Godrick the Grafted is a Demigod Boss in Elden Ring. This Elden Ring Godrick the Grafted Guide features boss locations, tips, strategies and videos on how to defeat Godrick easily, as well as boss stats and lore for Godrick. Bosses are unique and challenging Enemies that can be encountered all over the Lands Between. Shardbearers drop their own unique Great Rune and Remembrance capable of being transformed into powerful Weapons, Spells, Ashes of War, and Talismans for the player.

Godrick the Grafted is the ruler of Stormveil Castle, and is one of the first demigods and shardbearers that players can fight. He is a descendant of Godfrey and thus born of the golden lineage, but Gideon and Kenneth Haight believe him to be weak and unworthy to rule. Much of Godrick's power comes from the arms and legs of soldiers he's grafted onto himself, and especially the dragon head grafted onto his left arm during the second phase of his fight. His knights and soldiers wear armor that bears emblems of the golden lineage: a two-headed war-axe and the beast regent, Serosh.

Godrick is an optional boss, and doesn't need to be defeated in order to advance in Elden Ring. You can advance to Liurnia of the Lakes without defeating him by following the path north from Stormhill Shack, then dropping down to the west from the broken bridge and walking along the outside of the castle. However, Godrick is a shardbearer, and two of the four available shardbearers must be defeated before entering Leyndell, Royal Capital.

 I command thee, kneel!

I am the lord of all that is golden!

Godrick the Grafted Combat information

Negations (or Absorptions)

The negation numbers are the % of your damage that gets blocked. For example, if a negation is 60, 40% of that damage by that type will go through and 60% will be negated. Bigger number = less damage. A negation of 100 means no damage goes through, and a negation of -100 mean the enemy takes 2x damage from that source. 0 means damage goes pretty much as is.

Resistances

The resistance numbers are the buildup amount to trigger it. For example, if a resistance is 100 you must deal 100 points of the given buildup to trigger it. Note that these go down over time, and increase each time the effect procs. The values after the "/"s indicate the increased resistances after each successive proc.

Godrick the Grafted Fight Strategy

The Best Tips for Godrick the Grafted:

  • Be mindful of his combo attacks, and don't run in unless you see a clear opening
  • Use the arena to your advantage: there are many trees, pillars, and rocks that can help keep Godrick off your back. Just be careful to always return to the open center so you don't get cornered yourself.
  • Godrick is weaker to physical damage than elemental damage. Rock Sling is a good option for Intelligence builds, while Faith builds can use Bestial Sling
  • When using fist-type weapon, aim for sides of Godrick, as hitbox may not connect if hits are for the front.
Melee Users

Bide Your Time: The safest (but slowest) strategy for Godrick is to stay outside the range of his weaponry as much as possible, and only try to get in damage when he does one of his many punishable attacks. Stormcaller is best for this: when he starts spinning up a cyclone, get close enough to tempt him into a Storm Assault, then run behind him and get in a few hits until he recovers. Axe Lunge, Jumping Slam, and the fifth attack in Fury Swings also have long recovery times that you can punish. Once you get to phase 2, you'll also be able to punish all of his fire-breathing attacks as long as you stay close enough to get to his side before you get roasted. This strategy is particularly good for heavy weapons, which can use jump attacks or charged heavy attacks to build up Stance damage and get in critical hits.

Stick Close: A riskier but quicker strategy is to stay right up next to him. This will limit how many different attacks he does, but also means you'll need to learn the precise timings to dodge or block the remainder. But once you learn those timings, you can get in hits during the frequent delays while he's winding up attacks, as well as jump attacks when he uses Lesser Command in phase 1 and I Command Thee, Kneel! in phase 2. This strategy is particularly good for weapons that inflict status effects, since it'll let you get in more frequent quick attacks.

Magic and Ranged Users

Ashy Distraction: Summons are very useful to distract Godrick, but he hits hard so it's important to choose a summon that can survive his assault. Spirit Jellyfish Ashes is a good option due to its high defense and immunity to shockwaves. While your summons keep Godrick from rushing you down, you can attack him from afar. Once he notices you, keep backing off until your summons catch his attention again.

Circle and Strafe: Keep moving as much as you can. Try to stay towards his sides and back, out of his line of sight, and start casting or firing as he's finishing his attacks so that you can start moving again once he's back in action. Remember that running is often quicker and more stamina-efficient than rolling when evading his attacks with long windups that cover a lot of area.

