seriously though, is there a reason these things get the purple glow, or is it literally just trolling from from?

If you do not want to re-spec for a single farm (or just don't want to, I never have) another method of making the dragon run to farm gravel stones:

---Use Crepus's Vial and Unseen Form to run to the dragon from Dragon Temple Lift. I run straight to the dragon and never get hassled by skeletons. (It might not look like these two work together, but I get the best results using unseen form with crepus's vial)
---Two hand Dragon Communion Seal and cast Ekzykes's Decay on Dragon's head. (Inflict Scarlet Rot)
---Cast Chilling Mist weapon art to inflict frostbite, maximizing damage. (I use a cold claymore and beastmans cold cleaver with chilling mist)
---Fingerprint Stone Shield or Redmane Greatshield with Flamedrake Talisman +2 is huge boon for defense, along with Flame Fortification incantation if you struggle to survive the fire attacks. Opaline hard/bubble-tear too if still struggling.

---I usually kill the dragon in 2-3 minutes with one cast of Ekzykes's decay to open, followed by application of frostbite via Chilling Mist 1 or 2 times during the fight, with a few attacks of opportunity in between. The only major threat is the fire attacks, which can be partially mitigated by methods listed above. Physical attacks can be dodged with a little practice, or blocked with a greatshield with good fire resist rating.

---Apologies if my text crashes together, on most devices carrage returns seem to be ignored when posting on this site.---

---TLDR--- Crepus's Vial & Unseen Form to reach dragon quickly, Ekzykes's Decay and Chilling Mist weapon art to kill it. (Be sure to use adequate fire defenses)

On the right build, this is extremely easy to farm from the dragon: 60+ faith, 2 gravel stone seals +25, lightning damage physick, both incantation boost talismans, go under the dragon and cast Ancient Dragon Lightning Strike. Fully charged and with good rng, it does ~2k damage per cast. On the run to it, using a sacred infused weapon with sacred blade will perma kill the skeleton beastmen if you don't want to risk taking damage or dying on the way.

better farming strat without having to waste a larval tear to use a whole different build for just 10 minutes anyway:
            1. get fallingstar jaw
            2. invest into min req to wield (use heirlooms/soreseals if you have to) put extra points in str for better magic damage
            3. max out jaw/+9
            4. mix magic damage upping tear and cerulean hidden tear
            5. go to temple lift dragon
            6. drink physick, lock onto head and spam l2 because of pierce damage and magic even as it wakes up and starts attacking
            7. dodge and l2 on its head until it dies, try not to go too far or it leaves too btw
repeat until satisfied with gravel stone stacks

The game really puts an emphasis on these. You have trudged through a hellish dungeon and at the end is an item whose swirl has all the rainbow's colours indicating that it is the item of items. You pick it up this holy grail and voilà, it's a gravel stone.

8 of them can be bought by the Nomadic Merchant on the Atlus Plateau at the Forest-Spanning Great bridge site of Grace.

There is one in the Guardians' Garrison in the Mountaintops of the Giants. You get to it by going to the wooden planks by Chief Guardian Arghanthy (where you find 5x Smoldering Butterfly) jump up on the wall and then onto the nearby roof, follow the wall and there will be a corpse with 1 gravel stone on it.

Not sure why its not mentioned here, but Yelough Anix Tunnel is by far the best location to farm these if you don't want to fight the dragon over and over again.

there are maybe half a dozen in the stormcaller church at altus plateau, also it says there is only one on the dragon, but I collected at least five from there as I climbed up its wing, if you look carefully you'll see them as you climb up the dragon.

                      • I always laugh when I see that some "gravel" is a rare crafting ingredient. Like, you're in a world with huge jagged rocks EVERYWHERE, but your tarnished is like "Ooooo, this one is pointy...so rare". Anyone know if the Japanese name for it has a different connotation than "gravel"?

There's a few more you can pick up in Crumbling Farum Azula, to the left of the wounded dragon, on the platforms where you can drop down

Farming implies a repeatable process. You can only kill the dragon south of the lift grace once. Not farming
