Summons five greatshield soldier spirits
|
Greatshield Soldier Ashes is a Spirit and Summon in Elden Ring. Greatshield Soldier Ashes allows players to summon the aid of five greatshield soldier spirits.
Ashen remains in which spirits yet dwell.
Use to summon five greatshield soldier spirits.
Spirits of greatshield soldiers who belonged to the Fallen Hawks, a band of soldiers that once explored the Eternal City. Stout defenders with a steady guard.
Though their methods are somewhat crude, they work well as a squadron, and will attract the attention of enemies or lob ghostflame from the rearguard.

- Consumes Medium FP (74)
- You must be near a rebirth monument to summon spirits from ashes.
- When you are close to a rebirth monument and able to summon, a monument icon will appear on the left side of the screen.
- This spirit tends to fare very well in combat as a defensive unit. They constantly take shelter behind their greatshields, using shield bashes to keep them safe while staggering their target, only dropping their guard to either let out a war cry to draw enemy attention or to throw a Frost inducing pot of ghost fire at their target. Their main weakness are foes that have a way to bypass their greatshields, such as the downward sword swing of a Troll which strikes from above or the ring of flames from a Black Flame Ritual attack cast by the Godskin Noble that damages from below.

These things are so badass I finished the whole game with them.

My controller died in the middle of a boss fight and these guys were so tanky that they were able to draw aggro and eat the damage long enough for me to fumble around and find replacements. Definitely would recommend

Convinced that these dudes with Lance+Spectral Lance wreck everything.
- Anonymous
So I am having problems finding them in the 1.00 patch seems to be a no-go. Which patch were they added? Because on my patch they are no where to be found. Any help is appreciated
- Anonymous
I was playing around using the boys earlier and their AI is the best of any I've seen in this game, they actually surround you in response to an enemies ranged attack and create a phalanx to block projectiles
- Anonymous
As noted in multiple comments below, these guys will save your butt throughout an RL1 run. Will consistently draw aggro while you can spam spells or AoWs from behind. Get them to +10 ASAP and they will make lots of bosses manageable. Buff them with Golden Vow and Blessings Boon and they have lots of survivability. Radagon can still be a struggle as he has multiple attacks that will hit from below. Bonus is you have enough FP to summon them with the base 10 Mind without having to use the Cerulean bubble tear.

These have got me all the way through to Farum Azula, they were a massive help with the fire giant. Meaty and wide range attacks make them excellent, I am close to leveling them to 10.

These guys were a big help beating mohg at rlvl 1, they hold aggro well and help deal stance damage with their bashes as well as their ranged attacked helping pull enemies to them, between these guys and gargoyles greatsword wa managed to stance break him 3x, finished him off on the third one, originally just used these guys because they had low enough for cost that I could use them at lvl 1 with 10 mind but would def recommend these guys more after using them a bit on some harder bosses, they pretty much stucklocked commander niall for me as well again allowing for a lvl 1 victory on the second attempt with them
- Anonymous
If you can buff them with golden vow and a blessing definitely do, they last noticably longer
- Anonymous
Just beat commander niall at rlvl 1 thanks to these guys, they took literally ALL of the aggro from him so all I had to do was take out the dual wielding knight and blast away at niall with corpsewax cutter until it was over, I am shocked at how easy that was after trying different strategies to beat him at lvl 1, great shield summons ftw!

These guys absolutely ruin the day of anything that doesn't have a lot of powerful aoe attacks.
- Anonymous
Super underrated ashes. Basically a squad of automatic damage sponge troopers with godlike stagger and exen lobbed projectiles. Black Knife Edgegod and Mimic Tear got nothing on them and the Mausoleum Soldiers.

guys you don't have to complain elden ring literally has an easy mode look

Summon these guys against crystallians and you can just go make dinner
- Anonymous
Amazing ashes against most things, but pretty weak against a lot of AOEs, which most late bosses have. Still, they will always be the best boys in my heart.
- Anonymous
These guys are good. I couldn't get any summons to help me with Maliketh, and I was dying in 2 hits all the time, but the first time I tried these dudes, we took care of business.
- Anonymous
Summoned them for Loretta at The tree. She cannot get any spell casted. Over power.
- Anonymous
These boys really helped my ass when i was fighting Mohg, they do a very good job of distracting him and tanking him so i could quickly bring his first phase down, once Mohg gets to phase two though he swatted them aside like Sauron, but their help combined with rotten breath really helped in finally bringing him down.

I need to nab these guys on my Faith builds. I can't stop thinking about how much they'd benefit from Blessing's Boon / Blessing of the Erd Tree.
- Anonymous
Love these smol gremlin bois tanking and bonking everything with their shields, lovable little scamps.
- Anonymous
These things kick ass against slow bosses. Surround and stun, until it is done.

