Great Runes in Elden Ring are Key Items dropped by shardbearer Bosses whose powers can be unlocked at Divine Towers and then activated with Rune Arcs to strengthen the player until death. This page covers how to activate them, their names, effects, respective bosses, and Locations.

Mending Runes, which play a significant role in Elden Ring's Endings, are also found below.

Great Runes, and Mending Runes, are not kept in New Game+.

Great Runes of Elden Ring

What is a Great Rune

Great Runes are unique Key Items dropped by Demigods, the main Bosses of the game, which bestow their blessings after using a Rune Arc.

Players must obtain two Great Runes and speak with Finger Reader Enia before entering Leyndell, the Royal Capital.

How to acquire Great Runes

Great Runes are dropped by Demigods, which can be found inside Legacy Dungeons.

How to equip Great Runes

Great Runes can be equipped from the "Great Runes" menu while resting at any Sites of Grace.

They are only available from this menu after restoring their power at a Great Rune's respective Divine Tower.

After equipping a Great Rune, consuming a Rune Arc will grant you its power until death.

What is a Rune Arc

Rune Arcs are Consumable Items that grant the blessing of an equipped Great Rune. Alternatively, they can be used without an equipped Great Rune for a slight increase to maximum HP.

Rune Arcs can be found throughout the Lands Between, but there are two methods to consistently collect them:

If you change the equipped Great Rune, the current Great Rune's effect will be removed. Reactivating the new rune will require another Rune Arc.

    • These could've been cool if they worked when summoned.

They don't even buff you that dramatically tbh. Instead I'm sitting on a fat stack of rune arcs I'll never use.

Ok, my 2 cents here since everyone else is suggesting improvements. Since this is already the ER version of the humanity system, why not make it a requirement to be powered up to go online?

Then everyone has great runes active, even phantoms, making builds that much more unique between players. And that way, it's literally the system from all the other games, but you get a bonus buff while "human".

I do understand the move to "humanity always" to support casuals, but with the way they set up the great rune system otherwise, it makes more sense to tie it TO online.

ds3 syndrome even affecting the ember mechanic lmao, most creative great rune still just chalks ups to "poor man's fap ring" and even then their broken view on what substantial % increases are now makes it borderline worthless

I wonder if there’s a way to completely restore the great rune of death with the mending rune of the death prince and Maliketh’s rune of destined death?

            • Anonymous

It really sucks that pretty much all of these effectively amount to more HP. Radahn's at least should've been a straight up 25% buff to attack power or something

              • Anonymous

should be useable in multiplayer. ttk is too fast anyway i wouldn't mind everyone having an extra 40 stats worth of defense

                • Anonymous

Fromsoft were obviously terrified of making these OP. So much so that they overdid the gate-keeping here IMO. First you need to beat the boss carrying the rune, then you need to get to the top of the corresponding divine tower to 'restore' the rune (and every single one of them is rigged with tough enemies, annoying parkour areas, and / or other bosses), and then you need to use a semi-rare item to activate it once equipped (as well as every time you die or want to swap which one you're using).

Bit much for the sake of things that, in most cases, confer benefits little better than what you can replicate with one or two talismans. It really should've been a case of either deactivated runes conferring a weaker form of their active power, or Rune Arcs only needing to be used when switching great runes - losing the benefit on death as well is just annoying, and the main reason people don't bother with them until they're well into the game and have a large stash of Rune Arcs as a result.

                  • Anonymous

The whole fancy activation thing you do for these looks and feels extra stupid because the rune does nothing without a rune arc. Not even a small passive buff, lol. Why bother

I think it would have been interesting if activating Great Runes permanently gave you their abilities but you could never change them. It would definitely be frustrating at first but I think it would become an appreciated part of character building as time went on. Imagine the builds you can make with a +5 in every stat or permanent heal-on-kill/hit.

                        • Anonymous

Give me a great rune that increases rune acquisition and it stacks with golden scarab talisman and the gold McChicken feet nuggies and you've finally piqued my interest. Otherwise, these should be called 'mid runes' because they aren't that great at all

                          • Anonymous

They should have made a great rune that boosts death blight so we can see more death blight builds. Cause honestly death blights sucks sadly it's so easy to counter and there's nothing helpful to boost it. They should really balance out death blight at least because we all love that death blight effect lol one can only dream :')

                            • Anonymous

I think they should make the buffs permanent, but require 15 rune arcs each and like 300000 runes to activate

