Gowry (or Sage Gowry) is an NPC in Elden Ring. Gowry is a once great Sage who wishes to cure the young Millicent from a rotting sickness. He can be found in his shack, Gowry's Shack within Caelid. Speaking with Gowry is required to complete Millicent's questline.

See Gowry Lore

The rotting sickness that afflicts Millicent has no cure. When the Erdtree flourished, even the demigods could not stave off its effects, despite their nigh godhood.

Gowry's Location in Elden Ring

Gowry can be found at Gowry's Shack located in eastern Caelid, just before reaching Sellia, Town of Sorcery. [Map Link]

Gowry Questline: How to complete Gowry's Quest

Speak to Gowry in his shack to begin the questline involving him and Millicent. The walkthrough for this questline is on Millicent's page.

Beware of the Giant Dog found a short distance before the shack. Aggroing this dog and then speaking to Gowry may cause it to kill him.

As you progress the questline, Gowry will provide the player a number of rewards:

  1. He will give the player Sellia's Secret after agreeing to find the Unalloyed Gold Needle
  2. After Millicent leaves Gowry's Shack, he will sell these spells:
    1. Glintstone Stars
    2. Night Shard
    3. Night Maiden's Mist
  3. After giving Millicent the Valkyrie's Prosthesis, Gowry will sell Pest Threads
    1. Purchasing it from him will prompt some dialogue from him and allow you to ask him about his interest in rot and Malenia. You will also be given the Desperate Prayer gesture.

Once you have progressed Millicent's questline to the point that you can choose to invade Millicent or help her in battle, Gowry can be found crying in his shack. Ask him why he's crying, and he will ask you to kill Millicent, rather than help her in battle, as he wishes for her to become a flower.

  1. Assist Millicent: Upon returning to his shack, Gowry will be lamenting over Millicent's decision to remove the needle. Killing him at this point will not cause him to respawn, and he will drop Flock's Canvas Talisman and Gowry's Bell Bearing.
  2. Challenge Millicent: Upon returning to his shack, Gowry will be dead and you can also retrieve the Flock's Canvas Talisman and Gowry's Bell Bearing.

Dialogue in Elden Ring: Gowry

§Introduction
~
( 初対面 )

Oh, a pleasure to see you. a pleasure indeed.
I am Gowry.
A great sage,
in my day anyway.

I'd hoped to ask favour,
when one of your ilk came along.
A strapping young Tarnished,
able to cross the Scarlet swamp of Aeonia.

Don't fret, I'll provide fine recompense.
Should you accept..
I will teach you the secret of Sellia,
the town you see there.

[Accept]

Ah, then you're willing to lend a hand, are you?

I need your help to heal a certain young girl.
Her name is Millicent. You will find her beyond Sellia,
resting at the church atop
the cliff, stricken by the rotting sickness.

[Decline]
Ah, my apologies. I rather got ahead of myself, didn't I.
Well, no matter. I'm accustomed to waiting.
But if you decide to hear my offer, whenever that may be,
do come and speak with me again.
I'll wait as long as it takes.

[Talk after declining]
Ah, changed your mind, have you?
If you are willing to undertake my request,
I'll gladly share with you the secret of Sellia, the town yonder.

The rotting sickness
that afflicts Millicent has no cure.

When the Erdtree flourished,
even the demigods
could not stave off its effects,
despite their nigh godhood.

But Millicent's suffering
can be ameliorated.
For this,
you are to find a certain needle.

Seek the deep scarlet swamp of Aeonia,
outside Sellia's bounds.
The needle,
made form unalloyed gold,
is lost somewhere there.

First you must find the unalloyed gold needle.

It's hidden somewhere deep in the scarlet swamp of Aeonia.

Then I will tell you as promised.
The secret of the town of Sellia.

Ohh, you've found the unalloyed gold needle.
As promised I've detailed the secret of Sellia right here.
Go on, its yours.
Now, let me have a look at the needle.

[ Sellia's Secret]

§Talking with him after resting at a site of Grace,
after giving him the broken Unalloyed Gold Needle

( 無垢金の針を直した )

The needle is repaired.
Now it will forestall the rotting sickness I'm sure.

