Its not absolute cancer but I can say as someone who used the weapon in prev patches I'm pleased either. I think the issue is, more than anything else, its a bit hard to know what will and what wont stagger someone out of it. There's also, at least I think, a difference in the hyper armor when someone winds up the attack in the air vs when someone actually gets started. The windup isn't so bad, I think the hyper armor changes are fairly good there. You're slightly more durable and won't get knocked out by someone just coughing on you, but it can sometimes feel just kinda random whether or not they get knocked out in the follow up. I also feel like people are lying when they say the wind up is slow. I wouldn't call it instantaneous, you don't need to frame perfect dodge on start up, but it is pretty quick. I will grant it is funny to knock people out of it, esp ppl who spam it, but also you are one missed timed attack away from getting blended for trying to punish it after someone tries it for the fourth or fifth time (I say this as someone who doesnt skimp on vig, either, usually having 55-60 by endgame).
I liked it more before when you had to put more thought into when to start up the aow as opposed to now where people treat it the same way they do the Stormhawk axe or the blackflame tornado aow, no thought except run up next to them and spam the aow. At least the huge dex requirement mostly limits the shenanigans to higher levels though I feel bad for anyone having to deal with it in any narrow hallways.

How well does Ironjar work with this? Wondering if the added poise works with waterfowl.

- Anonymous
Slightly stronger than a keen uchigatana, both maxed. But the uchi is much more flexible, so i simply carry them both.
- Anonymous
Recently used this against Hoarah Loux and somehow 1st impact of his earth shaker didn't knock me out from WFD startup animation...I did it twice to win against him felt really satisfying.
I finally managed to do the full waterfowl dance combo in real life. I feel motivated

I hate trying to look for actual comments ABOUT the weapon and only getting stuff about the aow THE AOW HAS A SEPERATE PAGE FOR A REASON

I'm a mage and used the Black knife tiche and spent the past 2 days fighting Malenia, just for the cool dress, and I saw that this sword was something I could pick up, from everything I've read it's very dex heavy and seems situational. Should I pick it up or the pretty flower explosion even if the both of them are very situational. And I'm new with a 100 hours in the game, just want some tips.

People before 1.10: "This Ash of War doesn't have enough hyper-armor, I get staggered out of it too easily."
People after 1.10: "This Ash of War has too much hyper-armor, I keep getting one-shotted."

Fun to use now, but the whiners have no standing. Super easy to counter (run away during the long wind up, parry) or knock a player out of (r1s on great thrusting swords and spears knocked me out of the animation with about 72 poise). The damage with the buffs is insane, but this is also a slow ash.
I've been saying 60 vigor is meta for like 18 months. Do that and this won't one shot you.

- Anonymous
One time someone used the ash of war for this and I squashed him with the war cry heavy its not too hard to counter in this patch, and if you are a guy who uses big weapons or heavy weapons you aren't gonna have a problem with this ash of war in PVP.
- Anonymous
LOL, the people who cry here after being deleted by WFD. It has a freaking slow startup, and can be easily interrupted/parried because of that slow startup. It can be evaded easier than Malenia's because it lacks the reach. My Ice Claymore Spinning Slash can stagger tf out this AOW.
Yes, it's dangerous, but totally managable and highly risky for the user to spam it.

Mike wazowski dreams of a game where no other weapon class but Katanas is viable, where all gamers from all the lands of cringe can do nothing but L2 waterfowl dance into eachother and hope to out trade the 2 OLPs before their bubble tear pops.
And then you will fight the ultimate end game boss, Latency.
goty 2024

This will be nerfed next patch for sure which is kinda sad, sometimes i cant understand this community, if u get hit by the slow ash of war than it is your own fault, if you are talking about the damage waves of darkness on a CGS does do the same dmg with HA that cant be broken
But yeah im 100% sure that this weapon will get nerfed because many players will cry about this and CGS will get even more buffs (it starts to get meta)