My go to summon for any fight that isn't cheesy. If you buff them they can tank bosses like Mogh with ease. Unless the boss is mobile then all 5 will tend to surround and just chain slam bosses/mobs. They hold aggro with a roar, fire bombs, their melee and shield bashes. One of these guys ate the entire melee attack chain of Godfrey and Radahn with little problem on NG+1. If you want to level as a support/healer I would suggest getting this ASAP, they hold aggro so well you can watch for AoE but other than that you can stand next to them as they handle the content, healing as needed.

always use on dungeon boss.
My glass cannon feel safe and sound.
need more faith for golden vow.

I was testing this in different areas and would like to add that buffing these guy with Commanders Stranded turns them and the demi-humans into absolute monsters add on that the Demi's become frenzied at night and very few bosses can do anything but get repeatedly stunned.
These guys are the best, except for Radagon. Then they are the worst lol

If you’re a ranged build (such as a mage) these are your god tier summon. All a ranged build really needs is aggro control, to keep enemies off of them while they do damage from afar. Need the enemy to stay distracted while you put down terra magica, gulp down a wondrous physick and other buffs then blast them with your kamehameh- sorry, comet azur? These are your guys. They literally bang on their shields to draw aggro, and will tank the **** out of basically anything.
And there are 5 of them, which makes them the ultimate anti-gank summon as well. Having trouble with a boss because it’s a group? Godskin duo? Valiant gargoyles? Crystalian trio? Etc? No problem. These guys will outnumber all of them, and draw aggro from all of them too, letting you focus them down one by one at your leisure.
Despite this I rarely use them, ironically because it’s… kinda boring. I use them for anti-gank (looking at you, triple crystalians) but otherwise if it’s just me and one or two opponents then I still prefer Lhutel or Tiche or mimic, depending. Those summons are just more fun/interesting to play with. But if you just want to min-max and go purely for what’s most effective? These guys. Best summon in the game, easy, outside of highly situational fights like Rykard for example, for whom a mimic with a serpent hunter will always be your best bet.

It's hillarious seeing these little skelly boys stun-lock every boss, and very tanky too.
- Anonymous
why is nobody talking about the berserk reference in the description: Spirits of greatshield soldiers who belonged to the Fallen Hawks, a band of soldiers that once explored the Eternal City.
- Anonymous
Easy to get once you kill Radahn and explore the upper half of Nokron. Probably the best summons in the game against anything that doesn't do massive AoE attacks... and it's a "normal" summon so it's easy to upgrade.
- Anonymous
They kind of look like Let Me Solo Her but there are five of them. With shields. Great for crowd control or ganging up on some fast moving doofus and slowing him down.
- Anonymous
The Irony is that these guys at +10 can take our the Deathblight Field boss and his two adds in Farum Azula that guard the Grave Glovewart pickers bell #3. So, congratz, you can now upgrade all the other ashes only to find out these guys were the best.

Whenever I summon these riot shield dudes while entering a boss room, I say, “FBI OPEN UP!”

Easily one of the best ashes, these guys tank the fucc out of everything and anything 24/7
- Anonymous

At +3 they cornered and stunlocked to death Sanguined Noble. I was able to stand there just watching them go. They look adorable too, banging those greatshields while totally naked except for the helmets. You're pretty good mah boys.

Best summons in the game by far. Killed Godfrey and Maliketh with them first try. If you use them with a plus 25 shield with carian retaliation and wraith calling bell they keep aggro the entire time.
PS: you have to upgrade them +10 they are amazing if you do also tanked all of Godfreys and malikeths hits
- Anonymous
These guys will gangbang bosses to death if they get them in a corner lmao
sounds a lot more difficult than it is too..
pretty much these guys break almost break elden ring by themselves..

These are my boys. They can be shredded by a nasty AoE attack like dragonfire, but they will stun lock many humanoids into oblivion.
- Anonymous
One shotted malenia with these, they literally had her surrounded in a corner the first phase
- Anonymous
Lots of good suggestions here to pair this with a caster build to serve as a defensive frontline; but I'd even go as far as to say if you just value your spirit's ability to survive and hold aggro over their combat ability, then these guys are one of the best ashes in the game.
It's immensely helpful especially in duo bossfights since they can very consistently distract one while you bonk another.
Bonus: you can buff them and heal them for even more gank squad shenanigans.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
I freaking love the gank squad. Hilarious and extremely underrated. They’ll keep bosses busy while you chuck ranged attacks at them. I use them for almost everything now.