Will you give it to the girl, Millicent?
I will reward you in kind.

Millicent rests at the church atop the cliff,
beyond Sellia,
the town yonder.

Tended to by the witless pests who worship her,
or rather,
her rotting sickness,
as a god.

A wretched fate indeed.
The poor girl,
she never wished for any of this.

Thank you kindly.
For giving the needle to Millicent.

Now, she too, can begin her journey.
And stare her fate straight in the eye.

You've been a saint, through and through.
As thanks, I vow to impart to you my knowledge
of the lost sorceries of the Sellians,

descendants of the Eternal.

Do you find it peculiar?
That I would show such concern for the girl?

Well, I'm the one who found her.
A mere babe, in the swamp of Aeonia.

She is one of my dear daughters.
But the rotting sickness erodes one's memory.
I doubt that she remembers the first thing about me.

Oh, I must be getting old.
I didn't always worry so much.

Oh, you noticed, did you?
Indeed, Millicent did visit this hovel of a home.

It seems the memories eaten away by the rotting sickness yet remain,
but faintly.

However, she has no need of me, any more.

No, she must embark on her journey,
and stare her fate in the eye.
I mustn't impede.

As I've aged,
I've found the best way to aid the young...
Is to be forgotten.

Please make certain that little Millicent goes unharmed.

Like her mother,
she has the stuff to be a great warrior,
but commands only one arm,
and is yet preciously young.

This is a wonderful development.
Thank you for your kindness.

Now Millicent may fully realise her true warrior's potential.
Like her beautiful mother.

Green and undeveloped,
waiting to flower into magnificence.

What a wondrous day that will be.

In truth, before her,
I'd never seen a bud of such superior quality.
She might very well outshine her sisters.

Do you have an interest in rot incantations?
Then you might like to learn something of the history...
of Malenia, goddess of scarlet rot.

Queen Marika and her King Consort Radagon
were blessed with twin demigods,
and Malenia was one of them.

She was born an Empyrean,
carrying the scarlet rot.

An Empyrean...is no mere demigod.

In the age of the Elden Ring,
and Queen Marika,
the precious Empyrean was born.

A new god to forge a new Order.

Since Malenia fought Radahn,
and the great scarlet flower blossomed in Aeonia,
I have dedicated myself to her.

And to the resplendence of the Order of Rot.
The cycle of decay and rebirth.

The words of a true innocent,
the dear girl.

Well, perhaps this is just as it should be.

Little Millicent,

following in the steps of her mother,
no matter what.

This is their fate, after all.

[Why are you crying?]

Oh it's just...
I realised that I'd soon be saying my goodbyes to Millicent, and...
My eyes began to well...

She is to meet them very soon.
Her sisters.

And when she does,
she'll be defeated,
surely, and begin to flower.

[Become a flower? (1)]

Which is why...

If you happen to be present for the girl's fight with her sisters,
I ask that you side with the sisters and kill Millicent.

It must be done by your hand; no other.

Millicent trusts you,
rather deeply in fact.

Sever that trust.

Nurtured by betrayal,
her bud will flower most vividly.

When Malenia ascends to godhood,
Millicent too shall be reborn.
As a scarlet valkyrie.

[Become a flower? (2)]

You can't tell me you don't wish to see it.

The superior bud that is Millicent,
becoming the finest of flowers?

I beg of you, kill her.
With your own two hands.

§After assisting Millicent in the battle with her 4 sisters...site of grace icon

...and she pulls out the Unalloyed Gold Needle

( お姉妹の4人と戦いで助力上げたの後 )

Millicent, my daughter.
Why would you take out the needle?

You were so close.
So very close.
To becoming the fairest of all flowers.

Would you disown us too?
As your Mother did?
We children of the scarlet rot?

Millicent... Malenia...
Do you detest us, so utterly?