                              • Anonymous

I honestly think they should've made the buffs way stronger and made Rune Arcs scarcer to balance it. Maybe also give them as a reward for successful invasions.
They could've been great to get players, particularly new ones, to do co-op. Getting rewarded with rune arcs currently just feels a little dull when I forget Great Runes are even an option most of the time.

calling it right now, since people like to call er dark souls 2: 2 there's gonna be at least 3 dlcs with a great rune for each one that you nab up after beating the big bad at the end that unlocks a whole new ending since there isn't one for getting all the great runes in the base game and it's only available after beating godfreys hidden brother alvian, professor of the second vice

                                  • Anonymous

Maybe in the DLC we'll also be able to find Ranni's Great Rune that she casted aside. Would be rad if it had the power to regenerate FP, either passively or upon kills since her brother Rykard's restores health on kills.

                                    • Anonymous

How cool would it be if we ever got Miquella's Great Rune in the DLC and it'd constantly radiate a "Charm" status effect that makes enemies within a certain range your ally once it procced. Build-up could depend on the type of enemy and how far away you are from them, for bosses it could just lower their attack/defense by a certain % when it proccs or make their AI less aggressive.

                                      • Anonymous

Kind of a shame there isn't an ending for claiming all the great runes in a single playthrough. I think it would've been neat as well as fitting in with the whole "wE'rE FiXiNG tHe Elden Ring" whole point of the game.

                                        • Anonymous

i think great runes are like an item you go hey thats neat the first time you play through and then you realize that buffing yourself is way more efficient and i can do it as many times as i want compared to the amount of items i have in the game. i can always get more mana

                                          • Anonymous

Can't wait to see what fills those empty slots in the Great Rune menu. More Great Runes? Maybe weaker versions that don't require a Rune Arc to activate? I'm excited for the DLC

                                            • Anonymous

It's a shame that the buffs aren't more unique. Most of the effects can be recreated with other items and don't require a rune arc. And the effects are kind of crap anyway.

It might be nice to get some kind of permanent buff or different ending if you get all the great runes as well. As it is, I don't really see the point of any of them.

                                              • Anonymous

Idk... the other great runes may have interesting side effects, but godrick's is the swiss knife of them. Like, 30-ish levels for free? What can possibly top that?

And you can't even experiment with the other great runes because they re dependant on your stats being at absurd levels or require you to do something very specific, and by the time you actually get to test them you already killed the elden beast.

                                                • Anonymous

Rykard’s is good outside of bosses. Chip damage from a stray trash mob hit can add up and this passively cleans that up instead of having to waste a flask or FP on a heal spell

                                                  • Anonymous

I don't think the great runes are underwhelming. I think it was HUGE mistake to make them go away on NG+. Most of the good ones you get near the end game. It makes so much more sense to be able to use them after having beaten the game and enjoy the benefits they give you in a fresh play through.

                                                    • This is just my opinion, but a way to make the mechanic more interesting would be to perhaps give the Great Runes some kind of passive benefits that don't revolve around giving you more base stats, kind of like the Physick, functionally similar to a kind of 5th Talisman you can only change at Sites of Grave, and that the benefit is minor enough to where it doesn't require a Rune Arc to function. Something like Godrick increasing the power of fully charged heavy attacks, Radahn increasing the power of jumping attacks, Mohg increasing damage when blood loss is inflicted nearby, Malenia giving more power on successive attacks, etc.

                                                      • So many people are complaining that the Great Runes are underwhelming... they aren't. Great Runes, like many items/skills in this game, can be pretty plain and boring when used by themselves but by putting your imagination to work and combining different items/skills and different strategies, you can come up with something viable.

As an example, Rykard's Rune is very useful for clearing areas with cooperative summons. You can devote more flasks to FP and let your teammates kill enemies to heal you, meanwhile blowing everything away with the extra FP you have. It's actually broken asf because you can get HP from checking bloodstains.

                                                        • great runes are honestly really underwhelming, they're all just related to your health and really the only worthwhile rune is godrick's unless you really need the extra health, the extra health, the extra healing, the extra healing, or last but not least the extra healing

your options are +5 to all stats, more health, or more healing

                                                          its so boring lol

                                                          • Anonymous

A lot of people complaining that rune arcs are scarce. There's a really simple solution...

Offer yourself as a cooperator to other players, you'll get rune arcs from cooperative play all the same. Plus you get to help someone out.

I go through them often and still have so many they get defaulted to "the chest" because I can't carry anymore.

But I mostly do co-op outside hard bosses when I play, so that's just my experience with rune arcs.

Also, the first great rune you get, Godrick, is definitely the most impactful if you're into sorcery/incantation, because you can get that little extra faith or whatever to top off your build while gaining hp, fp, stamina and equipment load all from one buff.