Attacks & Counters

Attack Description Counter
Axe Swing Swings his axe in various directions. There's sometimes a long delay between when he raises his axe and when he actually swings it Roll out of the way or block with a shield. Because of the frequent delays, try to only start rolling when you see the axe begin to move towards you. If you learn which attacks have a long delay, you can get in a cheeky hit before he swings
Arm Swing Swings his left arm in various directions. In phase 2, his arm will have a dragon head, giving it substantially more reach and damage Roll out of the way or block with a shield
Axe Lunge Pulls his axe back, then thrusts it a long way forward into the ground Roll to the side when you see his feet leave the ground
Roll Rolls to the side and immediately readies another attack. The roll itself doesn't do any damage, but it will allow Godrick to quickly reposition himself Move away from the direction of the roll to avoid getting caught by the follow-up
Dragging Slash Drags his axe along the ground to his right, creating sparks, then slashes it forward Roll to his left when you see the dragging start to avoid getting hit by the slash
Jumping Slam Holds his axe sideways with both hands, then jumps into the air and slams down to the ground Move away when you see him grab the axe, or roll when you see him begin to fall
Lesser Command Raises his axe with the head pointing down, slams it into the ground creating a large shockwave, then pushes it down again after a brief delay creating another shockwave The easiest option is to run away when you see him raising his axe to begin this move. However, if you start jumping when you see the axe start falling and again when you see his shoulders rise, you can get in some extra damage with jump attacks
Fury Swings Holds his axe in front of his face, draws it back, then swings it five times: first counterclockwise, then quickly clockwise, then counterclockwise upwards, then twice downwards Either run away during the windup, or dodge each swing and use the long delays after the last four to hit him in between. If you do the latter, make sure to count the swings so you know when they'll be fast and when they'll be slow
Stormcaller Swings his axe around in circles, surrounding himself with a cyclone that reflects projectiles and knocks back the player. This attack and is followups are imbued with flame during phase 2 Back away as soon as you see his axe start to lift and prepare for the follow-up move. Don't use projectiles during this attack, since they'll just bounce off
Storm Assault Rolls to once side, leaps into the air, then swings his axe counterclockwise as he descends. Used if you're nearby after Stormcaller Run behind him while he's in the air and get in a few hits while he swings and recovers
Storm Blade Digs his axe into the ground, then pulls it out shooting a blast of wind that will turns to the left or right Wait for the attack to turn, then move in the opposite direction to make sure it doesn't hit you
Sever Arm Once Godrick hits 60% health or less, he'll chop off his own arm so he can graft on a dragon head. You can get hurt if you're near his arm when the axe fallse. He only takes half damage during this attack Despite the damage reduction, this attack is a safe opportunity to get in some extra hits, as long as you stay away from his arm
Phase 2
Sweeping Flame His dragon arm breathes fire in a long in front of him The fire has very long range, but his back and sides are completely unprotected during this attack. Run up beside him and get in some hits. If you have to dodge through the stream of fire, do so as close to the mouth of the dragon as possible so the stream is at its narrowest
Striding Flame His dragon arm breathes fire in a straight line as he walks forward Run to his sides and get in a few hits, but be aware that the flame can sometimes persist behind him as he walks
Grab His dragon head opens its mouth and then lunges at you after a brief delay. If it connects, he'll raise you into the air, blast you with fire, then jam you into the ground. However, the total damage of this attack is relatively low Roll forward when you hear the dragon roar, or when you see its head start to go horizontal
I Command Thee, Kneel! Raises the axe with its head pointing down, then slams it into the ground twice in quick succession creating small shockwaves, then once more after a second's pause creating a much larger shockwave As for Lesser Command, running away is the easiest strategy. It's risky to go for jump attacks the first two hits because they're so quick, but you can jump the third one as his foot touches the ground and the axes begin to descend
Bear Witness! Plunges his dragon arm into the ground, drags it in a full circle around him, then thrusts it upwards, raining fire in front of him Run behind him while he's twirling around, but be careful of getting too close since the dragon head will hurt if it hits you

Elden Ring Godrick the Grafted Lore, Notes & Other Trivia

  • Voice Actor: Ramon Tikaram
  • Godrick is a descendent of Godfrey, and thus a member of the Golden Lineage.
  • Enia describes Godrick as the weakest of the demigods.
  • It is possible to skip phase 2 entirely if you kill him during the phase transition. The transition will only trigger if he takes Stance damage when he's at 60% health or below, so you can also prevent it by exclusively using spells like Poison Mist that reduce HP without affecting Stance.
  • Cut content suggested that Gostoc is the son of Godrick, and was thus an elligible ruler of Stormveil and Limgrave. Another had Godrick reciting a speech about his forces returning to their home, bathed in rays of gold.