Other

  • "We shall meet again, you and I. There are countless pests to choose from." (First time killing Gowry)
  • "We shall meet again. As many times as it takes. For you to understand." (Subsequent killing at Gowry's Shack after the first)
  • "Have you taken the lesson, now? Killing me is an exercise in futility. All is well, provided you understand. Let's just pretend it never happened, shall we?" (Dialogue after talking to him at Gowry's Shack after he has respawned)

After killing Millicent at the Church of Plague

  • "O Millicent, my daughter... Who would prune your sapling flesh?
    Such...such cruel and vulgar violence..."
  • "O Millicent... My most promising little bud..."

Elden Ring Gowry Notes & Trivia

  • Killing him at Gowry's Shack reveals the body to be a Kindred of Rot followed by dialogue from Gowry suggesting his actual body is elsewhere. When reloading the world he will have respawned.
  • If you choose to assist Millicent rather than invade her, you may be locked out of getting the Flock's Canvas Talisman. Sometimes, Gowry cannot be killed and will continue to turn into the kindred of rot. It is not known if this is intentional or a bug.

stupid dog, it took me 10± attempt beat o Neil and the time when i come to give him the needle the dog killed him by one hit goddamn

What I wanna is the lore behind that dog being there like a security guard. I have so many questions about it.

        • Anonymous

There should be a grace next to him, I keep running back to this guy to do quests and each time I have to reset his dialogue by going back to closest grace and have to run back to him I feel the cringe in my heart.

          • Anonymous

My most terrifying headcanon is that the giant skulls all over Caelid's landscape aren't simply fossils. They're just a bunch more malformed Malenias trying to grow from the endless rot, like imperfect versions of Millicent and her sisters.

            • Anonymous

If you’re confused on who gowry is to Millicent, he’s a Kindred of rot, or a “pest” of higher intellect, he uses this to the end of trying to bring about the new age of rot, with malenia as it’s god, and the scarlet valkyries at her side, all of the children with the exception of Pollyanna (purely as she is called “adoptive daughter”) it appears, unless I’ve misconstrued that all the children of malenia don’t have a father at all, they’re buds, much like from a flower, she’s asexually reproducing, and a good piece of evidence for this is when gowry mentions finding milicent as a baby in the swamp, malenia exploded into a flower, and a baby just appeared apparently, because let’s be real here, how long is an infant going to last in the scarlet rot? It’s also why the pests are so attentive to her, in the dlc you find out if you’re kind to the rot, it’s kind back, and while milicent hates the rot, she hates the idea of being anything less than herself even more. It’s especially interesting if you choose to spare milicent, as gowry will despair, but when killing her he simply dies, or refuses to show himself, showing he was incredibly invested in getting her to this stage, a valid cantidate for a scarlet Valkyrie

Gowry's message at the sellia under-stair grace uses the same animation as when Varre bites your finger.
He also points upward but sometimes he gets his finger destroyed too, very strange.

                • Anonymous

His final dialogue unless I’m mistaken seems to confirm that he and Malenia were the parents of Millicent, if so then well done Sage.

                  • Anonymous

gowry's bell bearing will only grant you those items he was selling you at the time of his death. so if you get it ASAP, by killing millicent when she visits gowry before setting off on her journey, it will grant you only his sorceries. in order for it to grant you Pest Threads, you have to kill millicent later, after gowry has recognized that you've given her the prosthetic arm and pest threads has been added to his merchant inventory.

                    • Anonymous

You can get to him without aggroing the dog if you stick the the left (from Sellia) and jump up a few rocks.

                      • Anonymous

So yeah.... my noble paladin might have committed a terrible sin this day.... but i mean, the prosthesis is the objectively better talisman, so uhm.... i mean at least there's a pretty flower now... too bad Gowry seems to have nutted so hard he literally died as a result, because that posture can't possibly mean anything else.

Is there any reason to keep Gowry alive after completing Millicent's questline, going to defeat Malenia, and coming back to show Gowry Miquella's Needle?

