Elden Ring Hornsent Questline Guide
Hornsent in Gravesite Plain
Hornsent is located at the Three-Path Cross Site of Grace [See Shadow of the Erdtree Map Link], you will see Redmane Freyja there as well. After speaking to him, he will give you the Cross Map, which is a diagram depicting the location of three of Miquella's Crosses. Finding the crosses is not mandatory for Hornsent's questline, but finding certain ones will unlock additional dialogue with Sir Ansbach, and they also contain valuable items such as Scadutree Fragments so it is worth it to find them.
(Optional) If you have defeated the Divine Beast Dancing Lion you can speak with the Hornsent Grandam with the Divine Beast Head equipped to obtain the Scorpion Stew. Returning to Hornsent and giving him the stew will grant you x3 Furnace Visage. You will only be able to give him one Scorpion Stew. This can be done even after he moves to Scadu Altus.
Hornsent in Scadu Altus
Hornsent will move to the Highroad Cross Site of Grace once you enter Scadu Altus for the first time [See Shadow of the Erdtree Map Link].
Speak with Hornsent and he will provide you with the New Cross Map to discover four more of Miquella's Crosses. Exhaust his dialogue to learn more about Miquella's intentions.
To progress Hornsent's questline, Miquella's rune must be broken. After doing so, a message will display, "Somewhere a great rune has been broken. And so too, a powerful charm." To break the great rune:
- Enter the Shadow Keep front entrance, through Messmer's Army Encampment. [See Shadow of the Erdtree Map Link]
- Head past the Bonny Village to the eastern part of Scadu Altus, from the Bridge Leading to the Village Site of Grace continue heading north. [See Shadow of the Erdtree Map Link]
After Miquella's great rune is broken, head back to Hornsent at the Highroad Cross Site of Grace to unlock new dialogue with him. Exhaust his dialogue, which will trigger him moving to Shadow Keep.
Hornsent in Shadow Keep
At the Shadow Keep Main Gate Site of Grace, you will be able to summon Hornsent to assist you in fighting against the Golden Hippopotamus.
Leda Betrays Hornsent
NOTE (1): It is not possible to get all the unique items from this part of Hornsent's questline in a single playthrough. You will need a minimum of two playthroughs to acquire all items.
NOTE (2): This part of Hornsent's questline must be done before entering Messmer the Impaler's room from the Dark Chamber Site of Grace, otherwise the summon signs will disappear. Be careful!
Speak with Needle Knight Leda once the great rune is broken. She will ask you who whether she should go after Thiollier or Hornsent. No matter what you suggest, Leda will decide to go after Hornsent in the end. This will cause two summon signs to appear in Shadow Keep.
Just before the elevator to the Storehouse, First Floor Site of Grace in Shadow Keep (also reached by continuing up for a while from the Main Gate Plaza Site of Grace), on the battlements with the the burning boats you will find two summon signs. They'll be in the south, near a set of stairs.
- If you help Leda (the red summon): You will kill Hornsent, ending his questline there. You will be rewarded with Falx, Hornsent's Set, and (after speaking to Leda again at the Highroad Cross Site of Grace) Lacerating Crossed-Tree. This will lock you out of getting Ash of War: Swift Slash, it will make a later boss fight easier, and it will prevent Hornsent from assisting you against Messmer, the Impaler.
- If you help Hornsent (the gold summon): Hornsent's questline will continue, and your next encounter with Leda will be in Enir-Ilim. You will be rewarded with Ash of War: Swift Slash and Leda's Rune. This will lock you out of getting Lacerating Crossed-Tree, Retaliatory Crossed-Tree, and Ansbach's Longbow.
- If you help neither: Eventually, Hornsent's and Leda's questlines will both continue. This will lock you out of getting Lacerating Crossed-Tree and Ash of War: Swift Slash.
Hornsent's Vengeance
Continue exploring Shadow Keep until you encounter Messmer, the Impaler, nearby the Dark Chamber Site of Grace. Hornsent's summon sign will be in the boss arena and you can choose whether or not to summon him for this fight.
- If you summon Hornsent: He will swear vengeance on all Marika's family. You can get more dialog either in Messmer's boss room or at the Highroad Cross Site of Grace. This won't lock you out of any items, but it will make a later boss fight easier and unlock Hornsent's NPC invasion in the Ancient Ruins of Rauh.
- If you do not summon Hornsent: He will sink into despair, and you will next see him in Enir-Ilim. This won't lock you out of any items, but it will make a later boss fight more difficult and prevent Hornsent's NPC invasion in Ancient Ruins of Rauh.
NOTE: Hornsent does not need to survive when summoned to continue his questline.
Hornsent in Ancient Ruins of Rauh
If you summoned Hornsent to help defeat Messmer, the Impaler and exhausted his dialog, he will invade you at the top of the staircase near the Church of the Bud, Main Entrance Site of Grace. When you defeat him, he will drop Falx, Hornsent Set, and Soiled Loincloth. [Map Link]
