Shrieks, building up madness in nearby foes
![]() |
Howl of Shabriri is an Incantation in Elden Ring. The Howl of Shabriri spell creates madness buildup in nearby foes. Updated to Patch 1.07.
Incantation originating from the maddening Three Fingers.
Releases a maddening shriek that causes madness buildup in foes nearby.
This incantation also causes madness buildup in the caster and makes enemies more likely to target them.
It is said that the sickness of the flame of frenzy began with Shabriri, the most reviled man in all history.
Howl of Shabriri Location in Elden Ring
The Howl of Shabriri spell can be found in the following location:
- Found in a chest on the second level of the Frenzy-Flaming Tower. [Elden Ring Map Link]
- From the Grand Lift of Dectus grace site, move South through a mountain path and follow the path. You will come upon a small incline going towards a tall stone tower, use the nearby rocks as cover from the flaming orb above the tower as you make your way towards it. Take a left to climb onto a set of rocks, to your left will be the tower with some small rats and a large rat at the base. Climb 2 ladders and turn around to see a chest containing the Howl of Shabriri incantation.
Elden Ring Howl of Shabriri Guide
- Frenzied Flame Incantation
- Stamina Cost: 38
- Deals standard physical damage
- Causes severe Madness buildup (35 per tick) in enemies in an area of effect around the caster, as well as slight (6 per tick) madness buildup in the caster.
- The amount of Madness dealt does not appear to change with incant scaling or the seal used.
- Note that all but a handful of enemies in PVE are immune to Madness.
- Deals slight damage, but not enough for the spell to be useful offensively against enemies immune to Madness.
- However, this damage can be useful to prevent low-poise enemies from attacking.
- When cast, the caster receives simultaneous buffs and debuffs:
- Damage +25%
- Damage Taken +30%
- Enemies are more likely to attack the caster
- Duration: 40 secs. Increased to 52 secs. with Old Lord's Talisman
- This is a Body Buff and will not stack with other buffs of the same type.
- See Buffs and Debuffs for more information on stacking buffs.
- Note: This Spell was changed with Patch 1.07 as follows: Effect duration has been extended from 20 to 40 seconds.
- As of Patch 1.09, Roar Medallion increases the damage of the howl area of effect about approx. 2% in Player vs. Player. No change in the increase of the damage buff from this incantation.

POV: shampoo is all over your eyelids and your stupid brain decided to blink

It does grant some minor poise during the cast. I did not notice poise damage against enemies, I tested with a basic noble hollow and he still didn't stagger depite being hit by the aoe.
- Anonymous
shabriri howl damage increased by +2% with roar medallion.
Wow, such demolish. Much destruction.

"BUG: Does NOT increase damage of Sorceries and Incantations as of Patch 1.09" needs to be added to this, like it is on the pages for the other buffs

this and Golden Vow were made for each other. If you have the faith for this, you have the faith for Golden Vow, and it further boosts your damage while also offsetting some of the damage debuff of Howl. Golden Vow lasts fully twice as long (80s vs 40s) so watch out for when Howl expires first so you can reapply it, then reapply both the next time. Gonna start an Arbalest-only challenge run that rushes 33 Faith for these incants.

Her reaction after my friend told me the worst she can say is No
This is also bugged currently and doesn't add damage when using spells like golden vow after newest patch. What's going on?
- Anonymous
its basically suicide in ng+7 unless you dont get hit at all
- Anonymous
Absolutely stupid that it never tells you that you get a damage buff and debuff. Thought it was a useless spell until I saw some streamer use it and I didn't understand why. Fromsoft is so dumb.

“The amount of Madness dealt does not appear to change with incant scaling or the seal used.”
So the amount of arcane and dragon communion seal doesn’t increase buildup? The buildup remains same no matter the seals and amount of arcane are?
- Anonymous
Very good to use against people trying to climb ladders, especially if you’re waiting at the top of a long one. The repeated hits knock them right off.

Does madness not scale with arcane? I could've sworn it did; casting from the dragon communion seal seemed to massively increase *my* madness buildup compared to when I'd used Howl of Shabriri in another build with faith, casting from the Gravel Stone Seal. I did not properly test, unfortunately; perhaps this quicker buildup was caused by other factors. It's quite possible that I'd had higher focus before without realizing it.