One if not the best summons for a mage character, literally tanks the living **** out of anything at max upgrade.
As a mage you can shoot spells at the back while these guys tanks the aggro and attacks at the frontline, making your life as a mage easier.
- Anonymous
Best summon in the game for RL1 run without upgrading anything. They are still tanky enough to provide enough meat for bosses with mostly physical damage and are the only mob to completely take on boss aggro allowing me to use all dot/buffs necessary to take them down. Big respect skelly guys
Gosh I always thought they would be amazing Summons for my Mage Wizard Character - However I somehow never tried them! I wish I read this sooner. I figured they don't aggro at all...
I wish we could Summon more freely...
- Anonymous
If you're any type of pure spellcasting build,, these guys at +9 will literally just tank anything for you and give you plenty of time to pull off any combos. It's most likely going to be the only ashes you'll ever need.
Best defensive spellcasting summon by far, and unless you're looking to deal more damage there's no point going with the Mimic Ashes in most fights.
- Anonymous
Tested out every single Spirit, and these guys impressed me from the start. Now boosted, great choice, they are a wall in front of bosses, obviously not against flying enemies, but everything has limitations.
- Anonymous
These guys, along with my meteorite staff and rock sling spell, were great against Commander Niall.
- Anonymous
These are great if you need a summon that won't drop aggro.
- Anonymous
Glad to see the other comments agree that I made the right call upgrading these, they always helped a ton when I summoned them (except for Malenia lol). My 5 lil shieldbros
- Anonymous
Was running pure faith build with multiple buffs, these guys dont die even to AOEs with golden vow and greater blessing/heals. (plus consumable perfume shield for good measure)
- Anonymous
Don't summon these against Malenia. They won't die but she will also be at full health all the time
Used these against a bloodhound knight. Its attacks bounce off their greatshields, so it just kept staggering itself. Completely trivialized the fight.
Also fun to watch them bully the crystal enemies.
- Anonymous
I tried a "summon and buff allies" build on these guys and it works really well. They dont really do damage but they dont die either so you can pelt the boss with ranged attacks from behind. Quite fun IMO
- Anonymous
These dudes are funny as hell, and if you're playing with summons I highly recommend them. The shields are great, but there's a lot of beauty in these bois dumping bombs on dudes 3x their size
- Anonymous
I just wrote a long review of banished knight oleg and how awesome he is but man, these dudes are just spectacular as well. They hold aggro like crazy and are tanky as all hell as ling as you don’t fight enemies with big ground aoe dots (things they can’t block, magma for example)

probably the most underrated ash 8ng game right now.
It's my nr2 right after mimic ofc.
As comments already point out they suck against aoe spell damage or against melenia heals ofc.
However, every other boss is surrounded and ganked aand stun-locked to death.
Also they were even more powerful pre 1.03 cause I somehow think damage and hp of spirit ashes was nerfed in general in 1.03,at least that's how it feels like...
- Anonymous
Just raised it to +9, can even tank the most disgusting Putrid Tree Spirit with ROT AOE, and eat Ulcerated Tree Spirit alive. The aggro they made the bosses barely paying my Gransax Bolt attention. (It really hurts)
These guys are pretty good overall but really bad Vs dragons or any other boss with an AOE which is most of the later on in the game. Destined to be a mid tier summon because they aren't tanky themselves the shield is.
- Anonymous
Literrally the most BM summon ive used so far. 5 dudes with greatshields smacking any enemy they come across. They usually end up surrounding the enemy and ganking them. Im clearing some forgotten about bosses and these guys at +8 can handle a boss on their own
- Anonymous
Despite being pretty good, the rune requirement to upgrade them is pretty little which make me wonder at what dictate the price of rune upgrade for these spirit?
- Anonymous
using this to kill wormface and they just running around to kill tree guardian first and come help me with the giant wormface. what a bro.
- Anonymous
lol 5 guys is good for once, and i dont mean the burger place
- Anonymous
+6 onwards this ashes can even tank Margot Omen King long enough even after phase 2 massive AOE, for me to keep Gransax bolt him to death.
- Anonymous
These are absolute godly ashes if you're running a glass cannon int build, they just don't die at +9/+10
- Anonymous
Best summons for pure INT players 99% of the time. They surround and hold the boss in one place while you infinite kamehamehaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
- Anonymous
As someone who enjoys playing Glass Canon Sorcerer and dies in 2 - 1 hits, summons like these are a must
- Anonymous
These are S tier summons no exaggeration. They are super tanks at level 10 and there's 5 of them and if you're a faith user with healing, you can easily keep these guys alive.
AKA shieldbros. You gain FIVE summons of guys who almost always have their shield up, so they get reduced damage, and are great at drawing aggro to themselves. They won't be dealing a whole lot of damage, and a select few bosses can quickly wipe them out, but 90% of the time these have become my go-tos. There's something kinda hilarious about watching a boss get boxed in by these guys. Obvious con to them is low damage output, but that's what you're there for.
- Anonymous
So these guys just replaced my mimic tear as #1 boss killing helpers. Juice them up with a little blessing boon and they are like an squad of energizer bunnies. They keep going and going...

Send and single enemy ogre sized and smaller to shield jail XD
Trivialized the fell twins fight (not that it was hard to begin with) they encircled them and I was free wail on them with impunity haha
- Anonymous
Literally the best ashes in the game. I have them at +10, give the whole group Golden Vow once they're summoned, then just let em go to town while I sit back and pew pew with magic.
- Anonymous
I like to imagine the shield boys as Scottish and angry; often times yelling random nonsense at bosses.
- Anonymous
Tanky bois and there are 5 of them. One of the best distraction spirits for boss fights.
