gain by 10 percen.

You have to do a lot of extra steps after beating the boss just to equip it, in a special new menu. Then you have to use a rare item to activate it every time you die. I guess it's worth it, but not for me, I don't wanna be farming Rune arcs to get a temporary buff to stats. I have 8 rune arcs at lvl 87. Don't imagine I will ever use it except on a boss I'm stuck on, then will die instantly anyway because Elden Ring probably reads your input of rune arc and buffs the boss stats too, lol this game is such a troll.

It says u have to use a great rune, I have never used one but I can equip it just fine, is smth wrong here or do I actually have to use it

A word of warning, because I ran afoul of this as a new player: The boon is not effective during multiplayer, which can reduce your stats too much to use spells and equipment if you were using it to meet prerequisites. It can also drop your max equip load enough to put you in fat roll mode. Either don't use it to reach prerequisites or have a less ambitious loadout you can switch to when you get summoned.

PLEASE HELP: I did not get any item/Godrick’s rune when I defeated him and I can’t find anything from Godrick in my inventory. What am I suppose to do?
- Anonymous
Really good early and mid game rune. Morgott and Radadahn's runes are better later when you start to cap out on some stats.
Game changing for rune level 1 runs, just don't die! (Or farm rats, because we all know there is going to be a whole lot of death)
- Anonymous
Use rahdahn over this if you dont want to ruin online stat fluctuation while getting a nice boost.

It's a tempting effect but if you can only hit requirements using it your build becomes dependent on rune arcs to even function. Just like Godrick is worthless without all the **** grafted to him. How poetic!

Ironic that the most pathetic demigod has the better rune arc
- Anonymous
A really good rune for until over level 150 where percentage increase like's Radahn Rune start being better because of the stats hardcap, also keep in mind it can mess your equip load if you lose the rune and make you fat roll, i recomand alway having an alternate armor piece to switch for in case you die.

The Great Rune of Bad Habits and Getting Completely Gimped When Out of Rune Arcs

I know it's useless to lvl up that much after hitting caps, but considering you are at 94 points in every stat and you use Godrick's rune, you get a total free benefit of 328,825,709 runes
- Anonymous
The benefit if this ruin hides in the fact that it enables many builds to reach most minimum requirements for spells and weapons. Making it very hard to give up.

oh nvm i figured it out i was thinking this was a talisman, the great rune it should have been a talisman
- Anonymous
Only real option unless you are a really really high level build. For anyone on a first playthough, you get FAR more value with this over the other 2 stat runes and the heal on kill rune is worth nowhere near as much given the way flasks work in this game (gained back after kills).
- Anonymous
Iam already level 158 and i legit have NEVER used any other rune. I think the benefits of this one are just too good to pass up, while the other ones are way too situational.
Then again, i hardly ever even use Rune Arcs anyway and got over 60 of them in stock. If theres like a really annoying boss with huge damage, i might pop one for extra stats.
- Anonymous
Hey just in case you miss it you need to consume a rune arc to activate the rune after equipping it
- Anonymous
BTW
At SL1, with 15 VIG thanks to radagon soreseal, this gives as much +HP as Morgott's (652 hp), more +FP than Radahn's (84 vs 78), but less stamina than Radahn's (108 vs 115), so the best overall great rune.
- Anonymous
My levels don't go up anymore, my health & stamina bar go up when I use a rune arc but after the patch my levels and stats stay the same. Is it bugged or does it not show anymore?

Great rune when low/mid level. If you cross 200 and hit most soft-caps other ruins will overtake it.
- Anonymous
They should have let the effect last forever after activate it, like wearing rings or runes in previous games. These runes are boss rewards, and not just any boss, they are shard bearers loot. Kinda sucks that this has to be activated every time you die
- Anonymous
PSA: This is not a consumable item. After you acquire this item, you can go to any site of grace and sit down, then you can select "Great Runes" from the menu just like you would your flask, sorceries, physick, or ashes or war. Once you select "Great Rune" you can then equip this. Throughout your journey, you will obtain more Great Runes with different powers and you can swap them out.

People in these comments are saying you have to use a Rune Arc to activate, I'm unsure about this. First time you access the Rune menu at a grace site, you get the tutorial message and it mentions that "a Rune Arc will increase its powers". The phrasing "increase in power" means that the effect should always be existent, and a Rune Arc simply boosts the Rune's effect.

can anyone tell me why the great tune doesn’t work? i have it equipped and i have it activated but none of my stats changed at all.

i have the great rune i activated it at the top of the tower and i equipped it at a grace but it says that nothing has changed none of my stats went up 5.

Useful early game, less useful late game. That being said, you should probably only replace it after obtaining Rykard's Great Rune (HP back from defeating foes; useful for exploring, dungeons, and generally content with combined with Taker's Cameo), Radahn's Great Rune (15% to HP and 13%* to FP and Stamina), or Morgott's Great Rune (Increases total HP by a flat 25%).
- Anonymous
As of now I think it's buffing just Vigor, Endurance and Strength only. Not all of the attributes as it is understood from the description.