This spell is literally the embodiment of every Elden Ring player. Do way more damage and take way more damage.
- Anonymous
this should be an aura buff instead of a body buff so it doesn't completely invalidate bloodboil aromatic
- Anonymous
Does the howl increase the damage of other frenzy incantations?
- Anonymous
Now that the buff lasts 40 seconds it's actually useable for that purpose and Howl is now comparable to FGMS. The stat requirement and armor debuff means you won't see it as much as FGMS but that's ok. Cool spell.
- Anonymous
This is a oneshot build enabled, im surprised I dont see it more. It turns catch flame into a pocket nuke, turns giantsflame take thee into an ACTUAL nuke, and turns flame sure into a napalm surge.
- Anonymous
does this stack with GV + Flame grant me strength? asking for a friend
- Anonymous
I love how the ingame description doesn't even mention the spell makes you deal more damage and take more lmao
- Anonymous
I don't think you take more damage, I think your absorption is lowered like with the soreseals. That also being said the 30% is wrong its only 20% lower absorption.
- Anonymous
turned my death sorcerer into an absolute beast. pop this, pop terra magicka, and spam spooky boys til everything dies.
- Anonymous
This incantation has worked wonders for my Supreme Caster INT/FAITH build. If you’re using both Sorceries and Incantations, you’ll be dealing a very ample range of elemental damage, and this incantations buffs every single type of damage by 25%.
It doesn’t matter if it’s magic, fire, lightning, holy or physical: this spell buffs it.
Plus, it stacks with Golden Vow, which helps to further boost my spell damage while compensating for the defense shred debuff.
Also, animation and sound effects are badass.
10/10 would tear my throat with screams of primal insanity again

Done a good plethora of duels with this incant. Definitely requires a dedicated madness build to function, but its a fantastic aggression read against players with existing buildup, and can even finish people off with its persistent aoe tick damage. Poor use will absolutely get you killed though, wouldn't mind some buffs to the startup or recovery, maybe even being able to toll out after the first full scream. I've eaten too damn many jump attack one shots after whiffing this.
- Anonymous
Maybe thematically my fav spell, such an odd amalgam of effects and flavor. Now actually viable as a buff in pve with the extended duration. Procs madness like nobodys business too if invaders panic roll into it. Ultimately the startup and range limit it from being too strong (as well as 33 faith yikers), but definetly not worthless.
- Anonymous
good for a berserker build. currently using this with hard of alexander and wild strikes to pump out some crazy damage
- Anonymous
I’m the same person who wrote the comment below. Another thing, you could do all of that and wear the black dumpling then inflict madness proc on yourself. To get a 50 percent damage increase
- Anonymous
Yeah don’t listen to the comment below. Boiled prawn or boiled crab is a body buff just like Howl of shabriri and would just overwrite it. This is best paired with Golden vow. It gives you a whopping 40 percent damage increase, and takes 10 percent of the damage debuff off. Or you could use golden vow and equip the dragoncrest shield talisman and get rid of the debuff altogether
- Anonymous
If you are worried about the debuff, after using this you can simply apply a body buff and turn it off when you want to. Prawns are a good choice for this if you don't have anything else.
- Anonymous
This is the most based co op incarnation. Not only is it one of the biggest buffs but it also increases your aggro and takes it off of the host. Just gotta be good or you die easily lol

This spell got a buff from 20 seconds to 40 seconds in 1.07.
- Anonymous
With the new patch 1.07 the duration of the buff / debuff lasts 40 seconds!
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Stoked that they finally buffed the duration of this thing. From 20 sec to 35 sec so it's actually practical to use now.
- Anonymous
Wish this spell was more buff-focused. Give it the same or similar cost/duration as Golden Vow, change it to an aura buff so the two don't stack, and as a bonus, give a smaller damage buff with no downsides to allies in range who have accepted the frenzied flame, similar to the frenzyflame stone. Maybe +15% like GV, without the damage negation. Not a fan of Howl's niche PvP status right now.
This would be good in PvP if it didn't absolutely shred your defenses. Basically a guaranteed madness proc if you catch someone in it but it doesn't seem to get any hyperarmor and the recovery animation from casting it is so long you can't effectively capitalize on getting them mad. The best way I've found to use it is cast it from afar to get the damage buff and then nuke them with Giantsflame.
- Anonymous
It doesn't need a lower faith requirement. We don't need another Flame Grant Me Strength that everyone and their dog can throw onto their build no matter what their playstyle is. It's allowed to be an oddity and faith builds are allowed to have buffs that you actually need to be a somewhat committed faith build to cast.
- Anonymous
the increased damage taken is not worth it especially on ng plus 3 and above. rallyingstandard and goldenvow is much more safer.
- Anonymous
Old Lord's Talisman impacts the duration of the buff
I timed it with and without (from the end of the howl, when you can move):
Without: ~18s
With talisman: ~22s
IMO very worth it to use the talisman if you're going to try to run a PvP glass cannon build with this.
- Anonymous
I feel like this would be a better spell if either A: it has a smaller faith requirement, or B: Lasts longer. If given the Black Dumpling and proc Madness on yourself with this spell, you’d get one of the strongest boosts in attack power in the entire game, but to counteract this you also get a penalty to your defense, and also having to deal with the stun time and lost FP from proccing Madness on yourself. Those two things balances the pros and cons nicely.
But the cons outweigh the pros. It’s high faith requirement is a bit high for a buff paired debuff of equal value, like put it down to 20 faith, so more people can use it and complain about how they die so often with it.
And the duration is just abysmal! 20 seconds! Even Flame, Grant Me Strength, who’s only downside is its low duration, lasts 10 seconds longer than this! This is comparable durations to War Cry, Barbaric Roar and Braggart Roar, but unlike HoS, it is applied instantaneous, can be used by anyone that means the weapon requirement, and you don’t even get a defense penalty! And making it last longer wouldn’t be that making it OP, because you’d also be keeping the defense debuff for just as long if it was ever extended.
Sure it can do damage and builds up Madness to nearby enemies, but that isn’t the point of the spell, it is the buff you get from it.
So in my opinion From should either lower its Requirement to something like 20 Faith, or extend the duration to 45-60 seconds. And if you think that is too long, just remember the Boilblood Aromatic lasts 60 seconds and is exactly like HoS with attack buff and defense debuff.
Anyway thank you for listening to my TED Talk.

