Elden Ring Multiplayer Guide

Multiplayer Menu

The Multiplayer Menu can be accessed from the "Multiplayer" tab within the Main Menu. Here, diverse Multiplayer Items can be used to interact with other players.

Players can also set a Multiplayer Password and a Group Password from the Multiplayer Menu.

  • Setting a Multiplayer Password will make it so you can only be matched for most multiplayer features by other people using the same password. This, however, does not avoid Invasions nor support multiplayer (e.g. summoned Hunters who activated a Blue Cipher Ring).
  • The Group Password gives special priority to certain multiplayer features from players who use that same Group Password. Meaning players are more likely to come across world messages, summon signs, bloodstains, phantoms, and so on from peers sharing a Group Password.

Message Menu

The message menu allows you to write messages that players in other worlds can read at the same spot that you left them. Elden Ring allows you to change the format of the message and add Gestures to the message as well.

Players can rate other people's messages. When a message is rated, the HP of the player that left the message will be replenished.

Multiplayer Items in Elden Ring

Players are able to use Multiplayer Items to engage in the different types of multiplayer experiences. This can be done from either the Inventory or the Multiplayer Menu. Here are all the existing Multiplayer Items and their effects.

Honestly this game online is one of the worst out there. I help others in co-op sometimes, but really, why don't use spirit ashes if ur struggling? Souls game are not made for multiplayer, much less that "pvp". Lol

will i get summoned more often if i make my character female? cuz of depraved teenage boys. or less cuz they will think girls are bad at games or smth? anyone done the testing

Fextralife deleted a comment in this section and I gotta say it wasn’t a bad decision. I mean there were like ten replies about how to grief other players and one of them was straight up evil.

fyi if u summon someone and emote, the furled finger cannot see ur icon on the compass. i was summoned in some catacomb earlier and couldnt find them, turns out they were sitting on an elevator waiting for me

Strange occurance in the Leyndell Sewers: Summoned to host, host got invaded. instead of using weapons, host and invader clobbered eachother with bare fists while we humble furled fingers watched on. it took so long I forgot who won the fight.

If you summon me, only to immediately send me home and waste my time, I'm blocking you. Imagine asking for help and then when it arrives you disrespect them like that.
If you think that's okay then I don't want to help you anyway.

I still hate that it's only 1 invader per session.

I miss how it was in DS3 with 3 co-operators, & 2 invaders, sometimes 3 invaders I think, if you were in the clan areas (I can't remember what they called them, the special allegiances)

4 player max with 1 invader ****ing sucks.

You basically have to be a complete try hard PvP warrior to even remotely stand a chance, or play the long game & using the mimic consumable to get sneaky attacks, or use enemies.

I'd rather they increase to 2-3 invaders & give an Elden Ring version of the "seed" from DS3 that turned AI hostile to invaders too.

I love getting summoned to help someone and they have 400 max HP. that's too low even for stormveil. folks, please, level your vigor. it is the best stat in the game. str/int/fth/dex/arc might help you do more damage you can't do any damage at all if you are dead

                    • Anonymous

I've noticed some interesting aesthetic-based trends in being summoned as a cooperator. Keep in mind that I'm still summoned by relatively normal players no matter what I play as.

"Waifu" when in co-op is mostly summoned by gankers, squishy katana wielders, or by fellow waifu characters, You hear the "You're beautiful" prattling pate a lot here.

as the Cosplayer (ex: merchant, page, oracle envoy, etc) you get summoned to more worlds with fellow cosplayers, sometimes the host and your fellow furled fingers will all be dressed & named as enemies and it'll be a jolly time for all.

when I tried the "femboy" look I was summoned primarily by mature women characters or strongwoman characters, sometimes strongmen, reliable to stay in combat while you heal/buff them as they often level vigor.

as an armored strength unit I'm mostly summoned by mages or faith builds who need a distraction, but very evenly spread across pretty much all types of players, everyone needs a little muscle now and then.

mages are often summoned by fellow mages, strength units in need of support, gankers, or squishy katana wielders.

It's interesting to see, What kind of outfits get you guys summoned to what kinds of players?

