Greatsword of Damnation is a Greatsword in Elden Ring. It was added with the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. The Greatsword of Damnation scales primarily with Strength, Dexterity and Faith and is a good Weapon for for Faith players that are looking for a Greatsword. This weapon has high physical and holy damage and comes with the Golden Crux that allows you to do a leaping attack.
Golden greatsword that once pierced the body of Midra, master of the manse. Used by the hornsent in the execution of a damnation like no other.
The barbs that pierce the victim from within wind gently around the blade.
Where to Find Greatsword of Damnation in Elden Ring
The Greatsword of Damnation weapon can be found at the following location:
- Trade Midra, Lord Of Frenzied Flame's Remembrance with Enia at Roundtable Hold.
Elden Ring Greatsword of Damnation Notes & Tips
- Weapon Skill: Golden Crux
- Leap up and skewer foe from overhead. If successful, the weapon's barbs unfold to excruciate from within; else, additional input releases barbs in the area.
- This weapon cannot be infused with Ashes of War
- Can't be buffed by Magic or Consumables
- The Greatsword of Damnation can be upgraded by using Somber Smithing Stones.
- This weapon shares the same R2 thrust attacks with the Claymore.
- The initial hit of Golden Crux counts as a critical hit. Therefore it can be boosted by the Dagger Talisman if the initial hit lands on a human-type enemy. This also allows for the Blade of Mercy, Assassin's Crimson Dagger and Assassin's Cerulean Dagger to work as well.

If you get caught with this AOW you are bad. Literally just take one step to the left, or right, or back, or maybe even forward
- Anonymous
Kinda strange how this greatsword gets given the claymore poke R2 when midra himself spins that **** around like a beyblade.
- Anonymous
really annoying to get caught by this in pvp while in the middle of a roll because of latency. i've never survived this ash of war, probably because its only used by password summons
- Anonymous
The madness of this sword comes from getting grab by it in PvP, or someone dodges it and backstab you.

You complaining because you don’t understand the lore… what is madness what is holy …. What caused the flame of madness … do you not need faith.. the boss literally turns to madness in front of you … he is holy …… if you save Melina you become the lord of madness end game… you were faith you were holy….. madness flame comes from faith …. Faith is holy … weapon makes sense . Madness damage from boss not weapon… holy weapon from before madness.

I feel like it should be pretty clear to people that this is actually not a "madness sword" in lore and in game. It was a device of mutilation belonging to the Hornsent Inquisitors, NOT Midra or his followers. Midra basically just uses it as a catalyst for his regular frenzy **** in the fight, and now that he's dead, there is absolutely no logical reason for it to still contain some part of the flame of frenzy, given that it was literally Designed To Stop It. The whole concept of him using it in the fight was to show his power over the flame, using what was designed as a tool of suppression to divine his chaotic power through. I know it's annoying that you don't get the madness sword but there was no universe in which that made sense

Why does Fromsoft hate Frenzy users? Also, why does EVERY LATEGAME WEAPON HAVE HOLY DAMAGE REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
i use this to punish players who fight unfairly
don't heal while i have this equipped, or i will make it so you never even healed in the first place
- Anonymous
They need to update this to allow for more punishment if you fail the AoW. The fact that people can spam this to death with no punishment frames is ridiculous. The amount of players I've fought who killed me with spamming it need to learn how to not lose and actually git gud the right way.

