Greataxe is the standard Greataxe in Elden Ring. The Greataxe scales primarily with Strength and is a good Weapon for heavy hitting strength focused builds who want to deal devastating knockdown damage. 

 

Greataxe akin to a huge lump of iron. Recognized as the weapon of choice of badland chieftains.
Too heavy to be wielded by those of merely ordinary strength, blows from this axe will flatten enemies, and the force of its charged attack is a sight to behold.

  • Weapon Skill: Barbaric Roar
  • This weapon can be infused and buffed
  • Greataxe can be upgraded by using Smithing Stones
  • Barbaric Roar increases AR by 10% and changes Heavy Attack into a 3 hit Combo
  • The Greataxe notably has the highest base damage/damage per swing among the great weapon class (for builds with ≤80 STR). Charged heavy attacks cause enormous damage per swing, especially when using the Axe Talisman and Spiked Cracked Tear. The damage comes at the cost of slightly lower attack speed, making chained attacks more difficult than great swords/maces. This weapon can be rather effective against large, slow enemies with high HP. 
  • Can be equipped with only 20 Strength if two-handed.
  • NOTE: As of Patch 1.09, the scaling values of this weapon were changed. Please refer to the Upgrades Table of this weapon below. Additionally, speed, range, recovery time and guard counter speed of Greataxe weapons has increased.

FAQ: Is the Great Axe good in Elden Ring?

  • The Greataxe is the most classic standard one amongst the others in its class. It is good for those pursing a Strength build early game since in can be obtained early and has a Strength requirement of 30. This is complemented with the Barbaric Roar Skill that only boosts Strength scaling further and increase damage output.

      While range is lacking this lump of steel hits hard. Axe Talisman with Charge Tier makes your relatively fast charge R2s while stacking Stagger. Jump R2s also hit real hard and are useful on faster enemies.

      Roars are a mixed bag: War Cry charged R2s can hit in the 2.5-3k range and the charge adds some much needed range, but the tracking really struggles on faster late game bosses and even with Erdtree Favor +2 and 50+ End it absolutely devours stamina. Barbarian Roar can do similar damage for less stamina but a miss is life ruining, and you can't cancel the combo.

      Overall this humble axe can see you from Limgrave to Elden Beast with the right build but be wary using roars.

        Charged attack is actually one of the fastest charged attack that I've seen for a large weapon. I mostly use greathammer and colossal and this thing is quick on charge compared to those

          This is a really enjoyable weapon to use. I've just beaten Morgott with it and have used it all game. Fused with Cragblade and cold, jumping and charged heavies it is a staggernaught of a weapon. Not only that but the 2hR1 is great follow up to keep enemies flinching. Stamina is killer tho.
          As an aside I use the Pickaxe for a piercing damage alternative and its moveset is similar so you don't have to change your approach too much except it's strange 2hR2 which I wasn't expecting.

            oh man ive been missing out, this weapon is ridiculous considering the amount of things you can do with it. right now im running a build that at +17 with no buffs besides the physick, can deal 2000 damage on a single charged heavy.

                  This + full Godrick Knight Set for the axe-themed heraldry and strangely matching colors + Gilded Greatshield on a pure STR build is unbelievably sexy.

                    pair this with the highland axe in your off hand, equip axe talisman, roar medallion, war cry, drink your buff pot and just push R2, i'm pretty sure that when you hit someone with that, is strong enough to even delete the datafile of that character

                        In a weapons tier, i would place this thing in a solid B tier.
                        it is definitely not the best strength weapon you can find in weapons, and has some downside as the limited range, big stamina usage and sometimes imprecise compared to all the other heavy weapons.

                        But if you can get over these downside, this thing does it's job with dignity.
                        Great strength weapon for early game areas, this axe will carry you in every activities Limgrave and Weeping Peninsula have to offer due the impressive damage already at +3.
                        It isn't as good as great hammers, but this thing can decently break through enemies stace, especially if you can land 2 charged heavy attacks during fights.

                        Again, a good Strength build weapons to use in the first regions in game, ditch it for the Graveyard Executioner Great Axe as soon as you reach Liurnia if you like this class of weapons, as it is a straight upgrade.

                          Does the downward swing on the two-handed R1 deal headshot damage to humanoid enemies? It comes down squarely on most enemies heads.

                            It's not the lightest. It's not the strongest. It's not the longest. It doesn't have the lowest requirements, it doesn't cost the least stamina to swing, it doesn't have innate bleed or bonus crit. It doesn't do pierce damage to abuse spear talisman. It doesn't have swoopy R2s. But, I love it.