                          • Anonymous

the section called GOWRY QUESTLINE: HOW TO COMPLETE GOWRY'S QUESTLINE is really confusing and i think maybe even has the incorrect text pasted into it. the first thing it says is "he will sell:" nothing to do with the quest, how to initiate it, what to do, where to find the needle, what to do with the needle, etc. i came here because i wanted to know if i should bring it to her at the church once i beat commander o'niell or if i shoudl take it to him first. hope i'm not doing it wrong because google is busted ai articles and it's not easy to find here

I hung out with this old dude cause he seemed lonely after his daughter left, but he started going on a long rant about some kind of deep-state conspiracy theory involving Malenia the Severed, and now I think I'm starting to suspect why his daughter left

I progressed it to the point of healing Millicent, than I immediately went down to smack Gowry. Upon reloading the area Millicent was standing in the shack instead of Gowry, she was saying she felt the urge to say goodbye to someone and felt empty but she had a task to focus on and thanked me again.

I was talking to him but I ignored the dog guarding the shack and the dog killed him, I got worried then I realized he was one of those things. Weird.

                                      • This baby faced weirdo was suspicious before but when I accidentally killed him and he turned into one of these things I was like EEWWW LOL WHAT?? A really unnerving type, on pair with caca connoisseur

Never got the dialogue where he says she is his daughter for some reason. Maybe because I beat ONeil before finding him? The rest of the quest continued as normal so whatever.

Damn it, I forgot to go back to Gowry before I could decide to help Millicent or defeat her with one of the four sisters. I didn't know I can receive a quest from gowry to kill her. This lore would fit perfectly for my assassin. The game is sometimes foggy as hell. I mean I love this game from my heart but without guides you will miss a few things. Even after my second run which should be a 100% with all quests and dialogues.

                                                      Thank you kindly.
For giving the needle to Millicent.

It's actually quite an important piece of dialogue too, as it confirms the Sellians' ancestors to be the inhabitants of the Eternal Cities.

When Malenia blooms for the third and final time, the five aspects of her self-hood will become her Valkyries/angels.

After all, we can't kill Malenia, only momentarily defeat her, and the missing portion of her second phase boss healthbar indicates she is yet to reach her full potential.

Hopefully, Age of Rot will commence one day.

                                                        • He's not a sage nor human. He is related to the Kindred of Rot people somehow, hoping to get a new rot queen after Malenia went into hibernation. If he would be human that would be the last thing to wish for. His last words confirm this, too. ("We children of the scarlet rot?")

I'm not sure I fully understand what Gowry means when he says Malenia and Millicent "bloom". Like ascend as goddesses of rot via some near death encounter? If that's so we've only ever seen Malenia do that, so I wonder what sort of transformation Millicent would have undergone if she bloomed too

I love how this dude got an own dinosaur dog standing guard in front of his shack. Would be cool if that one was neutral and didn't aggro until killing Gowry. Looks like a good boi. The name "Rex" would go for him perfectly.

The dog killed him through the wall before I could speak to him... Everyone seems to hate him so I don't think I missed out on much.

What a maidenless guy, he esentially made Milicent able to live normally again, but at the cost of being cursed so she could eventually bloom just like Malenia did, becoming a monster and risking countless lives. Good thing we helped her spend her last moments with courage and pride, and died being herself.

                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                      • Anonymous

Hi character design has strong parallels to the titular whisperer in Lovecraft's The Whisperer in Darkness.

SPOILERS (for both Elden Ring and the story):

They're both hermits that teach the protagonists forbidden and eldritch lore.
Gowry and the whisperer are both rigid and corpse like figures, with only their hands and face showing.
Both characters are unveiled to be an inhuman creatures masquerading as a human as a means to communicate with the protagonists.

                                                                        • Anonymous

Tarnished: "Oh boy a new NPC that requires visiting and reloading the area he's in multiple times over the questline he's involved in, I bet he has a convenient site of grace nearby to help facilitate this!"

Gowry: "Yes... Site of grace... That's exactly what I have nearby..." *Nervously pushes giant headed dog behind him*

                                                                          • Anonymous

Passively does "Well, What is It?", leading me to believe he is a scion of Giant Dad, the only man strong enough to oppose Let Me Solo Her. This might be why he worships Malenia, as that is the direct foe of jar man himself.