Me: Cool! I got Midra's weapon! Now I can be a Madness Main!
*Looks inside*
- Doesn't have Madness build up.
- Does Holy damage instead of Fire.
- A lot of thorns coiled around tge toothpick, but deals Regular Damage instead of Strike.
- Weapon Skill grabs enemies even if they roll.
- CDD scaling.
- Doesn't have that much of a damage.
Me: !?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
*Gets Frenzy illness in real life*
- Anonymous
So let me get this straight. This late-game weapon doesn't even outperform the Sacred-infused Claymore that it shares its moveset with? And the Ash of War is useless in PvE? No madness? It hardly captures the most memorable characteristics of the Midra boss fight? Alright, just checking. I still love it.
- Anonymous
I think this would be scarier if people just spammed the strong attack over the grab tbh
- Anonymous
Me watching the host spam waterfowl dance for the 10th time expecting me not to use the grab attack after he is done.
- Anonymous
In the right hands this thing is cracked for pvp. If you learn the million ways to punish people with its AoW you’re pretty unstoppable.
- Anonymous
Me: Wow! I got the weapon of Midra! Now I can be a Frenzy Main!
*Looks inside*
- Twisted thorns that deal REGULAR DAMAGE, even if they are dull
- NO FRENZY
- HOLY DAMAGE, not Fire Damage
- Weapon skill that GETS THE ENEMIES EVEN IF THEY ROLL
- Not long
- Claymore movement
- No Midra set available
Me: !?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!???
- Anonymous
"this thing sucks", "why is this holy damage" "the aow sucks" "where's the frenzy"
yeah but have you ever fought gideon in high ng cycles? he will **** your **** up. did you know the ash of war counts as a critical attack? notably something you can heavily boost the damage of with strong multiplicative effects. melee gideon is either stunlock or die. this thing will put him in a crit loop until you run out of stam... I love frenzy, I love midra, I didn't love this weapon at first, but as it stands this is my go to gideon killer for rushing through ng cycles with.
The AOW is great if you can convince the enemy to stand still for 5 seconds
- Anonymous
It’s like they took everything cool from Midra’s weapon and removed it
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
whoever made this standard damage type should just be run over at this point
- Anonymous
This thing is so bugged, even if you get hit by the opposing player and if you land the AoW on low health, this thing will still kill off the player before you die off. I wish I BS-ing you all.
- Anonymous
A weapon, that is a big toothpick, coiled by throns that has no sharp edges on the sides, and is somewhat dull = Standard Damage on normal swings.
...Miyazaki, I think we should have a serious talk in my Director Room
- Anonymous
Vow of Indomitable seems to counter the grab attacks easily.
You will end up giving a window for them to follow up, so if you saw the enemy flying, you can IMMEDIATELY use Vow to get rid of the grab and still being able to retaliate or dodge the follow up.
Or use another Vow again, so once they are finished, you can still retaliate, since it gets a while for them to move, cause they are ellegantly taking the sword from the ground and showing off it to the side
- Anonymous
No patch notes will be able to fix latency between players, wich is the thing that affects golden crux the most. The only way to reduce latency to reasonable levels is to only involve 2 players in the online instance, wich means one invader and a host without phantoms in invasions/duels or 2 duelists in colosseums.
In the case of invasions, invaders by design cannot enter a world without summons, and no host is ever gonna fight on its own, so this weapon is inherently more powerful in such instances.
- Anonymous
Best counter to this is the GS of Solitude.
You can out trade them, then bait the grab attack and use the projectile to finish them off.
- Anonymous
thought about a fix for its godawful moveset and properties: make it deal fire damage on top of holy damage, give it light gs r1s and hts running r2s plus feint, up fth scaling to b, lower str scaling to d (lower requirement to 15), increase guard boost to ~45 and make the barbs around the blade extend forward when charged if you're going to give it claymore r2s
virgins use this for ash of war spam in pvp, chads use it for charged heavy builds in pve.
- Anonymous
Only useful against enemies with an IQ below 50, i.e. NPCs and Magic users
- Anonymous
most op weapon for pvp, it can literally 1 shot u when u use the weapon art

It looks so cool especially the barbs coming up from the ground. Is it good for pve? Thinking on using it with 50 str and 35 faith as of rn......