                      • they need to fix this **** like having the in game enemies only attack you in ****ing annoying when fighit in invader like pick on or the other have an invade be attack by in game enemies or have enemie not attack you while being invaded

                        • Anonymous

Couldn't we just choose a password for co-oping at any level? Say we all just put "sunbro" as the password? Granted new players could summon any level of player and level 150s or higher for that matter could summon new players who can't do anything; but we could still eliminate the possibility of not being able to summon anyone for cooping because we leveled too high. Or we could choose passwords for specific levels i.e. 60, 80, 125, 150, 180, 200 and above.

When you become decent at pvp and pve, co-operating becomes this fun game mode of protecting\guiding one or two silly little guys that don't know much but are trying their bests, or having a highly functional raid team that demolishes bosses and literally anything else in your path.

It's not everywhere but there are hackers on pc at around RL 130 that just summon you somewhere (usually in front of Melania) and try to do something to you.
I'm not sure what because I always alt f4, I see a sleep pot effect that disappears really quick and I take an instant hit to my poise.
It's really ironic how dumb they are, you'd think they would try to be smarter and try to lull you into a false sense of security but they just brainlessly sit there summoning over and over with their hacks on, with full knowledge that you can block people.

Also can I just ask why like 99% of hackers I run into are from china?
Like are their people so unhappy with their lives that this kind of thing is the only way they feel good about themselves?

Has anyone else ever experienced being able to play online multiplayer in this game without having PS Plus? This has happened to me at least twice now and while I think it is awesome I’m more than a little confused? Also, is this cross platform playable? — The Fist of Fury

almost every time I try to play co-op, and sometimes when I invade, I just crash to desktop. its so annoying. can't believe it hasn't been fixed yet. the instant I start to connect to another player, the whole thing just dies. takes all the wind out of my sails and makes me not want to play anymore. i could do it all alone, again, but its just not fun anymore

I miss covenants. Being able to affiliate with in-lore factions and the albeit small variety of different invasion types gave a greater sense of community and interaction. This just feels like different coats of paint over host vs. red, which was always the obligatory and least interesting invasion type to me. Hopefully Shadow of the Erdtree adds something, even mad spirits like ds3 mound makers would go a long way to making multiplayer more enjoyable.

                                      Hello there,

I did many searchs about the following questions but I did not find any pertinent answer, maybe you may help me :

                                      - In Colosseum, can you make a simple duel (1vs1) with a friend using a password ?
                                      - If yes, does the result of the fight affect your current rank ?

Thank you very much for your replies!

no point with the duelist items since you still run the risk of a gank and you don't even get an arc for winning if you do if you actually get someone that's not a coward

Love getting hosts who do nothing at all to help fight the boss killed so I can teabag them. If you're going to be passive, at least make a healer or something.

As a middle-aged player, I have just figured out that the optimal boss-battle strategy in this game is to use Furlcalling Finger Remedy to summon a bored teenager who zooms ahead of you, slices up the boss in 1.43 seconds, does a little dance, and vanishes. I am extremely okay with this. Thank you, bored teenagers of the world, you are providing an invaluable service to us olds who just want to ride around on the horsey and talk to weird guys.

How about you don't send me to another world unless it's 100% certain I'll get there and we will play,

Yikes. So many people complaining about people using r1 spam in PvP, but I have some revolutionary advice. If you roll through their r1 and hit them with any weapon in the game, you win the trade. You can make that easier with bloodhound step. I use a bleed greatsword with either piercing fang, or idk... literally any other skill in the game. No need to get fancy. I win most of my invasions and can kill you in 1-3 hits. And you know what? I like it when the wizard spam casts in my face and gets 1 shot. Lord knows they deserve it. The real war crimes in PvP is when Gandi or Jesus invades you, gets your trust, and then just straight up betrays you faster than Sosuke Aizen. Ever hear Jesus screaming, "THIS IS SPARTA!" Well, me either, until today.

I hate being locked into this mode. I don't want to be the meat shield for a mage spammer and a Faith cheeser that have their left shoulder triggers taped down. Just let me rematch the bosses in peace and you can have your broken stuff, I don't care. But don't force me to be dependent on these people if I want to learn a boss's moveset. It's so annoying and I'm not playing through the whole game again just for some fights.