Similarly, Bernahl carries a Zweihander, and given that we find him in a shack, same as Gowry, it's safe to say that he took the weapon from the old man while he was distracted by a nearby bass cannon.

On top of this, he carries the Flock's canvas talisman, which also boosts the pyromancies of the game by proxy, even though it's not its own spell class anymore. Thus buffing the Black Flame spell his ancestors once wielded, though its melee variant is still used by Black Flame Monks.

Given this note, it's safe to say that the original Giant Dad fell to the Gloam-eyed Queen, who divided his power amongst the Godskins. Even further enforced by the fact that we need to kill a Godskin Apostle to help Millicent, knowing that she was adopted by a scion of Giant Dad.

However, Millicent removes the needle in the end, meaning she chose to die as a Dex Build, on her own terms, with no further links to Giant Dad. And when we return to Gowry, he is broken, having stopped doing "Well, What is It?". Killing him here will cause him to die for good, forever ending the Giant Dad Bloodline.

Whether this is a good ending or not is up to interpretation, though.

                                                                            • For the record you can't kill him until Millicent dies. It doesn't matter when or what the method of death it was, once she dies he will be mourning her and you can actually kill him for the items. The two most optimal points to kill him are after the Godskin fight in the Windmill Village after you give Millicent the arm (which requires killing her right after), or at the end of Millicent's quest after helping her. In both cases you get a talisman from Millicent and Gowry will have Pest Threads for sale.

                                                                              • Anonymous

Guys, he isn't the Outer God of Scarlet Rot. Though he might be the founder of the religion mentioned in the Flock's Canvas Talisman. And he's Millicent's adoptive father, as he tells you himself. The most reasonable assumption is he's just some guy with a rot fetish.

                                                                                • Anonymous

Wiki page is wrong. You can assist Millicent, exhaust Gowry's dialogue, and then kill him for the Flock's Canvas Talisman. Someone beat me to giving that tip in the talisman's page but this page reads poorly suggesting this isn't the case (or that it is simply not possible when helping her) which is false. Needs update for clarity and correction.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

This guy is for sure the Outer God of the Scarlet Rot. I think when he refers to Milicent as his daughter, I think it's only because Malenia and her lineage are infected with Rot, and thus he considers them his kindred (as in, he spreads his rot, and he considers the infected his family. That's why the bug things are called Kindred of Rot, they are a family of plague). He never actually sired Milicent and her sisters with Malenia, he only infected them with his power as the Outer God. When you kill him and he says his true body is somewhere else, I think it's sealed in the Lake of Rot. The God of Rot cannot leave his prison, so the best he can do is project a human form onto one of his Kindred of Rot vassals (similarly to how Morgott has projections we fight).

However, the thing that confuses me is why does he use Miquella's Needle? The purpose of the Needle is to halt the influence of an Outer God. Gowry, who I believe is the Outer God of Rot (however if you don't believe that, him being just a worshipper still makes sense) would probably want to rid the world of the Needle, right? Because it can be used to stop his (or his god's) influence. It's literally the only thing in this game that can cure the Rot, so it seems like it would go against his goals as associated with the Rot. Wouldn't he be more willing to destroy it so the only cure for the Rot is gone?

                                                                                    • Anonymous

Gave him the needle, he repaired it and as I was sitting idle in the safety of his shack the dog creamed him in front of me. Afterwards I continued millicents quest to the point of killing godskin then I decided to go back to his shack and for some odd reason he spawned again, not too sure what the trigger for him coming back.

                                                                                      • Anonymous

Gowry is literally the God of Rot possessing a kindred body. Which is why it doesn't matter if you kill the vessel. He's a God that can't be reached. He took interest in the lineage of warriors from the Shaded Castle and somehow he had children with Malenia.

                                                                                        • Anonymous

Something seems off here. Night Comet and Maiden's Mist should have been what he offers at the end. Night Shard should have been in the chest in Sellia and the Threads should have been on a Scarab or dungeon in Caelid

                                                                                          • Anonymous