Do you guys think that this is a valid weapon for a frenzy-themed build? I'm considering using this weapon in my frenzy build, but I am unsure if I should/if it would fit. On one hand, the description and lore state that this is a weapon used by the hornsent to incapacitate those trying to become the LOTF. On the other hand, Midra, Lord of the frenzied flame himself, wields this weapon in his boss fight.
What do you guys think? Valid or not?
- Anonymous
This weapon should’ve been available in two forms. This as it’s holy original and a corrupted frenzy variant. Or at the very least I wish the dlc introduced frenzied grease so I’m not pigeon holed into using vykes spear for a madness build. Madding hands are alright I suppose..
- Anonymous
Its called the flame of frenzy right, so why HOLY? Furthermore, why no MADNESS buildup when we use it, but he does?!
- Anonymous
sad that we didn't get a pair weapon, instead of just a greatsword. would be sick if they brought back Farron Greatsword-like weapon, since Midra uses part of the sword as dagger also in his fight.
- Anonymous
Personally, I wish fully charging the heavy would expand the barbs like Midra does.
Really just more weapons with that kind of flair. Smithscript lobbing, the ice needle bullet and the astel sword waves are all cool but I crave more Ruins Greatsword-like smashes.
- Anonymous
Hey… wanna hear a true statement that you dont wanna hear because you’rr too busy complaining?
This shouldn’t do madness buildup. Why? Because unless he’s using it as a catalyst for his flame swings, IT DOESNT HAVE MADNESS BUILDUP WHEN THE BOSS USES IT.
- Anonymous
Not even a crutch. You got storm blade spammers out here doing 1400 per hit, scattershot throw bleed spammers doing degenerate stuff, and moonveil bull-goat gankers galore. Most i’ve ever gotten in pvp is 1600 damage with golden vow, howl, alexander shard, and dagger talisman. It’s easy to dodge unless you play on mcdonalds wifi, (which i dont,) and honestly fun to use. The ash is extremely punishable on a miss (because it has a GIANT delay in between main ash and follow up) and if you dont feel like risking it, the follow up is very avoidable too. Same people who say golden crutch are spamming scattershot throw mindlessly istg. Get good.
The only real complaint i’ve heard is that it forces both parties in a fight to play passively. I get that. I get why you don’t like that. Thank you for making a real complaint.
- Anonymous
What's the latest consensus on this weapon for PvP? Do people still find it ultra cringe?
- Anonymous
People don't level ADP and complain about it's AoW (GIVE ME THE HATE YOU ONLY ELDEN RING PLAYER).
- Anonymous
You know this is coming from a PvP guy, yeah the grab is funny and stuff but I really wish the Ash of war was that frenzy sword slashes that midra does.
- Anonymous
I wish we got the broken piece of the weapon midra uses in his other hand as a dagger instead of the garbage incantation and I think it would would have been cool if it was a light greatsword and there were two versions of this weapon, like the soul of artorias where one weapon is the regular version and the other is the cursed or in this case frenzied variant with madness buildup and frenzied flame burn marks like vykes spear and midras attack that looks like wave of gold but with frenzy as the skill instead of the grab attack
- Anonymous
This is hands down the most satisfying weapon to use in Leda and friends fight.
I am not even trying to win the battle.
- Anonymous
Miyazaki really said "You know what Elden Ring needs? ANOTHER somber faith greatsword."
- Anonymous
Dagger Talisman, Sacred Scorpion Charm, Shard of Alexander, Golden Vow, Howl of Shabriri, whole Rakshasa set and one-shot everyone from 99 vig with the AoW.
- Anonymous
I wish the R2s were the poke into transform attack that Midra does.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
The AoW on this thing absolutely destroys Horned Warriors at around 50 Faith. I can't really explain it, but there is something just so satisfying about leaping into the air and piercing this sword right into the top of an enemy's head.
- Anonymous
I sure do love being grabbed from 5 feet away by someone with ping measured in seconds, then losing 90% of my health at 60 vigor. Truly balanced
- Anonymous
I’m having a weird bug with this weapon, after I do the jumping attack with it, it no longer lets me do the explosion attack with r2. Is anyone else experiencing this?
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
The worse your net is the better this weapon gets.Grab your opponent through i-frames by pressing L2. This weapon represents ER and so well.
- Anonymous
Ah. I knew you'd come. To stand before the Elden Ring. To become Elden Lord. What a sad state of affairs. I commend your spirit, but alas -- none sh-AAAAAAAHHHH!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! OOOOOHHHH GOD OHHH GOD NOOO!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Anonymous
Even with str soft cap, shard of Alexander and dagger talisman this thing still doesn’t one shot. Meanwhile a loin claw from a Greatsword cab one shot someone with 60 vigor. Yet you hear no one complaining about Greatsword.
- Anonymous
Oh poor Gideon is NOT gonna love what I have in store for him.
- Anonymous
So it's regular gold instead of unalloyed, like Miquella's Needle, which is why it needs to be this big to seal a lesser Lord of Frenzied Flame.
- Anonymous
This thing should've dealt Strike/pierce. It doesn't have a blade.
- Anonymous
The weapon from the rememberance of MIDRA, LORD OF FRENZIED FLAME, has no fire damage nor madness. That's some ds2 bullsht.
- Anonymous
Personally I haven't really had any issues with the thing in PVP. Players barely hit me with the AoW and if they do yeah it does a lot of damage but it hasn't one shot me yet. Y'all leveling Vigor?