In short, if you're just starting this game, don't sweat rune arcs that much, just do co-op and you're golden. And don't bother with other great runes unless you just want to experience all areas, they're a waste of energy once you realize the first rune received is the best.

For the sake of full clear, I did them all and was pissed when they went away in NG+, so now I just rock Godricks whenever I start a new play-through.

                                                            Praise the message!

So many players with skill issue that doesn't want to use great runes cuz they last till you die. Just don't die bro, It always works for me.

                                                              • Anonymous

Do you lose the effect even if you die in an invasion/duel? Alternatively, do you even get the effect in an invasion/duel?

                                                                • Anonymous

Horribly executed mechanic. Rune Arcs are far too rare, and the Great Runes are tied to the game's story, so obviously you can't keep them for NG+. Also, they're just buffs. Ok, it's nice to get stats or healing, but....that's it? No special interactions with the environment (immunity to rot maybe), no special transformation (e.g. the goat-dragon in DS3), not even resistances or....anything cool at all? Give me my damn embers back, please.

                                                                  • Anonymous

if youve played the game multiple times and can reliably go for a while without dying then these can be pretty good. they’re practically worthless for new and inexperienced players though. rune arcs are not common enough compared to how often a new player is going to die. for this reason i think that every boss that is considered a Great Enemy or higher should automatically activate an equipped great rune or drop a rune arc, similar to ds3 ember system. it would make them a bit more accessible for people who arent good at the game yet

                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                      • Anonymous

These are all really ****ing lame buffs, i hope they make a talisman or tear that increases your attack power when frostbite happens in the vicinity.

                                                                          • Anonymous

I feel like they tried to make it like a more advanced version of the humanity/ember system, but they kinda ****ed it up and made the rune arcs more rare than they should be. But I shouldn't complain because it was probably pretty hard to keep a balance between having too much or too little. Either way I like the system even if it has it's flaws.

                                                                            • Anonymous

My question is why do most people have this thought that great runes were made because of the shattering or from the shattering?

I’ve seen this a lot. Actually it’s the only idea I’ve seen about the great runes, it’s seemingly ubiquitous

But it doesn’t make sense to me

                                                                              Maybe I’m missing a quote?

But Morgott’s rune exactly says: “This Great Rune is the anchor ring that houses the base, and proves two things:
That the Omen King was born of the golden lineage, and that he was indeed the Lord of Leyndell.”

And Mohg’s says: “Mohg and Morgott are twin brothers, and their Great Runes are naturally similar.”

Melania’s rune says: “Malenia is daughter to Queen Marika and Radagon, and her Great Rune should have been the most sacred of all.”

If the demigod’s great runes are from the Elden ring originally, then why would the omen twins runes be called “naturally similar”? Why would it being like the Elden ring mean it’s from the golden lineage specifically?

And if she just claimed it why would Melania’s be most sacred because she is their children?

And why would Ranni have went and claimed a great rune, just to then cast it aside with her body? Also the shattering happens after the night of black knifes right? So then how would she have cast it aside with her body if she had already cast aside her body earlier?

It makes no sense for the great runes to have came from the Elden ring, at least none that I can make

Also the divine towers are a surely related question

But it does say the demigods had claimed shards of the Elden ring. So what were the shards?

Well that’s exceptionally obvious very early in the game, they’re rune arcs… the rune arc description says: “A shard of the shattered Elden Ring.
Grants the blessing of an equipped Great Rune upon use.
Even if no Great Rune is equipped, it will slightly increase maximum HP upon use.
The lower arc of the Elden Ring is held to be the basin in which its blessings pool. Perhaps this shard originates from that very arc.”

The rune arcs explicitly say they’re shards of the Elden ring, and they allow you the power of an equipped great rune. So it would’ve allowed the demigods the power of their runes. This also explains why nobody other than demigods(and Renalla) have great runes and could participate in the shattering

Similarly people assume the rune of death was part of the Elden ring originally, presumably due to the quote “The Golden Order was created by confining Destined Death. Thus, this new Order will be one of Death restored.”

But that’s not the only interpretation there. We know the gloamy eyed queen held the rune, and after her defeat by Maliketh he stole it and sealed it away, which pretty perfectly fits the “confining Destined Death” part.

And of course it would be hard to found an order when there’s an empyrean/their apostles running around slaying all of the other gods

                                                                              Much more speculative on runes:

“The flame of the fell god” incantation say that: “The fell god still lurks within the Fire Giants”

The “burn o flame” incantation say that: “The Fire Giants borrowed from the power of a fell god, and still they were defeated.”