Dialogue

Lend me thy strength, o kindred.

Lowly Tarnished...
Thou'rt unfit even to graft...

Second Phase Transition:

Ahh, truest of dragons.

Lend me thy strength…

Nnngh!

Forefathers, one and all…

Bear witness!

During Fight (Phase 2):

Defeating player:
Great Godfrey, did'st thou witness?

...And one day, we'll return together...

...To our home, bathed in rays of gold...

Spent whole evenings on this guy the first time I played. NG+ and I smashed him first go without even using a flask. He seemed horrific the first time round, what a difference time makes.

The presence of the godslayer prayerbook and godrick's grafting of the dragon head onto his arm really makes me wanna see godrick with a blackflame spewing dragon head arm

We need more appreciation for Godrick’ me voice actor the way he says “BEAR WITNESS!” While doing such a badass move

He's manageable. Not easy for a player completely new to the Soulsborne franchise like me, but he's relatively easy to learn after observing and a bit of trial and error.

Hate his axe attack though, the one where he lifts it up and just stares at you, only choosing to drop it when you least expect it. Had the most trouble with that.

            • Anonymous

While technically he is really nice and cool early-game major boss, but as a character this guy has a personality of 6 y.o. kid. Kinda ruins the overall impression.

Has one of the best boss themes in all of Elden Ring, hands down. It's terrifying, frantic, and jumbled apart, much like Godrick himself. It perfectly encapsulates this fight, and sometimes even syncs up with his actions, the most prime example being the choir at the start of the second phase. The lyrics (spoken in basic Latin) are a good insight to his character, and it's sung with perfect chords and pitches to show that, while he may be "weak" to others, he's still a massive threat to us.

10/10, best boss design ever made by Fromsoft.

I just defeated Godrick but didn't receive the great rune and can't open the tower of limgrave. Do I have to replay?

                  • Anonymous

If you want to skip his second phase to keep the dragon's head in te arena, use the Poison Mist incantation and rot him via Rotten Stray(despawn the dog to not trigger his phase transition), apply poison and wait. Somehow he still uses second phase attacks like the triple I Command Thee Kneel.

I love his hearty gleeful laughter as he does the earthquake move and when he roasts you with his dragon arm, man's having the time of his life with his dragon head.

Did they really just lazily rehash Godefroy as a main story boss? Good god the other bosses being reused didn't bother me much, but this is just ridiculous.

FOREFATHERS ONE AND ALL, BEAR WITNESS!! (HAA HEE *music*) easily one of the best (if not the best) voice acting in all fromsoft games. boy do I miss this crazy son of a *****.

Its rather fitting/sad that despite how much Godrick fanboyed over Godfrey and aspired to be like him he turned out to be basically the polar opposite to him, Godfrey was noble and although he started out as a nobody tarnished just like you, he came to be an unmatched warrior-king, respected/loved by pretty much everyone, and took Serosh upon him to hold back his battlelust and "unkingly" warrior side, and shows respect towards you and takes his loss with grace when you defeat him and compliments your prowess unlike most of the other bosses, Godrick on the other hand, despite being a descendant of the Golden Lineage he's an absolute jobber who was always no match for the other Demigods, his subjects likely only obey him out of fear or because they don't have any other options, is a hated deranged maniac, and he grafts the body parts of other beings to himself in attempt to become stronger since he was always an emaciated weak old man for a demigod, and unlike Godfrey he mocks and disrespects you for being a "Lowly Tarnished", his story is honestly sad in a way. Long winded i know but i just thought it was cool to talk about this.

After Godrick was humiliated by Malenia, he went to uncle Morgott cause he wanted revenge on her, but he told him to **** off you maidenless ****, embarassing his own lineage. Then he went to mohg telling him how she humiliated him and wanted revenge, Mohg gladly accepted to help in questionable ways.

