I don't know if this is noted elsewhere or if maybe it affects more weapon types, but AFAIK, Great Spears have an unique feature while fighting on horseback / Torrent: the first part of the charged heavy attack can hit the same enemy several times. You can move next to an enemy, hold R2 to charge the heave attack, and it will keep hitting him four or five times before the finishing hit. This will also keep staggering smaller enemies, making them unable to fight back or dodge the last hit.

All other weapons I tested (including normal spears and halberds) can hit different enemies during the charge phase, but will only damage the same enemy once before the finishing hit.

Finally did a playthrough with Mogh's spear. I didn't build very optimised, forgot White mask and stuff. But omg how on earth did they nerf RoB back in the day ( rightly so ), and leave this one as it is? If it ( the skill ) got nerfed to about half its current power, it would STILL be very good XD . It also kills everything above you , like imps in catacombs if there's a floor above you, it can even kill Patches before he jumps down ( don't do that obviously but I was trying out exactly how high up the skill hitbox went and it's ridiculous lol )

From the moment I understood the weakness of normal moveset, it disgusted me. I craved the strength and certainty of powerstance. I aspired to the purity of the blessed L1. Your kind cling to your "honor" as if it will not...decaaay and fail you. One day, your "skill" will prove useless, and you will beg the PSGS to save you.
But I, am already saved. For the PSGS user is immortal.

It seems that ant skull plate shield has the potential to counter power stanced greatspears.

But first of all if you want to employ it you must understand that shields have a stat called “hardness” which is detailed in this website, but what you have to know is that weapons bounce off a shield when their hardness is inferior (not equal) except when attacking two handed and any running, jumping attacks and charged R2s.

Ant skull shield has a hardness superior to greatspears. Weapons do bounce off when you attack with powerstance, so those attacks from crouching L1s will stun them and you’ll be able to strike back.

Same situation happens with spears, though these have an annoying running attack so you’ll have to watch out for those. Tbh most dual spear users are brainless so you’ll be fine.

If you want some extra perks to the shield you can equip shield talisman and/or use scholar greatshield with demihuman queen staff to avoid using a talisman slot. For that you’ll need 12 int which can be easily obtained with vagabond starting class and using rennala crown.

Now I don’t know which attacks can be used to punish that bounce off, whether a guard counter or a TS poke. Besides it can be easily countered by antspur rapier with rot grease swap or pretty much any of the attacks mentioned.

But what’s certain is that it helps against spear users and that you can’t fully rely on the guard

As a powerstanced great spear user (mostly invasion experience) here is some tips to deal with them.

1. Long reach weapons like halberts can punish PSGS if you have better spacing than opponent. If you are quite good at spacing powerstance straight swords can melt a PSGS user if latency isn’t super bad.

2. Watch out for jumping r1 as it has a lot of reach and is a common follow up after a crouch poke to mix up their attacks.

3. Endure on high pressure weapons like star fist forces them to lessen pressure against you.

4. If you’re at edge of their attack range run instead of roll away as it’s harder to punish due to being faster and having a less predictable direction. (Doesn’t work close up!)

5. If they are trying to vortex you with crouch pokes by waiting for a roll, instead attack them. Ideally with a hyperarmor or very fast weapon.

6. Best advice I can give is try out this setup and see how people avoid your attacks. Will feel a awkward to use PSSG until you get more experienced with it.

Those are way better than normal spears or, atleast, to me it seems like they have a bigger hitboxes(obv, otherwise they wouldn't be GREAT spears). I stubbornly decided to do the bossfight against Fortissax with Granssax spear without using it's weapon art, the amount of times I missed was painful.

I find psgs quite fun to use in pvp. Vykes paired with treespear is a fun combo. I find myself rarely using crouch attacks anyway so idk why everyone hates it so much. The recovery time for attacks and stamina consumption leaves room for error too so it's a little more balanced. I think it's just a good pick, not utterly broken like other builds.

I met a guy today who put spinning slash on the great lance. We had a great duel, but like... did anyone knew it was possible? And also why is it? Putting an ash with the word "slash" in it onto a weapon that has no slashing edge feels a bit counterproductive.

Yknow besides the fact the great spear class feels really redundant (a poking weapon, but slow with more stagger? by god! give that man a promotion) there were a few things that could have saved it by maybe having more than 1 in the whole game that can be infused ?? besides that it really sucks that this and their normal sized cousins have gotten turned into an instant red flag in pvp. I did it! i found out how to dodge the stupid crouch attack! (most of the time) Start running away from the dual-spear guy, and then dodge when you're about to leave the range of the spears. Most of them will try to make you panic roll, so instead force them to attack and dodge accordingly.

PSGS can be very tough to fight however there are ways to beat it. For those PSGS players that tend to wave dash at you to psych you out into panic rolling instead attack them and keep up intense hyper aggression. Don’t give them a second to breathe and force them to back off. I’ve had the most success with the knights greatsword by free aiming my hits. Play very close attention to how they react to certain actions and try to mix up what you do. If they are running from you watch out for a quick pivot jump attack. You can force them to roll or jump by using the gravity stone fan and punish accordingly with either a roll catch or by backstabbing after their jump attack. In order to effectively counter PSGS you need to stay calm and keep up as much pressure as you can. If they are using BHS or quickstep delay your attacks slightly to catch them or use ashes of war that cover a wide area around you with a lingering hitbox such as flaming strike or storm stomp. Having an offhand dagger or thrusting sword can be used to get some chip damage on them over the course of the fight and can be used to quickly finish them off when they get to low health. Overall it will be a tough fight unless they aren’t very good but they can be beat and it just takes some practice.

The most underwhelming class out of all the heavy weapon classes for pve. Like every aspect of them feels mediocre in comparison with the other heavy classes. From its individual hit damage, dps, stance damage, moveset, etc. liek only two are above average simply because of their ashes.

If I'm reading the game data right, the dual-wielded running attack with Great Spears hit 10 times. What's the interaction with things like Rotten Winged Sword Insignia, Millicent's Prosthesis, and Godskin Swaddling Cloth? Do the multiple hits trigger them as often as the numbers suggest or is there a penalty?

Hi guys, Note: You use less stamina per hit with a (Great) Spear, while holding the shield up. I was able to do one more hit with the pike at 40END and also with the lance. I have yet to test whether it affects the damage.