Hornsent in Enir-Ilim
If Hornsent is not killed throughout his quest, and if he is not summoned to assist you against Messmer, he will fight against you in the NPC battle in Enir-Ilim. After the battle, you'll be able to loot Falx, Hornsent Set, and Soiled Loincloth from his corpse.
Dialogue in Elden Ring: Hornsent
Introduction
- Fie, another? Treading the heels of Miquella? Then, as that woman would surely say, we are in our purposes well aligned. But understand. Your kind are not forgiven. The Erdtree is my people's enemy. By Marika long betray'd, set aflame. I believe Miquella's apologies, when he says our delivery will come. But never will I see your kind as worthy.
- And yet my oath I cannot overlook. If Miquella it is whom you would seek, then comrade, allow me to give you this. These are the sites of the crosses I've found.
- I urge you, follow after Miquella. As long as you abide by his footfalls, you will be no enemy to me. (gives Cross Map)
Giving Scorpion Stew
- What’s this? Do you think me in need of alms? Ah, but this dish... Tis fare o' the tower. I remember fondly this kin-clad scent. ...Brings back memories I'd all but forgot. This, by my troth, is but a dismal copy. Indeed, I think it rather plain to see... Things once broken can never be the same...
- Look. Take this for your troubles, won't you? I desire not to be in your debt. (Gives x3 Furnace Visage)
Giving Additional Scorpion Stew
- I’ve had my fill… Indeed, I have no wish… to wax nostalgic ‘bout days gone by… Nor do I yearn to friendship kindle…
Meeting at Highroad Cross Site of Grace
- You have a knack for timing, my fellow. I’ve found the site of a new cross. Take this. (Gives New Cross Map)
- Miquella has said as much himself – he wishes now to throw it all away. He says the act – though undoubtedly painful – will sear clean the Erdtree’s wanton sin. The truth of his claim can be found at each cross. Tis evidence enough to earn my belief.
- Go to the misshapen tree of umbra. In that forsaken place, blood must spill – the blood of your fellows, the Erdtree faithful.
After the Great Rune is broken
- (If you haven’t met yet) Fie, another? Treading the heels of Miquella? A brazen fellow you must surely be, to loose your tongue to a stranger as I.
- (If you have met) Intriguing. What remains there to be said?
- Do you presume us allies, even now? Though Miquella’s spell is newly broken? I must profess, the spell mattered little. Uphold his covenant Miquella shall, and in godhood redeem our rueful clan. Then Marika, and vilest Erdtree both, will at last be from divinity wrench’d. And surely I ...contented I will be.
- But first, clear sounds the call of vengeance. The impaler, Messmer, must pay his due. In vengeance for the flames, my blade I wield… How could I allow myself to forget? Revenge alone assures me peace of mind.
- Think not to hinder me upon my path. Lest you too wish to face the reckoning.
Fighting Leda in Shadow Keep
- In the end, I knew this day would come. The nature of your kind, I am certain, will always show itself, given time. Interfere not with my business, zealot.
- Assisting Leda
- So, your mongrel blood shows through at last. I was a fool to expect more of you. Small wonder Miquella employed his spells.
- (On player kill): Do not interfere – this is my revenge.
- (On defeat): Apologies… O Mother, wife, and… chil…
- Assisting Hornsent
- What could your purpose possibly be? I do not recollect begging for help.
- (On victory) Do not interfere. I ask you stay back – this is my revenge.
When summoned against Messmer, the Impaler
- Messmer! Foe of my beloved people! In vengeance for the flames, my blade I wield!
- (On victory) Have I made it known accursed Messmer? My clan’s suffering? Their pain? All that they felt? Do you understand now, your ugliness? Aaaaaargh!
After defeating Messmer, if Hornsent was summoned during the fight
- We meet again I see, comrade-in-arms. Upon his end, did you see Messmer's face? Twas sublime - a very tangle of snakes! To think he dared to call us savages. When he himself was most base of all. Ha ha ha ha!
- To say the least, I am to you indebted. Yet unquenched remains my thirst for revenge. The death of Messmer was merely the start. Now comes the piper to collect from Marika, her offspring, and all the Erdtree's denizens... In vengeance for the flames, my blade I wield... If Miquella's redemption soothes the ache...that throbs within, demanding blessed vengeance... Then I wish not to be by him redeemed.
After defeating Messmer, if Hornsent was not summoned during the fight
- What cruelty's this… who would rob me of my one vital purpose? Am I so feeble, witless,, dull of blade… That vengeance was never to have been mine?
- O mother, O most cherished wife and child. It seems vengeance was not mine to enact. Where now should I point my tired blade...
If allied with Needle Knight Leda
- Tis just as the woman said it would be. Lord of the Erdtree, Lord of Marika… You too deserve to face the reckoning.
- (On player kill) Your lord is slain. And you are next, Marika.
- (On defeat) O Miquella… Please… redeem our… clan...