Pretty insane how many steps backward they've taken in terms of multiplayer mechanics since DS1. DS2 expanded on DS1's concepts for covenants and improved the incentives to participate in multiplayer, then DS3 stepped it back a bit, then Elden Ring outright gutted the entire system. What a shame.

                                                      • Anonymous

I really thought Mohg or Rykard would have been our looking glass knight/spears of the church fight since they both run the primary invasion covenants of the game, the Bloody Fingers and the Recusants. Here's hoping for it in the DLC I guess, I really miss the PvE/PvP interactions.

Really a shame what came of invasions, you no longer feel like a miniboss lurking in another players world, but instead you feel like a trash mob that exists to get ganked into oblivion.

Are there level restricitions when I use only Group Passwords (like SEEKERS) for summoning? (Mulitplayer password field ist empty). I wonder because I see no summon signs in front of Godfrey(H...Lo). I am level 50 and would like summon somebody with a higher level ...
If there are such level restricitions i would understand that because the majority of players don´t go in the final boss stage with level 50. But if the level restrictions are not there when I use the group password then its the same as I use the mulitplayer password summoning with a friend (where we have the same password).

                                                                • Anonymous

I am looking for other players, the 5 big group passwords are entered (which you can currently find on the net), but I don't see any summon signs. The field for multiplayer passwords is empty. I thought that the group passwords also removes the level limit for summoning, do they?
There probably aren't many players who are level 50 before the end bosses. So I thought that using group passwords is a solution. Any ideas?

                                                                  • Anonymous

I just wanted to say that both you and this game became garbage, there are several reasons but the most important is pvp. Tired of seeing the same weapons and people, its getting annoying after a while you know? from my experience (especially right now) Elden Ring is all about weapon skill spamming, also invasions and summonings became way worse. Literally I dont enjoy both pve and pvp (in this case the whole Elden Ring) after gaining all these achievements and 1000s of hours Im done here. Although Dark Souls series doesnt look that much active anymore but still much better than this, at least I enjoy even I die by invasions or in duels but in Elden Ring its usually like ''Haha Corpse Piler goes brrr'' in short the game seems to be played by 1IQ people not only this but also Ive seen multiple people spamming Corpse Piler and bleed to Crucible Knights, Deathbirds, Gargoyles, Radagon and Elden Beast. Hope you all enjoying really...

                                                                      • Anonymous

As someone who doesn't PvP, whenever I'm summoned into a world where there's already a password summon present, I Finger Sever and block both people. They're usually giant douchebags who'll do stuff like kick you just as the boss is about to die, or summon you just to gank an unsuspecting invader.

                                                                        • Anonymous

Don't do it. It never makes the game easier. Learn how to dodge the bosses yourself, please, for your own sake. Otherwise you will get invaded by someone who lives 35,000 miles away from you and can't be hit by anything, but has no problem hitting you right back. Heavens forbid you make it to the boss and they'll just have more HP, more unpredictable targeting, and snap in and out of animations. Oh the Godskin Noble stopped rolling? No he didn't, now lick the pavement. I love this game dearly but good gravy the online is a disaster.

                                                                          • Anonymous

Coop in this game is annoying. So many hosts just run away from the boss and cast something they saw on YouTube. Then they get roll-caught and die in one hit.

                                                                            • Anonymous

                                                                              • Anonymous

                                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                                  • Anonymous

From soft, I have a great idea. Make. Great rune that prevents invaders as long as the rune is active.
You can make up a boss or something and he can drop it.

I invade a lot, and really feel bad now because I can’t tell the difference between toxic ganks I want to murder and someone just wanting to game with their girlfriend or something.
Just a switch or something for no invasions would make the game significantly better easily. I would hate being on invaded when I’m just trying to play with my friend.

                                                                                    • Anonymous

is there a list that show all the boss that represent the open world area. So far as i know, if you kill the old general in the snow mountain castle, you cant summon anyone aymore for the whole right part of snow mountain even if the ice dragon and deathbird in snow mountain are still alive.