A decent weapon even if you ignore the "I win" button that is waterfowl dance.
- Anonymous
After patch 1.10 the waterfowl can't be interrupted anymore and it stunlocks you for -80% HP.
- Anonymous
I wish that waterfowl dance wasn’t parriable like spinning slash as it’s so slow you’ll almost never land it on someone and it has basically no hyperarmor so it’s really easy to be hit out of. Right now it’s very easy to parry this if you’re even just ok at parrying. The only thing that kind of negates this is a weird interaction where when mashing L2 you just walk out of the parried animation sometimes but it doesn’t seem too consistent and is clearly unintended. Right now you’re better off using the Nagakiba in PvP and PvE and I wish this was at least good enough to compete as I love this weapon.
- Anonymous
waterfowl dance + godskin swaddling cloth is probably insane
- Anonymous
Just did justice to Gideon and horalux in ng+ 14 with it horaxs second Phase was 3 seconds.
- Anonymous
I would personally trade the bleed build-up for 1% HP on hit like the Butchering Knife and Great Stars, up the Dex scaling to at least an A, and add some poise onto Waterfowl Dance. It would be a much better reward for beating the hardest boss in Soulsborne history. Other than that, very fun weapon, it was the one I used to beat Elden Beast.
- Anonymous
I use this when I’m a hunter to teach invaders to dodge waterfowl dance for later (nobody has dodged it yet)
- Anonymous
So many Elden Ring weapons need a boost for PvE. There's no reason that you go through one of the most difficult bosses in history for this piddly little stick. This should ANNIHILATE multiple enemies at the same time but it doesn't.
- Anonymous
idk if it's not a meta katana. It looks cool, cool weapon art, has good range, and does enough damage ng+7
- Anonymous
I really wanna use this since it looks awesome especially with Malenia armor, but my Uchi is probably better especially due to unsheathe.
Maybe I'll just use malenia armor with my Uchi and switch to the Hand when I want fun
- Anonymous
80 dex + rotten winged sword insignia + millicent's prosthesis if you are on ng plus + thorny cracked tear + blue dancer charm(useless if you are wearing heavy stuff) + bull goat talisman(if you are wearing heavy stuff) + shard of alexander + golden vow + flame, grant me strength. after all this, whether you wipe out the bosses in one or two salvos is entirely up to your timing.
- Anonymous
I used this for my ng+ malenia build. For as fun as it was, I do agree with some of the criticisms. I'd trade the bleed build-up for 1hp per hit in a heartbeat, and its a little silly that the boss's unparryable move is suddenly parryable in pvp, though I do understand that From may have wanted to avoid having players spam it maybe? but at the same time I don't know how much forethought goes into stuff like that given the other things left in the game pvp wise. That also being said I am curious as to what the timing is like because I have been in a situation where another play attempted to parry me fowling and just got blended, so if nothing else its a punishing aow to miss a parry on. Though it does suck that anything that hits harder than a light breeze can knock you down. Otherwise though, while I know people grumble about the dex scaling, I will say malenia's sword does have an chunky edge over both a keen infused uchi or nagakiba (~40 more AR at 99 dex). B scaling isn't bad esp in a game when it doesn't crop up very often (esp if you were to have the astounding 48 dex to use it). Overall, fun to use for the 5 mins you have it in ng, maybe better suited to a ng+ run (or just be very dedicated to fighting malenia 1/2 through the game and underleveled, god speed.)
- Anonymous
its good simply because its the length of two uchigatanas taped together
- Anonymous
I'd trade out that random blood loss for the 1% hp back from the cleaver/great stars
- Anonymous
gotta love the logic in this game:
doesn't have bleed in the fight, has bleed when we use it.
and vice versa for the mantis blade
- Anonymous
Turns out that rotten sword insignia, godskin swaddling cloth, and Melania's great rune make you very dangerous.
- Anonymous
Underrated weapon in PvP. Catch some poor ****er spamming dragon communion spells and use the AoW to give them a free ticket to the Greater Will
- Anonymous
A lot of these unique weapons aren't that fitting for a lot of players. I've been playing specialized builds from the start and always got bored. Since I've gone Quality a whole store of weapons have opened up for me and the only thing I have to do is make sure I upgrade them till (near) max and carry them with me. Now what I love about Quality (absurd that I haven't figured this out with 500 hours of gameplay), is that you switch weapons based on the situation. No more being stuck with your specialized set that this one player can counter. No more immune bosses, you just prepare differently. And this weapon has one of the most unique weapon arts in the game, just like a dragons breath, you gotta find a moment to use it. So a very proper off-hand for both PvP and PvE, but very situational.

Who would win:
The literal end game katana of the most powerful demigod of the Shattering
or
The Katana you can literally start with
(hint, the winner's name starts with U and ends with chigatana)
I have never understood Fromsoftware's logic when it comes to this, though it has been consistent since Dark Souls 1. Why make the weapon you start with more powerful in every single conceivable way than the weapon you have to play 150 hours for?
- Anonymous
its so weird to me that you can parry this skill but not spinning slash, some consistency please fromsoft
- Anonymous
You literally have to kill the hardest boss in the game to get this and it's only B scaling in dex? A weapon of the most powerful anime swordwoman of the shattering is only B scaling in dex? That should have been A scaling +0 and S at +10, it's just common logic
- Anonymous
Mid weapon, you'll never get the chance to use the full weapon art seriously and often you'll get knocked out of it. Doesn't even have any unique animations either. Frayed blade clears.
- Anonymous
The reason this thing doesn't build up bleed is because the sword doesn't hit as much as you think. If you use it without proper requirements, you can see that it only hits a few times, the AOE slashes don't build up status effects.