Now I will agree it is a pain especially if the connection is wonky but for me I'd rather go up against this thing than a Moonveil Lagger, Double Vykes Crouch spammed or somebody specifically abusing the way status works in PVP with that shotgun crossbow and sleep darts or low level invaders with the Madding hand.
- Anonymous
I still wish this thing was a heavy thrusting sword or even a great spear... But it's not a bad weapon. The weapon art is nice too, if a bit phobia-inducing.
- Anonymous
The fact that they didn’t have two versions of this available from the remembrance as “hornscent” and “frenzied” is crazy… frenzied would do fire damage and horn would be same as it is now
- Anonymous
kinda stupid that you can't use it on actual enemies, mostly relegating it's use to just be annoying in multiplayer
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Its not that i want to complaint about this weapon. I just can't agree with:
- Grab attack skill that catches you almost in all situations, even if you're rolling.
- CDD scaling.
- Regular Greatsword move.
- No Frenzy
- Not so good base damage
- Not so long for a Greatsword
- A weapon that comes from a good boss, and yet, is very mediocre
Again, it's not too much of a complaint.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
This weapon needs a re-work. Max of C,D,D scaling makes no sense, especially with an average base damage. Sacred Relic Sword outclasses this in every way.
- Anonymous
I am pissed the ash of war is not one of the madness move of the boss and it doesnt have madness build up.
- Anonymous
Not complaining too much because i like the Weapon, but would be cool if this were a Paired Blade, with the Greatsword on the right and a Dagger on the other side kinda how Midra does, and the Dagger would have the unique moveset with rapid thrusts.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Finally, the weapon that will allow me to force enemy gamers to play DS2 in Elden Ring. Your ADP is now 5. Good luck rolling.
- Anonymous
should have done frenzy just like hand of malenia should have done rot. idc if it's not lore accurate
- Anonymous
I am not here to be good at pvp. I am not here to complain about any lack of madness or the like. I am here to use the weapon art to skewer someone and then probably die immediately after. It is my one purpose.
- Anonymous
This weapon becomes the most broken thing in pvp if you actually learn how to time the AoW. People will get used to it if you mindlessly spam L2.
- Anonymous
It has no sharp edge, but has a pointy end.
It should have been a spear or heavy thrusting sword.
- Anonymous
How is anyone complaining about this weapon? I've seen so many invaders use this Ash and they keep whiffing. It's so easy to avoid. If you get caught by this, you are bad
- Anonymous
Wow, honestly a bunch of babies here. Unless the Wi-Fi is shiz and get phantom grabbed this is a very easy weapon to punish. Also it doesn’t do that much damage compared to like double GUTS or something of that sort that people have all over the place. This isn’t crutch you guys are just bad.
- Anonymous
I really don’t get why everyone says its a crutch. This weapon art is easy to dodge unless the person using it is a mcdonalds wifi warrior,
And even then with crit talisman, sacred scorpion charm, holy cracked tear, rakshasa armor, bloodsucking cracked tear…
Most ive seen is 1600 damage. The recovery frames if you miss are MASSIVE. Allowing even if you do the follow up, for extreme punishes. This weapon only one shots if you have below 50 vigor (lets be honest, nobody does after the DLC.)
AND you have to build YOUR WHOLE CHARACTER around it… that comes with drawbacks…
And the recovery frames…
And it STILL doesnt one shot most times.
It’s not a crutch. Not when stuff like storm blade ganking… scattershot throw bleed affinity..
this is no crutch.
- Anonymous
Crutch for wanna be holy mains lmao. once you dodge their spam they either off themselves or proceed to run like kids. I forgive invaders who use this tbh.
- Anonymous
Most who use this only use the ash of war. Please keep using it because I've learned it's timing and how to punish it :)
- Anonymous
Used this to beat Leda and Allies into submission <3
All hail the lord of frenzied flame
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Honestly not that bad, if you get caught by the weapon art it’s because you where too busy spamming and got punished.
- Anonymous
I feel bad for the frenzy enjoyers, but horned warrior/thorny bros can rejoice with this one.
- Anonymous
Fundamentally a broken weapon, due to the fact that vanilla ER's netcode is garbage (it introduces about 100ms extra ping on top of packet loss due to the way they attempted to solve malicious packets) this weapon basically can't be reliably dodged or spaced without playing too passive to do literally anything on vanilla. But on seamless? It's a total joke, nobody uses it. I've seen maybe 2 people try to spam this like they do on vanilla and unfortunately for them it actually has counterplay there, you can actually dodge and punish it without getting grabbed out of your roll from 10 feet away.
The weapon is unbalanced and only strong (to an unfair degree) on poor connections, common sense and experience with the game makes it obvious that this weapon is fundamentally broken. Everyone who dislikes it is completely justified, and everyone who uses it deserves every fetid pot and point down in the world.
- Anonymous
I don't care what half-a$$ed lore you come with to justify this has no madness build-up, that excuse would only be remotely valid if we picked up the sword from the ground ala serpent hunter. But no, we get from the rememberance of THE lord of frenzied flame, who spewn madness across the entire room when wielding it. The whole abyssal woods have been burnt by the flame, so in-game lore tells this weapon FAILED to seal the frenzied flame.
You just don't like madness because the one neuron remaining in your brain is just as scared shtless as torrent is. But guess what? Vyke's war spear is there to remind you there's no avooding it, you have to deal with it one way or another.