                              Sometimes the notes and tips on these pages feel like they need more clarification or context. "Barbaric roar increases damage by 10%" , is that a typo or a specific feature of this axe, since on the ash of war page it states
                              something like 7%? Also some of the wording implies that this specific axe deals increased charged attack damage, but I don't know if they're just talking about the entire great axe weapon class or not.

                                As soon as I found this weapon, I used it throughout the entire game. It’s dependable, sturdy, and it’s jumping attacks ALWAYS break poise. It can be a challenge in PVP, but honestly, what big-windup weapon isn’t? I even beat the final boss with it after a quick flame art infusion. 10/10 weapon.

                                    Why does a weapon you get early in your playthrough have a STR requirement of 30? I can't remember what mine was when I got the axe but I know I didn't meet them because I put it in the storage chest from the grace menu and I forgot about it and by the time I had enough STR I'd found better weapons then anyway.

                                        Wish this had the Crit multiplier of Executioner’s Greataxe. As of now, it seems just strictly inferior with the lack of range. It’s little brother Highland Axe has a 110 Crit. Shame, because this is the most fashion greataxe. Still, it’s not a bad choice. And accessible from the start.

                                          At 60 str heavy infusion, this has 681 AR and Executioner's greataxe has 673 AR. At 99 str it has 773 AR and Executioner's greataxe has 770AR. At 60 str longhaft axe has 672 AR so i don't really know why anyone would choose this Greataxe ove Longhaft and Executioner's greataxe just because it has like 8 or 9 more damage in AR than the other two but hey, to each his own I guess.

                                                Occult Greataxe does not seem to have the same unusual affinity that Hollow Greataxe had in DS3. While I like the new design, it does feel that I've lost an old friend.

                                                  Didn't have 110 crit previously? Why nerf an already underused weapon? It has no range compared to other two-handed weapons. The extra crit damage was the only thing making it worthwhile, at least to me...

                                                      no longer has moveset from previous Souls games. in particular the lack of the roll ground smash is a bummer, making it inferior to other str weapons.

                                                        Did a lot of work and it turns out this is the best great axe for str builds in terms of AR. Followed closely by the longshaft axe and then the executioner’s great axe.

                                                          One of the early game Str. options, AKA "The Great Trio". Can be acquired in mere minutes upon receiving Torrent provided you have a way to deal with one of the Trolls.

                                                          Compared to the Great Club it has higher raw damage while having slightly more weight, although it's not as damaging (nor as heavy at about half the weight) as the Greatsword. However, it requires more Str. to use even two handed than the Great Club, and it has inferior scaling and range compared to the two others. In addition some enemies (Like the Miners) are very resilient to Standard damage, and it doesn't have Strike or Piercing options.

                                                          My least favorite out of the early game "Greats", but it can certainly crush things plenty well.

                                                              If you stun a giant, but not kill it, and then try to open the chest, it'll be empty. Either reload the map or restart the game and the weapon will be accessible again.

                                                              I was already seething thinking From transferred this weapon to Lyndell or something similar with patch 1.0.3. Bamboozled.

                                                                Signature STR build weapon throughout the series. Pick Hero, after getting torrent rush to Gael Fort and get +5strength talisman. You can now use this monster with two-hands, while free to level that much needed Vigor.

                                                                  I think this one has better base damage, maybe it's better early levels, but Executioners is better around +20'ish with good Str?

                                                                    There is literally no reason to use this weapon instead of the Executioner's Greataxe besides not wanting to farm for it, Executioner's Greataxe has better scaling, more range, more damage, and a crit modifier. Other than it being easier to get, I guess the normal Greataxe is also slightly lighter? The Greataxe should be training wheels until the Executioner's Greataxe is finally obtained for any player interested in using Great Axe weapons

                                                                      I was thinking potentially this weapon could be stronger with a quality build instead of going heavy. B is a fine scaling but purely from my darksouls knowledge a C, C scaling is much better

                                                                            Are Greataxes parryable in Elden Ring...? An Npc apparently parried my 2 handed r1... I'm almost entirely sure I wasn't running...

                                                                              You don’t need to kill the trolls in order to loot the chest in the back of the carriage, just attack one of them once and they’ll stop and you can run around back and grab the greataxe.

                                                                                  When kiting one of the trolls, it wrecked the carriage. Saw the item briefly as both it and the carriage despawned. Anyone know if it respawns? Haven't seen it again...