The FP cost written here is wrong. 9-7 is what’s written but that’s only if you have the Carian Filigreed Crest on. The normal FP cost is 12-9.

Am I the only one who wanted it to have the prosthetic built into the arm instead of holding it?
- Anonymous
I like it :) the boss fight may or may not be a fun one but I like it. Was testing it out on that big dude that drops down on the occasion at the haligtree town and it was just doing a bunch of staggering and damn good dps yes ik there’s better but this is still a really fun weapon
- Anonymous
Il più grande vantaggio pvp di sta arma è quello di suscitare i più grandi trami che hai avuto di sto gioco
- Anonymous
this weapon shouldnt have any bleed buildup but instead have better dex scaling, that would honestly make it way better
- Anonymous
they didn't build a handle for this thing even it isn't a prosthetic for us like malenia, holy **** it's so annoying to look at
- Anonymous
If this can be boosted by bloodflame then it would have been broken
- Anonymous
Dual wielding these is moderately fun. The range is great but the blood loss is very underwhelming and the AoW has basically no poise to it. Definitely no worth suffering through the most unfun, unfair boss in From history for it.
- Anonymous
there is nothing in the game that cannot be killed with his ability, just dodge and oppress the ability XD
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Devs were merciful not to have Malenia inflict bleed, when her weapon is perfectly capable of doing that.
Would have made her even more insane boss fight than she is.
- Anonymous
You can actually fight Malenia before completing Mountaintops of the Giants by collecting and using the secret passage Medallion when you arrive at the Mountaintops. I found out by accident.
- Anonymous
Mostly disappointing, but at least you feel kind of cool using it. As a PvE player there are definitely better options. And while I understand the lore reason why this doesn't deal Scarlet Rot build up, it is a bit of a shame that it doesn't.
- Anonymous
I sure hope from will buff this a bit more for pvp. Maybe faster windup and longer jumprange. Sadly its too easy to counter or to just roll out from. But when you manage to jump in 3 dudes and catch all of them.. man best feeling you can have in an invasion :D
- Anonymous
I can’t get down to the invader cheese spot anymore it’s bouncing off the walls now during the weapon art
- Anonymous
It's a shame they didn't add Malenia's prosthetic glove instead of this usual shank as a handle, it would look much cooler :(
- Anonymous
I dont get it. Why doesn't do her blade a scarlet rod but a bleed.
- Anonymous
Deals about 6% more damage than keen Nagakiba at 80 dex. Not worth the range loss and useless AoW. Naga can also be buffed. Deals equal damage to blood Nagakiba at 80 dex/arc. Nagakiba is just better.
- Anonymous
Most swaggerless katana ever. They wanted us to like this so bad
- Anonymous
Yet another weapon that is so much better than everything in the game it ruins everything.
I’ve tried multiple pvp builds attempting to be creative, b there’s no point when weapons like this exist. And most host are moonveil, scarlet rot spamming, 2 over leveled phantoms mouth breathers.
This time accurately will kill the host, and most of the time the phantoms also. Stacked with damage talismans I’m obliterating all their health and killing all 3 with one L2 combo. It’s stupid and uncreative as can be, but it one of the few options to deal with 3v1 eggheads.
The strongest physical katana, about 40ap over uchi/nag/serpent at 80dex.
- Anonymous
For some reason when using the AoW, your pierce damage negation is lowered by maybe -30%.
- Anonymous
for some reason in my game, buffing myself with flame grant me strength and commander standard is making this do less damage. i have no clue what's happening. first attack sequence going from doing around 1800 to doing 600 ._.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
If you’ve never tried one of these, it’s like the Greatsword version of a Thrusting Sword, and sort of fills a similar niche to a Katana in that it’s a medium sized, still fast but ‘heavier’ dexterity weapon. Like Katanas, they’re fast enough to deal good bleed while still strong enough to reliably stagger enemies.
- Anonymous
So it's not getting buffed, huh? Sad. Could at least give the weaponart increased bleed buildup, like the Frayed Blade in DS3. Risky long windup for a good bleed reward. But no, let's give curved and twinblades quadruple hits and instant procs on single attacks instead. FROM make excellent games, but their balancing SUCKS!
- Anonymous
the only thing i would change about this weapon is giving it serpentbone blade R2s, since malenia kinda has a flurry attack like that
- Anonymous
I am Hand of Malenia, Blade of Malenia, Blade of Miquella, Hand of Miquella.