And of course the “one eyed shield; say that: “Tricksome shield made from white stone depicting a malformed one-eyed god. The barrel of a firearm pokes through the open mouth.
Once worshipped by the giants, this evil deity is believed to have been slain by Queen Marika.”

And when you fight actually a fire giant as a boss, it burns up its leg, and then the face in its abdomen opens up and revealing an eye, a single eye that’s iris is an orange colored combination of 8 rings that are swirling and seemingly burning

The giants prayer book similarly depicts a swirling blazing circle. Kinda like how the “golden order principia” has a symbol alike to the Elden ring

So my idea is that the blazing iris of the one eyed god is it’s rune analogous to The Elden ring inside Marika. It is wildly speculative however unless I’ve missed anything to make it solider

Also interestingly the red braid whip says: “Every giant is red of hair, and Radagon was said to have despised his own red locks. Perhaps that was a curse of their kind.”

Radahn’s redmane helmet says the: “Helm of the golden lion, with flowing red hair.
Worn by General Radahn.
Radahn inheirted the furious, flaming red hair of his father Radagon, and is fond of its heroic impications.“

And also Radahn’s great rune is burning. Which’s just an interesting possible connection or coincidence there

Also also also the remembrance of the dragonlord states: “The Dragonlord whose seat lies at the heart of the storm beyond time is said to have been Elden Lord in the age before the Erdtree. Once his god was fled, the lord continued to await its return.”

And we know that Godfrey the “first Elden lord” was Marikas original lord and helped her establish the golden order and defeat practically everybody else, until she took his grace and sent him away to die

So seemingly this has to have been an entirely different god

And if you go to Maliketh’s arena and look at the walls there’s this giant symbol there, it looks much like the Elden ring, but if you look closely it’s quite significantly different

My idea is this might’ve been the rune of this god, their version of the Elden ring in this prior age before the erdtree

Of course this is also heavy speculation to my best knowledge

Please do comment your thoughts and prove me wrong if you’re able to.

                                                                              • Anonymous

Yooo folks, I think I figured out where Ranni's Great Rune is. It's with Gideon. When you get two GRs to Enia she mentions she's only ever seen two GRs at once one time, and then says she has as much faith in you as she does in Gideon. I think there's a connection there.

It would also explain why Gideon is so dismissive of Ranni's Great Rune, even though he's obsessed with the others to the point of slaughtering an entire village in the hopes to get Miquella's or Malenia's. It's because he already HAS it. The only hole with that theory is which OTHER Great Rune he has, though I think it must be Godwyn's.

Godwyn is the only demigod not mentioned to have a Great Rune, and at first it makes sense -- he died before the Elden Ring was shattered. BUT if you pay close attention, you'll realize... Rennala's Great Rune was also around before the Shattering. Radagon gave it to her when he left her for Marika, and that happened long before the Shattering happened. Possibly shortly after Godwyn's death. So there WERE Great Runes around then. It also lines up with Gideon's personality, there's no way the AH would willingly fight a demigod on his own, so picking a discarded Great Rune and another whose owner is dead fits. It also has the benefit of placating my OCD, because it cannot accept Godwyn not having a Great Rune.

                                                                                • Anonymous

Interesting little thing that wouldn't effect normal gameplay at all but a lot of things seem to be tied directly to [Having] the great runes rather than just killing the shard-bearers, obviously that equals the same thing in a normal game but I was playing with the randomizer mod and didn't get a great-rune drop till the boss that replaced radahn had dropped one whereas by that point I had killed 'Rennala' (It was Mohg and Morgott) and 'Godrick' (It was malenia) and the person to trade in remembrances hadn't opened (I had a remembrance before I killed any bosses in the world because a chest had one in it) until the boss that replaced Radahn had died and dropped me a rune

As I said, wouldn't effect anyone in any normal sense of the game, just something interesting I thought I'd share since I found it neat that they didn't tie having the ability to go into the capital/trade remembrances to something like getting the site of grace in the arena, getting a boss remembrance, or clearing the boss out to put the game in the state of like "Hey this happened" and instead to having the unactivated rune itself, kinda neat and thought I'd share if anyone wanted it as a little "That's odd" and move on sorta thing

                                                                                  • Anonymous

Still wish that there was an option to enter the erdtree by collecting ALL great runes instead of setting the erdtree on fire, but there's probably a story-reason why thats not a thing :/

The ingame tutorial says that using a rune arc enhances the power of great runes even more, implying having them simply equipped would give any benefit already. That's pretty misleading but I wonder if it's a leftover from a time during development, where simply having a great rune equipped already gave any benefits.