Dialogue Related to Hornsent
Needle Knight Leda
Wondering about the hornsent, are you? True enough, in any other circumstance he’d be at our throats… Long ago, Queen Marika commanded Sir Messmer to purge the tower folk. A cleansing by fire. It’s no wonder the hornsent holds the Erdtree in contempt. That aside, man is by nature a creature of conquest. And in this regard, the tower folk are no different. They were never saints. They just happened to be on the losing side of a war. But it’s still a wretched shame.
I believe the hornsent suspects what I have in mind. He never placed his full trust in me, even under the effect of Kindly Miquella’s spell. He must’ve recognized something. The scent of the killer that slept within me. The stench of crusted blood.
Worthy hornsent. I will dispose of you. Before your thirst for revenge beckons our undoing. I can no longer trust your word.
Redmane Freyja
He's one of the tower's hornsent. I can only assume he fights for his own reasons, and carries his own burdens. But we needn't concern ourselves with his affairs. He, too, was charmed by Kindly Miquella, and guided here. And that makes us allies.
Spirit NPCs
Ev'ryone...burned to cinders...burned away. Put to the torch... by Messmer... and his lot What did we do to deserve such a fate? We merely lived our lives... We lived in peace...
I know... All your resentment lingers yet... The raw stuff from which I shall surely forge a curse. Upon the dastard Messmer's head. Upon Marika's children each and all.