Pretty sure the dmg number is wrong, as it gives 20% increase damage and not 25%, at least in the tests I've done.

Does anyone know if increasing the potency of this incantations ha any effect on how much madness buildup on yourself you get?
It's so strange that this is meant to be a body buff, but makes absolutely no mention of any buff, damage increase, or stat effects in the description or anywhere! While doing my first blind playthrough with my FTH caster I literally just thought this was a super weak AOE damage spell for madness based characters to use!
I know FROM can be pretty vague about game mechanics sometimes, but I've never seen them not even HINT at what a weapon or spell's primary usage is supposed to be... Which leads me to think it was surely accidental oversight or missing part of the item description.

BUFF TYPES THAT STACK
AURA (golden vow/rallying standard) BODY (consumable buffs/howl of shabriri/black flame protection/flame Grant me strength) PHYSICK, WEAPON (grease/scholar armament/royal knight resolve) TALISMANS, ARMOR, SPECIAL(jellyfish shield)
- Anonymous
One thing I'm not seeing mentioned is how handy this can be when co-oping if you want to draw aggro. It gives you the same effect as Shabriri's Woe, and enemies will target you over other players. I've used it a lot when co-oping with my buddy who plays a sorcerer so he doesn't pull aggro as soon as he casts two spells.
- Anonymous
Hmmm. This buff increases my damage from 561 to 701, worth.
- Anonymous
Something interesting to note, Ive been doing quite a few tests and I have found that the Madness build up is tied to your Framerate.
All the Frenzy incantations seem to adhere to this, but this one is the most prominent.
At 452 focus wearing the Clarifying Horn Charm +1, Nomadic Merchant's Finery (Altered), Preceptors Gloves, Page Boots, and Commoners headband (Altered) and testing at the Castle Sol Rooftop site of grace.
If I move slightly towards and look exactly North East from the site of Grace, facing a corner of the arena with walls, the madness gauge leaves alot of space left until it procs.
If I look in exactly the opposite direction, towards where the rest of the castle is down below having it rendered, the Madness gauge fills all the way and procs madness on me. I can reliably get this to repeat in other areas of the game where I have frame rate differences and the results are pretty consistent.

I like this spell a lot, but it's duration is what hurts it the most in comparison to other buff spells. The 20 second duration, plus having to play around it's absorption shred, makes it hard to justify over other options if you're fighting at close range. But when you aren't, though, it's great; I think it's probably one of the best options for faith casters. But even if you prefer melee, it's still a reliable buff in any situation where you need to punish something from a distance. Additionally, if you have the black dumpling, you could probably cast it with low enough focus and proc madness for even more damage.
- Anonymous
Tested it on a +5 Dragon Communion Seal and the buff lasts around 20 seconds. This was with 33 FTH & 22 ARC, not sure about the Talisman that buffs the spell duration however since I lack it on a fresh character.
- Anonymous
The amount of madness this spell applies is only effected IF you cast it with a Seal that scales with Arcane (dragon seal) and your Arcane stat. Be warned though, it also increases the amount applied to YOU as well as the enemy.
- Anonymous
Shabriri must have been a real piece of work to be the most hated man in all of history, even more so than Rykard or even the man only known as a literal DUNG EATER.
- Anonymous
Self madness increase is 100% dependent on seal not sure why the wiki disagrees. Using my +10 dragon seal will always cause full madness buildup and stun me whereas if I use gravel stone seal or golden order or frenzied flame seal I never get stunned and the madness amount changes with each seal. Irritating cuz dragon communion is my main seal and I wanna use the buff on this but I just swap to another seal to cast it.
- Anonymous
Buffed my AR but debuffed dmg negation (think it was in magic & lightning?)