Do you think he grafted all of those limbs, including a ****ing dragon head flamethrower, onto his head because he’s compensating for something? My guess is that it was the guy who called you maidenless.

This dudes VA just absolutely chews the scenery, especially with his "Forefathers one and all, BEAR WITNESS!!!" and his gleeful hearty laughter when he starts incinerating the arena with his dragon arm, dude really has a palpatine vibe to his voice acting, he is far from being one of the harder bosses but his personality and the music is great.

I don't know why Godrick didn't just summon his true ultimate weapon.
The Soldier of Godrick if he did that then he would've won easily. In fact Godrick and the Soldier of Godrick were best friends for years if you want to know where that information comes from it comes from the internal game files when you beat Soldier of Godrick but nobody has done that before so hackers had to leak it. So I don't know why Godrick never summoned the man because he could've mopped the floor with us lowly tarnished. It's terrifying to think about a raving lunatic teaming up with a god.

why godrick feels like hes the only more "alive" character we fight? i mean, hes not talking about some nonsense like the others, and when he kills you, he mock you about it, just like horah loux and morgott; those 3 are the only characters that say something with sense and context
The others its like: "huur duur my babies egg" "im the malenia huuur duur" just nonsense, no wonder why golden lineage its my favorite bosses in this game

Fighting Godrick really is the high point of ER for me. While he’s not the strongest boss, he’s not ridiculously easy. In fact, he kinda seems like the Tarnished.

Think about it. We’re going thru the Lands Between acquiring Great Runes and Remembrances from bosses, pretty much grafting them into our builds.

So there’s always a little bit of remorse when I have to fight him. Knowing that together, we could’ve returned to Leyndell, bathed in rays of gold.

Wish I had realized sooner that that big ol dragon wing in the middle (well, side) of the arena is prob fire resistant — was game changing for me, having no available cooperators.

I don't imagine many of the people here would have any real trouble with Godrick, but for anyone who's new to the game or anyone planning a speedrun is reading this, there's a window for attack that I found when I first started playing that I've never seen anyone else exploit yet. When Godrick whips his ax around twice to call up storm winds in either phase, bait out the Storm Assault variant of the attack, the walk forward and right towards his left side. If you time it right, his landing swing will miss you entirely, giving you more than enough time to land an attack or two.

                                                    - Stroking dead dragon

Will someone tell me how he grafts the dragon to his arm? Its been bothering me
1: the dragon isn't even beheaded when he shoves his arm in... nothing?
2: the angle at which he shoves his arm in makes no sense

I once invaded someone who was about to enter the Godrick fight and the phantom he summoned as I invaded was named "Let Me Kill Him"

What about the attack when he drags his sword on the ground and there’s fire (even in the first phase). I need to know how to dodge it reliably…

He single handedly carries this games dogshit boss roster. Only complaint is the stupid wind aoe he will suddenly pull out on a whim.

It seems to me like godric has an obsession with returning back to the Altus Plateu, judging by his "Rays of Gold" speech. I feel it would be pretty easy for him to take both medallions if a simple lvl 1 tarnished like me could do it. Maybe he doesn't even ned the medallions. He does have a bunch of hands to climb the cliffs with, and his ice-skating bird friends could probably help him out aswell.

                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                            • Anonymous

                                                                              • Anonymous

                                                                                  • Anonymous

He left my Roundtable before I beat Godrick. I also skipped Stormveil initially for Liurnia and discovered a few graces in Caelid as well.

                                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                                      • Anonymous

Every other boss just do some random AOE **** that is impossible to dodge and keep spamming r1 like its nothing. Don't forget about those lazily designed duo and trio bosses.

                                                                                        • Anonymous

Such a shame that you encounter him so early, it's all downhill after. And it just comes off as so incredibly lazy when they copy paste him into an evergaol later. Seriously, why?? My guess would be some pretty harsh time and budget constraints so they had to reuse a lot of stuff rather than bother making original content.

                                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                                                • Anonymous

Everything about him is interesting, his fight is great spectacle and fun, even his soundtrack is on Ludwig level of greatness.

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                                                    • I wish grafting showed up more in this game. I understand it's supposed to be creepy and body horror, but I see it as almost "fantasy cyberpunk" and I find it really intriguing. It's not really something I've seen before in other media. I think it would be super cool if a DLC explored the concept more.