The actual trigger for his invasion in Rauh is at the bottom of the previously mentioned stairs, rather than his spawnpoint which is at the top. Figured I should mention that, since I (and probably a few other people) got confused and thought the trigger was at the top. Idk... maybe I'm just dumb...

Thank u for invading me, im glad i can be the one to put u in the ground & finally end ur ppl. Dont worry, i'll end the golden lineage next & stuff u & marika together in a jar called Alexander.

I lose respect to all npcs who invade you for no reason after being homies. Tf you doing bruh?

People really feel bad for this guy? I don’t. I don’t even blame Marika for exacting revenge. It’s explicit what the hornsent did to the Shamans.
- Anonymous
The hornsent were a bunch of twisted freaks. People need to watch the lore on what they were even doing to Marika’s people.
- Anonymous
I didn't care about his wife, his child or his clan. This guy doesn't even have a name, he's not designed to be a compelling character lol. That's not how you do it. So I don't think there was an intent to begin with. And if there was, then Fromsoft barely tried

Ok so what if:
- I go to the grace before Romina, past his invasion point, before any Messmer business
- summon him for Messmer
This way he shouldn't join the gank fight, right? And I could let him live.

The most misunderstood character in this DLC. If you think his actions reflect poorly on his people - or worse, that they deserved their fate - then you're buying into the same prejudice that turns this world's cycle of violence. Those who hate him are being compelled by the same forces as him. The same force that put Marika's people into jars. In war, you and your enemy both turn the cycle of violence, from opposite sides. He reminds me of Geronimo, an outlaw motivated by protecting his people and hatred of his oppressors, but who is rejected by the Apache people today for putting them in more danger than if he just gave up. There is something to be said about the selfishness of vengeance, even righteous vengenace, and how the inherently personal nature of it can blind you to the bigger picture. Violence is never purely personal. Its consequences spill out into the world as karmic debt. I can only imagine the violence he had planned for Erdtree faithful if Miquella was successful in establishing his Order. One need only look at history to see countless atrocities wrought in the name of so-called compassion. Marika and Hornsent are two sides of the same coin, both slaves to forces greater than them

i really wish we could give him the gormet scorpion stew from hornsent grandam. maybe, in some other timeline, we would be able to save hornsent by having him focus on his love for his people, rather than his hatred for his enemies.
I always and invade him with Leda to deny him his revenge. Hope he enjoys burning with his family and the rest of his rancid, irredeemable race of monsters.

Will he be in enir-illm if i summon him once but not when i kill messmer? Can i kill him in the dark chamber after messmer?

Say what you will about summoning, but the Hornsent shouting “Messmer!” when he’s summoned to fight said boss is superb voice acting

"If they hate our race and think we're evil then we'll ACTUALLY BE THAT BAD in revenge" is the worst characterization in fiction. No one actually feels like that-- it's what people imagine the other side's motive must be.

He refused the scorpion stew when I offered it. No visage. He had dialogue refusing the offer. Not sure what I did wrong. This was before breaking Marikas rune.

does anybody know what happens if i dont speak with hornsent right before killing messmer? I double rest on the grace and he disappeared :(
Dodge his horned bairn spell at all costs, his melee attacks are mid but if all 5 horned bairns hit you, they'll oneshot!
- Anonymous
The info on this article is just plain wrong. I entered Messmer's bossfight multiple times and I still completed the invasion with Hornsent. I'm assuming the article meant you can't KILL Messmer. It's totally fine to enter his arena.
PSA: If you summoned him for Messmer, but rested at the grace twice without talking to him, he will simply disappear and not invade you in Rauh Ruins.
To get him to invade, you have to go back to Highroad Cross grace in Shadu Altus, where he will be standing and speak to him there.
Doing so will give you the same dialogue as Messmer's room, and prompt him to invade you in Rauh.
Someone kindly add this into the wiki, preferably in red text, so people don't miss out on his quest after burning the sealing tree.

this and shamans were responsible for a disgusting little characterization of a genocided people as if their civilian population was responsible for what their unquestionable, inquistion-led divinely appointed aristocracy did. This feeds into the same mentality of people who justify the hiroshima and nagazaki bombing, as if the children and wife of Hornsent deserved to be burnt at the stake for what the priests did to the shamans, and since the honrsent character we interact with is a bloodthirsty debased animal you cant reason with, "maybe Messmer was right" was the only conclusion people could take from it. Too many villains, not enough grey area for the honrsent, "they were never saints, they just happened to be on the losing side of the war"
- Anonymous
I don't think him wearing the Caterpillar Mask necessarily confirms he at one point was a potentate, nor that he flayed and stuffed shaman into jars. His armor set is very clearly haphazardly thrown together with an underlying theme of obsession and vengeance and little to no care of one's own appearance as indicated by the soiled loincloth. As the mask description states it is intended to "ward off thoughts of impurity, doubt, temptation, and other wickednesses one is vulnerable to while absorbed in divine ritual." I think this speaks more of his inner thoughts; He believes his vengeance is a divine ritual, or divine retribution and his actions are just. To ward off thoughts of doubt or temptation could also mean that he at one point felt doubt in his mission. After all, no matter how many of Marika's children or Erdtree faithful he slaughters his actions would never bring back his family. The mask allows him to focus on the task at hand even if the result would be fruitless. This further ties into the braided rope cord and arm wraps which " ties together the vow of the revenger with the victims' grudges". Since he is a hornsent he would know of his people's culture and customs. It is therefore as likely a theory he merely found the mask and chose to wear it knowing what it was used for as it is his previous profession being potentate. Both could also be true.