Increase to stats? That's not a damage boost; that's called a stat boost.

Increase to stats? That's not a damage boost; that's called a stat boost.

Would be really nice if the spell description bothered to mention the buff and debuff. It's much easier to decide what spells to use if you actually know what they do, after all.
- Anonymous
If you use other madness spells against players in PVP, then you can trick them into getting close enough for this to hit. After they see you have this, they'll be a LOT more reluctant to punish your frenzy spells.
- Anonymous
"increase to Physical Damage (Strength and Dexterity increase); increase to magic damage (Intelligence and Faith increase)"
Does anyone know how many temporary attributes points this buff gives to ya?
- Anonymous
The damage buff stacks with "Golden Vow"
It sadly doesn't stack with "Flame, Grant Me Strength"
- Anonymous
I've used this in Pvp, if you land it, they get madness procced, however your sitting in the animation the entire duration of their madness so you get no followup attack, seems kinda uselss in my experience, I could be using it wrong
- Anonymous
For the record, I’m working a Carcosian of Hastur build, and this incant works best on NPCs/players who come near you AFTER you’ve done the scream. You’ll be finishing up your animation while they, if they got hit, will be stuck in the madness afflict animation, allowing for more prep. It also does insane damage vs Tarnished compared to enemies, I almost one shot a duelist with +10 frenzy flame seal at around 40/40 lvl 120ish.
- Anonymous
At +4 with the Black Flame Seal it always procs madness w/ one click. I’m level 60. Maybe is just not viable for me at this level.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
This spell currently makes the madness afflicted to you also scale off of the upgrade of the seal you use. With a basic finger seal without any upgrades it afflicts me with around 60% of madness. With my +10 dragon communion seal I get afflicted before the Howl is even 30% done with the animation. Practically gives me full madness 2 times over.
- Anonymous
Increases damage by 22%, but also makes you take 22% more damage.
- Anonymous
I can't say i noticed the ~22% damage buff others have reported, infact, weapons do 2 points of damage less in my case for some reason, maybe a bug?
Not super helpful in PvP besides the damage buff, the range on the scream is pretty terrible
- Anonymous
From what it looks like, I don't think this stacks with flame grant me strength
In addition to the buff, it seems to give some sort of debuff. The symbol is identical to Shabriri's Woe but the background of the symbol is a diamond instead of a square.
- Anonymous
Besides the obscure effects on the user, this spell has another strange quirk to it. The self inflicted madness buildup almost seems to be random; sometimes you'll proc it in one cast, and sometimes you'll only fill up around half the bar. Anyone have any ideas as to what factors might contribute?
- Anonymous
Can confirm, This thing has a 22% damage buff for about 20 seconds. If you wanna run a one-shot build, this is a must!
- Anonymous
You find this in the Frienzied tower close to the Frienzied Village. Its the tower with the big burning yellow flame eye ball that inflicts maddness as you approach it. Kill the enemies in the tower and you will find this spell
- Anonymous
It's not listed anywhere in the spell's description, but Howl seems to also grant a ~22% damage boost to all types of damage for the duration of the "taunt" effect. It's still not great, but at least it's not an active detriment.
- Anonymous
Shouldn’t be used in PvE, regular enemies don’t seem to be affected by madness. Might be good in PvP though
- Anonymous
Found it in a fort with a smoldering Yellow Flame in the air above it (looks like the Eye of Sauron and causes madness), in a chest on the second level. Its north of Frenzied Flame Village, about 100 or less meters.
- Anonymous
Found it! It is in the frenzy flaming tower in a chest you can hold it down to keep shreiking and also inflicts madness on you though so watch out
- Anonymous
Can be found on top of the Frenzy-Flaming Tower, a short distance north of the minor Erdtree northwest of Raya Lucaria
Not sure if it's the madness or this spell - but you get an huge dmg buff at the cost of your defense when using it.
- Anonymous
This **** is ass; garbage damage, enemies don't stagger, and you don't get any sort of poise channeling it like the ******* invader who uses it against you. Waste of runes.
This spell pairs well with the black dumpling if you going for low to no focus, best to use flame of frenzy then howl of shabriri to finish the proc off if you wanna be somewhat fp efficient. But for some reason the madness build up can be inconsistent when trying to proc fro Mathis spell alone. Like most times I can proc in one or two casts, I have like 18 focus rn. But other times it takes 3 casts, trying to proc in a middle of a fight is already tedious enough but having to do 3 casts is annoying. Anyone explain why it’s like this? I feel like this happens more often in co op, so is my focus being scaled up to the host? That would be annoying asf if that’s the case.