- Anonymous
The part about duplicating it, giving one to Enia now and the second as soon as you get access to her, I think after killing Godrick at Stormveil in NG+ I only had three Mausoleums after duplicating what I wanted for my first playthrough and I didn't think of getting two of these. If I go to the first mausoleum in weeping peninsula in my NG+ will I get the option to duplicate remembrances I've already cashed in with Enia or will they be wiped clean until I beat those bosses again? I really can't see myself beating Malenia in NG+ her nightmare second phase was hard enough the first time.
- Anonymous
*jumps out of well and presses L2 on Malenia*
NOW I'VE GOT YOUE POWERS
Malenia then proceeded to punch me in the face.
- Anonymous
Still wishing this weapon had a unique standing R2. I’d imagine it could be that dashing overhead slash Malenia does when you first fight her, something that can be charged to increase the distance. Maybe have it switch to her retreating slash if you backstep during the charge, sort of like how curved swords work.
- Anonymous
weapon art is currently bugged. if you mash L2 after being parried you can just instantly start the weapon art again.
- Anonymous
Sleeper weapon for invasions since a lot of players just don't respect it and get destroyed trading, also rather often bad ganks just bunch up and explode simultaneously.
More decent players will just keep their distance, dodge out of it in time or parry you so it's not that great for duels.
- Anonymous
Why does a Katana - that I need to defeat Malenia and have 48 Dex for - only has a B scaling in Dex when +10ed?
malenia screwed me one last time by giving me a katana that requires a mask, talisman, and a knot tear, only for it to consistently miss anything that isn't a mosh pit of enemies.
- Anonymous
I wish this weapon was shorter. I mean, sure, longer weapon = longer reach, but oversized weapons tend to look pretty ridiculous, and Fashion Ring (Elden Fashion?) is more important to me than an extra foot of reach.
- Anonymous
Wish it had a cosmetic interaction with Malenia's Gauntlet where it would have the lever attachment that connects the blade to the hand when used together.
- Anonymous
I'm annoyed by the people who keep complaining about scaling when AR is all that matters. Hard numbers:
70 Dex
Hand of Malenia - B - 611AR
Keen Uchigatana - A - 571AR
Keen Slender Sword - A - 501AR
Keen Flamberge - A - 651AR
Keen Naginata - A - 596AR
If you've noticed so far, all of these weapons have "better" scaling than this katana., but all fall short of even breaking the 600AR barrier. The only weapon that makes it is the flamberge, which in fact, is a ****ing greatsword and doesn't attack nearly as fast as any of these smaller weapons. I've also chosen 70DEX cus its high, meaning base damage should play a minimal role in this, and what do you know it still comes out on top.
But no this weapon is useless right? so shite cus it doesnt get AR comparable to a colossal weapon right? Elden ring needs more damage in its weapons right? everything deserves S scaling at this point, why even bother
- Anonymous
I'm so sick of Fromsoft trashing on katanas. This needs to have a S dex scaling, a C strength scaling, and AT LEAST a B faith scaling when at max. Scarlet rot buildup 80. bleed buildup 65, deathblight buildup 45. And hyperarmor on the ash alongside significantly reduced damage taken when hit winding up or during the move itself. Stamina cost should be halved. First heavy attack shoud be that lightning quick lunge she does out of the cutscene, and the followup shoud be the the triple wrist slash. should restore player health when you hit something. Needs a much higher base attack rating when upgraded, and the ash of wars range NEEDS to be buffed. I really like the way it looks and would like to use it in PVP but Fromsoft doesnt understand weapon balance and Player Reward. I fought the goddess of rot for this it should be good, not pathetic. Also the fact that you can parry the skill is completely #$%@&*^(!), its a jumping attack. Help me speak out, this needs to be fixed in the next patch.
- Anonymous
As with everything in this game, it's cooler when the boss uses it.
- Anonymous
48 Dex requirement for B scaling? Why is Elden Ring so stingy with giving out S scalings?
- Anonymous
The weapon art will NEVER hit a skilled player. Just use dual bleed spears.
- Anonymous
before starting NG+, I’ve been hunting down bosses I missed using waterfowl dance and fire giant incantations. It’s been like… therapy
- Anonymous
I’ve seen no comment on how the ability is cracked in PvP I know it has a long start up but if your far enough away it dashes to them quickly and melts people especially if they have no shield and try to roll away from it but then get caught by it and also induces panic and fear