At first you probably think poor Hornsent is as consumed by obsession and vengeance as one can get, then you meet Igon.

After bringing this guy up in some conversations, god I wish they actually gave him a proper name instead of just calling him Hornsent, it can get really confusing from time to time. I began calling him Joe just to avoid this happening. Idk, he just kinda looks like some Joe that sells beef sandwiches in Chicago.
- Anonymous
I think it was a mistake for Fromsoft to make this guy so unpleasant, probably the intention was to show the marks of war and genocide, but in the end we got a character we couldn't empathize with and it prevented many players from sympathizing with the hornsent people.

I summoned him for my first fight against Messmer, let myself die after 10 seconds, then beat Messmer without summoning him but he's depressed now. Do you have to beat Messmer with Hornsent to progress his quest or is this just some weird bug? Really annoying quest design, either way...

It is not true that if you enter the Messmer room you are automatically locked out. I have attempted Messmer many times, and the signs are there for me. This may be because I didn't go through the dialogue before I did Messmer, but it is not an automatic lockout, it is situational.

Marika is still a horrible person, but I hate the hornsent more.
So queen marika for ever.

I think it would be better if he joined you against Leda if you assisted him and summoned him for Messmer. I guess the point is he’s so consumed by vengeance that he turned on any tarnished due to their connection to the erdtree.

worth mentioning that this guy was probably against the practices of the other potentates, considering an item description mentions that one of the potentates left bonny village due to massacres committed there

Hornsent can be found at the Highroad cross site of grace after Messmer not in the boss room. And then he can invade Rauh Base.

Engaging Mesmer moves Hornsent's summon sign to Mesmer's boss room, locking out the fight against Leda or with Leda against Hornsent in Shadowkeep. Engaging Mesmer also caused him to disappear from the specimen conservatory/library, which can lock you out of Redmane Freyja's questline in Shadowkeep. However, Fromsoft was better at things this time around and messing up as I've described will NOT lock you out of the Hornsent invasion in Rauh.

Makes no sense. If leda wants to kill him anyway and doesn't matter what we tell her then why he is then at worst NPC gank in last location? He shouldn't be there at all.
- Anonymous
So, does he need to be alive after the Messmer fight to be satisfied? That seems like an important detail.

Point is, everyone, including Hornsent and Marika, are horrible people. Messmer is a horrible person too. They all suck, no matter their reasons. Hornsents just have no reasons you can have empathy for (and who knows, maybe they do, and we'll see in the Shadow of the Scadutree DLC /s).
But like, Marika and Messmer aren't based. At all.
Gotta say, with all the Redditors hating this guy...he's starting to grow on me

If Fromsoft wanted for me to sympathize with hornsent they really did a sloppy work on that with this NPC. They rather managed the opposite in the end so I believe they never really wanted to. Hornsent Grandam is doing a miles better job in sympathizing department in comparison. And Messmer boss fight is too beautiful to stain the experience with summoning this dude, so screw his quest on my next playthrough as well.
tl;dr Mandatory vigor check for hornsent.

If he is such a d*** to his benefactors and allies, imagine him in the past.
Messmer's mistake was that of not doing a thorough job by impaling this guy along with his tribe.

I just made a depressing relization about this character. During his battle he wields the horned bairn, its item description reads: "most young born bearing the oversized horns meet a frightfully early demise. These fetishes are made to memorialize them." My guess is that Hornsents child died upon birth due to having oversized horns, and he carries the bairn in memorial of his child. This makes it even sadder regarding the fate of his wife, as she is hinted that she died to the flames of messmer. She most likely stayed alive and helped hornsent battle his grief, yet she was taken from him during messmers crusade. Say what you wan't about this character, that story is depressing and humanizes him into a character with values that many can relate with.
- Anonymous
why can't he place a summon sign outside of the arena like a normal person? i didn't know he was even there until like 10 attempts in when i ran over the sign and a lil hologram of him appeared, but even then i'm too busy getting skewered to kneel down and summon him anyways, you can't do it at the start of the fight either because of the divebomb attack

"This NPC moves to Highroad Cross - Site of Grace (next to Miquella's Cross and Needle Knight Leda) after defeating Rellana, Twin Moon Knight. [See Shadow of the Erdtree Map Link]"
This is not true. He moves to the Highroad Cross site of grace after you enter the Scadu Altus, not after defeating Rellana. You can avoid the Rellana fight by using the Spiritspring near the Elder's Hovel to jump into the Fort of Reprimand, which puts you in Scadu Altus.
I never stepped foot inside Rellana's dungeon (Castle Enis? Castle Inis? Whatever) and the moment I entered Scadu Altus, he moved to Highroad Cross. Leda also appeared there.