                                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                                        • Anonymous

If, like me, you can't bear to use very rare items even when they'd help (what's the point in using a finite buff when, if you run out, you'll have to fight the boss unbuffed?) then equipping these are purely for roleplay. Which makes me wish they functioned as covenants, too... it would have been nice if equipping them granted extremely miniscule benefits, like the covenant rings of Dark Souls II or oath runes of Bloodborne, rather than just sitting in the top left corner looking pretty.

                                                                                          • Anonymous

Given the rarity of rune arcs in this game, especially early on, I've never found a situation where it felt worthwhile to use it. The buff you get is more complicated than humanity, human effigy and ember of previous games, and that only makes things worse as the scarcity of rune arcs makes me not want to try out the effects of the buff so I can get an idea of when I should use it. Humanity and embers were useable as powerful emergency healing items, and granted you the huge benefit of being able to summon aid into your world, but in this game the item you use for that is in great abundance.

These are indeed powerful buffs, but they're too broad and aren't strong enough to feel like they can give you the boost to get past a hard boss - and if you use one and stll fail, you have strikingly few chance to try again with the buff. I'd much rather try and learn the boss, or rethink my strategy, than gamble on a very limited resource which grants an unfamiliar bonus.

Given the importance placed upon these in the lore, and the way you equip it, I feel like this mechanic wasn't fully developed. I think they probably did plan for these runes to give you a smaller, permanent bonus, but ran out of time to properly test out the idea.

Side note - the multiplayer in this game sucks. You are only eligible for invasion when you have a friendly summon, or a rune arc active, and there is absolutely no reason to use a rune arc anywhere other than right in front of boss fog, if you use them at all. People only really summon right at the boss fog too, so invasions are completely unfair on both sides - if you're invading, you will run into ganks frequently, and if you're just trying to play through some areas with friends you will get spammed with invasions, as they have no one else to invade. On top of that, the matchmaking is incredibly poorly thought out. They've just taken a modified version of dark souls 3's matchmaking (which already wasn't great in that game, but worked reasonably well due to the relative linearity), and dropped it into an open world game where you can be anywhere in the world at any level, and can easily have very mismatched rune level and upgrade level due to most upgrade material being in dungeons separate from the main progression of the game.

                                                                                            • Anonymous

                                                                                              • Godrick's is the best general use rune for the majority of the game. Once you've hit all your build's major soft caps, it makes sense to switch to one of the more specific runes. They're not that good, though. I kinda wish they would have just used the Bloodborne system where you equip the runes and it's just a persistent effect. Having to acquire it, activate it at a location in the world, and then use a consumable every single time is hardly worth the effort.

                                                                                                • Anonymous

Sadly Elden Ring is a really rushed mess where QA was thrown out the window, leading to items not working as stated in the game, with no real way to solve it without heavily modifying the game.

"You can use a Rune Arc to give > even greater < benefits to your equipped great runes."

It would have been so much better to "attune" to a rune and gain a permanent power based on the demo god who wore them. It is supposed to be a big deal in the lore, making you much stronger.

                                                                                                                • Anonymous

They literally do nothing UNLESS you use rune arc.

Great Runes are supposed to be a huge deal. I mean..it's part of the shattered Elden Ring. But I don't play online. So Rune Arcs are really rare. Meaning anyone who plays offline (and even online) very rarely get a chance to actually use a great rune. I agree you shouldn't be able to use it whenever you want without restrictions, but needing a rare consumable item to activate it, then losing it when you die is a horrible way of doing it. It takes away nearly all the excitement of actually getting a Great Rune because I'll almost never be using them. Not to mention the fact that 90% of people will only use Godrick's anyways. I just feel like for something that is so central to the game and lore it should have been implemented better. Great Runes are basically the logo for Elden Ring.

                                                                                                                      • Anonymous

And considering how boring and uninteresting are most great runes, I just end using Godrick's great rune because those +5 lvl on every stat it's just too good, it allow you to use weapon or spells that you can't use without Godrick's rune.

This mechanic is terrible. Firstly you need to kill the shardbearer, then activate the rune, and then after each death spend a consumable to get value out of it? I hate it. Just let me permanently have it activated after the first two steps, especially given how minimally impactful the runes even are. Godrick's is MAYBE a bit strong if you get it early, but the rest of them are much deeper into the game by that point and its well deserved.

Malenias actually stands out to me as being GREAT for attrition boss fights...which I can see becoming a grim reality for some builds in a significantly more difficult iteration of the game...