If you don’t like this weapon, you’re the problem. Invading people that gank never felt so good
So much whinging about this weapon. Makes me want to upgrade it and use it.
- Anonymous
Are people really comparing this weapon to people who literally glitch the game to have unlimited HP. Get a grip, I know this weapon has horrible hit boxes, but from (for what ever reason) made this weapon like this. If anything hate the weapon and not the person.
- Anonymous
I don't enjoy playing with or against this. Enforces an extremely passive playstyle where you roll away early to not get caught by the long range grab which consequently ignores your i-frames because it is a grab, and it has so much Hyper Armor that you cannot trade into it even with the largest weapons and the hardest hitting Ashes of War, this will win any trade. And even if you successfully dodge this attack, the optional follow-up makes only a handful of weapons able to actually punish this weapon for whiffing without trading into the explosions of golden spikes. All in all, this is by far the most powerful command grab in the game, and it comes with all the benefits and consequences of that description. It's really strong, but it encourages your opponent to play in one of the least fun ways possible. At least it isn't so strong that you can spam it, at least it's predictable and thus it's not necessarily CHALLENGING to play around it, but that doesn't mean I have to enjoy it or like the intentions of the attack. Also, why does this have a grab box attached to the feet? The weapon obviously has a capsule around it when executing the move, but why is there a second capsule around the player's feet that will also grab someone? That part is just wack.

You're telling me a weapon made from THE SOUL OF THE LORD OF FRENZY, doesn't have madness build up
This weapon doesn't build up Madness on characters, but it builds Madness on real players.
Enemies get Madness because it gets them even if they roll.
Users get Madness because it doesn't do Madness, No Fire, Horrible Scaling, and is a Holy Damage based weapon.