I have killed godrick and I do not have his rune, not sure what has happened or how to get it back

does anyone else realize that the rune is nestled between the corpse of the 2 fingers??

so if you die you loose it? well **** that men. doing savefile backups sucks ass

Great rune. Thanks to this rune I've met the min STR and END requirements for me to use a Gilded Greatshield AND a Partisan spear. My char is now literally the Godrick Knight patrolling Gatefront lol. Not to mention the bonus dmg and HP/FP/Stamina because +5 to attributes. Amazing rune honestly.
PS: The +5 attributes show up in your status tab, but not on your attributes screen when you're levelling up via a Site of Grace.

Something is wrong here. I restored Godricks great rune and used a rune arc. HP was buffed about 300. NO attributes increased.

does this great rune still apply even at 99 stats? if you have 99 str and use the rune will you get 104? or does it cap off at 99

Ive a bug here, i dont get any rune from rodrick, the caste is shutted thight

This is wrong. He doesn’t drop it when you kill him you have to go to the tower of limgrave
- Anonymous
I beat him but never got his drop to take it to tower. Went to tower and couldnt open door. Yay for bugs
- Anonymous
Its good for the early game but once you reached 60 vigor radahns is better.
- Anonymous
Would be nice if it didn't use rune arcs. Over 70 hours in and I've only gotten 8 or 9 of the things.
- Anonymous
This is the equivalent of 40 levels, lol. Overpowered as heck. I also love how it lets you use some basic spells without investing in certain stats.
- Anonymous
i love that its temporary but all the way until death it makes it a beautiful bonus for those extra hard bosses but not over powered or always needed as a passive also people who have issues of overleveling have something else to spend runes on its nice i love it
- Anonymous
Does resting at or teleporting to a site of grace while the rune is in effect cause it to deactivate? Or does it truly last until death?
- Anonymous
The only let down in elden ring is arguably it's core feature. The ephemeral rune system. I would complain but let's be real, there's just so much other good stuff it's hardly worth wining about.
This rune provide no bonus if you somehow have maxed stats already.

When I die during invading someone, do I need to activate this again after failure invasion with another rune arc?
- Anonymous
At first , I was like "oh nice, I'm now a part of godrick's covenant"... then I found out I need to use up rune arcs (basically embers) in order to activate it? Who remembers this sh*t?????
- Anonymous
YOU MUST USE A RUNE ARC. It's just like using an EMBER from ds3
- Anonymous
this rune is so much better than the others and you get it first, everything else is underwhelming
- Anonymous
uuhm... it's not in my inventory after I defeated him... what the f*ck?
- Anonymous
I mainly spend runes only after killing bosses/superior enemies. Otherwise I just dont care about losing them. So, great runes doesnt work for me, because i die all the time. I dont get attached to 'keep me alive'. Is a way to avoid eventual frustration, in the souls game, luls

Important to note that this rune also gives -15 to every damage resistance type. You shouldn't have it equipped unless you plan on using rune arcs

It does sort of seem to imply that a Great Rune should do something passively even before using a Rune Arc.

So here's what you do:
1. Kill Godrick and loot his great rune (NOT USABLE YET)
2. go to the top of Divine Tower of Limgrave and interact with the green circle thing in the middle
3. your great rune is now USABLE, but you still need to equip it
4. teleport to any site of grace and interact with the site of grace, then pick the Great Runes option similar to if you were changing your spell memories or ashes of war, and equip the Great Rune
5. Consuming a Rune Arc will ACTIVATE your Great Rune (Godrick's) and grant +5 to all stats until death or a maximum of TBD minutes.

It's pretty lame that you need to use another rune arc every time you die to see the benefits of the Great Runes, it wouldn't be so bad if rune arcs were fairly common but they are the furthest thing from. It's not really worth the effort to even use these.
- Anonymous

not a bug, you need to use a ring arc to activate the rune's boost. its boost is lost on death like humanity from the Souls series.
- Anonymous
From the “Great Rune Menu” tooltip that appears the first time you open the “Great Runes” menu from a Site of Grace:
“With the Great Rune menu, you can equip Great Runes that have had their power restored.
You can use a Rune Arc to give even greater benefits to your equipped Great Runes.”
That makes it sound like a great rune by itself gives benefits, but Godrick’s Great Rune does not raise any attributes. Either a bug or they need to clean up the wording imo.
- Anonymous
Pretty sure it raises attributes by 5. In case anyone was wondering.
- Anonymous
Since soo many people seem to be rather confused with this thing here's how to make it work:
1. Kill Godrick and obtain the rune
2. Restore the rune at the tower (Divine tower of Limgrave) past the lion miniboss (in stormveil castle) and cross the bridge with the 3 giants to restore it's power
3. Equip the rune at any grace (it has it's own section in the menu)
4. Actiave it by consuming a rune arc. you'll see all stats go up +5 in your stat menu. This effect lasts until your next death and can be reactivated by consuming another Rune arc.
If you only receive a tiny HP boost from using a rune arc you're likely missing one of the steps mentioned above. You can farm more rune arcs by joining up in jolly co-operation and help other players kill bosses.
An interesting "trick" I've noticed with Godrick's rune: if you have the rune equipped and active, then each time you reload your save a decent chunk of your HP and FP will be automatically replenished (this is on PC, not sure if the same works on console). It's cheesy, for sure, but it can be helpful if you run low on flasks while exploring and don't want to rest and revive enemies or wait an eternity for passive regen.