This dude is such a hater, no matter what you do he'll fight you sooner or later.
You either kill him by assisting Leda, assist him and then summon him for Messmer - after which he invades you in Rauh and you kill him, or if you assist him and either don't summon him/summon him and avoid his invasion, he'll be part of the fight in Enir-Ilim.

The voice lines from this guy in the big fight are so memorable. I loved the way he called me Lord of Marika and Lord of the Erdtree. He reminded me of my purpose of marrying Marika and becoming Elden Lord. His words emboldened me to do what must be done and put the foolish ambitions of Miquella to rest. Rest in peace.
Bro, he died during the Messmer fight with me and got replaced by uhh Jolan or someone with really black armor after another try.

For me Hornsent was not in the Three-Paths Grace when I got the stew from Grandam.
Simply look for him in his next location, in Scadu Altus. Unlike what this guide says, going through Ensis and defeating Rellana is not the trigger for him to move (or at least, probably not the only trigger)
I'm not sure what the exact trigger is, but I think that it was very likely the fact that I obtained the map fragment of Scadu Altus early. You can reach it through a long way around Castle Ensis (search "Ensis skip" to do so, it doesn't seem like it's in this website yet)

It pains me to say Leda was right. There isn't an npc that deserves death more than this one. Very not based of me

Honestly it's kind of unfair how much the community hates the guy. His mother, wife, and kids all died due to Messmer's crusade; if anyone deserves to be a rage-fuelled maniac it's him, and his story splits quite nicely between getting utterly consumed by vengeance and hatred (and dying unceremoniously as a result) or being denied his revenge and ultimately seeking redemption for his clan to the end.
But no. You **** your pants ONE TIME and all everyone remembers you as is the angry dirty diaper man from the tribe of *******s who did jar-related crimes against humanity.

You don't have to beat Rellana to get Hornsent and Leda to move to Highroad Cross. If you go southeast from Castle Ensis following the lowest path into the poison swamp with the Miranda flowers, you can find a couple spiritsprings to the right after the first large Miranda flower. Those take you up to the Fort of Reprimand where you can just sprint out and run towards Highroad Cross where they'll both be waiting for you

You can find him in Highroad Cross Site of Grace after killing Messmer. Exploring Rauh Ruins won't lock you out of his questline

You can speak to him in Highroad Cross Site of Grace if he doesn't appear in Messmer's boss room

How stupid is it to tie a questline to an NPC being summoned in a fight? I wanted to fight a boss solo so now I’m being punished by a harder gank fight? Thanks, Miyazaki, very cool.

I found that you have to reach Storehouse First Floor and go talk to Leda before the summon signs appear

Can't fint Hornsent/Leda signs in Shadow Keep.
Leda is still at the Highroad Cross site of Grace, telling me she's going after Hornsent (I chose not to answer her question regarding Tholier/Hornsent earlier).
Hornsent's summon sign is not at the Messmer fog gate either. I have activated the Messmer fight, watched the cutscene, but not tried to beat him yet.
Have I messed up the questline, or is there a way to reactivate it?

I assisted Hornsent against Leda, defeated Romina before Messmer, and summoned him in Messmer fight.
He didn’t invade me but he joined Leda instead.
Glad I still got his drops after the gank fight.

Replaying the DLC and missed him both times because of how stupid this quest is. Missed him the first time because I killed Romina before Messmer. And I thought I didnt have to summon the second time so now I just wasted a whole playthrough!
Hornsent. Beware the Hornsent. If he could, he would burn the world
So if I summon him for the souls' community I'm a noob, but I need to summon him to complete the quest, how are we going to deal with this?
