Great hammer main here and also a small hammer main for pvp... the buff is ridiculous. Did they forget to tone down hit stun? Because I keep getting triple r1 combos... even good players can’t react to any mix up. Great hammers needed a damage buff so they stopped losing trades to katanas, thrust swords and specifically heavy thrust swords. And the latter needed a dmg nerf too. But a great hammer speed buff was totally unnecessary; it now plays exactly how small hammers are supposed to play. Great hammer is now good for all the wrong reasons.

Idk man, the whole weapon class feels useless when double straight swords ALWAYS win the trade. Not to mention the two handed moveset won’t knock jump spammers out of the sky reliably. I think giving jumps partial i frames and recently buffing jump recoveries was the worst balancing decision ER could’ve made, after giving PS weapon move sets double damage of course. The problem isn’t that jumping is good or PS is good, the problem is that jumping and PS beat collosals and great hammers at trading, which is what they are supposed to win at.

I think a good way to balance them would be to give strike damage bonus against armor. Hammers should be effective against armor, that is their whole point.
Maybe strike damage should ignore a certain percentage of defences. Like ignoring 15-20 percent of targets defences.
I cant comprehend why thrusting weapons get such generous bonus form counter hit which is 30% baseline and have a talisman which boosts it by another 15%, while hammers get literally nothing on top of clunky moveset.

Note: Great hammers are perhaps the heaviest-hitting weapon type that can perform 2 dual wielding L1s against malenia as a true combo, for quite a lot of damage

I know there's way more meta options but these things are just so fun I keep coming back to them. The two handed moveset feels like just enough of everything,, decent speed,, hyperarmor, poise damage, actual damage, some of the chunkier ash of war options. Kind of short though., which is understandably a big no for some.

As of patch 1.06 all great hammers swing faster two handed.
This is probably because they use an almost-the-same moveset as great-axe moveset, and it got buffed substantially.
Since the pickaxe uses the great-axe moveset while one-handed too, its faster both ways.

I really love that weapon class, both in pve and pvp. I thought It's gonna be tough for me in pvp because of short range, but man, the moveset and poise makes up for it, especially since 1.06 R2s are very, very good.

Better to power stance great hammers than wielding a colossal tbh. Equivalent weight and higher dmgoutput and much quicker. FROM really messed colossals

Image up there about lenghts is wrong. There is no "Greatclub". I guess it means the Large Club as the other only option, the CURVED Great Club is already named as "Curved Club".

The moveset for greathammers is surprisingly great (no pun intended). R2's are good, 1-handed R1's are very good, and the unique running attacks are also very solid.

greathammers are the best of the "great weapon" category of armaments unlike greatswords and greataxes they give you enough poise during the hyperarmor frames that you poise will never be lower when swinging you only need 10 poise to be able to poise through 2 handed maces with greathammers and they can poise through any of the lighter attacks with 0 poise investment whereas the other two "greatweapon" classes need 42! poise to hyperarmor through a straight sword

I love great hammer in this game man, they do over 40 poise on their 2 handed charged attack, you can stagger a lot of bosses that have 80 or 120 poise in 2 or 3 charged heavy, and the added hyperarmor is soo nice.

Seen some comments about these weapons being parriable when they werent in DS. keep in mind the 'great hammers' in DS were ultra great weapons which in elden ring have been categorised as colossal weapons. Colossal weapons being the weapons that cant be parried when two-handed. Elden ring's greathammers are essentially what the greatsword class is but for hammers. This is the exact same for great axes as well.

Too bad pickaxe don’t get the same rolling light attacks the other great hammers get. The slam down attack isn’t great. I love the turn around spin move on the others.
Same two handing them with the running heavy attack. I love the underhand swing it had for the rest but not the pickaxe. Too bad because the pickaxe looks amazing.

Most of these are actually amazing off-hand weapons. They swing incredibly fast and hit fairly hard for a 1H L1.

Bloody pickaxe with wild swings is actually fun. Like somewhat swinging big ass weapons fast and somewhat horizontally. Need to see if it works on the Berserk greatsword. That would be nuts. But also, so many weapons I've yet to find.

I compiled a list so you can have an idea of which infusable greathammer is best for you when running 80 Strength, along with ordering their damage values. Just know that Pickaxe is either the best or worst greathammer depending on the situation, as pierce is very good for trading, but strike is better for upfront damage.

I'm working on a stagger build for PvE and been doing some testing on the Knight of Zamor enemy just north of the Zamor Ruins site of grace. Greathammers seem worse than greatswords; when powerstancing greatswords I can interupt the enemy attacks with jumping L1. With greathammers (powerstancing the Pickaxe) I can not. The jumping R2 always interrupts the attack though. As far as I know "stagger potential" is locked per weapon class, which is why I conclude that greatswords are bit better than greathammers in regards to jumping L1s.

It's pretty nice that you can put wild strikes on these. You can build up a big stagger damage with the great mace, or decent blood buildup with the great stars. It's nice to have a hyper armor button.

Why does Fromsoft never implant realistic warhammers? Hundreds of ridiculous overdesigned swords and other colossal bullshit but not a single realistic warhammer.

Everyone going 80 STR for these, please do yourself a favor and stop. Lets be honest.. youre mainly gonna be 2 handing these heavy weapons so settle for 66 STR which equals 99 when 2 handing and save yourself some stat investment. You can easily achieve a 66 STR build and stay under 125, out of the tryhard meta range where more viable builds will crap all over you in 1 hit.

So out of curiosity Ive upgraded some choice Greathammers for my STR build. At 66 STR, 2handing in order to achieve 99 STR, here are some results.

Heavy Great Stars = 713 AR

Heavy Great Mace = 748 AR

Heavy Brick Hammer = 762 AR

If youre going for the strongest single hits possible, it looks like the unassuming, early obtained Brick Hammer is your best bet.

On a strength build, the Great Mace has the highest damage. The problem here is that the Iron Greatsword has more AR than the Great Mace...

slower non thrusting or slashing weaponss such as warhammers are somewhat gimped in the ash of war department. they should atleast give warhammers something akin to the spinning slash weapon art. like the "spin bash" the great wooden hammer and spiked mace had in ds3.
they should also slightly speedup the ashes such as eruption and prayerful strike. no sense in giving weapon class that relies on slow but decisive blows a skill that performs an even slower animation.