                                                                                      • Anonymous

Not all invaders are toxic, just like not all hosts and phantoms are wholesome. You don’t sign up for a team, and I’ve seen crap from allies who quit on you (finger serverer) or t-bag their dead host, or from hosts who kick you out before you collect your reward, or who summon you for an ambush duel session. You can’t change people’s toxic behavior, but for own peace of mind you can block players accounts and never deal with them again. I’m not saying block every invader (let’s be real), but there was one that kept popping inside a boss fight, so I blocked the player and so far did not encounter him again. I don’t know how well this works on PC, but on the PS it seems to work fine.

                                                                                        • Anonymous

It can be distracting sometimes, but this one time me and another FF escorted a Host from Drainage Channel to Malenia's boss room. The guy never fought her before and you can imagine the panic once the initial cutscene ended. Once the shock wore off and he landed a few hits, he began to laugh gleefully when he discovered his Fire Incantations were dealing heavy damage. It was overall entertaining and he was nice enough to thank us when it was over. 10/10 Would line up to be summoned by him again :)

For the longest time I was avoiding multiplayer for fear of cheaters and cheese builds invading me left and right. By time I was halfway through Mt. Gelmir, I manned up, switched to online, and decided my +16 Naginata was good enough. And....I was right. I don't invade, but I help as a co-op summon and it's a lot of fun. I like that I can send my summon sign from anywhere, even from horseback, and the adventures I have helping hosts add some much needed spice to the playthrough. Diving into danger, killing bosses, and the short celebrations after are wholesome and very satisfying.

My only complaint is that while I'm summoned, my spirit summon (usually Mimic), goes away permanently. Oh, and connection errors are a pain.

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

Sometimes you are waiting minutes, it's just Radagon, Malenia and maybe Godfrey, so many connections errors!!!, the host dies quickly, because the HP is much more, you have to change your weapons and playstyle (For me: Blade of Death and Eochaid's Dancing Blade). In 20 or more attempts only one time we finished Elden Beast.

                                                                                                            • This game would bennefit a lot from a matchmaking feature. Let the player access some filters, like cooperative or invasion/invader level range, even items filters (like testing anti Rivers of Blood builds, or avoiding these encounters). If a RL1 wants to invade a RL125, and the RL125 wants to invade a RL1, why not let them do it? And you may let an option for a open search after not finding any other player within you filters.

The system they developed for the Sousls series was cool and all, but just feel too outdated now.

And it's almost completely dead, takes like 10 minutes to get invasions or be summoned in all but a few areas. DS3 had a more active multiplayer before the servers shut down than ER has.

Shameful for FROM to leave the PC port in such an unacceptable state for months and they seemingly just don't care at all and have done literally nothing to fix it. Any other dev would've been dragged over burning coals for this but FROM gets a free pass and an "oh well, let's all hope they make an advertised selling point of the game we paid for be baseline functional next patch!". I'm never one of their games again, this is ridiculous.

Malenia has a lot of summoning going on, but pretty much nowhere else does, besides some early game areas

                                                                                                                        • After coop mode came out i am now wondering why coudnt they do it in og game? This is open world game with ton filed bosses, and dungeons and places what requiring torrent. But all of it basicly locked, you need to resummon after every boss, all caves are locked and walking in open world without torrent is really boring.

                                                                                                                          • So you can invade to someone only if he has a phantom, so they can not completely cheese game, I understand that. But then you have hunters what spawns after 3 seconds you invade and now this is 3 on 1. Literally why should hunters even exist. And even if host has 3 phantoms and tongue active only one red can invade. Phantastic.

                                                                                                                            • Anonymous

How is it possible that there is only one summon sign showing up at sellia tunnel at level 40?

I’ve progressed through the game normally. I spent money on other stuff besides leveling but still.

It’s just one person who is being summoned by other people, and then they show up for me after a few minutes.

                                                                                                                              There really isn’t more??

Once we tried inside the capital, it worked just fine.
I get the whole thing where it locks you out of co-op within a legacy dungeon/catacomb/etc after you beat the boss, but the open world should not have the same kinda restrictions.

I want to see if the host makes it. I'm emotionally invested at this point
